Lately, the new albums by Aimee Mann, Sleater-Kinney, and Patricia Barber (astounding jazz pianist and vocalist, so smart and cool and a lesbian--I think I've talked her up here before).

I have been in a major Clash mood all summer.

When online I often listen to stuff I normally wouldn't elsewhere, e.g. Chemical Brothers and DJ Shadow.

And right now? A perennial favorite, Jeff Buckley. I must have listened to "Eternal Life" a thousand times last May.

Oh! And the new Sonic Youth, "Murray Street." Dear God, that's a great album.

I don't like them either. I mean, I love the idea of them. Just don't want to listen to their music. Fortunately, I won't lose my lesbian membership card anytime, due to my poor taste in clothes. And that whole kissing girls thing.

Ooh, Nightwish ! Bliss. Bought their new album Century Child recently: beautiful. Bought a CD of the Indigo Girls before I even knew they were lesbians (just heard them on the Lillith Fair CD: great source for singer-songwriters) Don't know their songs by heart, like I do Sarah McLachlan's (bought the Bryan Adams' "Spirit" soundtrack (music by Hans Zimmer !) just for his duet with Sarah) but it's relaxing to listen to. I'm such a sucker when it comes to music.

I'm with you on this one, Ruth. I've never much liked them. In fact, the only time I was overtly edited when I freelanced for Curve Mag (piece of shit) a few years ago was when I reviewed one of IG's records...and had the nerve to give my honest opinion. Apparently, I missed the memo that said, "Thou shalt not openly criticize the Indigo Girls in any lesbian publication." Oooops.

It's not.

Playlist

Postby Elianna » Sat Sep 28, 2002 12:11 am

1) whatever they're playing on the radio station as I'm driving to school. Usually alternative rock unless some song that my mother objects to comes on the air, and we're back to news.

2) Jazz from the swing era cd

3) Billie Holiday - a collection.

4) Ella/Louis sing Cole Porter cd.

5) Pippin (Some great lines, including my signature, and "I believe if I refuse to grow old, I can stay young 'til I die", a great motto)

6) The Weavers, I've practically worn out the track of "Goodnight Irene".

I own about fifty other cds, but at least 30 are lost in my room somewhere.

Popularity Suck

Postby LiangFeng » Sat Sep 28, 2002 1:12 am

Actually I just dumped a whole lot of my CDs right out the window. Figuratively of course. A good number of my favorite bands have hit it so hard that it's so freaking popular at my school. So naturally I dumped them immediately. I'm not the kind of person to "go with the flow" and excuse me for saying this but I consider following the trends really stupid. So not wanting to look stupid I gave away hella lot of my CDs.

-Jimmy Eat World

-Linkin Park (These guys were around for HELLA long)

-Good Charolette(Even longer)

-Alien Ant Farm

-Drowning Pool

And I would also like to add that I too dislike Indigo Girls. Sorry but it doesn't exactly suit me. Can I keep my lesbo street cred?

I would really appreciate it... if you don't do that again. -- Liu Jiuan, "Kiss of the Dragon"

I'm gonna stand up and be counted as part of the 'not to keen on the Indigo Girls' group.

I saw them do Closer to Fine at Glasto '95 whilst sitting on barrels next to the radio 1, teepee. We only went there to have a good stare at Jo Whiley & me friend got asked about how much she liked the indigo girls, she had to lie as we had never heard of them!

well there goes my lesbo street cred, or did I lose it at the mention of kylie?

Everything is better with music!

Postby slowontheuptake » Sat Sep 28, 2002 3:27 am

My musical tastes are a little scitzo so here is a cross section.

Tool-Lateralus. I don't care how much anyone hates metal (this is not metal) everyone should have this cd. Pure brilliance.

Juno Reactor-Bible of Dreams. Crank it or keep it in the background. Ambiant Tecno?

India Arie. beautiful.

Portishead-Dummy. It goes in and out of personal favor. If you like Coldplay you might dig this.

Last of the Mohicans sountrack. Will never go out of favor.

Sublime-Sublime. Alt punk? For crankin and singin along. Thier only kickass album. The singer died of a heroin O.D. shortly after the CD release.

Bjork-Debut and Post. I am Bjork's bitch. She may be completly loony but she is brilliant. Two of the best CDs ever.

Simon and Garfunkle-Bridge Over Troubled Water. There are moods when only S&G will suffice. Exept no substitutes.

I think I'll stop now...

I really enjoyed Century Child too, although my favourite album is still Oceanborn. :) I swear I haven't found *any* music by them I didn't like and I have heard all the albums and viewed the DVD. And Tarja has the voice of an angel. :drool

Right now I'm listening to a loop of all the song from "Huit Femmes" ("Eight Women"). The French is great since I get more work done if I can't sing along :D That and it's really a beautiful language for songs.

And can anyone tell me what "A pile ou face" means?

/chuckle/ Hey Mara ! /waves/ Yeah... Metal (not talking about "new metal" now, although that music can be fun too to freak out on the dancefloor, mind you) 's highly underrated most of the time, but it's definitely out there ! It's true, Tarja sings like a siren, has a classic opera voice. Dunno if the rumours or true and she's taking a year of to study, but I do know they were playing in Belgium recently. Really badly wanted to go, but I still had reexaminations :( Ah well, I'll get my chance one day, I hope. Gonna go to Sinergy (one of their former band members Marco plays for Nightwish now) on 16th of November (Kimberly, their lead singer's a big Xena fan :) ) Anyway, you're right: Oceanborn's beautiful. Cover alone makes me swoon, but Wishmaster, Angels fall first, Over the hills and far away are pretty wicked too. :)

Ah, Nightwish.

I'm quite happy that I saw them live at the Summer Breeze Festival five weeks ago.

I've been at IIRC 5 Nightwish-gigs so far, but that was definetly the first time that I saw Tarja headbanging...

Another Nightwish fan here, I think they just get better with every album. I've heard too that they will take a break from the band next year, Tarja is studying church singing or something somewhere in Germany.

Saw them this past summer at Tuska festival, Tarja was headbanging and wearing tight, black leather pants :)

Well, my tastes are very eclectic, so I'll just listen to some of the CDs I've listened to in the last few days

Natalie MacMaster: Live in Concert. She's a great fiddle player from Cape Breton, NS

Jerry Joseph: 7/21/02. A live CD from an audience recording.

Cowboy Junkies: The Trinity Sessions

Grateful Dead: Terrapin Station

Widespread Panic: A live CD from one of my audience recordings, 6/28/02

Tim O'Brien: The Crossing

Bothy Band: Live at the BBC

Fairport Convention: Leige and Lief

Other stuff I've listened to in the last week includes Tori Amos (the goddess!!), Emmylou Harris, Kristen Hersh, Led Zeppelin, Martin Hayes (fiddle player extraordinaire!), Norman Blake and Phish.

The wonderful invention that is Kazaa has allowed me to find music I'd been searching for for years in the shops.

Finally, I am able to revisit my Sultans of Ping FC phase.

It's great to have such classics as Give Him a Ball and a Yard of Grass ( "A man can have no greater love than give 90 minutes to his friends"), Where's Me Jumper? ( "It's alright to say things can only get better, you haven't lost your brand new sweater") and Let's Go Shopping ( "Put on your flip flops and let's go shopping, dear") back in my life.

Lyrical geniuses them boys. ;)

I've also been listening to some Billie Holliday, IG, Gemma Hayes and Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. :)
