It's E.T. Phone Home Friday, MKF!

Postby Pixie » Fri Mar 22, 2002 12:37 am

I am so excited about the rerelease of E.T. in the U.S. tonight! This was one of the big movies of my childhood, since when it came out I was still just young enough to love it. "Eeeeliot..." (heehee) So here's the question for the day:

What do you think were the important or most-loved movies of Willow and Tara's childhood and teen years? What were yours? (yeah, I know, I'm sure we'll end up showing our generation gaps, but that's part of the fun!)

Willow: Charlie Brown Christmas
Tara: I'm not sure....maybe the French movie "The Red Balloon".

Pixie: Sound of Music, Star Wars trilogy, The Breakfast Club (I was in high school when that came out and my friends and I used to quote whole scenes verbatim.)

Happy Friday!!!

Didn't they change bits of ET to make it less violent? Like changed the guns that the roadblock cops were holding and digitally removing them and changing them into walkie-talkies.

Big movies from my childhood/adolescence: My dad used to take me to the movies with him, he took me to see Return of the Jedi and Romancing the Stone, when I was 4 or 5 or so. Not sure Romancing the Stone is an appropriate movie for a 5 year old I remember seeing ET in the theater, it was the first movie my mom took my brother to. I think he was 3. The biggest movie from my teenage years was Newsies. I had a crush on just about every boy in that movie. I could recite that entire movie verbatim at one point. I knew all the songs (still do - every once in awhile I listen to the soundtrack).

I'm not really sure what Willow and Tara's movies would be ...

Hmmm ... my ex-boyfriend (my last boyfriend) just IMed me, he's drunk. He just broke up with his girlfriend of 3 years (they started dating about 4 months after he and I broke off our 2 1/2 year relationship). I wonder how much of what he's telling me now he'll still remember in the morning ... Silly boys.

Happy Friday!

Yes they are now digitally flailing around like dying fish on land...seriously though they look silly.

I suppose we will at least get to see the Harrison Ford / frog shot?

Important films movies of my childhood, younger years...

Too many to remember, but Terminator, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Buckaroo Banzai, Big Trouble In Little China, Witches of Eastwick, Lost Boys, Knightriders...

just to name a few.

Man, I'm so excited about this rerelease! This is my movie! My initials are 'E.T.' and I was born the same year and month it came out (born five days after it's release). And this is one of my favorite movies! I'm going later today to see it.

Cool thread Pixie.
yes, I think we're in the same generation, ET is definitely up there along with Star Wars and all the John Hughes movies before he did the Home Alone crap.

Now, I guess Tara may like something like Steel Magnolias and Willow would go for Thelma & Louise

Oooh, good topic. My folks never really took me to see the movies. Once they dragged me along so that they would have an excuse to see Home Alone. Evil people. But there was an abundance of video rentals in my childhood.

Movie of my childhood has got to be Raising Arizona. I think I was eight when I saw it and I have never laughed that much at anything in my entire life. Also the entire Indiana Jones series, I still love them.

As for our girls. I think Tara would be into some Noir so I'll go for The Third Man. As for Willow, The Matrix.

What a cool question! I can't wait to see E.T. again, I always sob my heart out at the end! I think Willow would have loved anything Disney as a kid, and Tara, well I'm not sure her family would have done the film thing so much, she probobly liked something terribly obscure that she saw on TV.

For me Star Wars, saw it in '77 when I was five, I remember the queue went around the entire building, they were also showing Grease. I remember my Mum saying that if we couldn't get in to see Star Wars, we'd go and see Grease. I SOOOOOO did not want to see Grease, luckily we didn't have to. I often think that if I had seen Grease as a child, things might be so different now! I was obsessed with Star Wars ever since then and anything to do with George Lucas. Raiders of The Lost Ark was also a huge favourite, Clash of The Titans and Jason and The Argonauts. Ok I think I'll shut up now!

Am I the only one that found E.T. to be depressing? I remember crying for days after that movie... but then, I was a very sensitive kid.

Movies from my childhood include "The Goonies", "Breakfast Club", "The Burbs", "A Christmas Story". I know there's more, but it's too late (or early) to think of them. Happy Friday, everyone!

