OK, here's a random question that's been bugging me...

What is Marti short for? Marti as in Marti Noxon, Co-Executive Producer of BUFFY, daughter of lesbian moms, and everyone's favorite punching bag this season. Martina? Martha? Anyone know?

Judy, I don't think it's short for anything. I had a student (a girl) named Marti, just Marti.

The best place to download Queer As Folk is off usenet on the group alt.binaries.multimedia.queer-as-folk

Aw, drats! I had a whole fantasy in my head where Marti's lesbian mom secretly had a crush on Martina Navritilova and named her baby after her before she came out herself. LOL. But it makes sense that Marti is short for Marti. For some reason it struck me as a shortened version of something else...

Okay here's a question. A while back there was a thread that everyone posted links to these weird and wonderful sites, one of which just had a photo of a car and a voice that made the noises of a racing car - anyone remember it? Well I had it bookmarked but when my computer screwed up I lost everything, including THAT link. Does anyone remember the address?

Postby SiWangMu » Wed Mar 20, 2002 12:59 am

No matter how many times I read back over the first post and the FAQ, I still worry that I'm going to be a bad poster for putting this up here. Ah, me and my issues. But anyway, it says any question and no judgement so here goes...

This is the discussion I tentatively mentioned on the daily thread a little while back that I wrote up and never did anything with. It still interests me... I probably should go back and rewrite it and make sure all my facts are correct and that the argument is logical at all, but I still had this, so now that I've hedged for this long here goes the cutting and the pasting.

(Okay, not quite yet. I realize some parts of this are strongly worded... they are not intended to be mean or harsh or much critical of anyone. I would also like to note that I am not looking to start a debate on the in-character questions of Spike's evilness/redemption/apology, as those debates are going to be founded in paradigms and belief structures that are both very personal and very specifically strict for most people. By which I mean to say, I'm not going there. Or not meaning to, in any case.)

Actually begin pasting here.
Okay, have just had a revelation about B/S and about Spike especially... I've recently started reading shooting scripts and it has just brought into glaring focus the fact that...

the writers have been really inconsistent with Spike's character this season. There had been something bugging me about the whole debate [over Spike and Spuffy], and now I think I know what it is. It's not the same as some idiot arguing that Willow and Tara don't love each other... that goes against every shred of evidence ever in the show, not to mention common sense. In this debate, every position you could ever take about Spike is backed up by some episodes and contradicted by others. For instance; the writers of Dead Things and Smashed clearly play up and emphasize cruelty in Spike, violence in Spike, the "Spike as abuser" angle. Rebecca Rand Kirshner, writer of Tabula Rasa and Hell's Bells, has portrayed innate nobility ("I'm a vampire with a soul" when mindwiped) or at the very least genuine affection and the bond of comrades, whereas Marti Noxon, mirroring the perspective she's given in interviews, portrays a merely and overwhelmingly sexual link between the two. Jane Espenson, in Afterlife and together with Doug Petrie in Flooded and Life Serial, portrays the banter-y/comrade-y relationship between B and S, complete with the level of mutual understanding that is sometimes mentioned. Spike tells Buffy (in Life Serial) he thinks she belongs better in the dark world he lives in, but with zero of the creepy evil vibes we see (feel) in Dead Things. It's all friendship/understanding, even if often botched by Spike, in these writers' early episodes of Season 6, the sexual tension just starting to creep in, much as it would for two normal human characters.

My point is that despite the fact that it's not very noticable (as I somehow believe anything James Marsters does onscreen) Spike's characterization wheels about considerably. I feel like it's the real cause of all the violent disagreement on the issue.

Perhaps if the writers agreed on the specifics of this relationship it would be easier for fans to do the same?

End pasted section.

So the question part is "does anyone else think the writing has been inconsistent or agree/disagree with me?"

I reeeeeeaaaaallly hope this isn't unwelcome or inappropriate. Please, please let me know if it is. Thanks as always for the wonderful Kitty community .

Let's remember this is not a discussion thread. Specific questions should be posted here. Not discussion. Episode discussions are the best place for general Buffy questions. By specific questions, we mean that one post should answer the question and then that should be enough to answer the question.

