It's Vegetarianism Weekend MKF 8/31

Postby WiccansIllusion » Fri Aug 30, 2002 6:21 pm

Well there was a friday thread but not a weekend thread. So I decided to make one. Recently, I've gone to a mix of Vegetarian/Veganism food wise, and had a question come to mind.

Do you think Willow and Tara are Vegetarians? Honestly I can see Tara going all "How can you eat that it had a face?" And Willow defending her honey down to the core.

As for a second question, do any of you vegetarian/vegan kitties have any good recipies out there that might not be found in a cook book?
One that I found was mixing tofu, tomato's, basil and basalmic vinegar in a salad. It's rather addicitve.

Hey WiccansIllusion,

Great thread (in my humble vegan opinion)!

Well in terms of Willow/Tara being veg, in Season Six there is this conversation in After Life:

Tara - Well I don't know about everybody else, but I would love some chicken.
Giles - As would I...
Dawn - I'll take a drumstick
WIllow - I'm a breast gal myself, but then again, you knew that.

But that's only silly Joss' Buffyverse. I personally think Tara's definately a vegetarian, I just can't see her wanting to touch animals. Willow...hmm maybe. She'd definitely defend Tara when the other scoobies make comments.

As for recipes, I have plenty! I can email some to you if u like...do u want vegan or veg recipes mainly?

To quote my fellow vegetarian (vegan, actually) friend from high school, Asa,: "Vegetarians rock!" :grin . Am I could totally see Tara as a vegetarian of some sort. Willow? Not so much, but she'd definetly support Tara in it, and do all kinds of research, IMO

Ok, you might all hate me, but I'm not too sure that Tara's a vegetarian. Not that I think that she's a hearty meat eater, but wearing leather jackets? I don't think that if she were disgusted by the killing of animals, she would be wearing leather.

However, that doesn't mean that I think that she's NOT a vegetarian. I just wanted to point out that the evidence isn't too clear, imho.

(BTW, while I am not a vegetarian, I used to be one, and I don't wear leather when I can avoid it.)

I gotta agree with you Eli. I can't see Tara sitting down to a slab of ribs or anything, but I'd have to say the leather thing is an excellent point.

Okay, about the leather thing. This is a hotly debated issue among vegetarians. Some are of the opinion that it's perfectly okay since no animals are being killed solely for their skins. Others take the position that the sale of the skins puts money into the pockets of the meat companies and/or slaughterhouses.

Furthermore, people are vegetarians for a wide range of reasons, not all of them ethical or political. Some just don't eat meat because they don't like it, or because they feel it's not healthy. These people wouldn't be likely to have issues with leather.

And, lastly, while I realize that Tara's meat-eating is a well-established fact in the canon, I have to say that Tara as [i:acfd7f8da1] I[/i:acfd7f8da1] see her is a vegetarian.

Go, tofu!

While I agree that it is easy to "see" Tara as vegetarian, I have to say mine is not. Because mine LOVES chicken casserole. In fact she wants to be it.

I did not mean to imply that because she wore leather, she could not be a vegetarian, Holley. Sorry if that's how it came off. I was replying to someone saying that Tara would find it hard to touch meat. I was merely wondering if she found it hard to touch meat, how it was not hard to touch leather.

I don't know if that's what I'm trying to say, either.
It's so hard for me to communicate. I'd like to say today, but that would imply only today, which is, as you know, absolutely not true.

And you're right, I can't make statements about how people should feel about stuff. Because really, people should feel about stuff however they feel about it. Just because I think that the two are mutually exclusive, doesn't mean that it is.

Also, though, I want to say that I am glad that I said what I said, because it's another reminder to myself that what makes sense to me doesn't make sense, and doesn't need to make sense, to others.

Anyway, I should stop babbling. But this is the daily thread, and so this is the place for it, if there is a place for it.

I get it, Eli, I do. But it just seemed like the proper place to mention that leather isn't as clear cut an issue for vegetarians as meat or fur.

I think vegetarians are strong people. I mean, live without meat? I couldn't. Just the thought gives me shivers .. I love meat, and chocolate.. and all that yummy stuff, mmm. I am allergic to all kinds of nuts recently and to stay away from nuts is hard enough already, I couldn't give up on meat also.

This must be how people feel who try to give up smoking. I am glad I never started. I don't know if I could ever stop. I am weak in that sense.