Willow: "She's like this cleavagey slutbomb walking around going 'Ooh. Check me out, I'm wicked cool. I'm five by five.'"
Tara: "Five by five? Five what by five what?"
Willow: "See, that's the thing. No one knows."

We know Tara's a Charles Laughton fan. I reckon she was into 'Night Of The Hunter'. Quite right too

My childhood movies were all the 'Naked Gun' films and 'Jason And The Argonauts'. Neither me nor any of my friends had seen 'Robocop', but we all talked enthusiastically about how great it was in the playground. Ah, youth.

Maybe it was because of my age at the time (early '30s), but I really wasn't all that impressed with "E.T." when it first came out.

One of the things that struck me most about it (and other people noticed it too) is the remarkable similarity of the story to the life of Jesus! Think about it:
1. A wise and mysterious figure descends to earth from the heavens where

2. He performs many signs and wonders, including "miraculous" cures, causing him to

3. Gather a group of followers around him. This prompts

4. his enemies to pursue, torture, and eventually kill him. However,

5. He rises from the dead, and before returning to his home in the heavens, promises his followers that he will "be with them always" (remember "I'll be right here"?)

Coincidence? I think not!

The Karate Kid was one of my favs...along with Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, The Goonies, Star Wars...actually I didn't appreciate the John Hughes movies until a little later b/c I was born in '78 so I was like 8 when they first came out. I'm not really sure what Willow or Tara would like.

I don't know, but it's easy for me to picture little Willow running around in the house, singing Disney songs. I think she was quite a Disney-girl...a little dreamer!!
As for Tara, I really don't know. Perhaps ET, a sweet little movie about a person who is different from everybody...(much like herself)!

Me? I've always been a huge fan of Star Wars, especially the Empire strikes back!! I don't like the new one (no. 1), but I hope that no. 2 will be better!!

Man E.T. is coming out again. Does this ever make me feel old. The thing about it that really makes me feel old is I have friends who say, "Man, I wasn't even born yet when that movie came out." Gez, thanks for that. I actually have a little story about the first time I went to see this movie. I was five and the only other movie I had gone to see, that I can remember, was Annie. It started out good but about half way through the movie I started crying, not just boo hoo crying but oh my God it's the end of the world crying. I got down on the theater floor, they were actually clean back then, and cried the rest of the movie. I remember my older brother kicking me and everyone staring at me. Maybe this time I can go see the movie and actually see it this time.

Have a great Friday Kitties!

This is a fun thread! I am having trouble thinking what movies I saw in the theatre when I was young. I was to young to see the Star Wars trilogy when it was first released (I was alive when Jedi came out but not too old.) but I had all the videos and watched them constantly. Other than that, Probably all of the Disney movies like Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. I also loved The Next Karate Kid with Hillary Swank.
I can see Willow liking some typicall 80s movies like Sixteen Candles or Pretty in Pink.
Tara I think would probably like something obscure that no one else had ever heard of.

I think W/T probably liked E.T. too,and of course the wiz as well.

Hm. Actually, I never much cared for E.T. which kinda makes me un-American or something.

As for seminal movies from my adolescence (and will this ever date me) some of my early film experiences include H.R.Puff-N-Stuff and The Andromeda Strain. Plus all those Hammer vampire movies shown in the afternoon.

I've a suspicion that Willow loved Wargames while Tara kinda went to town (secretly) over the made-for-tv flick The People.

I feel odd saying this, but ET was never a big part of my childhood. I probably didn't even see it until I was 6 or 7 and that was a good five years after the movie came out. But I never remembering being enthralled with it; not the other people are, anyway.

A lot of the movies, I remember fondly from my youth I saw years after they were released on late night cable, i.e. Breakfast Club, Clue, Weird Science, etc.

edited to add: great, so now I'm unamerican. j/k Zahir.

I'm not sure that is appropriate for a thread of it's own so I thought I'd post it here. Good news for all the Scottish ladies out there.

This is on the BBC teletext service.

LANDMARK RULING ON RAPE FROM JUDGES

A court has agreed that Scotland's rape laws should be changed to make it illegal for a man to have sex with a woman without her consent.

