Tarzan - it has Lucy Lawless *sigh*

Postby BytrSuite » Sun Oct 05, 2003 9:56 pm

Okay, this premiered tonight. I watched it even though I don't think Lucy shows up til next week or maybe the week after. She plays Tarzan's aunt, Kathleen, eventually. They keep showing preveiws with her in them.

It wasn't as bad as it could have been. I think it's interesting that they made Jane a cop. I'll probably be checking it out next week too. Sigh.

Damn Lucy Lawless for making me pay attention to this at all. Heh.

Yep, I too will be watching this because Lucy will be on it.

This wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and the actress playing Jane is also very easy on the eyes :eyebrow

Can't wait to see Lucy, and really can't wait to see scenes between Lucy's character and Jane :grin

Just saw this tonight (my WB is always a day behind): I'm w/ others here on how this wasn't as bad as forecast. In fact, it could be pretty damn good (as in "Hot damn, Lucy Lawless!" :drool ) . . . as long as Pretty-Boy doesn't open his mouth too often. :p

GG Actually, I'm enough of a perv ("Yeah, GG, we get that already!" ) to be looking forward to incest-vibes, when Tarzan meets his "aunt"! :lol Out

The boyfriend: what shows has he been on? He looks so familiar it's driving me crazy. :confused

i agree GG the boyfriend did seem familar.....not sure from what tho.:confused

I want it. Give it to me. I love it. 7-Year Bitch

I saw the new episode tonight (it's good to be in Canada ;) ) and Lucy was in it (three scenes) :grin

And Lucy is in the credits :clap

Since I'm probably the only one who saw it tonight, I won't talk about it, but I will say that Lucy looked great :heart and that I really liked the end :sh

That is what the spoiler code is for asshole, you are just too lazy to type it up. :miff

I am told that this Tarzan, like any other I've seen, is clean shaven. I always wondered how that could be that Tarzan does not have any facial hair. Must be some genetic mutation, I guess the trees in Tarzan's jungle grow razor blades instead of fruit.

Tim, maybe I missed something: what did you like about the end?

Well, I guess I'll never know who the psycho boyfriend was (where I've seen him) as he kicked it in tonight's ep (kinda saw that coming because he wasn't in the credits).

How old is Jungle Boy supposed to be? He's over 18, isn't he? Cuz I just don't get the "whoever has him, has controlling interest in Greystoke Industries" angle (if he's not a minor). Where exactly is the drama going to come in this show (beyond Jane's partner trying to figure everything out---inc. why Jane is acting "different")? The tug-of-war between the Claytons can only go on so long, and is there any doubt that Jane will surrender to the 'Zan-man's abs, um, I mean charms? :lol

Lucy looked great (surprise!), but I really hope they'll give her more to say (and do? I know she probably won't kick ass, but I can dream, can't?). Love how when she does say stuff, those little Kiwi-isms (accent) are still intact! (Can't remember exactly what they were tonight, beyond her tendency to pronounce words like "been" as "bean" and "get" as "git" :p ).

Well, "it ain't Sophocles," as Xena would say, but I'll be back for another week. :hmm

GG My favorite example of a Lucy "Kiwi-eruption" in XWP is the classic "Git to the rivah!" from The Price :D Out

ETA: Aaaaaaaaargh! Sorry Brian. You know, I recently correctly remembered your names/handles, so it only makes sense that I'd screw it up when I tried again.

I really need a mnemonic device. Let's see: WarDuke-Brian. WDB . . . WDB . . . WDB . . . Got it! WonDerBra! :lol

It's Brian, Tim's WebWarlock. The reason I liked it so much is that I didn't like Jane's bf, so since he died at the end, that's why I liked it so much.

Actually, at this point I like everyone BUT Tarzan. I think he’s the weakest link thus far. The character and actor. I really like everyone else from the cops to the family of Tarzan. And, I admit it if Lucy is more involved in it I’d watch it no matter what. I like the play between her and Mitch P. Hm, but I agree, I’m worried about just how far the stories can go here. We’ll see.

me too on the "wasnt as bad as expected". i'll probly watch it cuz o lucy. and cuz it didnt suck as much as i thought.

it kinda gives me a "this'll do OK" feeling, even if i'm not so hot to trot on it. you know? which is nice, cuz i cant help but feel like it's more promising for lucy's new show from the wb, if the show they put her on now, sorta to bide her time, does well. anybody dig what i mean?

i'm probably being terribly vague and confusing again. ive been having trouble forming sentences today. forgive me.

anyway, anyone else think that evilboyfriend looked really freaky, with a brainwashed kinda look on his face when he was talking to uncle scaryguy? i'm not suggesting they intended it to come off that way, more so commenting on that boyfriend dude's less than charming acting skills. way too intense for his own good.

btw, that dead boyfriend was on guiding light a while back, and he was in tears of the sun, maybe thats why he's familiar.

edited to add: he was also on an ep of CSI, and an ep of Friends, and apparently on Angel once as well, so the imdb tells me....

