Girls Rock! The Women of Rock thread

Postby WebWarlock » Wed Nov 19, 2003 8:29 pm

Ok here's the deal. I have an obscene amount of CDs, tapes, and actual albums. I love music and a lot of my music groups has been lead by women. While the rest of my friends were lusty after actresses (the term supermodel had not been coined yet) I was lusting after Joan Jett or Stevie Nicks.

So who rocks your world? ;)

Here are some of my favs.

Stevie Nicks

Gods how can I describe my teenage lust for her. She was blond, sexy, had a voice that could knock you out. I still get chills to hear her dusky warble on "Stand Back". I have worn out copies of Stevie Nicks tapes and dedicated my first book on witches to the "Welsh Witch".

Listen to some old Fleetwood Mac (like "Bare Trees"), then pick up a copy of "Rumours". My god there is change so profound. Sure, a lot of that has to do with Lindsy Buckingham as well, but really, can you imaging anyone else singing "Dreams" or "Rhiannon"? Or pick up her solo works, my personal faves "Bella Donna" and "Wild at Heart".

Enya

Ah, my cousin! ;) No really, we have the same last name.

I picked up a copy of "Enya" (now known as "The Celts") and "Watermark" back in 1989. Wow. I was blown away. This woman sang with such a passion that something in it called out to me. I don't know what it was, but something in me was changed. My wife (then only my best friend) would listen to her all night and day. When we later got married we had to have an Enya song on our wedding video.

I listened to "A Day without Rain" over and over when I first came to the Kitten board.

Lorena Mckennitt

Another celtic gal. Lorena voice is haunting where Enya's is etheral. Lorena is a Canadian, but you would think her heart and soul live in Eire. I never get tired of her album "The Visit". In fact I can listen to "All Souls Night" over and over again. For some reason it always reminds me of our girls. I credit it for the creation of the characters of Liath and Bodhmal (or rather my retelling of these mytho-historic figures) for my RPG work. Her most famous song is probably "The Mummers' Dance" which was featured in "Harry's Game". She has not released any albums since 1999 and nothing new since 1997. And the reasons are very sad. I respect that choice, but the selfish part of me wants more music.

Sinéad O'Connor

If Enya is etheral and Lorena, haunting, then Sinéad's is a banshee wail of raw fury and emotion. Yes I know she has been controversial and maybe she is a little more than a little crazy, but I can't help it, I think she is fantastic. My wife and I must have listened to "The Lion and The Cobra" over 5,000 times in college. No joke. That album is someone's pain laid bare. She could not be more exposed if she had posed for the cover naked. If her albums are like that, her live show is even more so.

I have been to many concerts. I was in the 8th row of the Who, I saw the Stones, I jumped up on stage with Faith No More once. Nothing was ever like Sinéad O'Connor in concert. I had just seen Lilith Fair the week before and Sinéad blew me away. I am going out on a limb here, but I would vote her "Troy" as one of the best songs ever.

Ok, that is enough for now. More later.

So who do you love? Next time I'll fawn over my complete effection for the tough girls of Rock. The Joan Jetts, Lita Fords and L7s of my life.

My list, the ones I can think of for now. You can tell I'm a youngun'. But.

Joan Jett

Of course. Joan Jett was my first big musical crush - my father had her self titled record and I loved it - Little Drummer Boy remains one of my favorites. I saw Joan live a couple of years ago, as I mentioned somewhere and. . . So much wow. I was in a place where I could see and it kept seeming like she was making eye contact with me and wow. My favorite album is probably Fetish, because I'm a kinky little bugger, and my favorite song is Baby Blue, which was co-written by Kathleen Hanna.

Le Tigre

And anything written by Kathleen Hanna is good. Le Tigre is fun and dancey, Bikini Kill is hardcore. The "tigre" in the title is a link to my Le Tigre site, that's how much I obsess. Le Tigre's great live, so so energetic and spirited. I was introduced to them when Tribe 8 opened for them once. I've obsessed ever since.

Tribe 8

Tribe 8 might be my favorite dyke band ever. Their albums helped me get through so much. When I saw them at the Le Tigre show they came down into the crowd to dance I told them how much they had saved me and Lynn Breedlove kissed me. I'm still stunned by that. She danced with us the rest of the night. The song and album that have resonated the most you can listen to here here (if you have IE).

