Re: 11/18 Episode

I'd have to agree with the episodes seeming pointless this year. I'm really watching the show for the secondary characters (that sounds familiar from another show we've watched, doesn't it? ;-) like Lane, Paris, and really, almost everyone in Stars Hollow as well as the (grand)parents. Lorelai has become increasingly mean and unlikable and Raury often is too when she's with Lorelai.

WB studio: much GG

Postby sam7777 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 12:00 pm

I visited the WB studios in Burbank during the holidays and the backlot is all Stars Hollow. When I went they had fake snow out for a winter ep. They actually staple the leaves brown or green for the scenes or in this case take them off for that snowy look. My first visit there was Metropolis for "Lois and Clark". My second visit I saw the "Brimstone" sets which were cool enough to make me watch the show (this is my 3rd visit over 10 years of visiting family in SoCal). The ER stuff has remained the same with the same area used for the entry way for the hospital (with basket ball court). It was funny to find out, that part of "The Last Samurai" was filmed in "Stars Hollow" so to speak. They used one of the backlot street extensively redressed for part of that movie. The samurai rode down near the Stars Hollow video store. I also saw the Friends set but having never seen the show, I didn't know till they told us. They were prepping somw swing sets for the last eps (looked like a hotel room) I've seen a couple of eps of GG so I was in a better postition to recognize Stars Hollow. However, my biggest exceitment this go arund was seeing the facade for the White House for the West Wing because I've watched more eps of that than any other WB show and of course to hear about Bladerunner.

I'm not surprised that "Gilmore Girls" got an early pickup. The WB has invested quite a bit in dressing their backlot for that show.

Episode 17 spoilers

Postby willowlove » Mon Feb 09, 2004 2:12 pm

Given the lack of posts here, I get the feeling I'm the only one that is going to care about this post, but I still want to see if there is any reaction to these episode 17 spoilers I found at Gilmore Girls.org. I have edited the item slightly.

Episode Seventeen: Girls in Bikinis, Boys Doin' the Twist

Rory and Paris go somewhere that's warm and has a beach for spring break. They stay at the "Sea Sprite" hotel. Rory brings her school stuff and Paris mocks her. Madeline, Louise, Janet and Glenn are there too. There are typical spring break hijinks; fun, craziness, flirting, Rory wondering if two sleeping guys are alive, Glenn eating a lot of hot dogs, etc.

Rory flirts with a guy named Sean. They keep running into each other and flirt tentatively, smiling shyly and stuff.

Rory, Paris, Madeline, and Louise go to a club where the Shins are playing. Madeline and Louise try to get drinks even though they're underage. They're stamped with the blue "underage" mark, but wipe them off and lick older guys' hands and transfer those stamps to their own hands. They offer Paris and Rory drinks, but Rory says "Maybe later." Paris enters a banana-eating contest, not understanding that it's an erotic banana-eating contest. Paris and Rory talk about kissing. Paris wants to know if she's a good kisser, and she can't ask a guy because that'll mean she has low self-esteem. She kisses Rory and asks if she's a good kisser. Rory is put off by her actions and tells Paris she's not her type. Sean teases Rory, asking if Paris is her girlfriend. Rory is embarrassed and runs away.

Paris and Rory watch TV in their hotel room.

Reactions, anyone?

Re: Episode 17 spoilers

Postby BBOvenGuy » Mon Feb 09, 2004 2:19 pm

Wow, that sounds positively dreadful.

Funny thing, though - the last time I tried watching the GG's was the episode where Lorelai kept teasing Rory about how the woman who organized the "living art" thingy wanted Rory to be her girlfriend. That's when I turned it off. Now we have Rory getting kissed by Paris and then being mocked for it.

Am I reaching if I see the hand of Calamity Jane in all this? :hmm

Man, she sucked face with two of the most boring guys on earth and now she gets upset when Paris kisses her? It better be because she liked it more than she wants to admit, otherwise boo and hiss on Rory. Paris is awesome. And oh yeah, I am sure this is all a ratings gimmick and in no way a prelude to either Paris or Rory coming out, so boo and hiss on this whole kiss business as well as on Rory´s reaction. How accurate are GG spoilers? Could this be fanfic instead of fact?

I've continued to watch the show but haven't cared enough to check the spoilage, so this is the first time I've heard of this plot. It sounds...troubling. But i'll wait to judge it until I've watched it. And I will watch it, esp. since Madeline and Louise are appearing.

