no way! dibs!

I will tell you, I did not expect an almost-fight-to-the-death. But then again, you're really really good at surprising us, aren't you? :)

I'm quite glad you're back and continuing this, even more so knowing another story will be on the way eventually.

I expected Willow to collapse before Tara.

Poor Willow.

Poor Tara.

Poor Books.

Where is Narnia now?

That's seven, Rach, you might even get Diane's billyclub at this rate - lol.

Wow, that was a hell of a fight - Willow is one tough cookie!

Fabulous action sequences - a choreography of dangerous ballet - I loved it, I saw every move in my mind and, right up to the end, I wasn't sure who was going to win. The suspense was killing me, but I resisted scrolling down to see the outcome as I was enjoying the tension so much.

Just one question, now that Willow has bested Tara (Genie Tara?), does that mean she now holds the leash?

I doubt President Wilkins will be happy either way.

Just fantastic, Phoenix, and I can't wait to see how this tale develops from here.

I've read a lot of fics, but never have I read a story where Willow and Tara have battled it out so fiercely...and against one another at that! Jen *grins*, you have created a most intriguing world, which I have missed terribly while you worked on your rewrite of The Lamb. I'm so glad to see you back with this fic, and as always, I'll be keeping an eye out for the next update. Oh, and you can call me Sheba.

I'm a lurker but wanted to say how much I'm enjoying this one. It's really well written and one believes in the characters. Also like the world you're creating - I'm all for dark and moody and the higher the angstometre the better as far as I'm concerned.

Cheers.

OMG!!!!
That was so bloody intense! I so didn't see that fight coming for some reason. I liked reading Willow's thoughts throughout the battle about what a great adversary Tara was, she was tougher than any battle or training Willow had been in.

I was totally on the edge of my seat during that entire update... I can't even imagine where this will go next.

Brilliant job!

Betrayal

No time to waste.

As Tara fell unconscious to the floor, Willow tossed aside her rapier and stumbled to her pack. Her fingers left bloody prints on it as she yanked it open, her breath ragged and wet. First a thick pad of cloth she pressed against the slice on her belly. Then she fished for her phone; once she found it her fumbling and slick fingers had a hard time gripping it. Somehow she pressed the number one; when Faith immediately answered Willow said, “I need you up here right now.”

Faith would come up from the back entrance, just as Willow had done. Willow hobbled back to the fallen woman, pressing as hard as she was able over her gut wound. Sparks and darkness wavered at the corners of her eyes as her stomach boiled; she forced consciousness on herself. She would schedule time for a faint later.

By the time she fell by Tara's side, Faith was already running through the silken curtain between the den and the living area. Willow was panting with pain and sick with fear. Faith didn't pause to curse or ask questions; she strode to the pack and yanked out the foam gun. Willow managed to touch the side of Tara's neck, comforted by the fluttery pulse she felt under the precious skin.

“You first,” Faith demanded as she returned to Willow's side, setting the foam gun down for a moment. “This is going to hurt.”

Willow clenched her jaw as her driver/bodyguard took Willow's nose in her hands. With yet another sickening crack and jab of pain, Willow's nose was reset. From the pack Faith took an ointment and gently mashed it into Willow's nose, constricting the blood vessels. When the flow of blood eased Faith softly pushed Willow to the ground. It wouldn't do to have Willow drown in her own blood, sliding down her throat.

“Hurry,” Willow breathed.

Faith lifted the cloth away and swiftly applied a thick layer of foam over her belly wound. The coolness of the salve felt tremendous against her skin; Willow may have noticed it more if she hadn't been pierced with so much worry over Tara.

“Now her.”

Faith rolled Tara on her back, and Willow could finally see the thin line of blood at Tara's throat.

(I almost killed her)

Willow managed to turn her head before she vomited on the Persian rug, coughing and spitting.

Faith applied the foam over the entrance and exit wounds in Tara's side, then along the deep cut of her leg. “Hospital or home?” the bodyguard asked as she finished.

“Home,” Willow replied, her limbs shaking, pain roaring like a dragon enraged throughout her body.

There was blood in Tara's hair. There had been blood in Buffy's hair. Willow dry-heaved on her hands and knees. Faith helped her up, careful not to step in the mess of Willow's breakfast.

“Pick her up,” Willow gasped, picking up her pack. She left the rapier discarded on the floor.

Faith didn't hesitate. She bent and picked up Tara's inert body, and Tara's head lolled against Faith's shoulder, and her hand hung down her side.