Melissa York is not a band in herself, but she's drummed for The Butchies and Team Dresch (ten points for both of them) and is fabulously amazing. She also recently appeared on the new Bitch and Animal album, and is definately my biggest girlcrush.

A+ for music.

Sweetie, I'm a fag. I been there. - Tara (Dead Things shooting script)

A muscle cramp? in your. . . pants? - Tara (Older & Far Away)

I can scramble an egg, I won't eat it but I can scramble it. - Amber

I'll throw my two cents in

Poe

Didn't care much for her first album one way or the other, but her second, Haunted is a masterpiece in my mind. Beautiful vocals and very evocative lyrics, too.

Madreblu

Italian folk/pop/somethingorother. Virtually unheard of on this side of the planet. Song "Certamente" was featured in an episode of the Sopranos. Doesn't matter that I don't understand more than a handful of words in Italian, it's still a beautiful body of work. Rafaella DeStefano's voice is sublime.

Tori Amos

Second favourite pop/folk singer of all time. Can't pick a favourite album, they're all good. If you can, catch her duet with Trent Reznor on "Past the Mission".

I'll throw in a shameless plug for Leonard Cohen, as his song "The Partisan" inspired my own screen name. He might not be able to sing worth a damn, but his lyrics are too beautiful for words.

MELISSA FERRICK -

I have one word for you......"DRIVE"

What a yummy song!

INDIGO GIRLS -

They absolutely rock live. Worth every single penny I have ever spent to see them. Love their live album, 1200....

JENNIFER NETTLES -

Big on the Atlanta club scene. She has an absolutely fantastic voice....her song writing skills are out of this world....and has an incredible stage presence.

SARAH McLACHLAN

Fabulous......her songs make me swoon.

Then I, of course, love the already mentioned Melissa Etheridge, Enya and Stevie Nicks.

Oh wow! I could go on and on...and on some more about women in music I'm crazy about but I'll try to keep it relatively short.

Ok, so after an edit to add more folks this is in no way short.

Tori Amos

I fully believe that no one can go to a Tori Amos concert and not leave mesmerized by her sheer talent, beauty and passion. She's toned it down a bit over the years but the first time I saw her straddle a piano bench and play a piano with her right hand and a keyboard with her left, the only thing I could think was, "I'd give my life to be that bench for two seconds." Her writing style is very stream of conscience so a lot of times its easy to get lost in her references but they've become very personal to me because they take on whatever meaning I give them.

Ani Difranco

The most prolific singer-songwriter alive today. She's another performer you must see live to fully grasp her power. She works the crowd like no one I've ever seen. I own all of her cds and I've never been disappointed in an album. I can't even think of a song of hers I don't like. She's simply amazing.

Madonna

One of the very few pop artists I fully respect. The woman gets better and better with every album. She's been in the game so long and walks a fine line between edgy innovation and pop for the masses. Absolutely gorgeous and sexy and talented to boot.

PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey is rock and roll incarnate. I don't believe there is any other way to sum her up so completely. When I think of true rock no other woman compares.

Karen O. of the yeah yeah yeahs

I only recently stumbled upon the yeah yeah yeahs but I haven't seen this promising a band since The White Stripes. Her vocals go from a sweet sigh to a feral growl within half a second. I can't wait to hear more from this band. I only hope they can handle the pressure heaped upon them by the indie press to be the next great band. Too many promising bands and artists simply haven't had the staying power or compromise their musical integrity to get a big hit.

Chrissie Hynde of the The Pretenders

The original template for a kick ass rock chick. I’ve never cared much for The Pretenders first big hit, ‘Brass in Pocket’, but the rest of this bands catalogue is stellar. Chrissie radiates cool, you can’t not love her.

Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple’s two albums to date are regulars in my cd players. She reminds me of a more coherent less eccentric Tori Amos. Most of her songs are about love lost and who can’t relate to that? When she released her first album she was a mere 19 years old but writes and sings like an old soul. ‘Slow Like Honey’ is one of my five very favorite songs of all time.

Shelby Lynne

Finally someone from my part of the world! Mobile, Alabama is not known for producing music acts. As a matter of fact, due to a scandal involving what was once the largest music venue in Mobile, well-known music acts avoid this town like the plague. Shelby Lynne is a friend of a friend of mine and I couldn’t be happier for her success. Her album, ‘I Am Shelby Lynne’ is where she waved goodbye to her country beginnings and the sound she created is phenomenal. Her husky, soulful voice is hypnotic and the songs she writes feel more genuine than anyone else on the scene.