Not that much to mention, the interview was really short, but the interviewer did mention the possibility of her own show, and she said she'd like to do a comedy (all the hot babes want to do comedy it seems ;) )

When asked about Travis, she said that she calls him monkey boy :rollin

Damn, Lucy is in Tarzan?? i only watched the premiere of the show to see what they had done with the story line. as many of you guys say, it wasnt as bad as i expected. but i prefer drooling over Jennifer Garner in Alias, which is at the same time as Tarzan here.

The guy in Tarzan isnt that bad or so i thought when i first saw him, decent body and all but then he smiled. ok...he looked so idiotic. i'll pass thank you. smile is important people! i can easily give examples of 2 awesome ladies and their heart melting smiles *sigh*:wink

but now Lucy Lawless is in?!!! Damn..i wish it was at another hour so i could watch it.

And as one of our dear moderators pointed out; in the jungle he was in, the trees must have razors growing out of them or something. lol

From Zap2it:

Quote:
Lucy Lawless Enjoys Being a Girl on 'Tarzan'

By Kate O'Hare

After many seasons of tromping across New Zealand, strapped into a leather bustier and wielding all manner of sharp-edged weapons as "Xena: Warrior Princess," Lucy Lawless loves her new role in The WB's "Tarzan," airing Sundays.

The updated version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' pulp classic stars Travis Fimmel as John Clayton, aka Tarzan, and Sarah Wayne Callies as NYPD Detective Jane Porter. While they must film on location all over Toronto - night and day, rain or shine - Lawless keeps warm and dry as pampered princess Kathleen Clayton.

Lawless says, "Sarah's out under the rain machine, doing her scene in the middle of the night, and I'm sitting in the limo, waiting for her to come and chat with me. I cannot believe my luck, right?

"Usually, it's been me being crucified under rain machines and winter. So I'm so delighted. I cannot believe my luck, and they're making me look really pretty."

Introduced in the show's second episode, Kathleen is Tarzan's aunt, a powerful publisher and bitter rival fighting her brother, Richard Clayton (Mitch Pileggi), for control of New York-based family business Greystoke Industries.

It appears that young John, who had been lost in a plane crash with his family in Africa at age 5, now stands to inherit one-third of the company's stock, giving whoever wins his trust a controlling interest.

Kathleen offers Tarzan a home in her Fifth Avenue mansion, which is equipped with an overgrown indoor garden (all the better for Tarzan to be able to run around half-clad in the depths of winter).

"She is what they needed -- a home base for him," Lawless says. "And he needed a friend, because nobody else is his friend. She's also the audience's voice. She can ask the questions and elicit information from him, because he's not a big talker.

"Tarzan has to remain a mysterious stranger. He needs a friend and somebody to draw it out of him in the same way that Gabrielle [played by Renee O'Connor] did for Xena. I just get to prance around looking good and having a great time."

New Zealander Lawless has nothing but praise for Fimmel, who's from Australia, that other Land Down Under, and says there is no Kiwi-Aussie tension on set.

"No, that stuff's really stupid. I've never been a sports lover, so I've never understood that silly rivalry. It's a very juvenile trait in all of us, and our countries are slowly growing out of that. Apart from that, he's a darling. He's great.

"Travis is very smart and funny and committed. He wants to be a great actor, and I feel he's right on course, because he pays attention. He's got a really strong work ethic, which is very important to me. I don't appreciate lazy people, and he's just phenomenal in that regard."

Lawless also appreciates Pileggi, for entirely different reasons.

"Here's me and Mitch Pileggi having a raucous great time on set, because he's only the funniest human being you've ever met in your life. He's so cool. I love him. He's very naughty."

This underlying affection makes it easier for Lawless to find the soft heart at the core of Richard and Kathleen's fierce sibling rivalry.

"There is a love relationship there. You've always got to keep looking for the love, what brings these people back together, what's at stake.

