Part of me wants to send them a short e-mail. I've even gone so far as to compose one:
[The writer] thinks Buffy fans rasing $3,000 "to bring an Israeli fan to the U.S. for a five-city tour" was "the greatest random act of PayPal" she's witnessed?
In 2002, The Kitten Board, devoted to Buffy's gay characters Willow & Tara, raised over $8,000 for The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization that runs a suicide hotline for gay youth.
Surely by any logical standard, that's a greater act of kindness than buying anyone-even the nicest person-some airline tickets.
But then I thought, maybe I just need to move on and let go. I'd already nearly made peace with the fact that practically every freakin' issue of EW contains some reference to Whedon and/or his series, whether newsworthy or not.
And besides, acts of generosity probably isn't the kind of thing you want to be in competition about.
But I'm still not sure. What do you think?
I'm sure the tour was nice and the fan appreciated it, but we not only raised almost 3 times that, we did it to help random strangers we will never know. And it was in The Advocate!