Poe

I have to agree with a previous poster who basically said her first album was wholly under whelming. Her second album, ‘Haunted’, however is innovative beyond words. Unfortunately she was dropped from her label after the ‘Haunted’ album failed sales-wise. Her vocals are deeper than you might expect, it’s nice to be able to sing along and not have to raise my voice an octave to be in tune. A former model, Poe is absolutely beautiful and a true talent. I can’t wait for a new album so I really hope she gets picked up by a new label some time soon (if she hasn’t already that is).

Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox is soul, rock, and pop and has what I believe to be the most beautiful voice in the industry. With The Eurythmics she released some of the best pop music I’ve ever heard in my life. ‘Missionary Man’ makes me move every time I hear the first measures of the song. With her trademark androgyny she frightened, intrigued and let’s face it, turned on a world that wasn’t used to seeing a classically beautiful woman in semi-drag. Bless her for that.

Etta James

There will never be another woman like Etta James. She was the original diva in my opinion. Her best-known song, ‘At Last’ is one of the most recognizable songs ever. Her voice is beautiful and her attitude, legendary.

Gwen Stefani of No Doubt

Gwen Stefani is on my list more for fun than anything. She is the ‘it’ girl of the moment. You can’t go a day without seeing her in music and more so, fashion. I think in ten years she’s going to have a Madonna-esque quality about her. She’s not exactly the most talented singer but her presence draws you in. She’s truly beautiful, that is, when she’s not wearing so much make up. The first time I saw the ‘Blow Ya Mind’ video with Eve I thought she must have stolen the look entirely from a drag queen friend of mine.

Me'Shell N'Degeocello

I just love her. I see her and I smile. I hear her voice and I swoon. I hear her play bass and I… well that’s a bit personal. Let’s just say that women who excel at musical instruments affect me in a deep way…like the way a push up bra on my girlfriend affects me. Ok, now that I’ve shared way too much information I’ll just say that I also really respect her for being out as bisexual in a time that it wasn’t as accepted in the entertainment industry.

Lucinda Williams

She’s my single pick from the country genre. She’s more alt-country than anything. Lucinda Williams has an unusual voice that grows on you after awhile. Her song ‘Essence’ is one of the sexiest songs I’ve ever heard and I can’t hear it enough times. I’ve listened to her albums, ‘Car Wheels on a Gravel Road’ and ‘Essence’ more times than I can count and I never tire of them.

Jonatha Brooke

Buy her albums, please! ‘10 cent wings’ and ‘Steady Pull’ are stunning. There’s not a bad song on them. Jonatha Brooke is one of those artists that you are proud to know of before they blow up. The first time I heard her song ‘Linger’ on the radio I literally jumped and down shouting. This wouldn’t have been so odd but I was working at a drugstore at the time listening to headphones while putting up stock. I got more funny looks from elderly customers than I care to admit. It was worth it.

Jesus Christ, this is the longest post I've ever had here. The others I have to mention but for the sanity of anyone reading this I won't list the reasons why:

Debbie Harry (Blondie), Alanis Morrisette, Stevie Nicks, Natalie Merchant, Aimme Mann, Beth Orton and Meg White (the White Stripes)

I was loving the descriptions of why we like these bands. . . I think that's a huge part of it all - a band may be great, we may have heard of them fifty times, but somebody else's joy for them can really make it worth it.

Kimya Dawson

Kimya did the Moldy Peaches, that's why you would've heard of her prolly. . . She's really neat and she went to my college and is really sweet to all of the kids who adore her. I haven't seen her live cos she generally is on the east coast, but to get to do so would be one of my favorite things ever.

Catie Curtis Her voice is just beautiful, and her lyrics so powerful. I bought her album "My Shirt Looks Good On You" just because I thought the name was awsome and instantly fell in love when I heard her song "dont lay down". Beautiful.

Who were you then? And who are you now? That you think you can figure it all out, the mathematics of regret. It takes two beers to remember now, and five more to forget. That I love you so..what. Yeah I love you so..what.

Woman who rock. Very good thread!

Well, i will not repeat those that have already been mentioned. I agree with Webwarlock, on a few of his choices.

I am partial to;

Carrie Akre:

Local Seattle girl who used to front Goodness and Hammerbox. She is pretty mellow now.(although I love the old stuff too.)

Susan Tedeschi:

I love most of her songs, but Rock Me Right is one of my favs.

