Ask ANY Question Stress Free. (But Please Read the First Pos

Postby Hugin » Tue Mar 19, 2002 5:47 am

Howdy. This thread has been created as a hopefully low stress, judgement-free place for Kittens (old or new) to ask any question they might have. It doesn't matter if you're worried the question is silly or embarassing or an old topic, all that is okay here.

Here are the (yeah, I can hear the groans) guidelines, please read them before you dive in:

1. The question can be on anything "On-Topic" for this board, as specified in the FAQ: BTVS, Willow/Tara, Alyson, Amber, items of concern to the extended queer community, unique Kitten Board community related questions, etc. We probably can't help you with that weird rattle coming from your car.

2. Read the FAQ. It's very possible your question/answer is already there. If it is, take that as the "Official" answer. If it's made it to the FAQ, it's probably been discussed more than you can imagine and isn't going to change as far as the board is concerned. *cough*Item 19*cough*

3. Anyone who thinks they have a good, helpful answer to a question can answer. Feel free to link to other existing threads or other sites if you think the information being sought is laid out well elsewhere. The mods may encourage some questions to break out into thier own threads, this is a good thing.

4. This isn't really an extended discussion thread, some questions may not "fit" in here. But it does no harm to start here. Let's give everyone the benefit of the doubt and do the best we can to come up with positive answers/solutions.

5. No Sarcasm. No Crankiness. Not in the questions, not in the answers. That's really important. Things can be misinterpreted very easily. The Mods hope Kittens will help each other in this thread, and we'll be pretty pro-active about keeping it extra nice in here. If a question seems very offensive or a troll, contact the mods and we'll check it out.

Alright. Grab a chair, grab a cookie, and don't be afraid to speak up.

yes, so, i would just like to ask a question.

for season six buffy and season three angel, does the running order go buffy angel buffy angel

or does it go angel buffy angel buffy

or are they simultaneous?

the reason i ask is that, in australia at least, angel started a week before buffy, although it was still on a tuesday night, and buffy was on the monday.

weird.

thankyou for any help you can give.

Buffy and Angel are not tied together anymore in any way, I believe... Because Buffy moved to UPN and Angel stayed on WB they don't have crossovers or anything anymore.
So, watching order doesn't matter much anymore (if I'm wrong, you US kittens know best! Please, tell if I'm wrong!)

here in the States the shows are on different networks, different days and different times!

Angel is on the WB at 9 pm (eastern standard time) on Monday.

Buffy is on UPN at 8 pm (eastern standard time) on Tuesday.

Hope this helps.

Yes, starting with season 6, Buffy switched networks (while Angel didn't) and they are no longer 'in sync' like they were the 2 years previously.

There's very little storyline crossover this season anyway, they've really become their own shows.quote:

I hope this answer makes sense, I'm trying to answer without mentioning any episode content as I don't know how far Aus. viewers are atm.

The order in which to watch seasons 6 and 3 of Buffy/Angel respectively sort of depends on whether you watch "Bargaining Parts 1 & 2" together or not.

US and UK fans should understand how I am concluding this pattern.

It is awkaward to grasp due to the first three episodes of Buffy follwing straight on from each other (Bargaining 1 - Bargaining 2 - Afterlife) where the first three episodes of Angel are not continuous in the same respect.

If Angel began first in Aus, and you had Bargaining as two separate episodes, then you should sort of get all the episodes in the correct order:

A1
B1
A2
B2
A3
B3
A4
B4
A5
B5

If you are watching both parts of "Bargaining" together (as in the US and UK) then you should watch the Angel episodes as follows:

A1
A2
A3
B1&B2
B3
A4
B4
A5
B5

This pattern seems more accurate as B3 "Afterlife" carries straight on from the end of "Bargaining Part 2".

Each way will set the timelines up right.

Obvioulsy with Ats and BtVS on different networks in the US this pattern did not occur there, and would have been difficult with the two part season premiere.

I hope that makes sense!

I noticed that lately some people found it neccesary to post their posts in all capital letters. I don't know how other people feel about this, but it kinda bothers me.

