The Food and Drink Thread

Postby BytrSuite » Sun Jul 20, 2003 1:34 am

Almost everyone loves food, hell they even have networks devoted to it, so I thought this would be a nice thread to have.

You can post recipes, favorite foods, not so favorite foods and all kinds of good things like that.

I love pizza, will eat almost any kind. Store brand with some crushed red pepper is really good.

Been eating a lot of ice cream lately, it's a nice comfort food and cools ya down when the weather is all hot and stuff.

Mashed potatoes and gravy. Mmm.

Damn, I love food.

Hee, and Guinness is my alcoholic drink of choice at the moment. Good stuff.

I am in love with reuben sammiches. There's a NY Deli close to where I live and they make the best turkey pastrami I've ever had, with mountains of swiss cheese, sauercraut (did I spell that wrong?), and enough Thousand Island to make an absolute mess. Sometimes, I will stick potato chips in the sammich....it's an oral orgasm. If I really want to experience nirvana, I counteract all those calories with a 3 shot espresso...not that I have an addiction problem to caffeine.

At this moment, I have in front of me one of my favorite repasts: toasted, bite-size slices of crusty bread (in this case, Italian), bite-size slices of ham, bite-size slices of cheese (in this case, sharp cheddar), and slices of Granny Smith apples. I'm in hog heaven! :angel (as it were)

GG Add to that an iced mocha, and I'm a happy lazy Sunday-afternoon camper :grin Out

Smoked eel.

Oh yes, I kid you not. Before I was born my grandfather had a fish smoking factory (mostly eel) and my father had to work there since he was 8 years old. I remember when he smoked eel for us. It was the best I ever tasted. Yum. I never tasted it quite as good since, but smoked eel is still one of my favourite treats.

At the other end of the spectrum I think I've found the worst drink in the free world. One of the guys at work drinks "Clamato" all the time - especially in the morning. For the uninitiated its a mixture of tomato and clam juice! It should be illegal (and probably is somewhere).

Well now I'm hungry.

I personally love Mexican food. Lately I've had a thing for chicken chimichongas. With a side order of refried beans and a glass of that sweet rice-milk, which name I can't remember at this time. My abuela would be so disappointed...

On the flip side, I have to agree with you there, MadeinNZ. Clamato is absolutely horrifying. I like tomato juice, and I like fried clams. So, I thought, this might be good. Boy, was I wrong. I couldn't swallow the stuff. My body rejected it almost immediately. Barely made it to the kitchen sink.

Another not so wonderful food -- my mother's tuna-broccoli casserole. But that could be a personal thing.

Postby bulldog tidnab » Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:57 pm

about Clamato....

i have never in my life sat down to drink a glass of tomato juice and thought to myself, "you know what this could use? this could really use some fish."

i mean, i'm just terrified that someday i'll catch one of my roommates drinking something like "mango trout"

Isn't there beef and tomtato juice also?

Favorite foods...

being a vegan, I've had to subsitute a lot of my favorite foods. I used to be a huge steak and potato eater, but now I've made the switch since my body started rejecting such said foods.

Current fave's:

potato salad from how it all vegan cookbook

grilled vegan cheese and tomato dipped in ketchup ( used to hate ketchup, now I love it, odd huh )

veggie sushi, like cucumber rolls, avacado etc.

cheeseless poppa johns veggie pizza.

vegan spinach dip ( I have fooled the meat eaters with this one)

fave drinks

margarita's.

amaretto stone sour

hard lemonade

hard cider

glogg

merlot

oj straight up

tomato juice ( hold the clam) on the rocks with lime.

I love all kinds of things. Right now, I'm particularly in love with tater tots. I love tofu and sprouts and hummus and all that veggie stuff. I love cheesy poofs and corn chips. I love sweet tea, especially Milo's. I love chocolate and peanut butter. Oooh, and onions. I wish onions were in (almost) everything. And cheese.

The weirdest thing I love is probably kefir. It's one of those things you either love or think is evil. It's basically fermented milk. It's got yeast and bacteria and it tastes like yogurt. Almost everyone thinks it's the most disgusting thing they've ever heard of, especially when they find out more about how it's made. But...it's good. I love it. It's good on granola.

I love, love, love Indian food. Besides just plain loving it, I always appreciate the usually excellent selection of vegetarian stuff.

So this is kinda a food and drink thing. . .

I'm going to visit my girl soon, and since she's all about the working and I'm all about the sitting around her house all day, I'm thinking of making her a nice anniversary dinner.

I've got it all worked out, I have transportation to the store to buy whatever I want, but I have no idea what to make her.

I can cook pretty well, but I've just been drawing a complete blank for the past couple of weeks as to what would be nice and fancyish. And vegetarian.