No time.

“Back door.”

Those stolen blueprints had certainly come in handy. The vault door in the front was still locked. Willow followed her bodyguard through Tara's apartment, wishing as she did earlier that she had the time to drink in every part of Tara's existence, to see what pictures Tara had hung, what food was in her fridge, what music she listened to. Willow forced herself to stumble behind Faith.

Down the emergency exit, to the sedan that waited in the alley.

Willow opened the back door and sat down, then slid over a little on the shiny leather. Faith immediately tucked the Apothecary next to Willow, closed the car door and dashed for the front seat. In moments they were screaming down the morning streets of Sunnydale, but Willow didn't notice, nor did she care, because Tara was in her arms again, and blood was in Tara's hair, and there was a slash across Tara's throat that Willow dealt with her own sword.

Faith needed no further instruction. She drove as fast as she dared, talking through the speakerphone to Giles, telling him what happened and what preparations had to be made. Before Willow could ask, Faith also told Giles to order a cleanup crew to report to the den. In only hours the den of the Apothecary would not hint of their battle, not with a new and identical Persian carpet and teatable.

There could be no replacing of the priceless book. Narnia now had the taste of blood, in a betrayal far greater than poor Edmund could imagine.

Willow had her arm around Tara's waist; she could both hear and feel Tara's slight wet breathing. The weight of Tara's body against her broken chest was nearly unbearable, jagged icicles pierced her lungs, fire raged along the cut of her belly. The stink of blood was shiny and insistent.

She was holding Tara in her arms. It was something she had longed to do for the past seven days.

(that mark, I recognize it)

Not like this, though. Not like this.

When they hit Miller's woods Faith accelerated even more. At the gate to the estate Faith activated the emergency bypass, verified by Willow in her wavering voice. No time to submit to a retinal scan.

Robin and Jenny were waiting at the entrance to the house.

The sedan had barely screeched to a halt when Robin opened the back door. He picked Tara up carefully in his strong gardener hands; the sudden lack of Tara-warmth upon her was shocking. Jenny was helping Willow out of the car as Robin carried Tara into her house, Faith dashing ahead to open the front door.

Before Willow could comment on the absence of her puppy, Jenny said, “Jupiter is tied up outside. We don't need him underfoot right now.”

Jenny had her arm around Willow's side, helping her stagger up the steps. Never had the entrance to her house seemed so daunting.

(did I kill her?)

Willow shut her fear away. There was no time for it. Tara would live. Willow hadn't killed her, no she hadn't.

(live, Tara, live)

It seemed to take forever to get through the house. By the time Willow and Jenny got to the recovery room next to the dojo, Tara's clothes had already been cut away, her body covered with a linen sheet. The pale-haired woman lay on a narrow cot, elevated to the ideal height for her steward's work.

A steward, a surgeon, and a sword-fighter. Giles really was amazing.

Robin was preparing the curved surgeon's needle and thread as Giles gave Tara an injection. The scar-faced Briton didn't look up as Willow and Jenny entered the room; he merely said, “Lie over there, Willow.”

Another cot had been prepared, and Jenny helped Willow lay on it. A vast wave of black faint cascaded over her, her blood thundering in her ears and through her wounds; by some miracle Willow remained conscious.

“Will she be all right?” Willow asked, her voice trembling with post-traumatic stress. Her hands were quivering, which she could not stop.

“Yes. Jenny, give this injection to Willow,” he said, still not looking at her, taking the prepped needle from Robin's gloved hands. Robin handed a vial to the Gyptian; she took out a syringe and asked, “How much, Rupert?”

“2 CC's.”

Before Willow could protest, Jenny injected her; the prick led to a resulting heat that was nearly blissful. Willow wanted to protest, but already a veil of moonbeams and stardust seemed to lie between her body and her mind. This heated flood along her veins tasted a little like the dragonsbreath of the den; after kissing Tara the first time Willow had never wanted to succumb to drugs ever again.

Jenny asked Robin and Faith to leave; after they had gone she tenderly cut away Willow's own clothes, covering her with two different sheets, leaving a gap where the yellow foam squatted in Willow's belly wound.

As if from a great distance she watched the impromptu surgery of the Apothecary. “She'll need blood,” Willow thought she heard her Steward say. Jenny fished in the fridge for a blood pack as Giles swiftly typed the Apothecary. Soon there was a steady drip of life back into Tara's body.

She still hadn't moved of her own volition since collapsing in the den.