Mary Chapin Carpenter:

I hear the groans, yes this is my country music pick!!

Any song, any album. She is the Master.:bow

These are in my non rock and roll group.

i will post a differant list next time, after i narrow it down. Be sure Heart will be somewhere on it.:D

Ah yes, I could not have said it better myself. She is at the top of my list. Not a lot of solo artists manage to reach the top and stay there for 20 years.

I've also got a definite soft spot for Mel C, she has a very distinct and powerful voice and Northern Star is one of my favourite albums. One of the few that isn't a "best of" where I like every single song. Anyway a list of the rest of my top favourites in no particular order:

Shania Twain

Shakira

Christina Aguilera

Here are some of my favourite woman in the music business:

Norah Jones

You can only love her songs. So nice to swing along with, a very cool singer, soft and powerful voice.

Heather Nova

I swear, I've listened to four of her albums and each stands for itself and has its own style, own music, own poetry. She always surprises. Plus a very cool voice, too :p

Sarah Bettens

One of my fav singers. Her voice just kicks ass. I also love that she manages to "rock" as much as... "ballad" lol

Just wanted to mention them, too :p

Also I defintely have to agree with Michelle Branch, Madonna and Mel C :bounce

Shirley Manson (of Garbage) - I've been a fan of Garbage since their first CD. Shirley is an incredible singer, brings such excitement and vitality to both studio tracks and live shows. She's quite intelligent and articulate, and funny as hell. And, since I'm a sucker for accents...the Scottish brogue...Yay!

Brodie Dalle (formerly Armstrong...of the Distillers) - She's got that rough, yet melodic voice that goes perfect with the guitar-driven punk of the Distillers. I saw them live with Garbage and No Doubt last year, having never heard of them, and just from the energy of the live show, I became a fan. Absolutely great.

I am now methodically checking out all the names listed here I didn't know before. I have to say, so far I'm rather impressed with The White Stripes. Usually I don't see the point of name dropping, but seeing how I'm curious as to artists that kittens like, I'll just go ahead and throw in my 2 cents.

Alanis Morissette

The best lyricist out there. Her words have an impact on the soul that is second to none. Her best albums are her earliest ones, the famous "Jagged Little Pill", and slightly less famous "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie". And just like the title, the lyrics need some good strong chewing before they go down the right way. She has a dumbfounding vocal ability to boot, complicated and beautiful tunes, and whatnot. Her only weakness is her tendency to work with 20-something guitarists and drummers, who don't have half her skill in performance, her variety or uniqueness.

My beginner's recommendation:

1. Ironic. Yeah, you heard it back in 1996 and you LOVED it. Admit it! Now go back and listen to it again.

2. That I Would Be Good is a track of pure beauty that just never got enough air time.

3. Sympathetic Character is some hardcore, hard rockin' Alanis at her best. It's haunting.

Natalie Merchant

Her power is simply in her voice. She has a very deep, very rich Alto. Her lyrics are simple, and so is her music; I regard her more as a storyteller than a usual singer. But dear lord, I cannot possibly tell you how strong and warm and enchanting her voice is.

My 3 top:

1. Ophelia

2. Wonder

3. River

I won't go on about Sinead O'Connor and Tori Amos, though. Sinead is my Goddess, the only singer I really, truly worship, my only. I can only recommend:

1. Troy. Probably one of the best songs ever made. Notice I didn't say 'rock songs' or 'alternative music'. I meant all songs, ever.

2. Just Like You Said It Would Be is one of her earlier, most exposing and bewildering songs.

3. The Foggy Dew is a traditional Irish song. Her delivery is heartbreakingly honest and pure. And very powerful.

Tori is just insane. As in crazy. Nuts. Mentally ill. Psycho. A total maniac. Gone bananas. Not right in the head.

I'd say:

1. Raspberry Swirl

2. Winter

3. Silent All These Years

All for reasons I couldn't possibly explain.

Thank you bytrsuite for your moddy kindness

Women of Rock?

As cattwoman98111 said, that's gotta have Heart. Ann and Nancy! Ann and Nancy! I crushed on Ann Wilson so hard when I was a teenager, I cried a lot. :lol I seriously thought Heart was the only thing keeping me alive. No lie. So I flamed with joy when I finally got to see them a while back. First time ever. They were awesome. That woman can sing. God. I could cry again.

