future kitten lawyer needs some help

Postby kisstheviolets » Mon Jan 30, 2006 4:08 pm

hi kittens,

i'm not sure if this is an acceptable post, so mods please be gentle, but i find myself in a bit of a jam and am reaching to my friends, including those here at the kb. i'm a third year law student, and a very out and active lesbian who works in the civil rights arena. things have been rough financially and absent a miracle, i will likely not have the funds to pay off my tuition bill and pay for all of my bar exam related expenses. i know, it happens to good people all the time, and i certainly don't think myself anything special. but that doesn't make it any easier.

not one to be easily deterred, i got myself thinking about ways to get out of this predicament. we've all heard about people financing everything under the sun by selling weird things on ebay - toenail clippings and grilled-cheese sandwiches resembling the holy mother (one friend even saw a potato that looked like john lennon). so, i started thinking maybe i could use this very unconventional medium to work on my very real problem. please check out my ebay posting and forward the link to your friends. if you could even post to any other boards you're on you'll have my sincerest gratitude.

thanks so much kittens, you all are the best!

The eBay listing details made me laugh so hard that you can have the dosh just for making my sides ache!

Are there people out there who are ten times better than me? Absolutely. Did they come up with this kind of auction? Probably not.

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

I don't need a certificate, as I already have the warm glow (and there is no point dealing with the postage to the UK), so if you just want to PM me your PayPal details, and I'll send something over. Brilliant idea, hilariously executed!

ms. mcfine: i feel like all i've been doing lately is telling you how much you rock. excessive, maybe, but such a worthy endeavor that i shall continue into the forseeable future. thank you, thank you, thank you.

Alright, you sold me. I'm a sucker for brilliant ideas, and this one was just so cleverly and creatively planned and executed with just the right amount of humor that I find it very hard to resist, in fact so hard that I'm not going to even try. Kudos to you! :clap

Thank you so much Krazy Dreamer!! I see you were no match for my wacky wiley ways - that's just what I love to hear! The rest of you take heed, resistance is absolutely futile. :lol

I just want to thank, again, Candleshoe, Sally McFine, and now Krazy Dreamer plus the kittens who have sent me private message of encouragement. This is just such an awesome community and I feel really fortunate to be a part of it.

I'm still not sure how I'm going to get through all of this, but for the first time in a really long time, I feel pretty hopeful. Thanks for that, all of you.

Okay, the Hallmark moment has come to an end, you may now return to your regular kooky program schedule ;-)

hey kittens,

if any of you, like eirnlove want to help out but have questions about how you can do so, shoot me a PM and we can figure something out. i've had several pledges that are either going direct through paypal or via snail mail. so ebay is not the only option.

and super big thanks to watson for her generous gift and being the first to come from the great continent of asia! i'm so going to start mapping this!

thanks again to all of you for your help.

My pleasure, brandy. I hope you are able to reach your target.

Kittens, please spread the word. Post the link in your LJ, myspace, bloop, blog etc. Now with all the scam emails and the whole cyber begging business seemingly full of fakes -- just look at cyberbeg.com -- people have a right to be sceptical. I never for one minute doubted that this is genuine. I mean, I haven't met brandy in person or checked her credentials or anything and I'm usually suspicious of people on the internet. But one thing I've found about this community is that for the most part, people are who they say they are because this may be the only place where they can be themselves and not have to pretend.

oh my god, i'd never seen cyberbeg.com before. is that for real??? man, i hope i don't sound like that! i'm selling an actual product - just with a very high profit margin ;) i know there are a lot of scams out there and it's hard to "prove yourself" without getting stalkers or something. but here's something you can vouch me with: http://www.mlgba.org/briefs/April2004.PDF i'm really a gay and really in law school in massachusetts.

thanks again watson, this time for making such a sweet plug for me! there's only three days so if you guys can post this or email it to receptive people i'd really appreciate it.

my next wacky idea? t-shirts that read: "i put a lesbian through law school and all i got was this lousy t-shirt."

Make that available in a wide range of sizes, and not only will I buy one, I'll bet I could get a few more people to pitch in! Oh! You should try bumper stickers and buttons too! :D

Don't know if I'll be able to help you before the ebay auction expires, but as soon as I can, I'll PM you and get the information for a direct paypal transaction. Just give me a chance to get a couple of commission checks in. ;)

You are, of course, most welcome, Brandy. I find you very hilarious. You had me laughing in fits at your "Borg" comment. I admit that cleverness and creativity are my weaknesses. In fact, sometimes, when some of my employees want to leave early, I tell them, "If you can give me a really good reason why I should let you go home early, I just might." You should hear some of the whoppers they tell. It's really very entertaining. Nobody has yet come up with anything to really impress me, but I encourage them to keep trying.