When finished sewing Tara up, giving her another injection for the pain and against infection, Giles tore off his gloves and washed his hands in the basin. Toweling them dry, he drew on a new set of latex gloves and sat near Willow. There was only Jenny with them now; she held Willow's hand. He peered at Willow's nose first. This close the scar on his cheek looked like a canyon.

(I hurt everyone with my mistakes)

“Faith did a good job,” Giles finally exclaimed. “This should heal nicely.” He prepped another syringe. Willow, remembering the blissful heat from earlier and the promise she hadn't shared with anyone, said, "Don't knock me out, Giles."

(I don't trust you)

“It's just a local anesthetic, Willow.”

(Why is he suddenly calling me Willow?)

Besides, she still wasn't entirely sure of him. If she slept, what would they do to Tara?

Would Jenny look at the Apothecary and remember her own scars?

Willow's belly went numb.

As accustomed as she had become to the sight of blood she still couldn't actually watch Giles work on her. The cut needed two separate layers of stitches, one deeper in her tissue, and one on the surface.

Willow looked at the ceiling instead. It was boring. It was this eggshell colour of off-white. There should be something up there. “Jenny, who painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?” Willow asked. “His name started with an M, didn't it?”

“It was Michelangelo, Miss Rosenberg,” Jenny replied, her hands suddenly in gloves, assisting Giles.

“I want to hire him. He needs to paint my ceiling.”

“I'll see if he's available.”

“Good.”

Willow blinked her eyes and when she opened them, the ceiling was different and the room was dark. She was about to congratulate Jenny on hiring Michelangelo so fast when she realized that she was no longer in the recovery room. Before she could sit up in surprise, a warm hand touched her bicep, holding her down.

“Don't get up,” Jenny said. “Not yet.”

As she woke, pain suddenly ignited in her veins, travelling at light speed through her body. With a light groan, Willow asked, “Tara?”

“Beside you. Be careful.”

Willow swivelled her head carefully. Tara was there, lying on her back in Willow's broad bed, dressed in some of Jenny's pajamas; a light top and pants. She was breathing, but it wasn't the terrifying wet and shallow hiss it was earlier. Jenny must have washed Tara's hair; it was still a little damp and there was no blood in it.

With the cool dampness of her own hair, Willow realized that Jenny must have cleaned her up as well.

“How long?” Willow asked, starting to sit up.

“Stay down, please,” Jenny said, pressing Willow's bicep again. “It's nightfall. You've both been out all day.” There was a grim tightness to Jenny's voice, a very thin thread of hatred running through it.

"I thought I told Giles not to knock me out," Willow said.

"Your body has better sense than you, Miss Rosenberg."

Willow could barely recognize Miss Calendar here in the darkness, with that hatred in her voice, that ancient scorn.

Willow hadn't planned for this either.

“She didn't hurt me,” Willow said softly. “It may have looked like her, but it wasn't.”

The woman's eyes continued to blaze. Turning away from the suddenly alarming Jenny, Willow looked at Tara again, and her face was pale, her eyelashes golden on her cheeks. Hunger rumbled inside her, twisting her stomach with enough strength that even Jenny heard it.

“I'll bring you something to eat,” Jenny said. “Stay down until I come back, okay? I'll help you up then.”

Willow nodded, her face tight. Jenny paused on her way out and asked, “Would you like anything for the pain, Willow?”

(dragonsbreath

never again)

“No,” Willow said. “I'll be all right.”

Jenny's eyes blazed a little brighter, and Willow was almost taken aback. For a moment it looked as if the Gyptian woman was about to protest again, and tell Willow she was being foolish, but then she merely swallowed and walked out of the room. The moment she left, Faith came in and crouched by the wall without saying a word.

It surprised Willow that Faith could wait there so patiently. Faith had always seemed to have too much restless energy to simply sit.

Did Willow know anything about her staff at all?

Time was a mischievous devil. Though it was probably only five or ten minutes until Jenny returned, to Willow it seemed hours.

Tara gave off heat like a furnace. Every molecule in Willow's body was aware of her.

When Jenny returned with soup, Willow wasn't quite able to feed herself. With that same resigned detachment, Jenny fed her, spoon after spoon, until all the hot liquid was gone. As sleep began to threaten, Giles came to her bedside.

In his hand was a fetish; beads and claws and a charm. Even as she saw it, she recognized it. It had come from the shah's palace in Persia, where it had been a trophy gained by the shah in a victory over the Tartars. It was usually locked in one of the vaults downstairs with the other dangerous items.