I was deeply into Sinéad O'Connor for some time. When I finally got to see her live, I was pretty disappointed. I wanted raging, angsty, Pope-tearing Sinéad. I got mellow mommy Sinéad. Since then, I've come to believe she's quite insane, but I do still listen to The Lion And The Cobra. Those songs are fucking brilliant.

Joan Jett. Of course I love her! I remember my little gay self being soooo intrigued by her cover of "Crimson and Clover." :lol I love her cover of that Mary Tyler Moore show theme song, too. Plus, hot as hell. Hot. As. Hell! She can throw me down and fuck me senseless any day.

Shonen Knife. They remind me of The Ramones. They're that same kind of melodic poppy punk. And with songs about Tortoise Brand Pot Cleaners and riding on bicycles and collecting insects, I cannot not love them. They just finished touring here in the States and, of course, came nowhere near me. :cry

I like L7 a whole lot. But I only have Bricks Are Heavy and Hungry For Stink. "Wargasm" is once again very topical, unfortunately.

Andrea Echeverri (Aterciopelados). Wow. I understand probably about 10% of what she's saying, but I fell in love with her voice pretty much the second I heard it. The things she can do with it. Amazing. It was enough to make me know I had to learn Spanish. Seriously.

Since we're stretching genres here already with the inclusion of people like Mary-Chapin Carpenter and such, I'll happily frolic away from the rock.

Dolly Parton. :heart I have loved Dolly since I was little, I love her immensely now, and I will go to my grave loving her. She is a genius songwriter and...she's just Good People, you know? Oh, before I forget - I. Love. Her. Yes, I've been to Dollywood. :shy

Missy Elliott. I love the way she blends old school and new school and ends up with something that's sometimes better than both. I love that she puts her money where her mouth is. She's passionate and serious about a lot of issues I care about. Ooooh, and This Is Not A Test! is out in a few days! Yay!

Michelle Shocked. I've loved her since I first heard "Anchorage" in high school. Short Sharp Shocked had just come out, I got it, and, unlike quite a lot of the music I loved at that age, this music is timeless. So is Captain Swing, even though the music could hardly be more different. Deep Natural has been out a while now and it's different, too, of course. I saw her live several years ago and it remains one of the best live shows I have ever been to. I do love me some Ani, but I seriously think Michelle could show her a thing or two.

i got a dance ain't got no steps  /  i'm gonna let the music move me around

Cool, I love it when a thread takes off! ;)

Ok a few comments on people mentioned.

Tori Amos - love her! She has got attitude to spare and damn can she sing. I need to complete my collection of her stuff, but if you can get a copy of her version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Joan Jett - This chick rocks! I remember seeing the "I love Rock n Roll" video for the first time and having a reall Beavis and Butt head moment (mind you this was 10 years before B&B). "What's she want that dude for. He's a dork." "Yeah, she could like kick his ass and steal his guitar!"

Dolly Parton - what's not to love, she has a great voice, can play classical guitar and also has a sass about her. "I Will Always Love You" still has to be one of the most haunting and sad love songs out there. And she wrote it (about Cole Porter) when she was really young.

Sinéad O'Connor - further proof that Troy is the best damn song ever. Maudmac I am sorry you didn't get a good live performance, when she was good no one was better.

Shania Twain - I am not much into country music but I do like some of her songs and lets face it, she's hot. Shallow of me? Yes.

Jewel - my wife is more into her than I am, but we have all her albums 'cept the latest one. I do like her first one though.

Madonna - maybe the only on this list who I like even though I don't care too much for her music. Nothing against her, she is talented as all hell. Sometimes her controversy seems a bit manufactured, almost like we have become accustomed to being shocked every time she says something because she is Madonna, but you can't argue with her business saavy.

PJ Harvey - now here is a rocker. She has this Annie Lenox meets Lou Reed meets Mick Jagger thing for me.

Debbie Harry - Blondie was one of my favorite bands from the 70's (along with Fleetwood Mac). She disappeared for a while and now is back and touring. If she had stayed in the game she would be the biggest female performer alive today.

Me'Shell N'Degeocello - loved her duet with John Mellancamp, but beyond that she is one of the two best female bass players on the planet. (The other down below).

Carrie Akre - great voice! I have her (with Goodness) singing the old School House Rock song "Electricity"!

New.

Sean Yseult aka "Devil Doll" aka "Shauna Reynolds"

The former bassist of "White Zombie" and the front woman of the all female goth-surf-rock band "Famous Monsters". She also is part of "Rock City Morgue". Yeah this is a weird chick.