Is there anyone who can do anything about this somehow? Or maybe put this in with the kittenboard-rules?

Thanks!!!

If people do so more than once the mods will make a comment about it, same thing if people change the fonts of their entire post, it is fine to so to stress something or on special occasions, but not every post. The same goes for posting a thread title in all caps. Don't do it, it looks like shouting. Thread titles are easily changed however.

We should probably clarify that this thread isn't exactly a complaints thread. More of an informative thread. If there's an issue you think needs attention, it's probably best to mail one of the mods.

However, I can give you sort of an answer. The Kitten has never had formal guidelines as to grammar and spelling. Proper punctuation, accurate spelling, minimal use of net-contractions (C for See, U for You, 4 for..well, For) etc, and not posting in all caps (which is generally considered to be equivalent to yelling) are all appreciated, but they've never been required. We hope that folks will do the best they can, and recognize that the more accurately and clearly they write, the better they'll get thier ideas across.

We also recognize that English is not the first or main language for a goodly number of the folks here, we know foreign Kitties are doing thier best. (If I tried to post to a German or Dutch or Spanish language posting board...yikes)

If someone consistently posts in all caps, I think it's okay to politely remind them about the "yelling" thing, that's a pretty standard piece of netiquette by now. And if they persist, a moderator can step in to ask them to turn it down a bit. But in general, if you find a random post grammatically difficult or annoying to read, you're probably better off skipping it than getting into conflict about it.

(which is the lesson to folks: If your posts are hard or weird to read, folks will tend to go all cross eyed and skip them.)

I read this board more often and more in depth than any other board as I feel that we are all coming from the same direction. As this is a W/T board most of the topics (rightly) centre around them, but I was wondering if there if a special thread where I/we could discuss BTVS in general, whether in a spoiler capacity or not.

I value the opinions of the posters on this board more than any other, on other ones I often feel like I am struggling against the bias. If there isn't a place for general BTVS discussion on this board, can anyone recommend a friendly board with a healthy W/T following?

Thanks, Kate

Well, it may not be exactly what you had in mind, but I've come to depend on the episode discussions that spring up (each in their own thread) for each new Buffy. They provide wonderful general discourse about the show, and while they are definitely W/T centred, the kitties have such lovely engaging thoughts that all kinds of discussion goes on.

One caveat would be to be very careful how you word posts about certain subjects, especially Spike-related ones (I have learned this the hard way ), and to read carefully over anything you write that might be construed as critical of Willow or Tara. The people here have made a life of defending Willow and Tara, that's why this board is here, after all, and they've heard every criticism you can imagine of Willow, Tara and their actions, so they do get a bit defensive at times (I have also been learning this very slowly, as I was unaware there was so much W/T bashing idiocy out there).

That said, this is the only Buffy community I've ever really wanted to throw myself into, and the discourse is food for my mind and heart. I don't know if there will be episode discussions while repeats air, but definitely whenever a new one shows I race straight here to ruminate with the Kittens on all things Buffy (but especially W/T).

You could go to the www.atpobtvs.com - board. It´s the only board I read other then the kitten board. The people are not as commited W/T-fans as those here, but I have yet to see one bashing them or saying something I didn´t like about them.
Also, there are great discussions there about BtVS and AtS, and some of the essays people post are really genius.

grifter - I LOVE the Philosophy page but for some reason didn't think of using their discussion board, I will go and read it!

SiWangMu - Yes I do like the episode threads but being British means I am only up to "Gone" and the threads are kind of redundant by this time. As you say, with the repeats airing in the US, they may get refreshed

Keep fighting the good fight!

I only started watching Buffy during season 5, so I don't know why Anya hates bunnies so much. There is constantly a reference to her hating them.

To my knowledge, they've never explained exactly why Anya hates and fears bunnies so much. I think the inexplicable wierdness of it is supposed to be part of the joke.

