Aly doing stage version of "When Harry met Sally"

Postby Incarnadine » Mon Dec 22, 2003 3:22 pm

This just cropped up on a couple of Aly boards.

22nd December 2003 - What's on Stage News

Hannigan’s Sally Meets Perry’s Harry at Haymarket

Alyson Hannigan, of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and American Pie fame, will star opposite fellow Hollywood import Luke Perry (from Beverley Hills 90210) in the world premiere stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally, which opens 20 February 2004 (previews from 10 February) at the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket, where it’s booking up to 29 May 2004 (See News, 1 Dec 2003).

Rob Reiner's 1989 film of When Harry Met Sally starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as one-time college classmates who move to New York and, over many years, hate each other, become friends and, against their own better judgments, eventually fall in love.

Hannigan, who plays Sally to Perry’s Harry, is best known for her screen roles as witch Willow in the cult TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and as Michelle in the film series, American Pie, including the most recent American Wedding. Since making her debut at the age of 13 in the 1988 film My Stepmother is an Alien, Hannigan has appeared in more than 20 films.

Playwright Marcy Kahan has adapted the original Nora Ephron screenplay. The premiere stage production will be directed by Loveday Ingram, whose previous West End credits include My One and Only, The Blue Room and Bedroom Farce. Design is by Ultz, with music by Jamie and Ben Cullum. When Harry Met Sally is produced by James Tod.

Heh, nice. Good for Aly.

I've never seen the movie and I'm having a little trouble picturing Aly in this part for some reason. Luke Perry isn't helping either. Hee.

Good for her though. This sounds like it should be interesting.

Oh, to be in London when the theater season is here. :bounce

I can actually see Ally doing very well in that part, possibly even better than Meg Ryan. Less sure about Matthew Perry. Now, if it was Jason Priestly...

BTW, isn't the pic of Ally on the theater site adorable?

It's always great to hear about Aly working on good projects with talented people. Aly has a talent for comedy and will no doubt kick @ss as Sally. Even with her talent holding deal at NBC, Aly has been able to fit in quality projects that she has been interested in. You go girl! I hope that this exposure along with her 70's show gig will help make her NBC sitcom a reality.

xita, don't you mean twice an abused lesbian? Oh wait, silly me, Hollywood only knows how to do one kind.

Yeah Aly is going to be doing a play.

The bad news is of course she will be away from her new husband for a long time.

The good news is she won't be able to guest star on her husband's TV show.

But honestly this is really great for Aly. WHMS is actually one of my favorite movies (no joke) and I'd love to see her in it. Not just for the orgasm scene (thiugh I am very curious how she will pull it off), but this is the story of my wife and I. Well as close as any movie has gotten so far.

Yeah we were totaly creeped out when we saw it. Course we were in the "best friends that don't have sex with each other" part of our relationship then. Now we watch it in fondness.

Can't wait for some pics and reviews from Kittens.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Alyson Hannigan has London in fits of excitement with the news that she'll soon be staring in its theatre district.

The feisty redhead, who played lesbian witch Willow in the cult TV series, has beaten stars like Cameron Diaz and Reese Witherspoon to the leading role in a new stage version of When Harry Met Sally.

And part of Alyson's duties will be replicating the famous restaurant scene from the 1989 film, when Meg Ryan faked an orgasm in a busy eatery.

The 29-year-old will star alongside another longtime TV fixture Beverly Hills 90210's Luke Perry,in the Billy Crystal role.

Alyson's spokesman says, "This part is perfect for her. She's thrilled and she loves London as her husband Alexis Denisof is from there."

The show is scheduled to begin in February Theatre Royal on London's West End.

There is another article about this story at Playbill.com:

Quote:
Alyson Hannigan Will Be London Sally to Luke Perry’s Harry

22 Dec 2003

By James Inverne

Harry has his Sally. As previously reported here, Luke Perry is lined up to lead a stage version of Rob Reiner’s 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally. Now, Alyson Hannigan has been cast as his best-friend-turned-lover.

