I've finally decided to write a Buffy fanfic...

...eventually. I might wait to see how the Season Six premiere plays out first, because the plotline's kind of dependent on if Willow uses a spell to bring Buffy back. Anyway, I have the general idea for the main plot, and the W/T subplot. Actually WRITING it will be the hard part, and I still might not do it, but...tell me what you think. (And if anybody knows the names of Tara's parents, let me know, 'cause otherwise I'll use the ones that I made up.)
"LOOSE ENDS"
A Buffy fanfic

PLOTLINE: When Willow does the spell to resurrect Buffy, her magic proves to have dire consequences. The spirits of the dead are called forth from the heavens, doomed to wander the earth in fear and agony...unless Buffy Summers is returned to the netherworld.

W/T SUBPLOT: Meanwhile, Tara learns of Willow's forays into the dark arts, and reveals the truth of her mother: Angela Maclay knew a Slayer when she was a teenager. (This is maybe two, three Slayers prior to Buffy's calling). The Slayer had been killed by a demon. Furious, Angela went down the road of the black arts to fight and kill the demon. But twenty years later, that magic came back to haunt her. The spell she'd used was so powerful that traces of it lingered on her body. It caused pain and death to those around her. John Maclay decided that Angela was a demon, and placed her in solitary confinement. With no one else around to affect with her "bad luck," the magical residue fed on Angela herself, draining her of her life force until she died - when Tara was only 17. Tara had been born with magic, but she'd vowed never to use anything other than white magics. She knows that if Willow continues to go down the path of black magic, she will eventually die from it - just like Tara's mother.

This is a great idea. I wouldn't wait for the season premier. After all, what's better than writing and reading fanfic to get through the long dry spell?

If you want to keep your story true to canon (the events of the series) then it only needs to accurately conform to what has happened prior to the time it's set in. Just make it clear at the beginning where (or when) it deviates from canon.

As for your plot, two suggestions: start 'in media res'- in the middle of things. Begin where there's a lot of dramatic tension, not with a lot of explanation. That makes the story more lively and draws the reader in. Second, have an ending in mind when you start. Don't be afraid to completely change it, of course, but if you have a point to write towards it helps in deciding what to keep in and what to cut.

Don't hesitate to write just part of the story and post it for feedback. If you'd like help with Beta reading or editing, email me. I'd be happy to make some suggestions. Good luck.

Well, I'm not a COMPLETE novice when it comes to writing - heh, trust me - but this is the first time I've ever thought of anything Buffy-related. I might still not do it. I've got too much other crap to write. But I'd like to. I've got a nifty little Dawn scene floating around in my skull.

Or maybe those are the cobwebs.

This definitely looks good, and I don't think you need to wait for the season premiere either. The main thrust of the story would seem to be an exploration of Tara's family's past which is great (evn though you call it a subplot). The contemporary stuff more sort of "padding" around that (just as the episodes are structered afterall setting an issue or topic within the monster of the week formula.) And as others have said if you start in the middle of the action you needn't actually write the scene in which Willow uses the magic - and thus avoid contradiction by canon in what 54 days now.
Personally, and this is just personal, I love to read fics that are written about a season before it starts - right up until it is proved non-canon (though some have been remarkably good guesses) when they become (just to me) redundant, even if well written. But this has so much potential that it could easily be made "future proof." Go for it.

Personally, I think that's a really good idea for a story. Good luck! And I look forward to reading it!
