I'm going to sneak in a recommendation here for Going Driftless:An Artist's Tribute To Greg Brown (Red House Records). The cd features Lucinda Williams, Ani Difranco, Gillian Welch, Shawn Colvin, Victoria Williams, Iris Dement, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ferron and others doing covers of songs by Greg Brown. I'd never heard of him before, but the cd shows he's written some fine songs and inspired many of these artists. Some of these recordings are among the best that these women have done recently, and all of them are good. Plus royalties from the cd are going to The Breast Cancer Fund (http://www.breastcancerfund.org for info.) The songs by Lucinda and Vic Williams, and by Ani and Shawn make it an essential purchase for me anyway. Check it out.

As for Tatu, they are pretty well irresistable. So I stopped trying.

seurat I heard about that cd at the Lucy Kaplansky (who is also on it) concert I was at. Was much intrigued by it - all those great singers on the one album. I think I need this!

Hi Mollygig- yes, Lucy is on it and her track is excellent. I'll have to look into getting one of her cd's too. I'm sure you'll like this cd, even though Indigo Girls aren't on it. Nothing's perfect,:wink If you have trouble finding it near you, it is available on Amazon, and Red House has their own website where you can order it, http://www.redhouserecords.com. And again, all royalties of the label, songwriter and performers go to the Breast Cancer Fund. Cheers!

Postby raspberryhat » Sat Jan 04, 2003 3:39 pm

Hi,

Sarah McLachlan is very good. My favourites are Possession, Fear, Sweet Surrendor and Angel. I can never decide if I like the Remixed album versions better than the original. Surfacing and Mirrorball are both great albums.

Creep is a great song. I heard a story (not sure if it's true) that the electric power chords in the middle was an accident that turned out to be massively populer. I understand the original version was fully acoustic and their guitarist just decided to liven things up one day. Hmm. Sounds improbably now I write it down. But yeah, it's a cool song.

If memory serves, Amber quotes Jeff Buckley as a fave from her appearance on VH1 The List .

Oh Gemma Hayes, I got her album Night on my Side for christmas. Let a good thing go is my favourite track.

On the subject of christmas presents, I got Daybreaker by Beth Orton which is also a very good album.

Plus Creep by Radiohead is an awesome track eps. the acoustic version, which is the version they played when I saw them play live years ago, I think it was '95.

As I appear to have made a whole post in this thread without mentioning any cheery pop Girls Aloud Rule!

Well I totally adore this German popgroup called Wonderwall.

It's three girls singing cheesy, ubercatchy songs.

Cool songs are:

- Sexy Girl

- Dear Lifetime

- I'm Just More

- In April

- Together Again

- Bubblin'

- Who Am I?

Yay - other Gemma Hayes fans! :grin

There are some good b-sides and unreleased tracks available to download of hers, as well as the Night on My Side tracks - if you happen to catch sight of them I heartily recommend 4:35am and Evening sun - very mellow, very cool :cool

One recent good buy I had was the 28 days later original score - very atmospheric and moody, and if you're into film scores well worth a listen - 'in a heartbeat' being one outstanding track in particular :D

Hehehe, and if you want a good 'jump up and down, be happy and not give a toss' song guaranteed to drive your work colleagues insane with your incessant playing - locate 'Too much too soon' by Llama , the one saving grace of the godawful 'Swimfan' movie - oh yeah, that and Erika Christiansen ;)

Love and chaos,

I bought that Tatu CD on Saturday and I'm suprised to say I like all of the songs. Granted, they're all sort of cheesy, but everyone needs a little cheese in their lives. LOL.

Other recent purchases:

Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

The Streets - Original Pirate Material

Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane

Phantom Planet - The Guest

Ride - OX4: The Best of Ride

Linkin Park - Reanimator

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way

Live - Throwing Copper

Jimmy Eat World - Jimmy Eat World

Frou Frou - Details

All kick ass CDs, especially the Flaming Lips.

My playlist is currently spinnng between:

The Whitlams, Eternal nightcap. - Old but I just love it.

Doves, Last Broadcast

Muse, Origin of symmetry, - cause to me its a classic

Crash Test Dummies, God shuffled his feet. - Dug it out and can't stop playing it now

The Coral - just fabulously funky

Reality Bites soundtrack

My current musical obsessions include:

THC—Adagio. This is the group that played Veruca’s band Shy in the fourth season episodes “Beer Bad” and “Wild at Heart.” The clips used in the episodes don’t even begin to do them justice. The music is lush, atmospheric, haunting, and dark. Lead vocalist Sarah Folkman has a voice strongly like Annie Lennox, only more smoky and brooding. You can listen to some samples at amazon.com, although the CD is most easily found at George Sarah’s web site, dungeonkids.com. I picked up this disk almost on a lark over a year ago, and it’s still in steady rotation in my diskman.

