Shakespearean Dreams

Postby umgaynow » Sun May 06, 2007 2:20 pm

Many of the Buffy cast have referred to the Shakespeare readings they used to have at Joss' house...I know Amber played Romeo to Michelle's Juliet (lucky Michelle) Personally, I have been a huge Shakespeare fan as long as I can remember...

So, my question is...even if you are not an actor...if you could play any role from any of The Bard's plays, which one would it be?

I have always wanted to play The Nurse in Romeo & Juliet

How about Kate from the TAming of the Shrew? It's not a very women-friendly play but it's a very physical role (or at least the way Burton and Taylor did it).

I'd love to play Hamlet. I studied the text last year and have been entranced with it ever since. So in favour of the debated insanity and vengeful confusion, I choose Hamlet :)

Rosalind from As You Like It. I LOVE that play.

Or Romeo, but that was more of a childhood dream.

Love this thread in true British tradition I am a huge Shakespeare fan and I have studied hnis work for many years at school and at UNI. I played Juliet and Lady Mcbeth, I enjoyed both roles very much. I love any characters that are dark and complex because that is so unlike me and it is more of a challenge to play people who have more different sides to them. I also loved the play Anthony and Cleopatra, I also Love Othello because it has so many different themes that can be so relevant today, I would love to play Desdemona.

I once saw a version of Othello in Harlem where everyone was black, except for Othello. I was amazed no-one protested, but they did a really good job. They changed the words, too, so that references to Othello being dark were now "pale." Pretty interesting and surprising.

I'd have a pretty hard time playing Othello, though. Being tricked into murdering your wife isn't a road I'm all that keen to explore, to be perfectly honest. Iago, however, would be a different story - one of the all-time great villains. Villains are always so much more interesting.

Kind of a minor character, but I've always been intrigued by Caliban in The Tempest.

Gorn that thing about that Othello play sounds so interesting. My sister was also intrigued by Caliban and Iago.

Hmmm ... I'd keep an eye on her. Could be trouble.

I'm curious, though - what is it that attracts you to Desdemona? Most folks are kinda down on her for being so passive.

lol no my sister wouldn't hurt a fly its all good! :)
Desdemona well yes I guess she is passive but I guess it just made me sad that she was so innocent in it alll and had no idea about the deception that had gone on- the seeds of doubt that Iago had planted in Othello's mind, and she seems really innocent and in love with Othello and would do anything for him and I think I could capture that if I was to play her.

I can respect that. A lot of people I know went after Desdemona with a strong feminist slant which paints her in a rather negative light. I think I like your slant better. She's tragic in either case, but her overwhelming love for Othello is something that really ought to be admired, not put down. Would that any of us recieved such devotion, or were that devoted ourselves, you know? Kind of Tara-esque in a way.

Yes indeed I agree her love for Othello does deserve to be admired. Tara-esque? I had not thought of that but yes I agree with that also. :)

I'd think either Rosencrantz or Guildenstern would be fun...or perhaps Puck...or on the serious side Mercutio...he has all the great lines...come to think of it Beatrice or even Benedick....gotta love the verbal sparring and sarcasm...Amber would make a wonderful Beatrice

I was going to say Viola from Twelth Night, but Rosencrantz or Guildenstern sounds so much more fun! I'd also love to play Ophelia; the scene where she's gone insane after her father's death would be so much fun to play and so interesting to explore at the same time... :peace
