It's Home Remedy Thursday, MKF (6/16)

Postby vix84 » Wed Jun 15, 2005 11:10 pm

To my absolute disbelief and annoyance, I have the flu yet again. Anyone that speaks to me know that I've had the flu about three times in the last month. It makes me insane!

Enough on that. I wanted to know what home remedies people use to treat the flu. My Indian co-worker suggested a scary combination of peeled ginger, sugar, salt, lime and hot water, all blended together. Previously he has suggested I boil black pepper, ginger, turmeric and sugar together in a pot and drink it down. ARGH! Not the yummiest beverage I've consumed.

Soooo what interesting and unusual things do you cook or concoct for the flu? Does it come from your culture, family or friends?

And what do you think Willow and Tara would do? I think Will would go straight for the chicken soup while Tara would be inclined to start mixing leaves and herbs.

This is not a "competition" I want anyone to be in, but I've had bronchitis for the last 3 weeks and today I just went to see the third doctor / second specialist. I'm so drugged up it's not even funny, I cough like I'm an 80 year old who has been smoking 50 a day for the last 50 years, when I don't smoke at all.

Something my grandmother and mother did when we had bad coughs was boil some Coke (yes, Coca-Cola -- original, not Diet, not Cherry, no funny flavors) with lemon and peeled ginger. It's very soothing, even better than the traditional honey and lemon. The only recipe that beats that came from my college supervisor - honey and whisky. Yeah, that works too, but probably not a good idea to mix alcohol with whisky. So I'll stick to the coke.

I've noticed ginger featuring heavily in many home remedies for flus and coughs. Makes me think it actually has an effect.

Hope your flu gets better!

In my home, when someone has the flu, we have coke, just plain coke, sometimes warm (it's easier on the tummy). and it helps settle nausia.

I got the flu too..but i'm not staying at home.. can't miss class..

Well..ginger does work, but also lemon, honey, chamomile tea, onion(do not cook all together..when you cook most vegetables lose their properties and some vitamins),eucalyptus tea (which i'm not sure you have or even know..but here grows like grass :lol ) and mint oil(apply on your nose or chest before sleep).

I actually study a career related to medicine, so I strongly recomend not to take antibiotics or any kind of medication, that'll only make the flu get stronger every time.(just drink lots of water)

take care
hope your flu go away!(Bad Flu! :lol )

I don't have the flu, but last night I got to have dinner with Steve Rankin, aka the actor who played Tara's father. He's married to a friend of mine from my choir, and last night was our end-of-the-season party. I got my own live personal re-creation of Mr. MacLay telling Tara, "You're my daughter, and I love you - but you're a demon." :lol

Shane, are you Australian? I can't imagine where else Eucalyptus grows like grass. :P What sort of career are you studying? Judging by your herbal suggestions, I'm guessing alternative medicine or naturopathy. That's cool because I work in complementary med and I'm in Aus too.

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone! I hope everyone else feeling sick gets better to. *makes note to buy coke*

BBOvenGuy, I'm just curious if you were tempted to punch him. How scary to have heard him say that in real life.

He's a nice guy, really. We'd been talking about the Indy 500 and Star Trek conventions, too.

You can see some photos I took of both him and his wife at the past two Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contests by clicking here.

Although i do have a secret love for a Australia :p (which after this is not so secret :lol ), i'm from SouthAmerica..almoust directly in front of you..but with an ocean in between (so bad).
I study medical technology (a.k.a. clinical laboratory scientist) which is really good, but not my passion..-I've taken classes of alternative medicine and naturopathy, also reflexology, massage therapy, yoga and reiki.-

I enjoy most drawing and writing, mixed with alternative health, music and some sports.

Hope you get well.(the flu issue)

Take care
