Kitty film rec: Mulholland Drive

Postby NoveltyAct » Fri Mar 29, 2002 4:35 pm

Apologies to the mods if this kind of OT thread is not allowed now (i.e. in non-hiatus season)...

Just wanted to give Kitties a heads up on a gay-friendly new film, David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive." The central characters are a wide-eyed wannabe actress and a prototypically film-noirish femme fatale with amnesia, who cross paths in L.A. and eventually become romantically involved (in a hand-fanning R-rated scene worthy of the nortiest fanfic. as my gf turned to me in the theater and put it, "well. whoo.")

Warning though: if you know anything about David Lynch (who is the guy behind "Twin Peaks" and "Blue Velvet"), you will know that his movies are not to everyone's taste. Very weird. Disturbing imagery. Unexplained bits of plot. *Never an uplifting ending.* BUT, I liked this film the best of anything he's done (and not just because of the lesbians )--languid, dreamlike, quirkily laugh-out-loud funny at moments, and actually making a fascinating, Moebius-strip kind of sense at the end. Lynch has explained his film as merely this: "A love story in the city of dreams."

Anyway. Cineasts and those who love to dissect and analyze (as I did in my English-major days), should definitely see it. And the lead actress, Naomi Watts (she plays the wide-eyed ingenue)--keep an eye out for her. She was absolutely, speechlessly, stunning, acting-wise (gf chimes in, "and really cute, too." gf receiving a Tara-in-IWMTLY-like look right now. )

Hmmm let me say again that anything of interest to gays and lesbians is on topic.
Now, if I spot this movie on my side of the big pond, I shall go and take a looksie. It sounds interesting. Thanks.

Btw, I don't think it is ever necessary to apologize for starting a thread, be it OT or not, if it is a subject that could go in an existing thread, it can always be transplanted by the mods or their minions, it gives them something to do besides being slutty in chat.

Yeah, Judy - I gotta say that, as far as showing a positive representation of a lesbian relationship, the movie really doesn't deliver. So don't go to see it for the relationship. But DO go to see it because, in every other way, it is an astounding peice of work. It's the most challenging and bizarrely beatiful thing I've seen on a movie screen in a long time. And the best part for me was that, seeing a movie that is so surreal in a mall megaplex theater was, in itself, a surreal experience. I hadn't seen so many confused audience members get up and walk out of a movie since, well, Blue Velvet. Everyone should really at least give it a chance, because there are some incredible images and sequences in it. Not for everybody's taste, and certainly not a feel-good film, but if you're in the mood to be challenged and shocked and puzzled by great art, go for it.

I do my very best for you my spangly friend

I have yet to hear any rumours regarding Naomi Watts, however I have been fairly reliably informed that Portia de Rossi (from Ally McBeal) has been in a relationship with another woman for 4 years......see, we Aussie girls are not only gorgeous, but living that wicca lifestyle

Hi there lovely semiramis,
Interesting about Portia - i remember reading something in a New Weekly along those lines a while ago.

I'd really like to see this movie, but up here in north QLD we're probably not going to get this for quite a while

Well, stone the crows, Portia & Guin Turner.......my mind is boggling as I write.
I strongly suspect she has approved of these photo's - perhaps this is her way of coming out. There can be no denying what sort of relationship she has with Francesca in these photo's.

Oh, & I totally forgot to say hello to dear miss_spangles & thank her for lovely thoughts. My hair is as long as Portia's, but my attempts at glamour, not quite so successful.......

Sheesh, what sort of magazine were those pictures in, those headlines are appalling.

The aussie mag which had the same pics (& more) used captions like
"She & Francesca share a quiet moment" (on the chest touching pic)
"Lazy days in LA for Portia & girlfriend" (on the dogwalking pic)
"the girls exchange tender kisses and hugs" (when they are, um, kissing & hugging)

The final paragraph states
"today she is clearly more comfortable and content with being her own woman". There isnt a "shocking" to be seen. And bear in mind, the aussie mag with these pics is your typical "knit your own Royal Family while pursuing this fool proof diet" kinda trash mag.
All the exclamations are saved for a story on 13yr olds getting liposuction, which really is shocking...........

I say, go Portia, be happy, welcome to the club

Good points, Zahir. I think AH and SMG are in the category of naturally uber-petite gals, and Callista might be too, but hearing testimonies from the likes of Courtney Thorn- Smith about the immense pressure in Da Biz for normal sized women to be as thin as death is important as well.

Just wanted to say that I finally saw this movie last night, and mainly because of this thread! I had never seen a Lynch film, so I didn't know what the hoopla was all about regarding the movie. After reading bits of this thread however my curiosity was piqued.

So me and the gf trotted down to the Shattuck Cinema last night and caught it. There are few movies I feel are worth my 10$ but this easily was. It was SO AWESOME! Insane...disjointed...a twistedly funny mindbender!
My gf and I left feeling giddy and we argued for a good two hours, each insisting the other was wrong. We gave each other interperetations to chew on, but after it all settled on agreeing that we disagree.
Anything that can give me something to mull over for more than a few minutes I treasure.
Mmm. Thank you kitties for making me feel happily disturbed - theres no better way to spend a friday night with your SO. =P

To bump this thread wayyyyyy back from obscurity (and back on topic)… I finally saw Mulholland Drive last night and to quote every Keanu Reeves movie… “Whoah!”
(What follows could constitute spoilers…)
.
.
.
What a trippy dream folded into reality served up on a surrealist platter. Classic Lynch. Aggressively weird but also strangely beautiful. I loved Naomi Watts as Betty/Diane. I actually had to check the credits to make sure they were one in the same, her turn as both was so different.