Okay! That's fine with me. I guess the unspoken under-question was "Where in the heck would this go, anyway?" which is well and truly answered. Thanks very much, and I now better understand this thread, as well. I just figured I would act on the part of the first post that mentioned that some posts wouldn't "fit in" here and that the mods would redirect as appropriate. Which you have, so all is well. In light of all my expressions of okayness, I am having the greatest urge to say "finey mcfine fine" right now ... dang. There I went. Which is to say, thanks, xita, and I'm going to get some sleep so as to be a coherent kitty in the future.

You should check on ebay for that poster. They usually have all things Buffy there.

*Edited by me*
Ok I just went to ebay looking for the eye's poster and all I could find was the eye's thing but it was for the musical ep. I also found some copies of the soundtrack from "Once More, with Feeling" on sale and was wondering if that's legal? I mean wouldn't ME like slap that guy with a copywrite lawsuit or something? Or am I just totally out of the whole legal loop and have no idea what I'm talking about?

Tara: "I understand. You have to be with the person you l-love."
Willow: "I am." – "New Moon Rising"

"But with Tara, I just know she likes Willow, and she already has one of those" – "Family"

"Honey, in case you didn’t hear me the first six-thousand times, no more teleportation spells." – "Crush"

Willow: "I figured, life goes by so fast, if you don’t write stuff down it just gets…lost."

Wonko, if you have Kazaa or Morpheus, just do a search on "Michelle Branch Goodbye to you". That's where I downloaded it. If it doesn't work, drop me a line, I'll email it to you.

You can find Morpheus at www.musiccity.com or Kazaa Lite (The one without spyware and publicity) at www.refosearch.tk .

Hey you! I have a question... Does anybody know if Amber has a nose job or something like plastic surgery?

Cordy,

As far as I know, she's never had any plastic surgery. If you look at the pictures of Amber from when she was younger, she looks very much like she does now. Those pics you found seem to be the exception, but I think it's a combination of makeup, lighting, and angles. So, no, Amber's beauty is all natural!!!

You know, ever since I first saw those pics, I have never believed they're of Amber. With all the other pics of Amber when she was younger, you can still easily see that it's her, but not with these two. I just don't see it, that girl does not look like Amber at all, we talked about it in chat one night, and no one there thought that those pics were of Amber either.

And if it is Amber, then like Sela said, it's a combination of makeup, lighting, and angles, and not a very good combination I'm afraid.

Concerning the photos above, I always thought someone might have made a mistake by saying that this was AB cause to me the girl looks somehow different from her, but I might be wrong.

But now I have a serious question:

Until today I was always entering the Kittenboard by www.fractalcore.com and there was on the left side the part called ""UBB Showcase" and under that line was written "The Kitten, The Witches and The Bad Wardrobe". That's how I entered, but right now the Kittenboard isn't there anymore (I almost got a heart attack!).
A friend of mine who had donloaded some parts of the spoilerthread sent me one site by E-mail and somehow I could enter the Kittenboard.
Now I would really like to know why there is this change I mentioned above and how you usually enter the Kittenboard?

In advance thanks.

If that's Amber, then she must have had her jaw increased in width and changed her eye colour at some point, too.

No doubt someone will tell me it really is Amber, now.

Robin, my guess is that the Kitten is just no longer Fractalcore 'featured site' (I can't see why, though! ). The url I give people for the board is froggyfrog.com/kitten, as that will also get you to the backup board, but I've got the main index bookmarked as well.

Since I don't follow too many Pens fics, I usually just enter on the Kitten Board's thread listing. I have the following bookmarked:
/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&number=74

Unfortunately, you don't get that funky ``New posts since your last visit'' red icon badnezz. To activate that, I always have to jump up one level higher and re-enter.

Hello! I'm a big W/T fan and I listen to "I'm Under Your Spell" at least once a day. My friends and I have been arguing over one line in the song for a month now. The line is "Surging like the sea ???????? you so helplessly. I watched the song on my tv with closed captioning and it said "wanting you so helplessly",then there's a web site and it says "brought to you.." and I personally thought it was "I'm holding you so helplessly". I was just wondering if anyone knows what she is actually saying.

Ok, I've read the FAQ, and I've tried to do this 3 or 4 times now and I can't get it right. If you just want to quote a portion of a post, like maybe a couple of sentences, how do you do it? Every time I try, I wind up quoting the entire post. Also, how do you bold the text of the item you want to quote?

