I thought I would add my 2 cents as a British university student.
I was totally freaked out when I started my uni search, when I settled on my final choice and got accepted, I spent the next few months trying to both come out to my folks and also prepare myself for possible evil people at university.
That wasn't the case, it seems British universities in general are very liberal, partly cos students can whoop some butt if they are discriminated against, I would say nearly all of the institutions have a LGBT society or organisation within them, I'm currently going for female representative for mine, and I feel that had there not been somewhere like that for me back in my first year (well the first time round lol) I would have felt a bit lost in my identity.
The society factor wasn't even the reason why I chose the university, in the end it was the course (though that's a bit redundant now lol) and the fact that I loved the city. The overall tolerance I felt about sexual orientation was just a plus.
Northumbria University rules!