Hannigan is arguably a more bankable name than Perry these days, with her star-making turns in TV’s “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and the “American Pie” big-screen franchise. (Interestingly, with Anthony Head in rep at the Savoy it only needs Sarah Michelle Gellar to land a West End role for all three “Buffy” leads to "stake" their theatreland claims in 2004). When Harry Met Sally would see the 29-year-old actress moving away from adolescent roles.

The show, directed by Loveday Ingram and produced by James Tod, will open at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket on Feb 20, 2004, with previews from Feb.10. Ultz designs, with music by current ‘cool’ jazz star Jamie Cullum and his brother Ben.

The news means that 2004’s West End rosta of visiting screen stars on stage is filling up. Alongside Perry and Hannigan, Calista Flockhart and Holly Hunter are scheduled to headline productions with, no doubt, more to follow.

Edited to add: one more article at the London Theatre Guide:

Quote:
When Aly met Lukey

Alyson Hannigan, known to millions as Willow, the quirky witch from cult teen drama Buffy The Vampire Slayer, is to play Sally in the stage adaptation of archetypal Rom-Com When Harry Met Sally. Miss Hannigan (not the one from Annie) will star opposite Luke Perry, best known for his role in another American TV institution: Beverley Hills 90210. The show will open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on February 20 2004, after previewing from February 10.

For a lady whose major roles have been playing high school girls, Hannigan has actually been around the Hollywood circuit for a remarkably long time – she made her debut in 1988 as the 13-year old star of My Stepmother’s An Alien. She has since appeared in numerous films including the massively successful American Pie trilogy but it is for her role as the spellbinding Willow in Buffy The Vampire Slayer that she is best known.

Despite her Hollywood debut the year before, the 14-year-old Hannigan was cruelly overlooked for the role of Sally in the original film in 1989, which saw Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal team up in one of the most enduringly popular comedies ever. The film tells the story of former classmates Harry and Sally who meet up again as floundering 20-somethings in New York and embark on a relationship which lurches from downright dislike to orgasms in coffee shops before the inevitable happy ending. Nora Ephron wrote the original screenplay while playwright Marcy Kahan has adapted the script for the stage. The music for the film is provided by Jamie and Ben Cullum, the up-and-coming stars of British Jazz. The brothers have reworked the original score from the film and added some new compositions of their own.

'American Pie' Star Working Hard on Her 'Big O'

21 minutes ago Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Paul Majendie

LONDON (Reuters) - Hollywood star Alyson Hannigan (news) has been busy working on her orgasms.

On the London stage, she is to play the film role made famous by America's sweetheart Meg Ryan (news) in the 1989 cult movie "When Harry Met Sally."

The film's most celebrated scene takes place in a diner where Sally shows Harry how women fake orgasms, giving a loud, long and graphic portrayal of phony ecstasy which prompts one of the women customers to ask the waiter afterwards: "I'll have what she's having."

Asked at a London news conference if she had been busy practicing her orgasms, Hannigan said: "All the time."

But would hers be different from Ryan's famous outburst that so astonished Harry, played by Billy Crystal (news)?

The 29-year-old Hannigan said: "She is a different person than I am. So I imagine our orgasms would be slightly different. But I hope it will still be funny."

Hannigan, who played a flute-playing, nymphomaniac teen-ager in "American Pie," called the chance to play in London's theaterland "an opportunity of a lifetime."

She is also a fervent fan of the original "When Harry Met Sally."

"The movie is one of my favorites and this was such an amazing opportunity to get to come to London," she said.

Hannigan, who also played a witch in the cult TV series "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," will star in London opposite fellow American actor Luke Perry (news) of "Beverly Hills 90210" fame.

The pair are the latest in a long line of Hollywood stars -- from Nicole Kidman (news) to Kevin Spacey (news) -- to abandon their luxury film trailers and work in London for a pittance.

