OT - The Official Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament Thread

Postby BBOvenGuy » Sun Mar 03, 2002 8:03 pm

We had a lot of fun following the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament here at the Kitten last year. Yeah, I know the pairings haven't been announced yet, but I thought I'd get the thread started anyway. I have a good reason:

Vanderbilt Commodores - 2002 SEC Champions

They didn't even have to play the much-hated Tennessee Vols to do it, either. UT was knocked off in the semi-finals by LSU, and tonight Vanderbilt beat LSU by a score of 63-48.

(Okay, a bit of background for those of you who weren't around last year: When I was at Vanderbilt in the mid-80s, I did some photography work for the Women's Athletic Department, shooting game action pics for their recruiting brochures. Thus I figure the Vanderbilt Women's Basketball team is the closest thing I have to "my old team." )

The latest and greatest on tournament developments can be found at ESPN.

So who will you be cheering on this year?

Well, I could have mentioned that the name of Vanderbilt's student newspaper is The Vanderbilt Hustler. I got a lot of funny looks explaining that one...

I am a huge Uconn Huskie fan, and feel this is the year they will go undefeated and win it all. To me they have the best starting five players in college basketball, and with hopefully no key injuries they could go down as one of the best teams in women's college basketball history.

Go ACC! Duke's number one!

I actually got to watch the SEC this weekend and, wow, I was impressed with Vandy! They really looked good. I then got to see the Stanford game and they looked tough, too.

Still I have to go for the ACC all the way!

Go Duke, go!

Go UConn Huskies! I remember watching on TV when they won their first championship a few years back (when I used to live in CT), those were the Rebecca Lobo years, they were just unstoppable. I still hate the Tennessee Lady Vols from back then!

And go UC Berkeley over in the men's bracket!!

Anybody know how the Arizona State women's team is doing? I saw they were having a banner year at 1 point, but it's hard to get their scores here in Chicago.

I have been a Vandy fan for a long time now and I went all the way to Memphis to watch them beat Tennessee last year in the semis of the SEC. It was amazing there was all this orange and one little section of black in the stadium. We had to move to a different seat because these guys were insulting Vandy..lol. In fact I am proudly wearing my Vandy women's b-ball shirt at this moment. I think that this is their year if Jillian Danker is hot behind the arc and they can keep little Mc and Chantele Anderson healthy throughout the tourny then they have a shot at winning the whole kit and kaboodle. I don't want a repeat of the Stanford vs Old Dominion fiasco fo a few years ago.

The tournament pairings have been announced. You can get the bracket in printable form here:

http://espn.go.com/i/ncw/ncaatourney02/ ... racket.gif

The good news for me is that Vanderbilt is the #1 seed in the Midwest!!!

The bad news is that Tennessee is the #2 seed in the Midwest.

Other #1's and #2's are:

East: #1 Duke, #2 Baylor
Mideast: #1 UConn, #2 Purdue
West: #1 Oklahoma, #2 Stanford

Let the games begin!

Personally I think this will be the year UConn goes undefeated and wins it all. They have beaten every team they have played by double digits except for one team, in which they won by nine. If they don't suffer an injury to their starting five, I really feel confidant in their chances in winning it all. So go UConn!

YES!!!!!! THEY WON THE PAC-10!!!!!!!

Congrats to the men's squad for making the NIT, as well.

BTW, is it OK to post re: the men's bracket here or will that constitiute a separate thread?

Ok since there is all this Lady Vol hating going on (all in a good way) I have to speak up! GO LADY VOLS! 6 national championships, undefeated season and the number one reason they have a shot is Pat Summitt, a great coach who doesn't like to lose. Sorry BBOvenGuy I don't think Vandy will beat them again

I was getting ready to post the same thing, GhostWriter. I've gotta take up for my girls.

The Lady Vols have been working really hard since their SEC Tourney loss and I don't think they'll go down quietly. The team has a lot of heart and if they can just find some defense to go with it, I think we'll be ok. All Tennessee fans know the Lady Vols won't be losing if Kara Lawson and Pat Summitt have anything to say about it.

I've gotta admit BBOvenGuy, Chantelle Anderson is a heck of a player and I'd be more than happy to trade Michelle Snow for her.

Also, Duke is my 2nd fav team and if Tennessee can't do it, I'd love to see the Blue Devils stomp UConn. Sue Bird, Alana Beard, Monique Currie, Shaena Mosch...that'd be an awesome game to watch.

Peace.
Big Orange Country! GO VOLS!