Do any of you folks have good suggestions, maybe good internet recipes?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks. (lopsided grin comme :tara )

Ok, so my honey was staying up too late the other night watching Emeril Live on the Evil Channel, aka The Food Network. She doesn't really care for Emeril, but the show was about mushrooms and she loves mushrooms.

So, she cons me into making this one recipe for her, that she had been lusting after since the show. Since she won at the casino today, she got to pop for the ingredients.

So dinner tonight was Baked Mushrooms Stuffed with Crabmeat Imperial.

Well officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

I am so weird when it comes to food. I am very picky. I like things plain, like if I go to McDonalds, and I order a cheeseburger, it must be plain. And if there is any pickle or ketchup or anything like that, it goes back.

If I’m eating something with a sauce and it has onions or peppers or mushrooms or anything else like that in it, I’ll pick at it until it’s all “clean”, then I’ll eat it :lol

I like the breading on onion rings, but not the onion part.

I love pepperoni pizza, but nothing else on it, just pepperoni. I also love lasagna, love it to death :love

And I love poutines. Most of the ones I’ve tried are good, but there’s a small restaurant in town called Burt’s Pizza that makes the best poutine I’ve ever had :heart

Although I do like hot dogs and baloney when they’re fried, I prefer eating them cold. And oh yeah, let’s not forget, Vienna sausages :lol

I love food.

I love making food. Especially baked goods.

All food is fine by me. I'll try anything once.

Though I am a vegetarian, I do eat fish and I'll sometimes eat meat if it's free-range or bred in nice good organic conditions.

I also like trying unusual foods. I think my list of unusual foods includes: horse, buffalo, alligator, snake, dog, snails and frogs (some people consider those unusual, others don't), donkey, rabbit and lamb (see snails and frogs) ...

I love Cuban sandwiches: pork, ham, salami, white cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban bread. I was reading my local newspaper today, and there was an article about a new Cuban sandwich place near where I live. With the exception of Cafe Felix in Orange, California, I've only been able to find good Cuban sandwiches in Florida. (Columbia Restaurant makes the best, IMO.) So, here's hoping that the new, local restaurant knows how to make them, and knows how to stay in business. 'Cause I hate having to fly from LA all the way to Sarasota or Ybor City just for a sandwich.:)

It'll be the train, Walter, just the way you want it. Straight down the line.

Ah yes, the Cuban sandwiches. I grew up with those. Amazing, aren't they.

There's also a nifty little dish called Arroz con Pollo. It's my absolute favorite, and can be made vegetarian. But I suppose one would have to change the name. It's not fancy or anything, but it definitely is tasty. If you like cumin. There's always cumin in Cuban food.

I'll have to get the recipe from my mother the next time I talk to her. I'll definitely post it for those who are feeling adventurous.

Hmm. . . I could make her paella. Especially if I'm feeling lazy. It'd also be easy, considering that I'm lazy and get this kickass paella mix that comes in a box. Then I wouldn't have to worry about not being able to find something in a crazy store in Cincinnati. r0x0r. And thank you for mentioning the arroz con pollo. This one would be arroz con verduras, if anything.

I was never one for sandwiches or meat, but I was always down for a good shrimp po'boy while I was in New Orleans.

BBQ Shrimp

You will need, 1lb precooked, thawed shrimp. Sesame seed oil. Soy sauce. A whole lemon. Bell peppers,1 red and 1 green. 1 sweet onion. 1 clove peeled and minced garlic. Ground black pepper. Spray can of olive oil.

Fire up the grill, allow grill to preheat at least 20 minutes. Make sure you have lightly sprayed the grill with olive oil; this will prevent food from sticking as much.

Marinade:

¼ cup Sesame Seed Oil

¼ cup Soy Sauce

1 tsp minced garlic

Black pepper

Mix all the above items in a bowl, add black pepper to taste.

Set aside

Slice bell peppers and onion in sections large enough to fit a skewer.

Skewer shrimp, peppers, and onion.

Spray all items lightly w/olive oil.

Slice lemon in half.

Ok, now you are ready to cook. Place shrimp and vegetables on grill, place lemon cut side up on grill. Cook lemon until it is warm throughout (this process will make the lemon sweeter) liberally squeeze lemon over shrimp while cooking. Baste all items at least twice with your marinade. As the shrimp are precooked your cook time for them is greatly reduced. Remove from grill when your vegetables are tender.

Serve with a tossed green salad with a light dressing.

Serves approximately 2.

For the vegans, shrimp may be substituted with tofu. Make sure however, that you have oiled the grill well to prevent sticking, I recommend only turning the tofu once during cooking.

*Tip of the day; if you don’t have a wire brush to clean that grill, loosely ball up some tin foil.

Next episode; BBQ Chicken Pizza

Ok everyone, thats it. If you like the idea let me know and i will continue it, if you have your own recipes to share, well, get to sharing.
