AmbersSecretAdmirer: I have to disagree on Joss being innovative with the vampire genre. When the show was watcheable, I thought it was a decent combo of comedy and horror but not innovative. IMHO, Joss did nothing new with the Vampire mythos: cross check, sun check, garlic check, no reflection check, yaaaaawwwwnnnn check. The Vamp face morphing thing was done first (before BTVS anyhoo) in "Fright Night" which came out before the first Buffy movie and I believe was a big influence (if not the similarities are uncanny). The addition of teen angst to the horror mythos was already pioneered in "Fright Night", "Lost Boys" and "Near Dark" IMHO.
"Forever Knight" made me believe the Vampires were charcters from another era. On Buffy, the vampires never seemed like anything but modern teens to me even when they were more than a hundred years old. I like the medieval flashbacks in "Forever Knight" and the historical back story. It reminded me a bit of "Highlander" in that regard. Not a great series but it had some nice stuff and never descended into utter crap.
The best modern Vamp tale IMHO is "Ultraviolet". They did some innovative things with vampires. My fav was that the no reflection thing made them not appear on video so that was another way to find vamps. Modern and cool.