Giles had joined Willow's household when he was nearly forty years old. He had never completely revealed his past to her.

(when did he become a shaman?)

“You will sleep dreamless tonight,” he intoned, swiping the fetish over her chest and over her forehead. Willow began to feel hot and lethargic, delightfully thick and contented, a feather pillow somehow between herself and her injuries.

And her eyes widened as she realized that Jenny and Giles had betrayed her.

What would they do to Tara, when she was asleep and helpless?

A strange woman was now standing in the doorway to her bedroom. All the light was behind her; her face was cast in shadow. She was tall and slender with skin so pale it was nearly luminescent. Chocolate brown hair was lush against her shoulders, creamy and bare with the Victorian gown she wore. When she took one more step into Willow's room, Willow could finally see her face, scarcely illuminated by the thumbnail moon. This strange woman had an ethereal and frightening beauty, with noble cheekbones and high eyebrows.

Her teeth were perfect.

Sleep assaulted Willow, even as she struggled to stay awake. Who was this person in her home?

(why did they betray me?)

She could not fight two such battles in one day. As she slid further down the sleep slope, clawing against it with fingers of dandelion fluff, she saw the woman enter her bedchamber completely. Her manicured fingernails clicked against the wooden beads of the rosary around her neck; she counted the beads in a steady fanatical flow.

She smelled of rosewater.

“Too close it was, Willow Rosenberg,” the woman whispered in a Cockney accent, coming near her, her voice surprising girlish. “You danced with the devil and no one else could hear the music. If you hadn't been more careful all your insides would have been out and then how could we possibly predict the future? The entrails of the swine only predict for the swineherd.”

Eyelids drooping, Willow watched the strange woman circle her bed before pausing by the sleeping Tara. She lifted the hem of Tara's borrowed shirt and placed her hand on Tara's belly. Willow wanted to jump up, push the woman away, skewer her like a pig if possible, but magic held her in chains and made her mind fuzzy. She managed a frown, even while inside she was screaming.

“Hush, little poppet,” the woman crooned to Tara, “That won't work, you know. It's all dark in the house. You write your thoughts on the madhouse wall but I can still read them. The voices of the damned have a song to sing and even if the voices aren't real, they do have good ideas. Stay sleeping. My head will sing while yours is silent, and the orchestra is missing the fiddler.”

The woman had the temerity to lie down completely on the other side of Tara; she draped her gown over Tara's blanket-covered legs before lifting the hem of Tara's shirt. She slid her white hand like a snake under the fabric, her hand gliding over bare skin, drawing perilously close to Tara's breast. Willow fumed, and could do nothing.

With her blood red lips, the woman kissed Tara on the cheek.

“Who...?” Willow stammered, furious and wilting, unable now to move, barely able to speak.

“They call us Drusilla in the nighttime, yes they do, and when daylight comes I get to sing a new song.”

Willow fell asleep to the image of Drusilla kissing Tara again on the cheek, and then kissing her beads.

on a roll! Dibs!

It's only natural that after so much fighting, healing needs to happen both physically and mentally. This chapter, while keeping the intrigue pulsing, is a welcome respite from the action and tension.

Jenny is pissed(still want to find out how that talk between her and Willow happened!) as I'm sure are some of the other staff. Only natural for them to worry about Wills. But dauym, Drusilla is creepy, no matter how you spin her. Is she doing good here(in her crazy little way)? I sure hope so!

What, you have a problem with 'Ms. Phoenix'?! :p Haha, but yes, feedback... this was an interesting update. I think it was much needed, because personally it felt like an update where you just let what's happened to far sink in. That's not to say that I'm not wondering what'll happen next though!

I also realized that while in The Lamb it was Tara saving Willow, this time it's the other way around :) Nice! Well, I hope your meeting goes well, because I have no doubt that any version of The Lamb would sell like hot-cakes! Cheers!

Now I´m glad they´re okay, but Dru always creep me out...

thanks for the update, and good luck with your meeting!

That was fucking fantastic. You really cranked up the tension in that update. I love the question marks hanging over all of the characters, it's impossible to know who to trust and it makes for gloriously uncomfortable reading.

And, Drusilla. I'm a sucker for the mad girl but my heart rate always increases exponentially whenever she enters the fray.

Can't wait for more. Thanks for sharing.