As for the recent eps that I've watched and not commented on, they've been pretty uniformly mediocre. Not awful but not in any way memorable. Sadly you haven't missed much, Bob. I still hope that the show will return to something approaching the old standard of quality, but that hope is getting pretty thin.

Last night's episode

Postby tyche » Wed Feb 11, 2004 2:07 pm

I think I'll be avoiding ep. 17 - it sounds pretty horrible from the spoilers. They need to send Calamity Jane back to Loserville. Now.

Last night's ep was actually not bad, though I did find myself flicking between GG and American Idol. The writing was somewhat less blah than it has been for most of this season. And Luke getting drunk was kind of cute. (Not drunk enough to take off that bloody baseball cap, though.) And the exchange between Jason and his father was just priceless.

Lord, I am glad that Jess left again. At the end of the episode, I turned to my husband and said that Jess was the Spike of Gilmore Girls, minus the rape stuff. Milo V. is a good actor, but his character just annoys me no end. I was so hoping that either Rory or Lorelai would punch Jess in the face for just leaving without saying anything. Ah well, at least he's gone...

Re: Last night's episode

I have downloaded the first 8 episodes of the 4th season now so I can play catch up. I liked the first three I have seen, especially episode 3 with the LotR party. Too little Paris for my taste and I missed Lane, but so far so good. There was a preview of episode 4 where apparently Dean intends to get married. Seriously not looking forward to seeing snoring boring Dean again, but I intend to watch it all now so I can either rant or rave.

Edited to add: Well I just watched episode 4 and rant it is. I cannot believe the difference between this one and every previous episode. This blew chunks. Big ones. Not only was it boring, it was also seriously annoying. I was wishing someone would come along and rip off both Kirk´s and Taylor´s heads. I guess every show is entitled to a few total crap episodes, my favourite show Star Trek DS9 had a few in it´s 7 year run, so this was bound to happen here as well.

Re: Last night's episode

I've managed to flush that episode out of my memory banks completely, so I honestly can't remember if it was written by our Typhoid Mary of television, the one and only Calamity Jane.

The spoilers for ep 17 don't say if she wrote it, but it certainly seems like it has her greasy paws all over it. Maybe I'll just tape it and watch the bits that Madeline and Louise are in, that should be reasonably safe.

And yes, this week's ep was an improvement. Amy wrote it, and though her overall story arc for this season is underwhelming, she still writes the characters better than anyone else. She actually seemed to be trying to make Jess a little less annoying, but the damage is already done. Sadly, bringing back Dean is only a marginal improvement.

Yeah, this was the first time in a while I was able to sit through an episode and not get really irritated at every single person on the screen. The only time it got annoying to me was at the dinner with Richard and Emily. I love them dearly, but that whole thing just was blah to me.

Rory does continue to bug me when she has more than a couple of lines. I'm not sure why.

I liked Lorelai this episode. I especially liked her being concerned about Lane and Lane's troubles with her mom. That was a very short but nicely done scene. Lane needs a hug.

Lorelai and Luke were good together this ep too. A lot of the time their interactions just make me want to reach for the FF button. It was nice to see Lorelai actually concerned for him and it not be born of some weird jealousy over another woman.

Bye Jess, don't come back anytime soon.

Episode 4 was indeed written by Calamity Jane. I haven't made it through a full episode since then.

Whatever possesed them to hire that woman. I did not know she had her paws on that episode until I reread this thread. It explains a lot. I´m glad I am not a real fan, so I won´t care too much if it crashes and burns. It´d be sad because I do like the show, I´d rather she´d ruin a show that was already crap. I can think of a few.

I caught a couple of eps last season that I liked but when I learned JaneE was writing decided to skip the show this season. Even seeing the back lot stuff at the WB studio in December did not movitvate me to tune in. OTOH my last WB visit got me to watch Brimstone. Amy Palladino should think about trmiing the dead weight from her writing staff.

No Bob it wasn´t just you. Now that I have shrugged off most of the aggravation that episode caused me it does amuse me in a mean sort of way. It underlines my low opinion of that woman once again. On the upside, at least she sucks consistently. Anyway, I watched episode 6 and that one was quite enjoyable. It´s the one where Kirk goes on his date and Lorelai´s mother hires her to do the catering for that party that gets cancelled. I like Emily Gilmore and I thought she was great in this episode. It had a few great lines and some sweet and touching moments. So basically, except for that horrible 4th episode I am enjoying this season so far.