Anyway, I hope you are able to raise enough money, and I wish you the best of luck. By the way, I really like the T-shirt idea.

I'd buy a t shirt too... :-D because this made me laugh out loud, again! the eBay description that just keeps giving...

Seller makes no warranty, express or implied, that purchase will result in the positive karmic blessings of any diety, higher power, universal energy, or any other entity not a party to the transaction. Seller does wonder, however, if you really want to chance it.

Carleen, Krazy and Candleshoe: I'm glad to hear that you guys dig the t-shirt idea. We'd been thinking of making up pervy legal t-shirts for a fundraiser for OUTlaw, the LGBT student group I'm President of (stuff like "I wanna pierce your corporate veil" or "partial performance is never okay") so one of my friends suggested we come up with a couple of ideas for t-shirts I can sell. If any of you have any ideas, let me know. I'll definitely keep you posted.

And thanks Car for your pledge, and big thanks to the super kitten who didn't want to be thanked publicly - surely this doesn't count ;)

"Check out our briefs."

that's freakin' hysterical! i LOVE it!

there was this case from first year torts about a woman who took her western union clock in to be fixed and this creepy dude told her "let me love and pet you and i'll fix your clock." how great would that be on a shirt with the case cite?

those are awesome candleshoe!!! i particularly like the "lawyers do it on a trial basis" - being a committmentphobe that shirt would be perfect for me! i know some family law attorneys who would love the "hell hath no fury...". i'll have to remember that one.

there's just a little over a day left on my ebay listing, and between it and paypal donations i've made about $500 so far. that'll be a nice payment to my school's banking office and get them off of my back for a while! thanks for all of your help kittens!

I am pleased to see that you can't even spell "commitment" :lol

I can never spell "marrai(ia?)ge" or "prof(f?)essional", so what does that say about me?

Getting wildly carried away here, but how about:

There are two kinds of lawyers, those who know the law and those who know the judge.

or as a spot of revenge:

What's the difference between a lawyer and a computer nerd?
Sooner or later everyone needs a lawyer

Or OT but maybe good on a T-Shirt:

All I ask is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy

and

There is no "I" in "Team", but there are four in "Platitude-Quoting Idiot".

I'd buy 'em....

that's brilliant, i love it! and most of the attorney's i know fall into one of those camps. hysterical. as is the "platitude quoting idiot." you should go into business candleshoe! hmm, i feel a joint venture coming on! :-)

btw, i'm getting better about the commitment thing, though apparently not in the spelling department! i think i just haven't met the right girl. when i do, i'll be less of a spaz, i'm sure.

ooh, there's only 23 hrs and 14 minutes left on my listing! tres exciting.

So I've been wondering how to gain social standing with a friend who has got the whole Boston lesbian attitude. (Is there a lesbian specific term that is the equivalent of "patronizing", cause there really should be....)

This is awesome. I can just put up my little certificate and WHAM - instant legitimacy for this little midwestern dyke.

See!? I'm OK! I Put a Lesbian of Color Thru Law School! A Massachusetts LoC no less!

Much luck and regards :lol ,

hahahahahaha Boschi, that's hilarious and exactly what I was hoping to bring to the world with my little certificates. I like the way you put it, "Instant legitimacy." Sometimes we all need a get out of a jail free card, or something tangible to prove we "get it." This will get that chick off of your back like that !

As for dealing with the Boston lesbian attitude... well, I live an hour and a half away in Western Massachusetts for a reason. :lol

Good luck with your friend and thank you so much for your support!!

hey kittens,

the ebay listing ended tonight and the grand total was: $330 on ebay, approx. $100 in direct-to-paypal contributions, and a couple of checks are coming in (i made a typo in an earlier post, that said I'd made $500 when at the time it was $400). i'm totally overwhelmed with gratitude at the moment. my listing started out as a way for me to cheer myself up and feel like i was being proactive about my situation. i figured it'd get yanked by ebay (despite my careful wording to get around their policies... yay law school for something) and could not have expected the generous outpouring of support it prompted.

i still have a long way to go but this'll be a nice chunk of change to pay on my tuition bill. thank you all so very much.

and check back in this thread for my next fundraising effort, t-shirts reading: "caveat emptor: i put a lesbian of color through law school and all i got was this lousy t-shirt."

thanks again kittens!
