Jen

it depends on what kinda file is it. with the extensions of .mpg, . avi, .mpe, usually it would be that you need additional codecs. cos it could be one of many new file types. if a divx player don't work. Try other codecs like xvid. run the file with WMP and see what is the error message shown. if it doesn't tell you what's wrong... then ... hehehe... try codecs.nm.ru/

I hope i did help... even if i didn't that link is pretty helpful to me when i can't play my files. :p

This site avicodec.duby.info/ has a program called avicodec that can tell you what codecs you need to play a file.

hey jen, i had a similar problem with a movie as well, it ended up being a codec that i needed, there is a simple free program out there called (no joke) the gspot. if you go to the forums on the divx website they have a direct link to it. they also have answers to almost any problem you can have, however some of the links are dead. the gspot program is simple you open the file, it scans it and tells you what it was converted to, it will also tell you if you have the proper codec to play it on your system. it is a neat little invention. if it turns out you cannot find the website email me and i will winzip it and send it to you.

Catt_Woman@hotmail.com

ps. just for info never download a large bundle of codec, that in itself can create a huge problem and overwhelm your system.

anyway i hope this helps, any ?'s drop me a line.

So my laptop shuts itself off randomly.

I've come to the conclusion that it's overheating, but it seems like it. . . Shouldn't. . . Overheat. Is this because it's on my bed (which absorbs heat) rather than on a table of some sort?

When it shuts down it loses all of my stuff, which makes me worry for paper writing next year. If it happens then, it'd be something like only with a laptop. . .

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Right now it's living on top of my cordless phone and the end of a book (Angela's Ashes, I'm not exactly sure why I'm reading it again) so that there can be airflow underneath.

Is this normal? Should I feel this attraction to other women? (Erm, yeah. Ignore that last bit.)

My first suggestion is to make sure that the auto save feature on whatever word processor you're using is turned on, so if your computer does crash at an inoportune moment then you won't lose too much.

If the computer is over heating I'd suggest that you check the fans are working okay. Just using it on a bed shouldn't cause the computer to shut down.

So the best cause of action might be to get the laptop checked out, either by sending it back to the manufacturer or taking it to your local hardware shop.

Autosave of course, but it's usually image manipulation and web coding that I get screwed over on. Notepad's not so great for it's autosave. (:

This started in the Aly pics thread :stink but now it's where it belongs.

Some people said that IE is effective. If by effective they mean making you very vulnerable to hackers, then they're absolutely right.

The reason I use Mozilla/Firebird, is that it's just a better browser. It's faster, works better, looks better, and just does tons of stuff that IE doesn't. But one of the biggest reason I don't use IE and will never use IE again as my default browser is this.

As you can see, as of right now, IE has 22 security holes, 22!!!

That's unbelievable, and makes using the Swiss Cheese of browsers a no-go.

OTOH if you go to bugzilla and search for the word security, it lists 313 bugs that are still open with 9 of them being classified as being critical.

Though I'm certain if that Microsoft had a similar bug listing that they made public there'd be a lot more than 22 security holes listed, and probably more than 313.

justin, that's a good point, proving that NO browser is perfectly secure, that just doesn't exist. But Mozilla/Firebird is much more secure than IE.

And if MS did have a public bug listing like bugzilla, I completely agree with you, there would be a lot more than what Mozilla has, no doubt about that.

Well... I use Firebird as my default browser, I like it. I like to play with the themes and rearrange my toolbars. And I would like to download winamp skins with it, but I have to go back to IE to do that. Hopefully, that'll be worked on and fixed soon. I think Firebird is a good browser... but it still has a ways to go before it's as effective as IE.

As for the security issue, aren't you still at the same vulnerability to hackers not using IE but still having a Windows OS? If people were really worried about hackers and security they'd use an operating system that wasn't by Microsoft. :)

That's very true Kasey, using Mozilla on any Windows machine still doesn't solve any of the OS problems MS has.

And as for the Winamp problem, MozillaZine is having a discussion about that right now, here.

Thank god for this thread.

