A question about WICCA

Postby La » Tue Mar 19, 2002 3:01 am

Tim,

I'd like to thank you for that list as well. I have met a couple of people at my (Unitarian) church who were members of cults and were lucky enough to find their way out. You also give some great general advices on looking into religion in general. And not to beat a dead horse, but I agree that reading about and researching is really important, as well as talking to members of the group/religion.

A question about WICCA

I'm glad I decided to check the board today. I'm mostly a lurker here, but have posted a few times. (I don't know how my number of posts is so high, it must be from old posts on another board or something..lol.) Anyways, for a few years I've run into more and more people that are practicing Wicca, and have always found it to be interesting. I think (for as little as I know) that thier beliefs are pretty cool. I had considered looking into it more, but have a hard time pulling myself away from my current faith. Is it possible to still believe in God as a Christian does, and also have Wiccan beliefs as well? I am not really a wonderful Christian.. I don't go to church, and haven't in a good many years. I have never read my bible, other than a few verses here and there. My belief was always that you don't have to go to church to have faith. Anyways, that is the thoughts on my mind as I read these posts.. can you believe in more than one way, or mix and match?

WebWarlock, I've loved reading your posts. But why can't we have an addiction to porn as well? LOL. j/k

Thanks for the kind words all.

Yeah Kath, repost where you like, that board looks pretty cool.

Meg: Sure porn is great too. But not much in terms of intellectual return.

A question about WICCA

Postby kyraroc » Tue Mar 19, 2002 2:24 pm

Regarding whether or not it's possible to mix and match elements of some or many religions -

Certainly it is. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that's at least in part how just about every religion got its start. Many people find an element of truth in a variety of different religions, and prefer to combine them into something that fits their beliefs best.

The only problem comes when you are asked what religion you are. Most religions accept a certain amount of variance in the beliefs of the people who belong to it. Some accept a lot. But almost all have a point where most members of the religion would say you're no longer really practicing the same religion, merely using the same name (although opinion can vary wildly at this point.) And I have seen cases where that was a reasonable point to make.

But even so, I've never had a problem with saying that my religion is personal, and not easily matched with any known by name.

Some Wiccans might think not, but I DEFINATELY think you can.

I like to think that we all believe in the same "God" so to speak, we just have different paths that we use to get to her/him/it.

Religion is a personal thing, so why must your belief coincide with everyone elses? In the end, it only matters how YOU think you lived your life, not them.

Hope this helps...quote:

That would be morphologically speaking.

I whole-heartedly agree! I am a firm believer in the doctrine of "One Truth, Many Paths." It helps I think to visualize faith as a mountain, with the Divine at the summit. You can begin from any point at the base of the mountain and take any one of innumerable paths upward, but they will all lead you to the same summit. It's a matter of finding which path is right for you. (Easier said than done, of course.)

A question about WICCA

Postby wiltar » Tue Mar 19, 2002 6:08 pm

I have a question that I hope someone here can tell me. I have the dutch translation of a book that by origin was English/American/something like that.
It was written by Cassandra Eason and it's called 'A complete guide to magic and ritual'

Can anyone tell me if this is a good book? Does it explain a lot of important stuff? should this book be taken seriously or is it one of those books that really are not valid at all?

I hope someone here can answer my question. Thanks in advance!

I'd like to suggest The Burning Times. It's quite an interesting video, but it's one that would get Tara and Willow upset... And all of us too. It can be quite graphic, but it's also very interesting. It's about Medieval Europe when so many women were killed for being witches. And it's not only about Wicca, but a general feminist reexamination of "history".

Sorry about the monstrously long URL. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 82-3917642

Thank you for answering my questions. I liked the answer that someone gave as being on a mountain, and there are many paths that can take you to the peak. Likewise, I'm sure there are many that will take you down, or lead you in circles. Hopefully, one would be able to find what is best for them and only go upward in thier journey.

I don't know how you feel about the movie Practical Magic, and I'm not saying it is or isn't showing anything good or true, but I loved the line they said in it, we all have a witch inside of us. Or something like that.. I need to watch it again. (Ok, so yea, I just love Sandra Bullock..lol.) So many things I've read about Wicca has interested me, but was unwilling to part with the idea of there being a God. Now I'm thinking it's possible to believe in both.

I'm also an active Wiccan and relaly don't object to any way of saying it.. its just words. For those who are intrested her eis the full unabridged Wiccan Rede.

Bide the Wiccan laws ye must
in perfect love and perfect trust.

Live ye shall, and let to live,
fairly take and fairly give.

Cast the circle thrice about
to keep unwelcome spirits out.

To bind the spell every time,
let the spell be spake in rhyme.

Soft of eye, light of touch,
speak ye little, listen much

Deosil go by the waxing moon,
chanting out the Witches' Rune

Widdershins go by the waning moon,
chanting out the Baneful tune

When the Lady's moon is new,
kiss the hand to her times two

When the moon rides at her peak,
Then your Heart's Desire seek

Heed the North wind's mighty gale,
lock the door and trim the sail

When the wind comes from the South,
love will kiss thee on the mouth

When the wind blows from the West,
departed souls may have no rest

When the wind blows from the East,
expect the new and set the feast

Nine woods in the cauldron go,
burn them fast and burn them slow

Elder be the Lady's tree,
burn it not or cursed ye'll be

When the wheel begins to turn,
Let the Beltaine fires burn

When the wheel hath turned a Yule,
light a log the Horned One rules

Heed ye flower, bush and tree,
by the Lady blessed be

Where the rippling waters flow,
cast a stone and truth ye'll know

When ye have an honest need,
hearken not to others greed

With a fool no season spend,
nor be counted as his friend

Merry meet and merry part,
bright the cheeks and warm the heart

Mind the threefold law ye should,
three times bad and three times good

When misfortune is enow,
wear the star upon thy brow

True in love ye must ever be,
lest thy love be false to thee

Eight words the Wicca Rede fulfill,
'An ye harm none, do what ye will

Trust In Joss

"Liberate tutemet ex inferis"

"Me and Willow always know how to find each other"

"Black mircles, dark wonders, another life of unknown pleasures"

"There are some corners of the Universe that have bred the most terrible things, things that stand against everything we believe in. They must be fought"