Sorry Ghostwriter gonna have to stick with my Vandy gals. I was at the SEC game last year where they beat the lady vols, and let me tell you the stands were populated by much orange and little black and gold. If they can beat em when all the support is thrown the Vols way then they can beat em again.

I just think that it is Vandy's year. They have Jillian Danker to take care of hte behind the arc work and Little Ashley McElhiney, who is one of hte best point guards out there. Not to mention Chantelle Anderson in the paint. They have their strongest team yet, and I think it is strongenough to get them far.

Could be that they don't even meet in the tourney. Either one of them could be beat before they face each other. I am of the opinion that there are a couple of teams out there that can beat either. One of them being UCon.

Six championchips or no their streak has ended and so has their empire. As for Pat Summit, I was brought up by a father who despised her and though I don't go that far I do dislike some of her coaching methods. I Think that I will stick with Tara VanDeveer of Stanford for best coaching.

Still gonna pull for my Commodores and my Cardinal to go far this year. Yep, gonna stick with BBOvenGuy on this one.

Aria, if I can't have my Lady Vols win I would root for Vandy, they do have a good team there and as much as I do love the Vols in the last few years they have not been as tough as they used to be. I still have to root for them and win or lose I still think they are the best! As far as Tara Vandeveer I think we should ask Rebecca Lobo what she thinks about her! Go UT Lady Vols!

Know how ya feel there Ghostwriter I am a Stanford fan from way back and since the team hasn't been the same since Jamila Wideman and Kate Starbird graduated I pretty much have to stick with Vandy.

I like UCon, but I think that it is time that someone new wins this thing. Tenn and the Huskies have been dominating for so long that I am ready for something of the new.

I had the same problem with the NCAA softball world series. UCLA was winning loads till recently. Then we had Oklahoma and Arizona as the big guns.

Oh well *shakes her head* everything has gone to hell in the NCAA (esp with this LSU controversy). Think that I will stick with softball and tennis the sports that I actually play.

1st Round: How did your teams do?

My Lady Vols beat Gerogia State last night, 98-68. It was a great game to watch. Gwen Jackson played better than she has all year and Pat put the pressure we needed against LSU on GSU for the majority of the 2nd half. Her secret? Lawson, McDivitt, and Moore all playing at the same time, while trading our post players in and out so they wouldn't wear down. Snow didn't play at all and I honestly don't think she was missed.

We take on the Fightin' Irish Sunday night, which is also St. Patrick's Day. How weird is that?

Hope your teams played well and have a great tourney.

Peace.

Woo-hoo! Vanderbilt reaches the Sweet 16! The TV announcers said Vanderbilt held Arizona State to the third-lowest point total in the history of the tournament. Neither AZ State nor Oakland was able to reach 40 points.

Bring on North Carolina next!

Too bad about Purdue losing to Old Dominion, though. That was a heck of a game.

I'd have to second that sentiment. I'm very pro-ACC and was sorry to see Virginia and Clemson bumped off early. I'm hoping Duke will win it all, but the UNC game was very fun to watch, and I was thrilled they won it and get to go on to the Sweet Sixteen.

Go Duke!!!

Wow--I am from Tennessee, so was like whoa when I saw people dissing the Lady Vols. Of course, that's probably cause they almost make you sign a contract to like the Vols before you are born in Tennessee. (lol)
They are a really great team, but it's interesting to see other perspectives from people not lost in the Big Orange Sea that is Tennessee (you should be here for football season). I actually used to be a member of the Lady Vols student fan club. Mostly I was in it cause our mascot was cute, though. So Go Smokey, and may the best team win!

Holly,

I'm not cutting down nor do I hate the Vols! I respect them and what their coach has done over the DECADES! If the Vols are "hated" its because they are so and have been so good for over 20 years. The Vols are an example of what can happen in woman sports when you have both the administration and local community on board from the very start of your program. I was recruited (back in the dark ages) by the Vols but I use the term lightly, simply because for years before and directly after Title 9 woman's basketball programs weren't allowed to recruit players. The student had to send a tape (which at that time cost tons of money) to the basketball coach etc. When Title 9 was passed, UT looked at it as a blessing, instead of the curse that all the programs in the South did, and then acted accordingly. UT was one of the first teams to not only join the NCAA but to give their woman's sports program enough money to start recruiting players on a regional scale. UT has always seemed to have the support of the local community; just look at the attendance for homes games over the last 20 years! And finally, look at UT's graduation rate, their players graduate and then go on to be productive leaders and people! As I say, I respect UT!

UT is on top for one very good reason--they earned it--they worked hard. Nobody has the right to insult that program or what that University has done.

Go Duke! (oh, yeah, and I guess GO Carolina!)