Ok, my computer, for some reason, says that I dont have a D or E drive, it says something about my IDE secondary controller has been disabled or something.

I was looking at my cd player which is my D drive and my cd burner is my E drive, I thought well if it says I dont even have either drives, I'm just gonna unplug the wires for a second, while my computer was off, of course, and then plug them back in, so I did. Then I turned my computer back on and everything was fine.

Everytime I hafta restart or something it goes away again. The wires in the back where I unplugged it says something about IDE input, do I need new wires or a whole new cd player and burner? Or is it something else? It's probably something thats so simple and I'm too stupid to figure it out haha.

If someone can help me with that, I'll worship you forever.

Sheena: Maybe I can help you with your problem. Do you know if one of the players have been set as MASTER or as SLAVE device otherwise they won't work.

At the back of your player, next to your IDE Interface Connector there are a set of pins. You'll see a little plastic jumper. You'll set one jumper on the Master pins (cd player) and you'll set the other jumper on the Slave pins (cd burner). I hope this was helpful.

Since a lot of people here use Mozilla I thought you'd be interested to know that AOL are no longer going support the development of Mozilla. Also they're not going to release any new versions of the Netscape browser.

However it's not all bad news as AOL have donated 2 million dollars to the newly formed Mozilla foundation who will oversee future development of Mozilla. Also other companys such as Red hat and Sun Microsystems are donating money. So I don't think that Mozilla will disapear any time soon. For one thing even if the Mozilla foundation does collapse the source code will still be freely available so people will still be able to work on it.

In a semi related note I've been trying out the Thunderbird mail client lately and I've been very impressed. The best thing is the built in Spam checker which is both a lot quicker and more accurate than Spam Assassin, which is what I was using before.

The only downside is that it's hard to resist shouting "Thunderbirds are go." every time I send an email :sigh

On the subject of browsers, I've always preferred Netscape and if AOL won't support it that's fine by me as i wouldn't touch AOL if they offered it to me for nothing!. Being a Mac addict, I've just downloaded the new Apple browser Safari, not too sure about it yet, but am gonna give it a go, will let you know how it goes.

That was seriously messed up. I reset everything, and now I can't insert code from the html editor. Whatever. It's probably a bug with Firebird. (Yeah, I'm FINALLY using it, but only at work. ;) )

Okay I admit it - I'm pretty inept when it comes with techy stuff and my techy partner is too busy to deal with this so here is my question.

Has anyone set up a WiFi network with a PC Desk Top and An Apple Power Book using an Airport Extreme router, and a DSL modem? And if you have, how did it go. From what I've read it should work and there shouldn't be a problem, but I thought I'd check here before I jumped in. This is the first Apple I've owned in many years and I'm still trying to figure out all the compatibility issues if we set up a wireless network.

Thanks,

Amy

I'm not a mac person, but I have some geek friends who are. I was just talking to someone who networked a pc and mac, and said that what you really have to watch out for is to turn off ******alk, and to make it a p2p network. He also said that Panther makes it a lot easier to network mac to pc. Hope that helps.

For some reason, ezboard thinks that A-p-p-l-e is a bad word. Funny.

That's interesting pat because we don't have profanity filters enabled. ******alk test. .hmm It's not apple that's blocked it's a-p-p-l-e-t-alk

anyway, i don't have airport but I have a lynksis wireless router/cable modem with 3 xp machines and one mac osx. I have 3 computers networked. They are all networked together just fine. Also I am able to print from my mac to my printer hooked up to the xp, that was a bit harder to set up.

maybe when EZboards sees the word a-p-p-l-e-t it thinks that you're trying to embed a java program within your message, which is probably disallowed since it could be a virus or some form of spy ware

I read about a similar thing a couple of years back with yahoo. They were filtering mail which came from / to xxx@yahoo.com addresses to try and prevent ppl sending a-p-p-l-e-t-s and viruses in their e-mails. Ppl complained that words were changed in their e-mails!

I think stuff like m-o-c-h-a and m-e-d-i e-v-a-l (or anything with e-v-a-l) got changed; anything that was a java keyword or whatever. Lets try! :)
