Chapter 4: California Women - Part A

Big thanks to my lovely beta, Charlie! :heart

Chapter 4: California Women - Part A

Willow watched the TV with an intensity only ever procured by a sci-fi movie. She loved this movie, she'd seen it three times when it was showing at the movie theatre, and bought the DVD as soon as it was released. When Tara had been browsing through her DVD collection earlier today, she claimed she hadn't seen it. Willow, who had been leaning back on her desk chair, had lost her balance and fallen back in shock. After scrambling to her feet and scolding Tara for laughing, she proclaimed tonight would be movie-night. So here they were, lounging at 'slayer-center' — or that is what Buffy preferred to call her really huge single room these days — taking over the slayer's TV and bed while she patrolled.

"I don't get this movie." Tara stated an hour and forty-three minutes into the movie. Willow was propped up against the wall, four pillows giving her back the comfort it needed, and Tara was resting her head in Willow's lap.

"What's not to get? It's brilliant." Willow countered, and continued twirling her fingers through the blonde locks in front of her.

"Well, the acting is quite good, and the effects are good too-"

"Just good? They're freaking awesome!"

Tara turned around and smirked at Willow. "Or something a little less dorky." Willow amended and blushed. "Uh-huh," Tara said and turned back to the TV.

"Freaking awesome effects aside..." Tara said and waited for Willow's..."Hey!" she laughed, then continued, "I'm still a little confused. So the Matrix is the world we live in right now...or you know, the world as we know it?"

"Yup."

"And the real world..."

"Total post-apocalyptic hell on earth," Willow finished for her, "only without demons. Instead they have the A.I.-s tracking and killing them."

"And the reason you like it so much is because it sort of reminds you of your situation in Sunnydale."

"What do you mean?"

"Well Giles is sort of like Morpheus, Buffy is obviously Neo and you're like Trinity."

"Oh yeah? You think I'm like Trinity? 'Cause she's really cool."

"Uh-huh." That Halloween costume you still have in your closet made you look even more like her...Goddess, that thing was sexy.

Willow smiled and went back to the movie. They were just at the part were Neo was shot point black and staggered back, hitting the wall as he went down. She remembered what happened right after. "Wait! I'm not like Trinity at all, that's ... eww."

"Huh? Why eww?"

"Well, I don't wanna ruin it for you, but in two minutes you'll see why."

"O-kay."

Two minutes later Tara frowned. Yeah, I don't want you to be like Trinity.

"Get it?" Willow asked, and she saw Tara nodding from her position. "So, it's impossible for me to be like Trinity because I'm um, not...in love with Neo...or you know...um, Buffy," Willow trailed off and looked down at Tara. It's impossible, because I'm in love with you.

Tara met Willow's gaze and held it. She knew Willow wasn't in love with Buffy. She actually had a small theory, which had been building in strength since Halloween. Although she wasn't quite sure, and just the notion made her feel like a big egotist, she had the feeling that Willow might have a small crush on her. And it made her smile, big time. It was the little touches and shy glances that had been the basis for her initial theory. Then Willow's actions after her demon revelation had strengthened that theory, leading up to, what Tara believed had been a near-miss kiss. Not that I have anything to compare it to.

Tara loved Willow. She had never loved anyone as much as she loved Willow. She just didn't think she was in love with her. Nor was she prepared to deal with it if she was. But the tingly feeling in her stomach she got whenever she was around the redhead, which was basically every daylight hour...yeah, she was pretty sure that could be called a crush. So, she had a crush on Willow...and Willow had a crush on her. There was a whole lotta crushing going on. And wouldn't it be nice if they could be crushing together, preferably in their room, on either bed...together. Tara felt the telltale signs of blushing and quickly looked away. She was more than aware of her own shyness, and she just hoped Willow would make the first move, soon, because Tara knew she would die of embarrassment before she could utter those words herself. She turned around and saw the credits of the Matrix rolling up the screen. The movie is over? How did it end?

Tara wondered how long had she been staring at Willow? But she didn't have a chance to analyze it before Willow's voice caught her attention.

"Are you busy tomorrow?"

"Well," Tara turned yet again in Willow's lap and looked up at the redhead, "I have those things during the day called classes. They keep me kinda busy."

Willow rolled her eyes and Tara let out a big laugh. Willow poked Tara in the ribs. "Very funny. When did you become such a smartass?"

"After hanging around you so much." Tara smirked evilly and Willow shook her head. "Sure, blame your corruption on the innocent townie. Anyway..." Don't be such a loser...just do it. Willow pep-talked her way through her internal doubts. She decided to make her move as she and Tara stared at each other earlier for god knows how long. She had seen something in Tara's look that gave her the courage and now it was just a matter of finding the right words.

"Yes?" Tara drawled out after Willow hadn't spoken after her 'anyway' transition.

