Dudes, where's the punk rock? Skates and guitars? C'mon, you guys remember Blink 182, right? And New Found Glory? Good Charlotte?

Well does anyone remember the old school stuff? Sid Vicious' Sex Pistols, The Clash, Wendy O' Williams...or what about skater music like Gangreen, the Circle Jerks, the Dead Milkmen and Dead Kennedys (long live Jello Biafra)?! And let's not forget humble Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Morrissey, Flock of Seagulls and all those other strange groups of the late 70s and 80s. God I feel like a fucking FOSSIL! :shock

I've been really getting into jazz and music like it lately. I've been listening to the Kissing Jessica Stein soundtrack, as well as Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Etta James. Oh, and I just became completely mesmerized by Norah Jones.

Yeah? A friend of mine saw him, probably in Athens, too. But this was years ago. All I remember is she said he was really late.

"Soup is Good Food" is one of my favorite songs of all time!

Anyone remember Lard? This was after his big fight with the rest of Dead Kennedys. "Hellfudge" is a great song. If you like that sort of thing.

Postby Kieli » Tue Oct 22, 2002 6:41 pm

Well it's good to see that I ain't the only old fart in the joint. *sigh* I really miss the days when Ozzy was considered Satan (I went to Catholic school, can't ya tell? ;) ) and I was into high hair bands like Arcangle, the Killer Dwarfs, Faster Pussycat and Poison! (jesus I can't believe I admitted to that).

I went through my skate rat phase too as well as the punk and goth phase. A black chick in all black doesn't look cool.....she just looks like an ink spot. I can make fun of myself now in retrospect. I was young and fashion challenged :lol

Postby Killin Joke » Wed Oct 23, 2002 9:19 am

Jenny Bomb: what a wicked title ! Thanks, seurat :) Oh, and the Q about Ani di Franco came from me too: Out of range, Revelling/Reckoning... /faithfully noted/

LOL, slowontheuptake Country isn't that bad actually. Granted: most of the time very depressing music, but not always (that's just a misunderstanding). I rented Lyle Lovett once, because Lucy Lawless likes him (yeah, I truly am a nut when it comes to fandom) Wasn't too shabby, once you get into the mood.

It's sad to say but I also rented a CD of Shania Twain once. That's not real country anymore, I guess, if you put beats under it. Ilse De Lange (Dutch singer) is cool, though. Country but a bit made popular. Haven't listened to the real old school country stars yet, however...

Tony, I was blessed to see The Cure once at Werchter: they could close the evening/night. Peculiar atmosphere. Loved it ! :)

P.S. Yeah, Avril's hot, but that's kinda stating the obvious, right ;)

Don't be silly. I'm not "dissing" anyone. My brother, Pookie, is still a skater (as well as a freestyle biker) and he's damned good at it. If Lance Mountain, Per Wellinder, Gonzalez, et. al, can still make money skating, more power to 'em. But I think I've broken enough bones in order to consider it my "phase". I ache in every place imaginable in winter so now that I've hit my 30s, it's time to do something less....umm...."dangerous"....my body hates me enough as it is. ;)

Joke: I have this sort of morbid fascination for "the Moz" and Robert Smith (I wish Robbo would lose the lipstick though...it's ghastly for his features)...they are my moody music.

Errr... not much call for Dropkick Murphies or Tori Amos then? Well, I always knew my taste in music was eccentric. Mildly put. And did I mention Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie? You've never heard of em? Err… maybe that’s just the voices in my head. They’ve been getting really creative lately.

I'm currently listening to the new Sinead O'Connor album. Its weird. She's taken a load of songs that are popular here in Ireland and given them her own twist. I mean, I like it because some of the songs are ones I learned in school (or pubs), but I'm not sure it would have an international appeal. Anyone else heard it yet?

/chuckle/, Tony. Yeah, The Cure are a blessing for black-loving freaks like us :) I don't care about make-up, or anything, as long as the music's cool :)

Tori rules ! She was in my walkman today. Yeah, I do own a 16 year old thing, that still works.

Fave song by Queen: Who wants to live forever (the whole Highlander-vibe, huh: makes me sad, thinking about W/T, though :(

The Offspring's "Self esteem" (?) was a great hit back in highschool. Wicked music.