Phoenix,

Wow, that was a mighty intense update... actually the last two have been extremely intense! Whew girl, what a ride!!!

I certainly don't like the appearance of Drusilla, that can't be a good thing. :)

Can't wait to see what Tara's reaction will be finding herself at Willow's place. And Giles and Jenny although they appear to be up to something, I am hoping they are just looking out for Willow. :)

Looking forward to what's next!

As promised, some feedback response before the update!

Zooey's Bridge - Hey Rachel! Congrats on the double dibs. Paint the Sky has been keeping a tally, and if you keep this up, you might get Diane's billy club. Even better, you might get your own weapon of choice, courtesy of Willow's dojo!
I will tell you, I did not expect an almost-fight-to-the-death. But then again, you're really really good at surprising us, aren't you?
You know, I do try. I'm glad it shows! I can only hope I can continue to surprise you. Such as Dru. Dru came as a complete surprise to me - sauntered into my head and demanded a part in my story. I didn't want her to slice my throat open with her nails, so I just did as I was told. You'll see soon whether or not she can behave herself. Good luck for another dibs!

Paint the Sky - So cool that you're keeping the dibs tally. I had been keeping track for a while, but then sort of... stopped. Oh, well.
Just one question, now that Willow has bested Tara (Genie Tara?), does that mean she now holds the leash?
This concept tugged at me until I remembered where I had seen it elsewhere. Harry Potter, of course. The Elder Wand. You know, I don't think I ever really understood until that exact moment a few weeks ago while Dumbledore was so adamant that Harry not give up his wand to the Ministry when they wanted to arrest him. That JK Rowling. Wow. Anyhoo, you're actually incorrect in this case. It only means that the compulsion to kill whoever revealed her identity would cease. I'm glad you're enjoying this, I hope you like what happens next!

*WILLOW* - Hey! Good to have you here on my thread. Thanks for leaving a comment, I really appreciate it. I'm enjoying the writing of this fic at least as much as you enjoy the reading of it, so I will definitely keep it up. I'll probably even finish it! Enjoy!

MelCar19 - This is definitely either a Yay or Oh No kind of moment. In the next chapter, I'm glad you enjoyed how Willow took care of Tara, even over her own wellbeing.
Good luck on your book! Keep us posted!
As you wish! I had a great time in Cincinnati, got some awesome feedback, and before you know it, Mistletoe will be on your local bookshelves. Unfortunately, that is still a little bit of wishful thinking; I haven't sold it yet. But the editor who looked at it wants to see it again once I make some changes, and that's very promising! Thanks!

Shai - Heya Sheba.
I've read a lot of fics, but never have I read a story where Willow and Tara have battled it out so fiercely...and against one another at that!
It just felt so right when it was coming out, and the implications range very far. I'm glad you enjoyed it. For your feedback on the next chapter, you used the word "interesting". I must admit, my heart gave a little hammer. Interesting can go both ways. I hope the little lull in action was what you needed, and that you enjoy what's coming up! Thanks, Sheba!

Zampsa - Thanks for the feedback, as always. It would be a little too easy for Tara to get off the hook with Wilkins like that, so you'll find that her ownership hasn't changed. Should make a relationship intriguing, though, won't it?
I hope Tara properly thanks Willow for helping her...
Oooh, we'll get to that. In spades. Oh, yes. Delirious.

Little Bit - I'm glad you enjoyed the visceral action scenes of the battle chapter; I had to mine one of my fantasy books for action sequences, and I'm glad I did!
Your writing leaves me breathless!
Thanks! Take a deep breath before reading the next one!

mixxie - Are you new to my thread, too? Welcome! Thanks for leaving feedback - it's my personal opium. I hope you enjoyed the following update as well!

Smiley CC - Thanks for the kudos. I'm glad you're enjoying this story.
hopefully Drucilla is there for the good and not to do bad things to Tara.
But where's the fun? Dru was always about the fun, wasn't she? Read and see! Thanks for commenting!

