SEATTLE - When it comes to web browsers, Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the unquestioned king, but it's not your only choice.



A number of competitors offer browsers that are easier to use and work just as well, with less risk of a hacker attack.



For its February issue, PCWorld magazine tested Internet Explorer and its strongest competitors. The editors gave top honors to the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox for its "fast, simple and secure approach to the web."



PCWorld's Dennis O'Reilly says Firefox is the first new browser built from the ground up. "They really took a different approach,” he says. “They wanted to keep it streamlined, nice and simple, just the components you need to browse the web."



Firefox offers a neat feature you won’t find on Internet Explorer— tabbed web browsing. If you have more than one open, each page can get a separate tab at the top of the Firefox browser. No need to go between web pages by clicking on the launch task bar. I’ve tried it and it’s really nice.



The bottom line: While Internet Explorer rated 3 out of 5 stars, PC World gave Firefox 4 and a half stars.



PC World says Firefox is less likely to be attacked by hackers than Internet Explorer. When there is a problem, O’Reilly says, you’re more likely to get a patch very quickly. That’s because Firefox is an open-source program.



"With IE you have to rely on Microsoft to provide the fix and they do so at their own sweet time,” O’Reilly says. “With Firefox, since it's sort of a public project, everybody's always working on it, trying to find the holes and patch them just about the same time, so you could get updates in a matter of days."

Some people have said they like firefox for it's customisability. In which case you might be interested in K Meleon Which is another browser based on the Gecko layout engine which is supposedly faster and even more customisable and faster than Firefox.



It does have the following disadvantages:



1: It's windows only and the developers aren't intending to move it to other platforms



2: It probably doesn't have as many extensions available as Firefox (Though that's just guessing)



3: The developers have released it under the Gnu General Public License



Normally this would be a good thing but in this case it means that while it's possible for K Meleon's developers to take code from Mozilla or Firefox and to put it in K Meleon it isn't possible for developers from the Mozilla foundation to take code from K Meleon and add that to Mozilla or Firefox. While this is their perogative, it doesn't seem to be entirely sporting (at least IMHO)

I can't bring myself to use IE unless I absolutely have to. Firefox to me has so many advantages, the tabbed browsing, search as you type, not to mention the extensions. The latest firefox extension I'm having fun with is one that has a database of smilies for inserting into forums.

I so agree with not using IE if I don't have too... But it stinks because for me to do work, from home, I have to use IE because of the websites don't find FF (Firefox) as a supported web browser. Anyhoo, FF just loads and reloads a whole lot faster and is a lot more stable in every aspect. It's funny when Mozilla comes out with updates for FF, it's never to fix a problem with the browser, but to make it more secure. Gotta love it!!! Okay, I think I have babbled enough for today. =)

Hey Foxfire fans, can anyone help me solve a problem??



Last night I hopped on the FF bandwagon - this morning, my computer has forced me to hop right back off. After installing FF and the attendant plug-ins and extension, every time I (now) load the FF browser on my compuer, I get a Windows OD blue screen of death error, generally followed by a Windows Fatal OE blue screen of death error. I'm running Window 98SE still (short version - XP doesn't support the older software I have.)



After I installed everything and got it running, things seemed to be going smoothly (I love the tabed browsing feature!!). However, soon after I encountered a few problems. The first was my monitor going blank (as in black) and when it came back on FF had shut down. Now, anytime I try and load the browers, from a desktop short cut, mega crash!!!



Any suggestions??? And muchly thanks

Quick question, what extensions have you installed??? Because I'm wondering if it is after you install FF (itself) it starts giving you problems or if it's after you start installing some of the extensions... Let me know and keep us posted. =)

Hey, thanks for responding,



After I loaded FF, I added the plug-ins for Media player, Java, Quick Time, flash player Adobe etc - pretty much just the basics. These were the suggested one on the FF downloads page. I didn't start using the program until after I'd added the plug-ins and extensions. The extensions...Auto copy, dictionarySearch, Adblock (I think - should have written them down, I guess) Tabbrowser Preferences, Fox Cast. It was all set before I started using it.



FYI, I restarted the system after I installed - everything seemed to be running well, although it did take about 15-20 seconds for the program to load from the desktop short cut. The only thing I didn't do was select FF as my default browser. I have way too many ties in with how I surf to IE still. This make any difference?



I tried loading FF this morning and immediately got a blank screen fatal OD error.

okay Patches... I'm not sure if this the main problem you are having but there is a Windows Update KB891711 that could be the problem. I was at techguy.org's forum and saw that more people where having the same problem. I would suggest (as most of them do) is uninstall that Windows Update and see how stable your computer runs then... keep us posted... =)

Maybe if Mitchell were to do that Justin, then all that would be left would be for Bill to swim the Pacific once IE is standards compliant. So it's pretty safe to say Bill won't ever have to get wet

I forgot to mention that the CEO of Opera had promised to swim the atlantic if Opera 8.0 was downloaded 1 million times in four days. It was but he had to abandon the attempt when the raft he was swimming alongside sank and it turned out that his assistant couldn't swim. Ooopsie.

If anyone needs proof of how important Firefox is becoming then Mitchell Baker was recently named one of the 100 most influential people of 2005 by Time Magazine.

OOh that's awesome! GO Firefox. I try to convert as many people as possible. If anyone at work has a problem with the browser. I install Firefox and everyone is happy after the move. I recommend it to anyone who is half interested in software. Yay Firefox!

Firefox's popularity is starting to have an affect on IE. There was a story on SlashDot recently that Microsoft have finally gotten round to fixing IE's support for png graphics.

Maybe now there's a viable competitor to Microsoft they'll have to start competing based on things like features and performance.

Or maybe they'll just totally change the API in Longhorn so that Firefox won't run properly.

I can hear it now "Longhorn ain't done, till Firefox won't run."

Hmm, this started off as a post about how Firefox's popularity was a good thing even for non Firefox users, and somehow it turned into an anti Microsoft diatribe. Funny how that happens, isn't it?

Right-click on a typed word inside a web form on any webpage to get a suggested spelling for that word. Then select the word from the popup menu to change it. The words are obtained in real-time over the Internet using Yahoo!'s Spelling Suggestion service.

Note: Thanks to changes that the MoFo have made to their servers as long as you only have update.mozilla.org & addons.mozilla.org on your whitelist (Edit=>Preferences=>Web Features=>Allow Web sites to install software=>Allowed sites), which is the default value, then you should be safe from the exploit.

I've got one loaded on my browswer called BBCode. I use it a lot on forums. Everything you need to alter text and inserts pics and things copied are just a right click away.

I totally agree with you. I was so happy when the Air Force authorized the use of Firefox. The speed and the ability to customize to my liking makes work easier. Also, you think it's fast now? Wait til 2.0 final comes out. It's suppose to be night and day, from what I've read. =)

rmmlvm88, you need to be using the OLD yahoo mail, not the new version... the old one shouldn't make firefox crash... but using too many tabs will... or trying to close tabs...

I haven't had any problems with video downloader, nor with the new yahoo mail causing crashes.
There is another extension called Grease Monkey which you can use to get links to download YouTube stuff if you're still having problems.

Same here. Everytime they come out with a new update, I try to uninstall my current version, then install the newest one. I like the sense of a fresh install. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to uninstall the copy you have and reinstall a fresh copy. Everyone knows where your Firefox profile is, right?