Well I watched 7 and 8 now and on the whole I am still positive, heh. Most of it is silly, but so far I still get enough laughs out of it to enjoy it. As long as I don´t feel like throttling most of the characters, like I did in that dreaded ep 5, I´ll settle for it being somewhat less than previous seasons.

Season 1 DVDs

Postby sam7777 » Sat Feb 21, 2004 2:11 am

Not a fan but ran across this info. You can find more information on the season 1 DVDs here.
Quote:
The Gilmore Girls: The Complete First Season DVD extra content will include:

Gilmore Girls Beginnings - a documentary including interviews with the show's creator, cast and crew

Gilmore-isms - a montage of the witty comments coined on the show

Gilmore Goodies and Gossip - Trivia pops on-screen during Rory's Dance

Additional and Deleted Scenes

Since its network debut, Gilmore Girls has averaged 4.5 million viewers overall and is The WB's #1 program in its timeslot among females 12-24, key demographics for The WB.
Reading the last line, it's not hard to see why the WB quickly renewed the show despite some dissappointment this season. Once Amy Palladino gets rid of the toxic waste on the writing staff, I'm sure it will bounce back to goodness.

Another dodgy joke

Postby tyche » Thu Feb 26, 2004 1:35 pm

Did anyone catch the exchange between Paris and Rory in this week's episode? Rory has a cold, and Paris says that she's going to sleep with the other girls (so that she won't catch her cold.) Rory then says something like "how very 'The L-Word.'" Calamity Jane strikes again.

Also, I get the feeling that Dean isn't too happy in his marriage. Though mainly I wish he would get a bloody haircut! (Or some hair gel. I'm not fussy.)

Re: Another dodgy joke

Postby seurat » Thu Feb 26, 2004 7:59 pm

Oh, I noticed. Hard to miss a clanger like that. Calamity didn't write the ep, but yeah either her pawprints are on that line or just the evil malaise or having her around is having an effect. This was not a good ep, but at least a distinct improvement over the previous one, the meltdown ep where both Rory and Lorelai end up sobbing in the arms of some conveniently placed guy. (At least Rory didn't have her meltdown with Jess, that would have driven me screaming from the room.) If it wasn't for Lane the ep would have been a complete waste of time, for me at least. Lane was the highlight of this new ep too, I'm glad they are moving her story along. But really, at what point did Star's Hollow become the new nexus for all the negative energy in the universe? :hmm Wow, the answer is on the tip of my tongue... Oh, and next week an occasional character dies and there will be even more weeping. Just what we need.

Mollyig, the only good thing I can say is that I'm still watching the show now, that I still care about the characters, and that I still have some hope that it will turn out ok. I sort of envy you watching those early ep's for the first time, they are great fun.

Last nights episode

Postby BohemianKitten » Wed Mar 03, 2004 7:46 am

There were some good lines in last nights ep. of Gilmore Girls! To sum it up briefly for those of you who missed it: Lorelai's grandmother DIED. So Richard's a mess, and Emily is running around trying to plan the funeral. Then they find a letter to Richard, BEGGING him not to marry Emily. It's from the grandmother! So Emily refuses to have anything more to do with the woman, and gets horribly drunk. :sigh

One good moment, however, was this: The grandmother wanted to be buried in fresh clothes. Well, Lorelai got fresh clothes except for underwear! Rory's comment:

"Grams is going commando?"

Ok, maybe I'm weird, but I found it funny.

What did you all think?

Well, last night's ep was not as bad as the first one written by Calamity Jane, but that's like saying that having a cold isn't as bad as having flu...

At least there was no Dean and his bloody annoying hair. And Emily got a few good moments, especially when she was reading the letter. However, as in the first ep JE wrote, a lot of the jokes seemed forced.

Re: Last nights episode

Postby seurat » Wed Mar 03, 2004 3:39 pm

Granted, it wasn't JE's worst script. But my heart still sank when I saw her name pop up with the writer's credit. And my heart was already pretty low knowing what was due to happen in this ep. So the good news is, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. She did move the Nicole/Luke story on towards the predictable conclusion. And I did find Rory more appealing in this ep than she has been in awhile, but JE still couldn't write her way out of a soaking wet paper bag. Hopefully this does mean that the upcoming Paris/Rory kiss ep

wasn't written by Calamity, so perhaps it won't suck too much and somebody who can write dialogue will do the Madeline/Louise lines.

I will kinda miss the great-grandmother, she was a character. And what's with the cousin? Am I correct in thinking that she's the widow of the Star Trek creator? Very strange to see her on the show.
