"Ripper" The GILES SPIN-OFF...?!

Postby discostar » Wed Oct 17, 2001 11:02 am

I don't know if this was brought up here or not so i'm just going to toss it out there (please be gentle):

On the GLA, they have been talking of a Giles Spin-off called "Ripper". It may or may not air in the US. Anyway, a member of the GLA list "Matt" posted this article he found:

[quote]From Cinescape ateline: Tuesday, July 24, 2001

By: News Editor
Source: SCIFI.COM

While appearing at last week's San Diego Comic-Con International, Joss Whedon spoke of his BBC produced BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER spin-off series which would star Anthony Stewart Head. Whedon told the assemblage of fans that the program would be in the vein of "classic English ghost stories."

It will also focus on the theme of loneliness, as Whedon explains, saying, "I think of it as, the people who live there, it's all very isolated, and the demons that they've brought upon themselves ... that are most important in their lives. [Giles] himself has been gone for many years. He was surrounded by a ... de facto family that he no longer has. And [he is] sort of picking up his life all alone, and then getting involved in sort of the underbelly of other people's lives, and sort of finding out about them. Loneliness is what I think of. It may not be the theme so much as the emotional intent of the series, but that's what really attracts me to it the most

This is all the information I can dig up, other than the name of the show is Ripper (based on Giles' nickname).

Take care!
-Matt[quote]

If this did come to pass, i don't think theres really a network that wouldn't want to air it. I always thought a W/T spin-off would rock. Two Witchy-lesbos fighting evil? good times.

I know we had another giles' thread, but I can't find it.

Anyway someone at the cross and stake posted this:

Just thought everyone would like to know that ASH has confirmed in a radio interview in the UK this week that the BBC have green-lit the Giles spin-off to be called RIPPER.
Filming is set to start next March or April with the pilot written and directed by Joss.
Other Buffy writers will be penning the other scripts.
ASH said that Buffy cast members Amber Benson and Alyson Hannigan and AtS Alexis Denisof are slated to appear as guests.
Robin Sachs ( Ethan Rayne )has also expressed an interest.

Woo-hoo to that!

I have other comments, but I'll direct them to the Spoiler thread.

It would be neat to see them vacationing in England and dropping in on Giles.

Aly is likely to appear with Alexis I'm not sure about Amber though.

It would be great if Willow and Tara were together having a vacation in England...Tara so loves the English.

If the dates quoted are anything like what actually happens after whatever problems there are occur then that might solve what I saw as a problem with this. BBC is not likely to start screening Buffy S6 until August/Sept 2002 whilst the US willbe just about to start S7 then, which would have made the continuity with Ripper problematic as the Beeb are unlikely to sell their own program to Sky and US before showing it themselves. Thought direct linkage is likely to be avoided I would think that what you will see instead might be that the BBC gets in synch with itself (should the rumoured mini-series emerge from the pilot) and that the US will have to suffer the time-difference. Either that or Ripper will sit "out of time" and visiting characters will not be "absent" from Buffy or Angel or mention be made of it in those series.

Just a humble few thoughts which Joss will no doubt prove wrong with a typical burst of genius.

I got a woman, calling love hate
We made a vow, we'd always be friends
But how could we know that promises end

"Ripper" The GILES SPIN-OFF...?!

Postby tommo » Wed Mar 13, 2002 11:51 pm

As far as I can tell from the current issue of the Buffy magazine, this programme is still an idea in progress. Episodes have been written by some of the established writers on the show, but as far as I know, filming hasn't begun. Yet.

Since filming hasn't even begun yet, we shouldn't expect to see this for a long while, huh? and is it going to play on the BBC America? because I think I have that on digital cable.

I'm not sure, but i think the article i read it from said that, even though it is just an idea right now, that there wasnt any plans for local US stations to pick it up. It sort of implied in my mind that it was some sort of BBC exclusive; but it'd probably be on BBC america two, hopefully right after Grahm Norton. :-D but i cant really see why it wouldnt be on US tv. *shrug*

PS ...i havnt een here in such a long time. (^_^)

There was a tiny snippet of a comment in last months SFX,I think, about Ripper from Marti. It was literally about 2 sentences long so there is no reason to dig it out for a full quote - nor was it cryptic but essentially Marti was saying that the production of Firefly might delay Ripper.

That was it... maybe not such a bad thing as you could well see S7 completed before Ripper made it to air allowing it to be a continuation rather than in parallel to Buffy - avoiding the UK/US timelag problem suffered by the dear old Beeb (see comments above in this thread.) The important thing is that Ripper is not "dead"... just on extended hold I would guess - though I still don't know what the BBC position is? last I heard they were still in discussions...