Nue - Hmm, I left you speechless? Yay! Mission accomplished. Dru leading to skin crawling seems to be a common thing here. I'm so glad! Ever since she popped into my head she's been fantastic to write. I find myself wondering what I can make her do... Enjoy the next update! (So Tara means fetish? Interesting...)

ceridwen - I'm so glad you got to see the fight as I was writing it. Those kind of fight scenes aren't easy to write and make plausible. Thanks for leaving some feedback and I hope you enjoy the next chapter.

restlessminds - Ohmygoodness, thank you for leaving feedback. I love it when lurkers come out of the woodwork.
Also like the world you're creating - I'm all for dark and moody...
You mean this isn't hugs and puppies? Kidding. I also love this cool caress of a story. And this...
it's impossible to know who to trust and it makes for gloriously uncomfortable reading.
Love. It. Thank you. Gloriously uncomfortable. That's gonna be my goal. Thanks for sharing!

irishgrl3 - Wow, thanks for the awesome feedback. You weren't the only one taken by surprise with the bloodworks. It is rather neat to discover how talented Tara is in that regard, isn't it?
Whew girl, what a ride!!!
Just trying to make things memorable for you. Also, to be frank, this forum is a fantastic way to practice writing. Honestly, the more I write here, the better I'll be when my stuff hits the rest of the world. Thanks for commenting!

JustSkipIt - Hi, Deb, good to see you still hanging around. I'm glad you enjoyed the quick pace of the action scene. I've got some revelations coming; I hope you enjoy them!

CrazyTaraWitch - Isn't it awful when our Internet conks out on us? Makes us remember those days when it didn't exist, though sometimes that's hard to believe. Thank you so much for continuing to read and leave comments, I really appreciate it. Enjoy the next chapter!

Dorothy - Now that you've woken up the entire hostel (good for you!) I hope you enjoyed the update. Should I extend a global apology for when you discover this next one? Enjoy!

tacoda 13 - Thank you very much. I'll definitely be keeping this story up - I love it too much to let it go!

That's everyone! Big hand of thanks to masterjendu for continuing her beta duties so religiously. I've been remarkably prolific lately, and she still finds time somehow to help me with plot development as well as catching my grammar mistakes. I promise, Jen, that some day I will learn the past participle of the verb "to lay". Promise.

Update coming right up!

The Gordian Knot is a legend associated with Alexander the Great. It is often used as a metaphor for an intractable problem, solved by a bold stroke.

Gordian Knot

"Faith," Giles said, his voice thick with weariness.

"Yes, sir."

"You will watch until midnight. Master Robin will watch until five am, and then I will take over. When she wakes, it will be best if I were here."

"How long will she be staying?" Faith asked, looking in the direction of Drusilla, who was now crooning a strange minor lullaby with a whispered hiss into the ear of the enchanted Tara.

"Until dawn, so Jenny can get some sleep. Then Jenny will relieve her."

Giles started to walk out of the room, still clutching the fetish in his hand. As he passed through the doorway, using the fetish to touch the lintel and the jambs, he heard Faith say, "Willow might never forgive you for this, Giles."

Giles didn't pause to answer her. For some things there are no words.

The house was silent. Even down the hallway he could hear Faith whisk out her switchblade to cut into an apple. All the lights in the house were off; he walked along those marvelous works of art, now shrouded in nighttime and swathed in mystery. Each painting had a special significance for his employer. It was no surprise that further down the hall the paintings evolved into darker, more sinister applications of maleficence and despair.

Willow had acquired them after Buffy's death.

Buffy.

My god, why did this whole Gordian knot revolve around Buffy?

Giles needed no light to navigate this house. Soon he was through the slender walkway connecting the mansion to the servants quarters, where each wing had its own complete apartments with kitchens, baths, and common rooms. Each wing connected at the center where there was a communal kitchen and sitting area; frequently used by Willow's staff who loved each other as they loved her.

Faith was the only one who hung apart, but she was still new.

How Willow managed to lure her away from President Wilkins Giles still had no idea.

His step was quiet, but Jupiter's ears were sharp. The puppy ran down the hallway, couldn't stop on the slightly slippery tile, and crashed into Giles' legs. Despite himself, Giles found himself smiling. "Confound you rascal!" he said, slapping Jupi lightly on the rump to get him going back to the kitchen.

Light was waiting there, and so was Jenny.

Jenny Calendar was seated at the oaken table with a cup of steaming something in her hands. The scent of the cordial was exotic and delightful, with a hint of cumin. She looked up as Giles entered the room, and her face was haggard. She opened her mouth to say something, and then closed it again.

Giles sat on a chair next to her. This close her own scent was just as bewitching. He reached into his pocket for his handkerchief and polished his glasses, giving her a moment to collect her thoughts. When she still didn't speak, he said, "You are safe here, Jenny. Here you can say whatever you wish."

Jenny's jaw was tight. She took another sip of her cordial. Finally she said, "I have never known anyone as stubborn as she. I think I've finally figured her out."

