Like Gorn and the football thread, here is a thread about this soon to come event: the World Cup of Rugby.

Being french I can't escape the advertising abou tit, and all the merchandasing. Since it wil take place in France.
I saw that some matches will take place near my town... ^^

Anyway, make your pronostics, tell us who is your team... And have fun

*** no no no... I am not with the French team... or maybe a little bit... Especially if they play in their outfit of the "Dieux du Stade"'s calendar (yes I am lesbian, but I can appreciate a little cute ass... even if it is one of a man ^^)***

I confess I don't follow rugby, but I think it's a great sport. One of my best friends is an insane New Zealander (I later discovered they're all actually like that), and every once in a while the All Blacks would stop by in Tokyo (on their way to a genuine rugby-playing country, of course) and he'd drag me along to see them play an exhibition game. I'm thinking there probably ought to be a law banning Maori from the game. Particularly when playing against the Japanese.

As an American, there's one thing I've never really understood about the All Blacks ... they don't actually have a single black guy on the team. What's up with that?

Well I supposed there would not have so many answers on a USAn board... but being a world cup, and here being with so many people..

Oh and Yay! an event taking place in France! lol

I only watch i occasionaly, well not having TV helps.... but.... I will try to watch some on internet...

Violent sport... but I don't know why, I like it ^^

Given that I am one of those insane New Zealanders that gorn so lovingly refers to I thought I had better bump this thread up as the start is just tomorrow night!! Like 99.99% of Kiwis I am bouncing off the walls with excitement about this event..basically because we go in with very high hopes of winning. I'm being optimistic, given that we havent won since 1987 I'll say it's our turn to win again.

As an American, there's one thing I've never really understood about the All Blacks ... they don't actually have a single black guy on the team. What's up with that?

I can sort of answer that for you, when the phrase was first coined (way back in 1905) it was a English reporter saying that the whole team ran as 'All Backs' and somehow it got changed in All Blacks and I guess because of the team colours it just kind of stuck.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching the matches...I also do a farily good job of convicng my mother I'm straight by discussing the relative physical attributes of the players!

Yesterday I have "met" in the street a big group of big guys... They were visiniting my town. They are the USAn team, they stay in my town during the event and trained here.

So Tonight, 21:00 (Paris' hour), the first match will take place in the Stade de France of Paris.
France will meet Argentina (how ironic is that Aggie? lol ) for the first match of Pool D.

New Zealand will have their first match on Saturday afternoon, 13:45 (Paris' hour), againt Italy [pool C]. I wish them luck because I think they are a good team... even if they scare me a bit. Oh wait for now they aren't in the same pool so we're safe!

For the Pool B, Japan (see Gorn they have a rugby team ) will meet Australia.

For the Pool A, they got the best region to play... Not the best town but still ^^.. England will meet the USA.

See y'all tomorrow night for the results of the first day.

Should I dare bring this up? But didn't France lose in the first round?

Poor sweet JujuDeRoussie. A week of mourning or am I entirely wrong?

It was not an auspicious start for the French but I'm sure they'll bounce back as the French can!

The All Blacks on the otherhand demolished poor Italy...and on Saturday night we play Portugal which also might be a one sided affair, should be plenty of try scoring action! It's great to see all these countries involved

Yeah I didn't put the results here.... Not that I am ashamed... I think the French team is great... on calendars!!
no, seriously I just forgot to check the other matches... I know that the All Blacks have demolished Italy...

What makes me laugh is that just before the first match, a newspaper made an article on "Why French are feared by other countries?" (about rugby of course)...

What I don't get is that the match doesn't take place in France.. weird for a World Cup taking place in France huh?

Well seems the French Rugby men's world cup ends here. Or maybe we'll be a bit lucky.

I just hope our player won't be too much hurt... They have some calendars to make for charity ^^

Yes, it is a rather unfortunate match up for your team...but I do not think it will be anything but a tough game, the French always play hard against the All Blacks!

It will be a good game to watch! We havent had any good match ups so far this World Cup, we have played only soft teams so it will be good for some tough opposition!

Is there any team out there that does anything even as vaguely intimidating as the Haka?

Well, the Tongan and Samoan teams have their own native versions of a haka but neither are as well known nor as frightening as ours (IMO).

The Italians before the first game turned their backs to the All Blacks as they were doing the haka which was very offensive and as well as not respecting it, it also meant that they were ignoring the challenge laid down to them. It is a great honour to be confronted with a haka.

There's a little cultural lesson for the day!

Well I think they know better now? lol They got a lesson from the All Blacks lol

I can't think of another team doing something as impressive as the Haka.
I may be one track minded but our calendar is the most impressive thing our team does. So maybe we should show the pictures before a match, maybe it would distract our adversaries? lol

The match against the All Blacks was great!! Especially since we won

We're almost at the end now...

On the 13th of October, France will meet England... Allez Les Bleus!
On the 14th of October South Africa will meet Argentina...

And then there will have the finals !!! So I am glad because we are guaranted to be 4th!

So next week France and Argentina will play (again!) for the 3rd rank.
The next day South Africa and England will play for the big step! Go South Africa (no no no I am not a bad looser! I just... well.... maybe I am... ^^ )

Well you saw the games so, it seems is not really a bad team i dont care of it, but...

Congratulations to the Springboks...but whatever way you look at it, the All Blacks were robbed of victory by the referree, France scored their winning try with a forward pass...
...but I'm not bitter, I got over it at least a week ago. Here's looking forward to the next World Cup which of course will be in New Zealand, hopefully I can go watch some of the games!