Pick up a copy of White Zombie's "La Sexorcisto : Devil Music, Volume 1". First just look at the cover. Yeah that little girl is the one driving the intense bass. Listen to "Thunder Kiss '65", the signature bass line in that is all her. You forget the lead guitar is even there listening to her bass. BTW the woman's voice on "Thunder Kiss" is not Sean, but sampled from "Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!"

This is great, more later.

Re: Girls Rock! The Women of Rock thread

ahhh, Maudmac. Makes my little Heart sing with all the talk of the girls. Which is a perfect lead into a funny little story about obsession. Many, many moons ago my best friend and i were so enamored with Ann and Nancy. Well lets just say it was bad, anyway when we were in college we were studying Forestry Technology our coursework for the week was planting and regeneration of forests we had to go out and replant a clear-cut. We somehow ended up with these Hickory axe handles that had come off of broken axes, we decided to carve the girls names into these and referred to them by name for a considerable amount of time after.

*sigh* I just found "Nancy" in storage a few weeks ago. I plan on surprising someone by leaving it on her doorstep.

Just a little taste of the dork that was me in college! Not that much has changed :)

7 Year Bitch

No longer an active band. Viva Zapata, a tribute to the late Mia Zapata remains their best known work. Inspired by Seattle punk band the Gits and their fiery vocalist Mia Zapata, 7 Year Bitch is one of the most aggressive punk bands on the American indie scene.

The Gits

Mia Zapata, she was a goddess on the mike. Nuf said.

i took this bit out of a news artical, The brutal 1993 rape and murder of Gits lead-vocalist Mia Zapata served as a catalyst for expressions of grief and then concrete positive action on the Seattle music scene. Zapata's musician friends channeled their anger and anguish into the formation of Home Alive -- a non-profit collective promoting creative approaches to ending violence.

I know this should be a "happy" thread, but i felt in necessary to remember. This crime was never solved.

Hammerbox

Ever heard “Rain”? You should.

Well that wraps up my Tribute to Seattle.

I want it. Give it to me. I love it. 7-Year Bitch

Madonna. Hands down, no contest. I've seen her live a couple of times and it was always a thrill. She may not be the strongest vocalist of all times but personality/stage-wise she outdoes them all -and it's about time she hits the European stages again....

Another absolute fave female singer of mine is Dusty Springfield, sadly no longer among us. She had an incredible voice, very soulful. Wish I'd seen her live, but, alas, the cd's will have to do.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. ...

I have so many favourites so this could take a while...

Brody Armstrong (of The Distillers) is one of my all time favourite women in rock. She's an amazing guitarist and has such a raw quality to her singing. And she has to have some of the best quotes of all time, when asked how she felt to be a female rock star she replied 'well, I don't play the guitar with my vagina, so who cares!' :lol

Michelle Branch: Began my obsession with singer/songwriters, I still need to her hold of her very first album though.

Ani Defranco: I've only just begun listening to her stuff but I haven't found anything I don't like yet!

Pink: For some reason I feel compelled to add her. I think it's because she seems so different compared to a lot of the people who are around in the more mainstream area. Plus she super funny!

aswell as: tori amos, lisa loeb, amy lee, norah jones, alison krauss, indigo girls...and too many more :D

* * * * * * * * *

A pretty girl happy in an ugly world, watching all the pretty people doing lots of ugly things...

Cool thread !...although I'm not totally sure it's good to segregate people etc. Anyhow, it's hard to pick out a few - I've tried to go for women who went for a good deal of originality .......I can feel those grey hairs sprouting !!!!

Kim Deal / Kristin Hersh / Patti Smith / P.J. Harvey / Bjork /

Kim Gordon / Siouxsie Sioux / The Slits / Poly Styrene / Fay Fife / Cindy Wilson & Kate Pierson / Babes In Toyland / Debbie Harry / Tina Weymouth / Courtney Love / Beth Orton / Tracey Thorn / Margaret Fiedler....that will do for now....I just know I've missed out somebody really important !!!! :peace

Here are my fav.

Ani Difranco:

I love this little folk singer! There really are no words to describe what she does. She is awesome. I just went to her concert in Long Beach last month. She writes all of her own songs.

Dar Williams:

She is another independent artists who Ani actually toured with. She has a beautiful voice and personality alike. She writes all her songs too.

Bitch and Animal:

They are a couple of Lesbian singers on Ani Difranco's record label, Righteous Babe Records. They are hilarious and love to push the envelope.