Now I'm assuming this is a typo on your behalf Xita, although it does explain a lot. I mean, if Willow was your girlfriend, wouldn't you swear off all other foods as well? ;)

Now I'm off to make myself a ham sandwich. I gave up meat for Lent once; almost killed me. Heh. I love my meat. Sorry.

I think Tara could be a vegetarian. I've been one for 11 years now and I broke down and got a pair of black leather pants last year, and my best friend who is even more militant than me got a leather sofa. The thing with leather for me is that as a climber/mountaineer, leather is pretty much the only option for certain types of boots. I try to keep leather to a minimum. My last pair of Birks were the Jerry Garcia ones with the synth straps.

As for recipes, here is one of my favorites. It's pretty easy to make.

SPICEY MACARONI AND CHEESE

1 cup macaroni
1/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 onion, minced
4 oz Jalapeno Jack cheese, shredded
4 oz cheddar, shredded
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1-2 oz parmesan or romano, shredded

Preheat oven to 350. Boil the macaroni till al dente and drain. Meanwhile, saute the onion in either a little bit of olive oil, butter, or olive oil spray, depending on your preference, until the onion is soft, about 4-5 minutes. Add the flour and the cayenne all at once. Stir in the milk and heat for 2 minutes or so. Start adding he Jalapeno Jack and Cheddar to the milk a bit at a time until it is all melted in the sauce, remove from heat. Put the macaroni in a glass baking dish or similar, add the cheese sauce, and bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Pull out of the oven, top with the parmesan, and let stand for 10 minutes.

I vary the spice level, depending on my mood. The hottest I ever made it I used a full teaspoon of cayenne and added chopped up jalapeno peppers as well. But I like spicey; last weekend I made quesadillas with 2 habanero peppers. Boy, you have to be careful when you cut those up. I got careless and wiped my hand on my cheek and rubbed my eye, and for the next 6 hours I had a hot feeling there!

I'm vegetarian but I eat fish and don't mind leather! Of course, I've been vegetarian off and on for about 10 years now. I just don't eat meat because I don't so much like it, and a lot of meat these days has so much unnecessary crap (antibiotics, etc) fed to the animals that I don't really want to put stuff like that in my body.

And I happen to like tofu a lot, so it works out rather well for me :)

Hey! I since you all are on the subject of vegetarianism I have a question that I have been dying to know the answer to. I watched that movie "But I'm A Cheerleader" a while ago and I noticed that one of the characteristics of a gay person was being a vegetarian. Then I had a friend of mine tell me he thought I was a lesbian because, among other things, I too am a vegetarian. I am unsure of my preference as of yet, but am wondering where this vegetarian issue came from. Can anyone help me with that?

With my crummy digestive system - people ask me if I'm lactose intolerant and I reply that I'm [i:8a287aa538] everything[/i:8a287aa538] intolerant :shy - I basically eat whatever I can safely digest. In most cases, that means I'm a vegetarian, but there are times when I'll eat chicken or turkey or fish. No beef or pork, though - they have way too much fat in them.

I'll be on my way back to the vet in a few minutes. I have to take Eugenie in for another round of blood tests, to see how her kidneys are holding up with the home treatment I've been giving her. She's been slowly getting better all week. Her condition is still terminal, but I'm starting to hope the inevitable might be weeks or even months away, instead of days.

Have a great weekend, everybody! :bounce

Well I don't eat meat, but I do eat fish, so I'm not a proper vegetarian. I was when I was younger and idealistic. But I'm such a bad eater that my doctor kept giving out to me for not eating healthily.

Utp- But I'm a Cheerleader is a great movie. One of my faves, as for the classifications etc, well, everyone sterotypes I guess.

ok ok I guess in my wild fantasies I see Tara being Veg. Anyways we all know the double meat palace isn't "real meat" So there. Hehe. But yeah, I guess they are pretty much carnivors on the show. Hell even Buffy likes a good stake..er..Spike.....hehe.

Anyways, as we all know for a fact, vegetarians taste better ;)

I've been a vegetarian for a few years now, for ethical and health reasons...I haven't quite convinced myself to let go of the dairy, but I try to buy organic so at least I know that the cows aren't being pumped full of antibiotics and kept constantly pregnant to increase output.

You can check PETA's Cooking section for some recipe ideas at www.peta.org/liv/recipe.html

There's also a book called Laurel's Kitchen (can't remember all of the authors at the moment, but one of them is Laurel). It's an excellent book, get it. :)
