Has anyone read/written anything about how/if Monster fits into The Cliche? I haven't seen it, and I don't think it precludes it being good if it does, but I've been wondering what Kittens would think about this. One of the main arguments against the doT was that it was done in a cliched manner. But if "we" embrace Monster, which certainly seems from description to be just as cliched, we back into a larger argument: Whether the doT was offensive not because it was cliched, but because it was bad artistically speaking.

The problem is that it is a true story. The decision to make the film is cliched because it seems that is the only story about lesbians that hollywood wants to make. However, it is true, so the actual story, cliched as it might be couldn't have been made differently. There is a monster thread now, so I will post some thoughts about monster there.

This guy says LOTR: ROTK shouldn't get an oscar because it's all special FX. Don't know what movie he was watching but I thought Sir Ian, Sean Astin and Viggo Mortenson did some great acting.

Effects run rings around storytelling

(KRT) - Are we ready to give an Oscar for best picture to a film that's a mythic tale plus special effects with no acting worth noting?

Probably.

"The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" won more Oscar nominations last week than any other film. Hollywood watchers say it's sure to win best picture, even though none of its vast cast was nominated for acting awards.

The movie is all awe and no ahhh, all wow and wahoo and no moments you want to watch over and over again for insight into the human condition. But that seems to be what wins repeat viewers and mountainous profits.
This is the sort of snobbishness that has prevented recognition of excellent genre movies. Cetainly. LOTR and Peter Jackson deserve and oscar far more than Gibson and "Braveheart" or "Dances with Wolves" IMHO.

That's funny. Not long ago, I was able to tape FOTR (when it was shown on a Free Preview weekend). I had seen it twice in the theater, but looked forward to seeing it again---which I did, for the story. The thing that surprised me, is that right after I watched it, I immediately watched it again---for the performances. Just to drink in all the incredible acting.

GG I mean, just think of where the "Shire Five" (the Hobbits plus Gandalf) are at the start of that film (and the saga), as compared to where they are at the end of FOTR: Amazing transformation! :clap Out

ETA: to say nothing of Cate, who could rock my world reading the phone book . . . :heart

Ditto and ditto...

Do I rewatch and just skip ahead to bits with amazing effects? No, I don't! Especially because they did such an amazing job with them that they just disappear into the story. Sheesh!

And yes, she's on some strange sorta drugs!

Wow.

There are so many amazing performances in there. Lots of great moments.

It always gets to me in FotR when Frodo thinks Aragorn wants to take the ring. The tears in Aragorn's eyes...

And Sam.... :heart

Is there a hyphen in anal-retentive?
