First of all, yes, Utena is a GREAT anime. I recommend it highly.
But it should be pointed out that Sailor Moon was written by Naoko Takeuchi. Utena was written by Chiho Saito. Both, however, were directed by Mr. Kunihiko Ikuhara. And even then, only the S season of Sailor Moon was directed by him. 'Twas the best season, IMO.
Second thing worth noting: Utena and Anshi are not a lesbian couple in context with the Utena manga OR anime show. They are friends. Their relationship is very subtextual but it never goes beyond that. Utena's always fighting to unchain the shackles that bind Anshi because well, one, she's very princely and, two, she wants Anshi to be happy.
The only lesbian character in Shoujo Kakumei Utena is Juri.
However, in the Utena movie the Utena/Anshi relationship takes a little turn past the subtextual when...

uhhh no. Actually... they KISS. That's it. Just a kiss. Yes, I understand they're naked but they're naked to symbolize the starting of life. It's their rebirth into the world.
They're also kissing on a motorcycle type contraption. There are two wheels and a motor. Not exactly a skateboard.