"And?" Giles prompted.

"I think," Jenny replied slowly, staring into her mug,"that she likes being the martyr. Like it is noble, or that it makes all the horrors in her life worthwhile. If she can remember just how dejected she is, she doesn't have to face life at all. She can spend all her time regretting the past."

Giles nodded. Like usual, the Gyptian woman's intuition was impeccable. Jenny looked at him and said, "I never thought I'd live to see the day when I would let Drusilla back into my life. I dare say she was absurdly pleased to discover that I needed her. Even though she swore to behave, I'm still not sure I can trust her. I just hope that she and I are powerful enough to contain Tara."

"I hope Willow doesn't decide to eviscerate us before we can explain," Giles replied, his voice grim. "Right now she can only see what we've done as betrayal."

At his stricken voice, Jenny squeezed his hand, and then abruptly got up from the table to get another mug from the cupboard; pouring more of her cordial into it, she handed the beverage to Giles.

"I don't recognize this," Giles said, sniffing first as he had been taught. The smell of it whispered of ancient oracular magics.

He trusted Jenny with more than his life. He took a sip without waiting for her explanation. The taste of it rocketed through his veins, and caused his skin to pebble in gooseflesh.

"I haven't made it since my initiation," Jenny replied slowly. "It takes a week to mature. I started making it the day I told Willow about Tara."

She wouldn't look at him in the eyes, and Giles suddenly understood. "You sent her on a wild goose hunt, didn't you?" he asked. "You needed time, so you sent her traipsing all over the globe. There was no real need for her to go to Rumania, to Tokyo."

Jenny flicked her eyes up, wary and shameful. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Giles. I have no idea how many audio bugs there could be in this house. I didn't want to risk it."

"Jenny, you are bloody brilliant."

Jenny's face went from confusion to relief. "So you don't blame me?" she asked.

"Not at all. We all have our secrets. I could ask what this cordial is for, but then I might not like the answer, so I'm not going to ask at all."

"You have just as many," Jenny agreed. "You still haven't told Willow what you were doing while she was in Rumania rescuing me."

Giles nodded.

"Why haven't you told her, Giles?"

The kitchen had two sets of lights; both electrical and naphtha. It was naphtha that flooded the kitchen now with its motherly warm glow, and under its influence Jenny looked like the Princess she was. Her soft dark brown hair crested over the slopes of her shoulders, and her olive skin was almost translucent in the winsome lights. It was rare for Giles to see Jenny so open, and so afraid.

"You and I both tried to keep her from the mystical dangers of the world," Giles replied, and he moved his scarred hand over to clasp hers. "I had never known two women more capable of the physical dangers of this line of work. Buffy and Willow were sword sisters in every way. Willow had long ago conquered the logical world; I feared her entrance into this one."

Jenny nodded, so Giles continued. "I think I did what I did because I wanted to protect them. As a swordmaster and a surgeon I knew how to protect them physically. As a shaman, I wanted to protect them from the dangers of the mystical world. If I had my choice, they would never discover it existed at all."

"Then I came," said Jenny, and her voice was lost and defeated.

"Don't you dare think that way," Giles growled, carefully squeezing her hand. "There are enough martyrs in this household already. We certainly don't need another one."

Jenny smiled, but it was painful and wan. The smell of the cordial was still in the air, lending another hint of mystery upon their conversation. For a wonder, Jupiter was already asleep on his dog bed in the corner. He lightly growled and flicked his paws as he dreamed.

Did he chase rabbits in the fields of Asphodel, or try to fly like the birds?

When he dreamed, did the puppy find Buffy?

"There is no use fretting about the past," Giles finally said. "What's done is done. For better or ill there is a djinn under our roof, and it is now obvious that she doesn't hold her own collar."

"Can you play the transmission for me again?" Jenny asked. "There's something I need to be certain of." She drained the last drop in her mug and waited.

Giles reached into his pocket and pulled out his mini-transceiver. Willow didn't know that he had planted a bug in her clothing before she left for the den with only Faith at her side. The little knowledge Jenny had of the adversary they faced in the form of the Apothecary had made him leery.

Willow would never have gone to the poppy den if Buffy were alive.

Buffy would still be alive if they had never gone to Persia.

Buffy died, and now there was a djinn under their roof.

(which bold stroke will sever this Gordian knot completely?)

There were many things he would have to ask forgiveness for.