K, might as well post this here. Has anyone ever seen the 'Zornik' videoclip "It's so unreal" (Belgian band) Well, it has two women making out in an elevator. Played by two Belgian actresses Pascal Bal and Anne Ceurvels (who plays Britt's new police partner on "Flikken": I miss her old one, Tony, though: they had so much chemistry going on :) ) Anne's bi, I think, but having a boyfriend right now. Anyway, they're both dressed in sexy bussiness women outfits: short skirts, blouses, vests, one's wearing glasses... and becoming aware of the other, swallowing, sighing... And then they turn and start kissing. Just a couple of short flashes, scenes, but there's tongue, licking, and one's mouth's slowly going down between a somewhat open blouse, as we see another shot from the male singer on his guitar, etc. The End.

Just thought I'd share. ;)

I posted a Tori experience over in Thursday's daily thread but, I figured I'd share here too. Anyway, I was saying how I got to see Tori's very first concert in this little theater in Maryland sometime after the commercial success of "Little Earthquakes"...I was sitting next to her father and it was surprising as all hell. Here was this guy still in his minister's collar just as proud as you please, rocking along to his daughter's stage presence like the rest of us devotees. I swear I was awestruck...I could barely breathe. There was maybe 200 people tops in this place somewhere near the Chesepeake and it was such an intimate setting. She was gracious and kind and just so giving to her audience.

So you Kittens going to see her in Vegas, you are in for a treat. She is tops!

LOL "It's all connected..." as Willow would say. As I'm typing this, they're showing Nirvana Unplugged on MTV. Just heard/saw Pennyroyal Tea. Heh.

Talking about REM's "It's the end of the world as we know it". Heard it for the very first time at this "summer" festival. Get this: it was the last day, REM was the closing act, and that song was the last one. It had been great weather all weekend. The sun was shining, no raining, till REM appeared. Man ! Thunder, lightning, rain streaming down out of bathtubs out of the sky. Bunch of crazy Dutchies in their underwear, eating icecream, covering themselves with plastic (rude one bumped to me, without apologizing, so evil me put my foot on the plastic, so they didn't have a roof for a while, he, he ) Anyway, what an experience: there I was, dressed like a black ninja, with my black raincoat/pants, happily dancing along, while my two male friends were obviously freezing their butts of, but staying with me out of dumb loyalty or something. The band was great. I think I actually saw Michael Stipe in tears, because he was so moved about it all :)

Live: saw them 3 times live, once when I didn't know them that well, the other 2 times at the same festival, since Pearl Jam couldn't make it: first time in the sun, second time in the rain: enjoyed both performances. Charismatic guy: preaches about peace, love and understanding a bit too much, but his songs are perfect to make music video's. Made a Xena one on "They stood up for love".

Savage Garden: I can't help myself but I like them. I mean: they're not really a boysband, so I guess it's allowed, huh. LOL ;) It's like Roxette: the songs are a bit commercial but they're just truly good hits :) Made another Xena music video on "Crash and burn".

The Corrs: Ah, bought 3 CDs for my parents, but I like 'm too. The whole Irish vibe, not to mention 3 gorguous sisters (and bro) who're extremely talented. "At your side"'s on my list for another music video: maybe for W/T... Think I have about enough eps now.

Woo and hoo ! Well, what do you know, another David Charvet fan ! Yeah, you got me: my one little indiscretion... I was gonna see him tonight at the TMF music awards, but I'm kinda ill /sniff/, so my sister's going in my place. /sigh/ Life can be sooo unfair sometimes. Don't wanna risk it: fever yesterday and cold, cold, cold, so cold... couldn't warm myself, untill I finally fell asleep, and then I felt hot like a stove... Grrr, hate it. Still not a 100%: can't risk fainting in such a big crowd. So I guess I gotta have faith, I'm gonna go to a concert, when he starts touring... They don't sing live at those awards anyway. Uch, there's always the tv, right. Gonna get myself a drink, some chips, cosy blanket, and I'm good to go (so to speak).

Well, since I couldn't be there to attend it live, I tortured myself by watching the TMF awards on tv... Always a sucker for punishment, huh.

But seeing Within Temptation (Dutch metal/rock/gothic band) collect the award for best international rock pleased me: saw them live twice, the female singer looks like a (dark) angel, with all her wide gorguous dresses, long dark hair,... and her voice sounds like one too. Really friendly bunch: crowd started singing happy birthday for one of the bandmembers.

AND Avril Lavigne won 2! awards for most promising act internationally, and best video internationally. She couldn't be there herself, but the cutie had made two video messages. She was really thankful, in her own cool way: nothing fake: just short, sweet and simple. She seemed a lil surprised to have one the vid award, especially since it was a first. She said she had fun making it.
