'DADT'

Postby COMMA » Tue Oct 19, 2010 6:43 pm

For those that do not know, I am retired US Army. I was retired when 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' became policy. I have always hated that a persons sexual orientation could decide if a person could volunteer to defend this great country. I received the following information, on Saturday, from a Marine Recruiter.

Military recruiters have been informed that gay men and lesbians can now enlist, but 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' may be reinstated at sometime in the future. While the policy letter goes on to explain that all recruits will now be treated the same, there are two things that the letter does nor cover: 1. Are gays and lesbians , who sign up, required to state their sexual orientation? and 2. What happens to gays and lesbians if 'DADT' is renstated?

A third question, that no one has the answer to right now, is 'Can those dismissed under 'DADT, rejoin'?.

Time will tell.

Hi,

I do a lot of theatre, so lots of us are LGBT and it's no big deal. So I've never had to worry about being fired over loving women.

The information speaks for itself; we have had heroes (and heroines) of every kind.

My heart goes out to anyone who stands up courageously to do what's right.

Take care,

Ariel

The new abolishment of the DADT policy was something that I have following for a little while.

I guess because I'm Canadian I just don't get it. I'm not trying to sound 'un-American' or disrespectful in anyway, but after witnessing so much recruitment from the military branches because of the events that have happened over the past 20 years, I just don't understand how the government could stand (or afford) to hold something such as sexual orientation against recruits. I have a lot of friends and family in the Canadian military. They are brave beyond belief for what they do to stand up for my rights and the rights of others. So why not let people help when they want to?

I was so excited to see DADT overturned in the courts. I really hope it stays that way and is not reinstated like (Prop 8, anyone?). I think the steps are being taken in the US to make it a more accepting society, but, like a lot of things, movement has to be made from the top before a lot of people will follow along. This is a step in the right direction. And here's to hoping it continues to do so.