He swiftly scrolled to the correct transmission and laid the transceiver on the table. From the speaker, Jenny and Giles could hear every word of the conversation that had occurred that morning in the Apothecary's den. As Jenny listened, her face changed from ethnic hatred to resigned acceptance.

Giles knew what Jenny was listening for. When they heard it, it was clear as day.

Willow loved this woman.

Have you come to kill me?

Do you deserve to be killed?

Yes.

Would you have me be your executioner?

I would have no other.

You hate me that much?

(pause)

It was here, wasn't it Tara? In the dream?

(pause)

And do you have nothing to say in your defence?

No.

By all the gods, Tara. What has this world done to you?

"Stop," Jenny choked. "Giles, make it stop."

Giles pressed a button and the transmission stopped.

Then his chair clattered to the ground as he knelt in front of Jenny. His own heart a tripwire in his chest, his whole soul aching for those two lost women in the den, employer and supposed enemy alike, but his heart caving to the immense sorrow and shame written on the face before him, the face of the woman he loved. He wrapped his arms around Jenny and held her.

She burrowed into him, hiccuping and sobbing.

For long moments they embraced, and she was birdlike in his grasp, and every tear that flowed down her cheek seemed to etch his skin like acid. Even through the thin fabric of her shirt he could feel the raised scar between her shoulderblades, the scar she'd never yet allowed him to see. "Rupert," she finally whispered into his ear, "how could we have been so wrong? Will Willow ever forgive us for what we've done?"

He clasped her even tighter, as if somehow he could just meld her to him, and place her inside his heart and soul, and protect her forever.

"I wanted to hate Tara, Rupert," Jenny continued slowly, her voice rocking over the spasms of her tears. "I wanted to blame her for what happened to me. Before today we couldn't be sure that she didn't hold her own collar."

While holding her to him, Giles recalled their reactions as they listened to the battle that ensued in real time over the mini-transceiver. White-knuckled and despairing, they could do nothing as Willow fought for her life. Faith, displaying obedience going a little too far, had obeyed Willow's command and not gone in until Willow summoned her.

This morning Jenny had hated Tara, but with every response the djinn gave to titanic Willow, Jenny and Giles both began to realize that Tara was a slave. And when the sound of swordfight erupted, they both knew that Tara was only a marionette, dancing to another's whim.

That was the only reason they didn't kill Tara on the spot when she arrived at the house.

Did Willow realize how dangerous Tara was?

Jenny pulled away slightly, just enough to look Giles in the eye. She kept her warm hands around him, and he was glad. As he looked upon her, magical and mystical in the creamy light, he saw her eyes change. The scent of the cordial was all around them.

Her mug was empty.

(I haven't made it since my initiation)

Her eyes no longer brown, now the most brilliant violet colour ever conceived, full of far-sighted wisdom and ageless wonder, Jenny said, "Giles, Tara is the key." She removed one of her hands from his back and placed it with her fingers splayed wide upon his chest.

Over his heart.

(It may be that her heart is locked tight, but she doesn't even look for a key.)

Her violet eyes full of amazement and celestial beauty, Janna of the Kalderash, Princess of the Gyptians, continued, "For night has come, and there is no Dawn."

His heart thrummed as the prophecy wafted over them. He could taste the cumin on his own tongue, but the cordial would not do for him what it would do for her.

"She is the key for us all," the Gyptian witch said, finishing the prophecy brought on by the cordial.

Slowly her eyes returned to normal; she gave a single spasm as she came back to herself. She looked at Giles with enough love and trust to make his knees quiver. "I had forgotten how strange that feels," she said. "Now that we know about Tara's part in this, what do we do, Rupert?" she asked softly.

With his callused fingers he caressed her cheek, and she leaned into that hand, her eyes half-lidded and weary. "We wait for dawn," he whispered.

Her velvet brown eyes were still glistening with tears. He touched those tears with his thumb, and then wrapped his hands around her neck. With the gentlest of pressure he guided her lips to his own. As he kissed her, he could feel her warm and bewitching hands encircle his broad shoulders and then run down his spine.

He kissed her, there in the lights of naphtha, and he could taste the elixir on her lips. His heart was a great and yowling beast, and only she could tame him.

He kissed her, and she kissed him.

They could not wait for the dawn.

Mid-kiss Jenny's eyes flew wide open. "Drusilla!" she gasped.

"What is it?" Giles asked.

"She broke her word! I should not have trusted her!"

Jupiter woke up as Jenny sprinted back to the house, and both he and Giles followed her.