And Lost and Delerious is available on VHS and DVD, I just saw it at Amazon.com (much cheaper on DVD)

There's never been a complete explanation as to why Anya is afraid of bunnies. The first time it comes up is in the season 4 Halloween episode (fear itself), when she is told to dress up as something scary and arrives in a bunny suit. But it's pretty much just been a running gag since then without further explanation, unless you count her solo in Once More With Feeling:

ANYA: (shrieking a la Alanis Morissette)
Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes!
They've got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses!
And what's with all the carrots?
What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?
[playing air guitar]
Bunnies!
Bunnies!
It must be bunnies!

Fireworks go off all around her, then the smoke clears away. The others continue simply staring.

ANYA: (back to original melody)
Or maybe midgets.

OK - I'll bite. Here is a question that has been bothering me ever since the ep aired: In "Afterlife" Anya is trying to wake Xander up to play a word game with her. She asks:

" Xander? You awake? I'm going to describe an adjective with accurate but misleading clues, and then you have to guess it."

What is she talking about here? Is there a word game that I am either too old, too young, or too terminally pop culture impaired to know about?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Ann Marie

Edited to add: Thanks Under Her Spell! If there is no such game it just sort of reinforces my idea that Jane was telling us, very early in the season, that it would be a weird year.

I find ordering them online has merits, especially if you don't live in the US. Try Things From Another World (www.tfaw.com). They're about 3$ each.

A question of my own now... I'm feeling utterly stupid...

Each level of posting has its cute little name from different Willow/Tara dialogues. But I couldn't fin the reference to "Big Pineapple". Did I just misread the transcripts or is there some... other meaning?

Big Pineapple comes from Listening To Fear when Willow and Tara are gazing at the stars on a rooftop. It's an incredibly cute scene, as Tara begins making up all these silly names for constellations to cheer Willow up. It was just so touching to watch how Tara tried to comfort Willow and distract her.

Morphine - the "Big Pineapple" reference is from the episode with the quellor demon from outer space - season 5, "Listening To Fear". During the teaser of the ep, Willow and Tara are lying on a blanket on the roof of their dorm, looking at the stars. Willow starts pointing out constellations, and Tara replies that she never knoew the names of them, so she always made up her own. The "big pineapple" is one of Tara's constellations. Some of the other ones are "L'il Pile of Crackers", and "Short Man Looking Uncomfortable".

No need to feel stupid,it's a good question. The Big Pineapple reference comes from Listening to Fear, Season 5. Here's the scene:
WILLOW: You know what's weird?
TARA: Japanese commercials are weird.
WILLOW: Yes. And also, you know some of the stars we're looking at ... don't even exist any more? In the time that it takes for their light to reach us, they've died. Exploded. (Tara turns her head to look at Willow) Poof.
TARA: Were, um ... were things rough at the hospital?

Willow frowns and shrugs.

WILLOW: You know, I used to love to look up at them when I was little. They're supposed to make you feel all insignificant, but ... they made me feel like ... like I was in space ... part of the stars. (points) There's ... Canis Minor ... and ... (points) and Cassiopeia.
TARA: (smiles, points) And the big pineapple.
Willow frowns.
WILLOW: Hmm. You know, I'm not sure I remember that one.
TARA: Oh, it's, it's a major one. (points) See those three bright stars right over there?

Willow moves over to put her head on Tara's shoulder and look along Tara's pointing arm. Shot of the starry sky with Tara's finger pointing.
WILLOW: Yeah.
TARA: And see those stars along there? (Shot of the stars) That's the bottom of the pineapple.
WILLOW: It's big.
TARA: Hence the name. (pause) The real ones never made sense to me, I ... sort of have my own.
WILLOW: Teach me.
TARA: (points) See those stars over there? "Short man looking uncomfortable."
They both giggle.
TARA: Uh... (points) "Moose getting a sponge bath." Umm... "little pile o'crackers." (Willow frowns) Tha-that was a bit of a stretch. (They both laugh) You do it. What would you call ... mm, that one? (points)
WILLOW: Hmm, let's see.

Hope that helps!

Amy

*edited to say: Boy, you guys are fast! Oh well, it's such a great scene, maybe I'll leave the direct transcript up for eye candy