Anyone who knows me will realize that I could fill up a page on this thread all by myself without even trying. But I'll show some restraint. There are lots of people already mentioned who I love and have seen play many times, like the legendary Joan Jett (who I first saw in the Runaways) or the wonderful Ani Difranco (first seen when she was still doing a two person band thing with Andy). I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen a mention of Sleater-Kinney, a remarkable band who have been at the top of my list of favorites for years.

And I really am at risk of going on forever here, so...I'll pick a couple that really fit the criterion here, women of rock, with particular emphasis on that word rock. Or, sadly, rocked.

BIANCA HALSTEAD- better known by her stage name, Bianca Butthole, first came to my attention as the bassplayer and occasional singer (or more often, shouter) in a very rude, very loud punk band called Butt Trumpet. She went on to form her own band with some of the other women from BT and called it Betty Blowtorch. They were even louder than L7 at their peak, and that people is LOUD. They were just starting to get some serious attention after releasing a cd and endless bouts of touring, when Bianca was killed in a car accident in December 2001. A posthumous cd called Last Call (Foodchain) shows how much was lost with her untimely passing, and includes a demo version of her best song with Butt Trumpet, I've Been So Mad Lately.

MIA ZAPATA - She was the lead singer and lyricist with a good band called the Gits from Seattle. They put out a few singles and a cd in the early 90's and were also just on their way to some real success when Mia was murdered in 1993. (Her killer was finally caught this year with the use of DNA evidence.) Mia had a powerful voice and stage presence and was one of those people who you know are giving you everything on stage, not to entertain you but to share their soul with you. Her remaining bandmates have done her proud over the years by getting back the rights to all their music and issuing it in remastered and expanded versions, I can recommend all of them but for me their best song was Second Skin and it's on a couple of the cd's, I'd start with them.

And, to avoid closing on a sad note I'll throw in a few newer faves and see if anyone knows them: Riff Randells, Quails, Dressy Bessy, the Organ and M.A.S.S.

Start with playing." - Alexei Panshin, The Thurb Revolution

Nice topic! :D

I Love Rock, specially when women do it, hee, I join the ones who Love ALANIS MORISSETTE'S music and Lyrics, I'm a huge fan! Ever since i first heard 'Ironic' on the Radio i tried to get all the info of her i could, and here i am still Loving everything she does.

I like as well AMY LEE (Evanescence), she has an incredible voice and i like her (well, hers and the co-writer's) lyrics as well.

Finally TARJA TURUNEN (Nightwish), god, her voice! I could cry. :heart

And well, That would be all i think :)

Linda Ronstadt - She has so much talent…dabbling in so many genres…rock, country, pop and big band. But she totally blew my mind when I heard her interpret traditional Mexican folk songs I grew up listening to. When I’m feeling nostalgic, “Canciones de Mi Padre” (My Father’s Songs) is one of my favorites, it rocks, but on a different level. :lol

Pat Benatar - Dear Lord what pipes! Love her early stuff.! I think she helped open doors for many young women with big rock and roll dreams. Plus, she sorta made that short pixie haircut cool! :laugh

Other favs in no particular order: Chrissie Hydne, Janis Joplin, Ann & Nancy Wilson, Agnetha Fältskog & Frida Lyngstad, Patti Smith, Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Betty Blowtorch, L7, Luna Chicks, the Runaways, Shangri-Las, Madonna, the Go-Go’s, the Donnas, Exene Cervanka, Kim Deal, Justine Frischmann, Siouxie Sioux, Bjork, Gwen Stefani, Courtney Love, Mary Wells, Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn.

Edited to add Tina Turner! Jeez, how could I forget Tina? :punch

:sigh Ok, maybe I shouldn't be so snappish. It's probably just frustration over how most of the musicians I like are butt-ugly. I mean, have you seen the Chieftains?

*kicks self* lol, I just realized that me commenting on amy lee's hottness made it seem like I only like her cuz she's pretty..so not the case. I heard Evanescence's music first and fell in love with it..amy's voice is amazing, and their whole album just kicks some serious ass...it's one of the few albums I have found where every time I listen to it, I find something new that I love about it. I saw pictures of her after because I got really into the band. I for one agree with you that just because an artist is pretty does not mean that they make quality music. Not bashing any britney fans however,..props to her for getting as far as she has...ask me enough and I might even admit to liking some of her stuff. :wink
