ICE - In case of Emergency

Postby watty » Mon Aug 08, 2005 7:36 am

In the aftermath of the London bombings, a campaign is spreading around the world to get people to store an ICE - In case of Emergency entry on their cellphone contact lists, so that if something happens, the paramedics/ police/ hospital will know immediately who to contact.

Not trying to be morose, but if *fingers crossed* I get involved in an accident and for some reason I can't tell people who to contact, they can go straight to "I" and retrieve the ICE entry on my cellphone and not have to guess who amongst the 100s of contacts is the correct one.

You can put in more than one ICE, I have two: ICE - mum and ICE - gf. It only takes a few minutes, and it helps people who may be trying to help me. Please tell all your friends and relatives about this simple, but wonderful, idea.

I think im just going to let them figure out that 'mum & dad' would be a good number to call. although if im blowed up i guess my phone might be dead also.

My brother-in-law and I saw this on the news the other day.. we thought it was a really good idea so they did it... They've each got a billion numbers programed on their phones so this would probably come in handy 'just in case'...

Later all,

This is a good idea..

idon'tlikejam, some people don't want "mum & dad" called... especially if one of them would just fall to pieces from an emergency phone call... they might do better if someone they knew broke the news to them... or sent them to the hospital.

Also, maybe "mum & dad" aren't the best people to make emergency medical decision... & someone else has been designated as having what the US calls "Medical Power of Attorney" The person who knows what the injured person wants as to medical care &/or life & death decisions.

Also, there is someone that I would like to put down as ICE, but I don't want their partner to have ANY SAY in my medical care... I don't like their opinions & their attitude toward medicine... they think they are an expert... except that a "vocational certificate" isn't a "medical doctorate diploma & license."

Sometimes I wish I could still put my ex down as my ICE ... darn it.

Hello Kittens-

While bombings get the news ICE is a very good thing for other things like:

Motor Vehicle Accidents
Peds (pedestrian) vs auto
Stroke, and in summer heat stroke. For winter there's hypothermia.
Medication failure (any diabetic or heart worried Kittens take note)
Sudden violence, like standing between a pregnant woman and the bathroom
Hitting moose in a Mini
Jogging off the steep trail in a heavy fog.

In short anything that means you can't talk to the Trauma Team or ER folks makes ICE darn useful.

BTW- Helmets, seatbelts and common sense are useful too.

Okay, getting of my soapbox. We now return you your regular Kitten doings

hey skittles, its cool i know not everyone wants their parents to be the first port of call in an emergency but for me i would like them to know first if anything happened to me and i trust their judgement.

tis a good idea though especially if i had a partner or didnt get along with my parents or something.

I think the reason the emergency services suggest using ICE is so that 1) they are clear on the wishes of the individual and 2) they don't need to look through M or Mum, D for Dad, S for Sis, G for Gran, H for Home ... or any other possibilities.

well there are 648 of them (one for each personality) so chances are one of them could be having sensible thoughts.

I think this is a good idea. I hadn't ever heard of ICE, but I just entered it into my cell phonebook. I put down my partner, and than in case she's unavailable (like in case we get into a car wreck together), my mother. Thanks for the tip, watty.

Right now it seems the idea is mostly in the UK, but slowly spreading around the world, my company's security dept sent out an announcement to all global employees. So far I've read articles on msnbc, washington post, cbs news, of course that's on top of the widespread coverage in the UK.

I've got my dad in there as ICE - dad 1, my mom, ICE - mom 2, and my sister, ICE - sis 3. Hopefully they'll get that means call dad, if he's unavailable, call mom, if she's unavailable, call Shannon. If not, oh well.

It's a good idea, saving time and all that.
