Around the World in 80 pics -- READ THE RULES!

Postby watty » Wed Apr 11, 2007 4:42 am

Warning: This thread is graphics intensive and has lots of pictures, so if you are on a slow connection it will take a long time to load, so please be patient.

The idea of this game is to "travel" around the world not in 80 days, as depicted in the Jules Verne novel, but in 80 photos. We're not actually bothered about using exactly 80 photos, the important thing is the pleasure of travel and not the hurry.

Rules
  1. First poster posts a picture from a country. We always start and end in London since it is where the novel started.
  2. Next poster posts a picture from a neighbouring country, one that can be travelled from the previous location by a land or sea route. Flying takes the fun out of the game. It MUST be a neighbouring country, or another part of the same country. Click here for a map with names and locations of countries.
  3. Include a brief description of how to get there as well as what is in the picture. Remember, it's the pleasure of travelling, and part of that is sharing the experience with other people.
  4. The image must be hosted on your own webspace or an image hosting site. Do not hotlink! Examples of free image hosting sites are:
  5. It goes without saying that the picture must be your own, or you have permission to use it. It shouldn't be a problem with travel pictures, but please ensure the subject is tasteful. No art, scans of postcards, stock photos, drawings etc. This is a photography game.
  6. Do not post pictures that are too large. The mods will edit posts that mess up the margins. As a rule, the maximum size of the longest side should not exceed 500px. It's best to post a smaller image that links to a larger image, for an example of how to nest "url" and "img" tags the code I used to post the picture below is:
    Code: Select all

  7. When we return to London, we start the game again.
We start in London.

This is Albert Hall, where every September it is filled with balloons, whistles and the rousing chorus of Land of Hope and Glory. Take it from here, and Bon Voyage!

hey there ^^

Good idea watty!!

here it goes... People meet Stella Plage in France, on the "Côte d'Opale" in the Pas de Calais (north of France).
That beach is near another one famous for a moto race (Le Touquet). To get there you have to take a car... indeed the nearest train station is at something like 15 miles.
It's a touristic place, but not as much as Le Touquet or Berck Plage. But generaly this coast is famous for its dunes and their sepcial flora.
I hope you'll enjoy a little view of one of the french coasts ^^

Seems like it's just you and I, Julia. I hope more people can join in.

So from Stella Plage you drive about 2.5hrs (according to Google maps) to Paris. Here are two contrasting photos of Paris. The first is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, the Eiffel Tower. The second is of the Catacombs, a vast network of tunnels converted from quarries containing the bones of 5-6 million people. The catacombs came about in the late 18th century because cemeteries were becoming overcrowded. The picture isn't that good but those really are skulls and bones stacked up to form a wall. Only a fraction is open to the public and that experience was very eerie.

May be the next person can take us elsewhere in France (Alsace, Côte d'Azur?) or onwards to Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Andorra or Spain. If no one posts in 24 hours, I'm taking us to Monaco.

Sorry watty it seems we're not going see the Côte d'azur or Monaco just now ^^... a little slip through the north... to Amsterdam in Nederland... amsterdam is a beautiful city with sailors (I wish I could put a song here called "Amsterdam" by Jacques Brel but it's in french so ... lol)
Now this city is famous for her coffee shop where you can buy marijuana but also for some flowers: the tulip.
In amsterdam there is also some other stuff but I'm not sure I can explain it in english, sorry.
There is also a museum Van Gogh...

Have a good trip everyone!!

Hi All,

The idea is to share travel experiences using photos so it's more fun to use pictures taken by yourself, or your friends / family. This way we can also read about the place you're posting. I think that it's better if we stayed away from using stock photos since it's less "cozy personal" (if that is a description at all). My apologies for being not so clear.

Oh, also. When posting more than one picture side by side, remember to put a space between them, otherwise they mess up the margins in the same way if we don't put spaces between words in sentences.

Thanks to everyone who is playing and sharing. Travelling is so great!

Anyway, let's restart in Amsterdam shall we? So Belgium, Germany or even Denmark / Norway by boat? :)

ETA: I got the idea for this game from this flickr group, take a look at the stunning pictures there!

Beautiful picture of Cologne. We're staying in Germany, going further south to Munich. Here we have the famous Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady) at the background with a smaller replica at the top of the Glühweinstand, a stall that sells glüwein -- steaming hot, spicy mulled wine -- at the Christmas Market.
