Hi
I didn't realise this thread existed until this morning. This is great.
A schoolteacher friend of mine has had her class develop input forms for the incoming Year 7 students to enter their interests and some personal info, and now she wants to actually use one and gather the data into a database. I'm a programmer with limited experience in web sites trying to build up my knowledge, plus I want to help her - it's fun. (I worked for a large government org. where you only get to do one aspect of development - it's much more interesting, but challenging, to have to handle everything from development to uploading to the web server.)
Soooo, I've started checking out sites for a CGI script/s I can modify or mush together to suit my purpose, and now I'm curious: is there a default language for CGI, eg PHP, that will run on any server? The school pays an external provider for network stuff, but a lot of work is done by staff who've taught themselves just as much as they've needed to know to get the job done, (I think good teachers are worth their weight in gold) so not a lot of help available there. I'm not even sure yet whether the program is to run on a server belonging to the school or an external web host server - my friend is trying to find out for me.
Also, any recommendations for good sites for explaining CGI scripting would be appreciated.
TIA
Anne