And Perry, who has appeared on stage in New York in "The Rocky Horror Show," is already braced for a grilling from the London critics.

Asked if he was nervous about treading the boards in London, the 37-year-old actor said: "I just want to do the work well. A lot of actors are nervous about the horrible stuff which is going to be written about them. But I have already had a lot of horrible stuff written about me so that is OK."

But he is not overawed. "We are taking a new medium and we have the challenge of making it fresh and new and accessible for the theater, allowing the audience to see it in a different way. It's like what you guys do with Shakespeare."

Hit movies have proved fertile ground for stage shows.

A British theater version of "The Graduate" was a box office hit in London and now the movie "Billy Elliot" is being developed as a musical.

When Harry met Sally...in London

By Keily Oakes

BBC News Online entertainment staff

When Harry Met Sally is one of the most successful film comedies of all time, not least because of Meg Ryan's famous fake orgasm scene. US actors Alyson Hannigan and Luke Perry face the unenviable task of taking the romantic plot to the stage at London's Theatre Royal.

Alyson Hannigan and Luke Perry will make their West End debut

The pair follow in the footsteps of many US stars, including Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Gillian Anderson, who have come to London to "develop their craft" in the West End.

Hannigan and Perry are both best-known for memorable TV characters.

Hannigan, 29, played lesbian witch Willow in the hit TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while Perry, 38, played bad boy Dylan in Beverly Hills 90210.

Chemistry

This will be Hannigan's first foray into theatre, saying the last time she was on stage was in high school.

Perry joked that for the youthful-looking Hannigan "that was only last week".

Perry, who found fame in 90210, has more experience, appearing on Broadway's Rocky Horror Show.

Both realise they have a challenge on their hands taking on the roles played by Ryan and Billy Crystal.

"I think that after the first few minutes people will see our chemistry and not think about the film," said Hannigan.

Perry added: "I think Billy Crystal would agree, the story is bigger than the actors."

Both decided to do the play because they are fans of the film, which was released in 1989.

'Sign me up'

"I loved the movie. I love the things it says about men and women and relationships," said Perry.

When Harry Met Sally starred Meg Ryan...

"It's never going away. I truly believe its going to be a classic."

Hannigan said: "This was such an amazing opportunity to come to London, which is one of my favourite cities, and I just thought 'sign me up'."

On the delicate subject of recreating Ryan's fake orgasm scene, Hannigan joked she has been practising "all the time".

Musician-of-the-moment Jamie Cullum and his brother Ben are providing the music to the play, reworking music from the movie as well as scoring original songs.

The play is initially taking ticket bookings up to 29 May, but Perry hopes it will be going for at least six months, jokingly pointing out that Phantom of the Opera has been playing in the West End for years and they could follow suit.

Drawback

But Hannigan may have other ideas, having recently married actor Alexis Denisof who she met on the set of Buffy before he moved to its sister show Angel.

"Being away from him was the biggest drawback to the job," she said.

...and Billy Crystal in the title roles

"I've been offered a few things that would have taken me away from home since we got married and they were easy to turn down.

"But this was too good to say no to."

She added that they have every kind of technology to keep them in touch, and was excited at the prospect of him coming to London next week.

Buffy has now come to an end after five series, and with such a cult following it is easy to see Hannigan having difficultly shaking off her Willow character.

Advice

But she said that starring in the recent movie American Wedding, the third in the American Pie series, and a development deal for a sitcom has meant she has been able to move on quickly.

Hannigan stepped up the aisle in American Wedding - the third American Pie film

And Perry, still remembered for his 90210 days despite numerous movie roles, said he took some sound advice on how to deal with his TV past from one TV's most famous characters - The Fonz.

"Henry Winkler gave me some advice, he said 'you created something out of nothing and people are going to remember that for a very long time'," said Perry.

Now both Perry and Hannigan will be hoping they can put their own stamp on two of movie histories much-loved characters, Harry and Sally.

When Harry Met Sally opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, London, on 20 February.