A panel of seven judges ruled in favour of the move, which brings Scots law on rape into line with English law.

The landmark ruling was sought by the Lord Advocate, Colin Boyd QC.

He intervened after another judge dismissed a case against a man because there was no evidence that he used force against his alleged victim.

__________________________

I remember this case and I remember being extremely pissed off about it. At least we got a positive outcome this time. Not that it helps the poor woman in the slightest.

I'm afraid I'm with Zahir on this. I disliked ET with a passion. I suppose its my age.

I was brought up on Disney features like the Castaways, and 'gritty' social dramas like 'Tiger Bay' and 'Whistle down the Wind' [and yes, I did have a crush on Hayley Mills ]

Well, my movies are really silly movies: besides 'E.T'. and 'Breakfast Club', I really loved 'Howard, the Duck'(I had a major crush on Lea Thompson...) and 'Weird Science', with Kelly LeBrock.

And let's not forget 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' and 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'. Yes, those were the days...

Wow...what a great thread. Brings back some memories.

My faves as a young kid were Disney movies but as I got to my high school days I was definitely addicted to the Brat Pack and bad 80's movies. The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, About Last Night, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, The Karate Kid I & II, Dirty Dancing... the list goes on and on.

I think Willow's faves would have been Wargames (which Xander made her watch and she fell in love with) and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

As for Tara, perhaps her mom showed her the animated The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and The Hobbit when she was young. For some reason I see her as being disturbed by the idea of the Muppets.

I think both of them probably saw and loved The Last Unicorn and The Care Bear Movie.

Ok...enough babbling from me.

I've never seen ET and I'll be 24 in two days, my wife says that is un-american. I suspect Tara would like something noone else has ever heard of but I bet she could get into the brat-pack via Willows introduction. The first movie I really remember seeing was The Goonies and whatever Disney movies came out at the time. My mom raised on on old black n whites and musicals. Consequently my favorite movie is Singin' In the Rain.

Hmmm...when I was a kid I was obsessed with musicals. (Okay, so maybe I still am ) My favorite was Sound of Music, but I also loved Newsies. My mother is obsessed with Disney movies, so I always loved those as a kid too. Star Wars I saw in late elementary school and loved them.

I see Willow liking Goonies and ET, and Tara liking more fantasy type movies. I agree with Princess Willow, she would hav loved The Last Unicorn.

Have a great rest of the day everyone!

I don't really remember the movies I went to see. I remember Batman with Michael Keaton because my parents made me go and I ended up liking it. Oh, and Jurrasic Park because I went with 26 other people at a party. That was pretty fun. But I loved to rent the Princess Bride and The Goonies.

I think Willow would have rented The Goonies too since her and Xander and Buffy were considered weird and dorky.

Tara would have rented The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love or whatever the real title is and watched it in secret.

wossit? A Pixie thread? Well, well, well... Think I'll just join right in. Don't mind if I do...
When I was a kid.... I liked E.T. and seem to remember seeing it in the theater, though I was very young. I distinctly remember seeing the second Star Wars movie in the theater, because my dad bought me a pack of those little gummy mound-shaped things, and I thought they looked like Jabba the Hut.
I was obsessed with Star Wars as a kid. I also liked, and still like, anything with snoopy.
As a teenager? Antonia's line (amazing), When Night is Falling.... anything with gay people in it.....(well, not anything) I also watched Hamlet so much that I think I memorized it. [zefferelli version] My sister used to drag me to rocky horror every week when i was thirteen. I always watch a lot of B movies when "bonding" with my dad..
More recently.... Mad Max trilogy, Mindwalk, Kafka, Stalker [long and overly cerebral tarkovsky film. but... wow.]

Willow and Tara? The Princess Bride.
I agree that Willow would probably go for some real silly stuff, and Tara - artsy stuff and stuff that makes no sense to most people.
Sorry. that was long. But I can't help it. what a fun topic!

I am having a less cranky day today. Of course it is a big school day. The day before vacation big easter day, so lots of chocolate eggs and basket making. Plus one of the kids had a birthday and mom brought cake and ice cream. So it is sugar overload for all the kids.

And now that was my last day of work! I get a whole week off. I am going to need the time off! sigh.