"If there's nothing to lose with them fighting, if they just have an all-out battle, there would be no tension there. It would let all the pressure out, and of course, you've got to keep the pressure-cooker lid down nice and tight. It compels the audience to react."

The role also allowed Lawless to return to her natural ash-blond hair color after years of dark hair dye for "Xena," and lets her to explore her more fashionable side.

"Kathleen wears classic clothing, so we're trying to give it a twist. She considers status symbols are for losers and wannabes. She's the sort of woman who'll buy a piece from Galliano or Manolo Blahnik if she likes it, and it's practical to her needs. But, for the most part, she likes to discover her own contemporary artists and her own designers. She catches them before they get big.

"She follows the beat of her own drum. I guess you try to make characters the epitome of everything you'd like to be, sort of a far more fabulous version of yourself."

Currently inked for the bulk of the initial 13-episode order of "Tarzan" (with an option for more if the series takes off), Lawless also has a development deal with The WB.

"One wasn't dependent upon the other," she says. "The WB was incredibly candid about that. Even if I had said no to 'Tarzan,' they would still have me. I just felt they were far more honest than I had come to expect out of Hollywood people."

Although "Xena" fans might be thrilled if Lawless were to pick up a sword again, don't expect to see her starring in another action drama. Her commitments to husband Rob Tapert, a former "Xena" producer, their two young sons and Lawless' teen daughter from a prior marriage must take precedence.

"That's just not a lifestyle I can have anymore," Lawless says. "I've got three kids, and I would never see them. I brought them into this world, and I feel I should be there for them.

"It's every working mother's dilemma. I've talked about it to mothers on the crew, and we've all got a heartache about not being there. Yet, the reality is, we've all got to set up for our old age and our kids' education now, while the sun is shining.

"But here, I can come and go. I can still be Mom and then have this outlet of a few days a week at work. I feel I'm a much better mother that way. If I'm home all the time, I just get suburban neurosis."

CYBERSPATIAL ANOMALIES: Launched before the series, "Tarzan: The Series," at www.tarzantheseries.com/ offers an episode guide and schedule, news, multimedia and interviews with members of the cast and crew.

Maybe not. Lucy's momma didn't raise no dummy. I read an article about her on the TV Guide. She didn't want to do Tarzan but only agreed to do it, if the WB would develop a show for her next season. So I think there are good chances we'll see her again soon.

When John (why is this show even called Tarzan?) went to see his uncle, when he was yelling at him, you could hear Travis' Aussie accent, that made me laugh :lol

I heard it too, Warduke--I guess that's why they try to keep his dialogue down to a minimum:lol

It's amazing to me, on the other hand, how Lucy Lawless can produce a perfect American accent without any difficulty! On "Xena", she even managed to do "variants" (i.e. a New York/Brooklyn accent for one episode).

Accents are a fascinating subject to me (I was a language major in school). In spite of the fabulous acting skills exhibited by both SMG and AH, for example, they have never managed to successfully do accents (SMG made a "stab" at a British accent in the original "Halloween" episode of Season 2, but gave it up after a few minutes; Alyson did what was probably the worst French accent ever in an episode of "100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd").

I wonder if AB can do accents? I wonder, since she married a "Kiwi", if Renee O'C can now do a New Zealand accent? Can Eliza Dushku do anything other than the Boston accent she affected for Faith?

Re: Accents

Postby Gatito Grande » Mon Nov 10, 2003 6:21 pm

When I first learned that LL was Kiwi (c. S1 of XWP), I was amazed---but she does have those Kiwisms that break in ("been" always comes out "bean"). Whereas I never heard Kevin "Ares" Smith slip up (and I've been told that his Kiwi accent was really *heavy*). And then there's Alexis, whose fake British accent sounds realer than his real American one! (Check out the movie The Misadventures of Margaret to hear AD sounding terrible as a Yank).

Oh, and Eliza's Boston accent isn't affected: she really hails from Beantown.

As lame as this show has been thus far, I wish it hadn't "bean" ;) cancelled. Did you know that someone else was originally cast---and even filmed---as Aunt Kate? They didn't even get the chance to write the role specifically for Lucy. Oh well, I just hope that the WB finds something outstanding for her do next year (w/ Renee as recurring guest star? I can dream can't I? :pray )

GG Maybe Aly's sitcom will allow for the occasional funny accent? That would be interesting. :hmm Out
