Another deal, another high for 'Queer Eye'

SUMMARY: The hit series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" is extending its influence to Australia as it continues to breaking U.S. television ratings records.

The hit series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" is beginning to expand its influence to other countries, as its parent network closed a deal on Monday to produce a version of the show in Australia.

And, in what's beginning to sound like a broken record in recent months, the show broke another ratings record for the cable network Bravo, which airs the male makeover program each week.

The show, in which five gay stylists transform a drab straight man, has been so successful that NBC, Bravo's owner, aired reruns of the show this summer; and Random House paid a $1 million advance for a book featuring tips from the show's Fab Five.

NBC finalized what it calls its "biggest deal yet" on Monday with Australia's Network Ten, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The deal allows NBC to produce an Australian version of the show, and the network gets to sell both versions internationally.

The trade newspaper also noted that the Bravo version has already been sold to Britain, Iceland, Finland and New Zealand. Negotiations are underway in France and Germany.

"But I don't hesitate to say that the biggest deal to date is Australia," Leslie Jones, director of international sales for NBC Enterprises, told the Reporter.

Australia's Network Ten will air the American version of the show, while producers prepare the local version.

Meanwhile, last week's episode of "Queer Eye" drew 3.35 million viewers, squashing the show's previous record of 2.9 million. The high rating also trumped every other show in its Tuesday time slot except an NBC repeat of "Law & Order."

The season finale of Bravo's gay dating show "Boy Meets Boy," which aired just before "Queer Eye" on Sept. 2, also received its best ratings with 1.62 million viewers, according to Reuters. The two gay-themed programs are now the cable channel's highest-rated shows ever.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I have been watching the above show for a few weeks now. But I had no idea how much of a hit it was. I have to say I am extremely proud of these men. Each of them are have varied and sophicated personalities. If you haven't watched the show one of the many things I appreciate is that the men the 'Fab Five' help are so open to the experience. Often on the show the hosts are flirtaous and affectionate. One one show I saw, a big muscluar fellow was laying on the bed and the hosts were laying around him... amd it was no big deal. The hosts sometimes hold hands, or hug or give/get kisses on the cheek and it's no big deal. It's all treated as wonderfully normal.

And it's kicking ass in the ratings.

Which I hope sends TPTB in film/tv land a message.

I absolutely love this show. Using the tips I got from a couple of episodes I completely revamped my look from the lazy, dorky slob to my new charming self. And I wasn't even on the show. The Fab Five are miracle-workers.

Choosing not to decide is still a choice.

I love the show mainly because you can see how much fun everyone is having. You don't even care if they're gay. When people are enjoying themselves it rubs off. And of course Jai is absolutly adorable.

When I first heard about the show I was very leary about it, but it's amazing. And I couldn't be more happy about 5 gay men being completely accepted into millions of people's homes every week.

I had to laugh when my very straight, conservative Republican boss was talking at lunch the other day about this program. She said it’s her favorite TV show and she never misses it. I must admit that I was quite surprised to hear her say that. Who knew that television could actually be a vehicle to help open people’s minds? :pride

I love carson. He's a stereotype sure, but I think he's also an individual and inspite of that whole schtick he does, he's a very caring guy. I think that goes for all of them. I enjoy the show, I hope they have a very special episode where they help a poor lesbian :p

they should definitely do a show with a lesbian, that would probably be hilarious. though i also think my brother would make a good straight guy to make over. he's so stereotypical college party boy, it scares me. i was so not the stereotypical college girl (we didn't have too many of those at vassar - we even had a joke frat party our senior year and dressed as stereotypical sorority girls and frat guys) so it's so strange that my brother is. he's damn cool though, and he'd make a good subject. they haven't had any college kids yet.

by the way, i love this show. it's my new favorite show. i only missed one episode and that's when i was at home where my mom doesn't get bravo. carson has the best one-liners "If at anytime you want to make out with me, just let me know," but i think thom is my favorite. he's so brutal. jai is definitely adorable. i really love how good-natured the straight guys who get made over are. there was the one cop guy who got a little weird at the tanning salon, but other than that, they've totally rocked.

Oh goody, a Queer Eye thread!

I already mentioned this on the TV thread, but my favorite Fab Fiver is Ted: he's a sweetie (and so suave). My favorite Carsonism: (to the straight guy, when pulling shirts off a store rack) "I thought of you, and I pulled these. Of course, that's not the only thing I pulled when I thought of you!" :lol

I freely admit to taking notes from the F5: my butch self needs all the help I can get! I know some folk have expressed the fear that they are getting over-exposed, but I don't see it yet. I just that anything that shows LGBT people in any kind of "normalizing" light ("See, they're just like us---only funnier") is of the good.

GG When are new eps coming out? Out

I think that anyone who accuses Queer Eye of perpetuating stereotypes is nuts. I mean, sure Carson is a walking, talking one, but it's hardly the point of the show.

I would SO go on the show... but I live on the west coast...

It would be pretty funny to have a lesbian on the show.

And I as well have taken a few tips; recently it was remove the cell phone from the belt, as it is not an accessory. See, I can still be taught. hee hee :rollin

Not that I know of. I know originally there was a different Culture guy, but it wasn't working out, so they canned him (he was the black dude). But he is in a few of the earlier episodes. On a related note, he's now suing the producers for letting him go.

Ok good, I worried for a sec. I knew the first guy was let go. But let's face it, jai is so much better. Culture guy doesn't have much to do and Jai makes the most of it.

Jai is cute but yogurt has more culture. His tips are straight from Norman Vincent Peale. After watching this show all the other home improvement shows seem so boring now.

I about fell off the chair this week when Carson was holding out the penny to this week's hapless straight man. Actually the last few guys have been pretty boring , surely in the NY area they can find more interesting subjects.

I was scared too when I heard that. I don't get cable, so everything I know comes from hearsay or the few episodes I can see at friends' houses.

Ah, uh, at the risk of sounding totally clueless, who is Norman Vincent Peale?

Yes, Jai is totally cute. Even I love Jai.

I thought Jai's name was pronounced "Jiy" (rhymes with eye) but it's basically a variation of Jay. Weird.

Carson, I think, is supposed to be the "star" of the show. He reminds me of someone I used to hang with, years ago. Cracks me up. I'm just glad I got married before this show got on the air; I think several of my gay friends would have submitted me for this. :spin

O i saw that last saturday. They turned him *gasp* back to black! it's the only way. SNL had a QE gag too. But it was "queer eye for the straight gal." The fab five consisted of 5 really butch, mullet headed women or super feminist. It was funny cuz it was so extreme.