I wouldn’t call the lesbian relationship healthy by any standards. But it was hot (and I too love the “Have you ever done this before?” “I don’t know.” Line). And it follows along the line of all Lynch-ian love affiars. In violent, crazed tragedy. But the dream portions were wonderful. The moment in bed when it goes from goodnight kiss to gimme-some-more kiss just crackles with sexual energy.
.
.
.
(end of spoilers)
I turned this movie over and over in my dreams last night (appropriate) and then again at lunch today with my friend who I saw it with. I found this Salon article helps for those still scratching their heads. Answer some of your questions here

Well, now that came out a lot more lesbian than it sounded in my head.

The New York Film Critics Circle just named this their Best Picture of 2001, which rather unexpectedly puts it in the hunt for an Oscar nomination, albeit as a dark horse. Hopefully, the unbelievable performance of Naomi Watts will get some attention; I think she definitely deserves a nomination, she was just spectacular in this movie. Here's the article:

Apparently it will open in Australia on 7th March 2002. (I got the info from here)

And check out how high ppl are scoring Mulholland Drive at that link. The average score on imdb is now 8.4/10.
That's very high. And it makes it one of the Top 250 films of all time, according to them.

Well, I just saw Mulholland Drive.

And.

Well, there is no short way to explain this movie. At the end, I actually felt a bit ANNOYED by it, because it was quite confusing.
Director David Lynch just seemed to be jumping around from scene to scene, switching his characters around to show that THIS person had actually been THAT person all along, and this and that had never happened, etc...hmph!

All I will say is this (And I'm pretty sure of what I'm about to say. But don't worry, it ain't a spoiler - you're gonna need all the help you can get)....

Half of the movie is a DREAM, the other half of it is REAL, and WE have to try and figure out which is which, because it's all quite jumbled and interspersed by the end.
If you're mystery-minded, and like that sort of thing, then definitely go see it.

The lesbian attraction between the characters (beautiful Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring - omg!) is real, although whether or not it is fulfilled for real in the story (i.e. whether the romantic scenes we see were part of the dream, or the reality) is questionable.
They were nice, anyways.

Overall, I had two lingering thoughts after seeing it. One was - "What just happened?".

And the other one was "OMG, Laura Elena Harring is gorgeous!"

I guess i'm a simple girl.

I have no idea what Amanda Rogers aka Portia is up to but good for her

As for Naomi Watts many Aussies may remember her with joy as being the girl who turns down the dinner with Tom Cruise for a roast lamb dinner (a TV ad), this film also includes fellow Aussies..Marcus Graham, Melissa George and Lisa Lackey..the last 2 UK people may recognise from Home & Away

The more distance I get from this movie, the more I like it. It’s strange, obviously. But that’s just part of David Lynch's vision. He believes that not everything makes sense – nor should it. And he is right. I actually think (after a lot of thought…nights of thought…and reading competing theories on what the frilly heck was going on) this movie does make some sense.

I see it as a rather poignant look at the death of a dream. And the more symbolic death of the dream of Hollywood. This young woman comes to Hollywood filled with all the hopes and aspirations of any young actor. What she finds is corrupt and dirty and hard. In her despair she envisions a world where she is the fresh-faced ingenue she always pictured herself – she gets the job and the girl with “aw shucks” aplomb. But when she wakes she’s back in her old sad life. Where she has taken violent actions to end her collective nightmare.

Or at least that’s how I saw it.

p.s. Thanks for the clip. Now that scene I don't mind turning over and over in my head...

Hi all,

Bumping this up b/c earlier in the thread folks were discussing Portia DiRossi:

quote:
Originally posted by Sarah-B:
And hey, here's more info on the Portia De Rossi thing - her girlfriend Francesca is actually the step daughter of Ringo Starr (yes, the guy from the Beatles), and she is also a singer. (Did anyone else mention this?? Sorry if they did)

Found this over on E! Online today in Ted Casablanca's Blind Vice column:

Okay, here's what all you straight boys fantasize about (never figured that one out). Oh, zip up and behave. Get the randy rice out, for a certain foxy vixen is tying the knot with an equally fetching she-babe.

This past weekend, the fashion horse (more of a thoroughbred, I must say) threw an intimate gathering to celebrate her upcoming nuptials.

The invitees were thrilled to see this rising TV star paired with her girlfriend, who (pay attention) is the daughter of the woman currently linked to an aging pop star. Hint: more past 40 than top 40, if you catch my rocky drift.

I'll just bet her betrothed is more than happy to share this blond bombshell's closet full of funky, fun threads.

Best of luck, sugarplums!

Cool, que no?

Hey there everyone,

I've finally watched this great movie too and I really liked it. I don't know all the David Lynch movies, besides the Twin Peaks Series and the Twin Peaks Film, but I liked this one very much. And now...I'm just crazy about Naomi Watts, she's so gorgeous and such a brilliant actress!
Well, I wouldn't really say, that i really understood everything, which was told in this weird story but when I think about it, which i often do, since I've seen it yesterday, I'm kinda getting to understand it more and more a bit...
But i couldn't look at it all the time, cause I'm such a big scaredy-cat!
For example, the scene with the two guys who go outside the cafe and see someone (something?) around the corner. Oh god, right in the moment it came out, I got a shock and just looked somewhere else, as fast as I could....
Who's a bigger scared-cat than me...
When I saw Twin Peaks the first time, i always had to have my big sister joining me, or i wouldn't have been able to watch it...*gee*
Anyway, i really liked the movie, like all of you guys too. The love scene was very nice and I loved Rita's/Camilla's answer:
"I don't know"...