If you try Adagio and like it, you might also enjoy Opus 11, which George Sarah did with a variety of lyricists/ vocalists. And of course, there’s his terrific collaboration with Anthony Stewart Head, Music for Elevators, which has also seen hours of play. :grin

In a similar vein, the Aussie trio Single Gun Theory produced two excellent CDs, Like Stars in my Hands (1991) and Flow, River of my Soul (1994). The lead vocalist is another woman with a beautiful, haunting voice, and the group’s lyrics are just terrific. The music is lush synth-pop with a variety of world-music flourishes. You can check out samples at amazon.com.

Kane, the country-rock band of former Angel baddie Christian Kane (Lindsey), has also produced a terrific CD, titled Kane. I’m normally not a big fan of country, but their music has strong rock influences—it’s just infectious, and of course Christian’s voice is beautiful. I hope to hear more from this band in the future. You can buy the CD at cdstreet.com.

No Kitten’s music collection would be complete without Melanie Doane’s wonderfully warm and funny Adam’s Rib, which features “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” the W/T “floating dance” song from “Family.” It’s amazing how my CD collection has expanded thanks to watching Buffy and Angel:lol

Another unusual and wonderful CD is The Long Walk Home, Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence. If you liked Passion, his soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ, you’ll probably like this also.

A really fun soundtrack is the one to the movie Anywhere But Here, which features a variety of female artists, including k.d. lang, Poe, and Sinead Lohan.

In classical music, my current fave is Rimsky-Korsakov, especially the Russian Easter Overture. When I’m reading Return of the King, this is the music I like to play when Aragorn is crowned—especially the last minute or so.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Okay, I usually don't buy many cds but with my Christmas money I have purchased the following:

Thinking back on my childhood I bought these:

The Rolling Stones - 40 Licks

The Beatles - The Beatles 1

Fleetwood Mac - The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac

Elvis - Elvis 30 #1 Hits

And "newer" artists:

PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (she is so cool)

Live - Throwing Copper

Jo Dee Messina - I'm Alright (for some reason Country is taking over my current playlist)

Throwing Copper...such an awesome CD. In fact, after talking to you about it awhile ago...I went out and bought it again. Such an idiot for selling it 5 years ago. Oy.

As for country taking over your playlist...nothing wrong with that. Jo Dee Messina is pretty good (although she's becoming more like Faith Hill with each new release...pop pop and more pop). My favourite song of hers has to be "Heads Carolina, Tails California" from her first CD, with "Bye Bye" (from I'm Alright) a close second.

Beck

Postby slowontheuptake » Mon Jan 13, 2003 12:41 am

Beck, "Sea Change" has been in constant rotation in my cd player for the past two weeks so I thought I would come here and give much love.

It's absolutly breathtaking. It's a melodic, downbeat entrancing sort of lost time thing where you zone through a song because it just captures you.:shock

This is a must have. Trust me. Seriously. :love

Don't let the name Beck throw you off. The man continues to evolve and this is not "Creep." Not even close. (Not knocking "Creep" which I liked)

Hey all!

I couldn't resist posting about Alizée : she's a young French singer and (for those who know her) Mylène Farmer's protegee :evil (<- MF is not evil, I just love this emoticon)

Anyway, she's releasing her new single in England : www.moi-alizee.com/teaser_uk.html

What can I say? I love it, it's so 1980's! :grin

Chère compatriote, :wave

Funny you should mention Alizée because I was at a my work's Xmas party last December and this woman runs towards me, going "OMG, I love Alizée!" and I was like... "Ummm, who's that??" (I watched the "Victoires de la Musique" and I didn't know half of the performers, but that's another story... ;) )

So then, she proceeded to go up to the DJ, gave him the single (dunno WHERE she got it...) and asked him to play it.

Which he did. And this woman (whose name was Christine too, BTW :) ) started dancing and "singing" in the middle of the dancefloor. Which I had to admire because she was totally drunk and still knew the words, though she usually can't speak a word of French to save her life... :grin

So, Alizée, huh?

Personally going to see Avril Lavigne next week. Will never live it down with my friends but hey... They're going to see Westlife :rolleyes
