I used to be a huge Women's tennis fan. I am now still a fan. I still love watching the Grand Slams.



So this is the thread for any tennis talk. It's the French Open currently and we are in the third round.

I like watching tennis. I just need to remember when it's on.



My favorite player is Lindsay Davenport. She has been for a while now. I always liked her because she was bigger and taller than most everyone else, and yet still beat them.



Hopefully, she'll get her injuries healed and return to top form soon.

The french open live scoreboard has been open on my work computer all week. Ah well, if I can't be lounging at home watching the tennis, it's the next best thing.



Today's match Mauresmo -v- Serena Williams is sure to be a cracker. How I'd love to see it. Bon chance Amelie!

Serena won Shame these 2 had to meet in the quarters, I really like Serena too though. I just don't see anyone stopping her now.

I'd have to agree with that Serena comment, especially if she's on the top of her game.



I'm a big fan of Lidsay Davenport too, starting from around the time she won Wimbledon but she's been plagued by injury of late but hopefully she'll be back competing for the Wimbledon crown again after going out at RG.

I didn't see the Serena / Amelie match, but by all accounts Mauresmo was really nervous. Probably the pressure of playing in front of a home crowd got too much for her. Shame really as an on form Mauresmo would have been a competent rival for Serena.



Lindsay Davenport is my favourite player, probably because she had so many critics earlier in her career and managed to prove them wrong.



I'm also an admirer of little Justine Henin, she's a little battler of a player - never gives up easily.

I am really fond of Mauresmo and Serena Williams, though it gets boring to cheer for someone who always wins. I like pretty much everyone playing now, including Capriati and I didn't like her back in the day when she first started playing. I am just glad Hingis isn't anywhere near the top anymore :)

Well, there's one Belgian through, Kim Clijsters having beat the unseeded Russian 7-5 6-1.



Little Justine Henin is playing Serena Williams at the moment and is leading the first set 5-2.



Hmm, I'm wondering about the possibility of an all Belgian Final.

Justin Henin won against Serena Williams. I'm just so happy for her. . She just kick her ass with her racket.

I'm certainly gonna watch the finale between those two. Go Belgium! Go Belgium!

Excellent news about Justine Henin. I would have thought Serena Williams would have just squished her, but she's a real battler.

I read a story about Henin telling her mother in 1992 she would play in the French Open one day. A few years after that her mother died. It's so wonderful she got to fulfill that promise, and hey, Henin was a Steffi Graf fan, she's got my vote now. Unfortunately, I missed The French Open as I was in NY, but I am going to be following Wimbledon. They are airing a documentary about the history of Wimbledon on Dutch TV right now. It's fun to see the images of old. A few weeks ago I saw another great documentary about women's tennis, a big part of it focussed on Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. They both speak highly of each other and it is interesting to hear them talk about how their relationship went from good to not so good and back to good again when they were still playing, it's interesting to hear them talk about their thoughts and feeling during the matches and the psychology that is part of the game.

I haven't really watched tennis in the past couple years, but that's only cause I have NO time to whatsoever. However, I do have to say that my forever favorite player has to be Steffi Graf. She was just the greatest in the game for so long. That and I had a huge thing for her, yes early signs I know this....but hey its all good now. I do like Serena Williams just because she is such a battler when it comes to the court. I will definitely be watching the next time she plays.

My favorite all time was Gabriela Sabatini, sigh still have a crush on her. Steffi was awesome though, I loved watching her play. What an athlete!

This thread needs to be bumped because.....Wimbledon! My absolute favorite tennis tournament. One surprise defeat already: Hewitt is out. Hantuchova is somewhat struggling at the moment but I suspect/hope she'll pull through. Nothing spectacular yet happened in the women's draw. To my disappointment Mauresmo is a no-show but on the plus side: Navratilova is there again, in the Ladies' Doubles (ahem...where else... ) and I'm hoping the beeb will show some of that amidst of all the power tennis. As for predictions about the eventual winners: I really have no idea. Am leaning somewhat to Cleijsters. But that could be wishful thinking 'cause I like her style and I like her as a sports-person.

I love Wimbledon!



I started watching the Hewitt match late last night, and when he lost the second set, I could see he was struggling to maintain momentum, so I gave up and went to sleep (it was about 11.30pm by then in Australia!).



I personally lost respect for Lindsay Davenport after she, as well as Hingis, attacked Mauresmo after being beaten by her at the Australian Open. It was largely publicised that Hingis did, but so did Davenport. I was so disappointed because I admired her so much for proving all her critics wrong.



I'm going for the Belgium duo, Henin and Clijsters. Hopefully this time Clijsters can win!



I do miss watching Steffi Graf... those legs are amazing!

You know, I had heard about what happened with Hingis and Davenport saying things about Mauresmo, so I looked up some information about it when I first heard. I was disappointed that Lindsay would say anything negative about Mauresmo. Anyway, what I found was things like this and this and that supposedly Lindsay sent a personal apology to Mauresmo even though she was complimenting her on her play. Hingis on the other hand was being intentionally negative with her comments, and never apologized.



Anyway... I need to remember not to come in here before they show Wimbledon on tv here. I read that Hewitt lost and then the match was on. Heh. Oh well. I still say Go Lindsay!

I was watching a Dutch sports program about Wimbledon tonight and one of the guests was a Dutch tennis player (didn't catch his name), anyway he and the presenter were talking about Andre Agassi, he was asking the tennis dude if he knew Andre well blah blah. Well apparently Andre doesn't let people get real close easily so he could not tell much, but he did have one funny anecdote.



He saw Andre just before the Roland Garros finale in 1999. Apparently male tennis players like to gossip a bit so Dutch dude asked Andre whether he had heard the rumor about Steffi Graf having a girlfriend or whether he knew anything about it. Weeeell, what Dutch dude did not know was that Andre had just started dating Steffi and that bit of 'news' rattled Andre so much that he almost pissed away the finale.



Later the presenter asked the guy whether there was any truth to that rumor and Dutch dude said "well obviously not, she is married to Andre now and they have a wonderful son".

So there you have it, Steffi is married to Andre so she can't possibly have had a girlfriend. Some men are so naive, it's adorable.

My boss has ridiculed my suggestion that we need a tv in our office, sadly. But at least I have the live scoreboard and radio wimbledon to keep me going during working hours. Not the same as watching the matches, but it'll do I suppose.



A few interesting matches today. I'd say the Henin-Hardenne -v- Mary Pierce one will be entertaining as both usually fight to the last.

Venus Williams won when she wore down fellow American Lindsay Davenport 6-2 2-6 6-1 to stride into the Wimbledon semi-finals.



Sealed victory after one hour 27 minutes with a bludgeoning smash.

The two Ladies matches today went to 3 sets, with Venus and Kim Clijsters victorious.



Capriati seems to have started well against Serena, I wonder will there be another 3 set match.

Although Capriati took the first set 6-2, I do not think she can keep up with the game anymore. Way too many unforced errors in the last two games and it looks like Ms.Williams is gonna sail through as she's on a roll.

As for one of the finalists: I still set my hope on Clijsters. And guess she'll play Serena.

I think I'd like to see Justine versus either Venus or Kim in the final. Justine is sure to be confident after beating Serena and winning the title at the french open, but tennis is a funny little game!

I am sorry Capariati lost. I don't exactly why I favour her really, maybe because she fought her way back to the top. I admire that. Not that I don't admire Serena Williams. She is awesome to watch. So much power and skill. What is not to admire. The semi finals will be interesting indeed. I think we'll get a finale between Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams. I have no Nostradamuslike skills to base this on, just wishful thinking, but sometimes that works too.