Howdy Rosenberg. To make a word or phrase bold, put [ b ] around what you want to be bold [ / b ], but take out the spaces between the letter B and the left and right brackets I've put in here. Also, it's important that the / gets put in (left bracket, / B, right bracket, again no spaces) at the end, it "closes" or "ends" the bold command. "quote" works the same way, except instead of the letter B it uses the whole word [ QUOTE ] to open and [ / QUOTE ] to close (or begin and end depending on how you think of these things)

When you use the "reply with quote" option, the board automatically adds both "quote" and "bold" to the entirety of the post you're replying to. If you just want to quote a little bit of that post, just delete all the bits you don't want from between the [ QUOTE ][ B ] Blah blah stuff someone said blah. [ / B ][ / QUOTE ] (again, I added spaces so you could see what I'm typing, to get these codes to work, type them without spaces, and don't forget the / to close them)

You can add "quote" manually as well. If I split your post into two parts, then put a new "end" [ / QUOTE ] at the end of the first part and a new "beginning" [ QUOTE ] at the start of the second part, I can then insert a comment of my own in between.

See, I can respond to one little thought, and then...

...respond to another little part. And notice how I just deleted out "If you just want to quote a portion of a post, like maybe a couple of sentences, how do you do it?" in the second part of the quote.

As a matter of honesty and politeness, if you're deleting a lot of someone's quote in your reply, many people say something like "(snippage (or cut) for length)" or put .... (ellipses) to indicate that it's fragment of a larger statement. Like this:

quote:

Anyway, I probably rambled on too long, I hope this wasn't confusing. If you make a mistake, you can always go back and edit the little code things. If it's hopelessly messed up and frustrating, a mod can go into your post and fix it as well.

To quote just bits of a post, the way I do it anyway, is to click on the quote icon, and then highlight and delete the bits of the post that I don't want to quote. I don't think there's an easy way to quote only portions of the post without first quoting the whole thing and then physically removing the parts you don't want.

hope that helps!

edited to say: len, you certainly beat me there! you're post was a lot more explanatory than mine!

Well, the other way to quote parts of a post without the whole thing would be to just cut-and-paste, and then put the quoted portions in bold, or surround the quoted portion with the commands quote and /quote (surrounded by [ ]brackets, of course.)

And if it is Amber, then like Sela said, it's a combination of makeup, lighting, and angles, and not a very good combination I'm afraid.

I had the same reaction when I first saw these pics, and it was actually brought up at The Essence of Amber Forum. I believe Little Willow said that it was indeed Amber. It's from Teen Magazine 1998. Here's the URL for the pics and for the blurb. http://www.efanguide.com/~amber/ateen.html

I agree; it's all just a very bad combination of factors.

We're so used to seeing Amber in very 'natural' makeup - earthy, nothing too red or splashy - and with a certain tone and cast to her expressions. These photos are Amber well in the opposite direction - bright lipstick, lots of eyebrow, with a pouty, teen-cliche look.

It's Amber Benson's face under all that, yes, but very little of her personality.

Yah. I played around a bit, and I think that if you hit this intro page at any point during a browser session, even for an instant, the red folders appear whenever you hit the thread index after that, even if not following a link on the intro page. Your pages go directly to the intro page, and my bouncing up a level hit it. I'm not a huge fan, though. I think I'll gratiously save you some bandwith and just keep jumping straight to the thread index.

I hardly know what to do with my newfound freedom, as I have so many questions.... Ill have to take some time to think about it....

As a matter of honesty and politeness, if you're deleting a lot of someone's quote in your reply, many people say something like "(snippage (or cut) for length)" or put .... (ellipses) to indicate that it's fragment of a larger statement. Like this:

I read this board daily. It is the only buffy board I read.
Do I need to sign up for the Willow/Tara mailing list? Am I missing anything?

Ok, that is two questions really.

I always wondered about those pics too, i wondered if they were actually her. I guess it could just be the lighting and the make-up. Does anyone know what those photoshoots were done for?

Robin

Since I don't follow too many Pens fics, I usually just enter on the Kitten Board's thread listing. I have the following bookmarked:
/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&number=74

Unfortunately, you don't get that funky ``New posts since your last visit'' red icon badnezz. To activate that, I always have to jump up one level higher and re-enter.