Okay, here goes. "Do you wanna go out tomorrow? With me?"

Tara's heart stopped. Like a date? She felt her heart slowly start pumping again, now stronger than ever. That's gotta be good. "Sure. Where do you wanna go?"

Oh my god! She said yes! Willow couldn't believe it but she tried to play it cool, aloof. "Um, wherever. It doesn't matter. Where do you wanna go?"

Tara smiled. "I don't know. Whatever you want is fine sweetie." She watched with anticipation at Willow's reaction. There's the shy glance, and the sparkling gold in her eyes, and the beatific smile. She's happy. She does like me.

"Um," Willow giggled in glee, "we could maybe go to dinner and then...um, maybe go see a movie?" Willow hesitated.

"Oh, yes, because we never watch movies together." Tara joked.

"Oh, we could do something else if you want, I just thought you know maybe it would nice to see a movie on a big screen for a change and not the little computer screen or Buffy's television screen, or even Giles TV, which granted is bigger than Buffy's but still...it's no movie screen but we can do somethi-"

"Will," Tara interrupted and chuckled in delight. "I was just joking, a movie sounds wonderful."

"Oh, really?" Willow hoped she had heard right. Did she just say wonderful?

"Really, really." Tara affirmed. She closed her eyes and brought up her hand to cover her yawning. "Sorry," she mumbled.

"It's okay." Willow said. A second later she too was yawning. "Oh great, you infected me," she accused.

Tara grinned. "I said I was sorry."

"I heard ya, although I'm not really sure you're really, truly all that sorry. That smirk gives you away every time." Willow jabbed Tara in the ribs again, who snorted from the contact and turned on her stomach.

"No, don't tickle me. I'm really sorry for infecting you with my involuntary yawn."

"Don't tickle you? Tara, you do realize you just signed a death sentence, right? Now I have to tickle you..." and she did just that. She jabbed and poked and tickled until Tara was laughing so hard she was clutching her stomach. Willow laughed just as much. She had decided some time ago that Tara's laugh was the greatest sound known to mankind and she had made it her mission to hear it as often as possible. Tara pushed herself up and away from Willow's fingers and then grabbed Willow's hands. She straddled Willow's legs and pinned her hands up against the wall, trapping them. She smirked at the surprised redhead, "Pinned ya." Willow nodded as her giggles subsided. "You sure did." The look of complete adoration she gave Tara made the blonde look down.

"Um," Tara felt herself blushing again, and willed herself to stop. Stop blushing, stop blushing, stop blushing. But it was too late. Fuck. Oops I can't believe I just said fuck. Oh, I did it again. She brought their hands down and rested them in Willow's lap. She gave them a light squeeze. "You feel that?" she whispered. Willow nodded, "I do. Are you casting right now?"

Tara shook her head, "no. This is our own magic responding to one another. No active casting needed."

"Really?" Willow looked down at their intertwined hands. The same tingling sensation that ran through her during their magic sessions was warming her hands and arms. For their to feel like this without casting...that had to be...special.

"Does this always happen?"

"No," Tara said and unconsciously started caressing Willow's hands with her thumbs. "Hardly ever, really. Only um, special magical relationships can connect without casting."

"What kinda relationships?"

"Oh, um...mother and daughter, and um..." Tara looked down and took a quick breath, "long time lovers and..." she looked back up at Willow, "s-soul mates . "

"S-soul mates?" Willow whispered and Tara nodded maintaining eye contact. "Tara, do you think we could be-"

The door to 'slayer-central' abruptly opened and interrupted Willow. A disgruntled slayer stomped in and slammed the door shut with such force it almost broke off the hinges.

"Argh! Don't you just hate men?!"

Willow and Tara both sighed and nodded discreetly to one another. Then they turned around and faced Buffy.

"Sure Buff," Willow agreed, "which ones are we hating?"

"Parker!" Buffy spat and stripped off her leather jacket. It was covered in mud and she twirled it around in her hand then tossed it with her all-mighty slayer strength towards her closet.

Willow took in the appearance of her friend and almost cried from the sight. It wasn't the mud and vampire dust that rattled her; those were daily occurrences, no, it was the look on Buffy's face that did it. The slayer looked half pissed off, half somebody-ran-over-my-puppy-and-kicked-it-afterwards, and half nobody-wants-me. And those were just too many halves.

"Oh my god, Buffy. What happened?"

Buffy looked up and her lower lip quivered. "Will?" she whispered with a hopeless expression on her face. Willow jumped out of the bed and went straight to her distraught friend. Buffy accepted the embrace with a thankful shudder. Willow guided them both to the bed and they sat down.

Tara came around on the other side of the slayer and gave her a sympathetic smile. "What happened?"

"Parker is a jackass," Buffy mumbled and wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. She looked down at her hand and frowned, "crap." Her hand was covered in dirt and now her eyes stung.

Tara stood up and walked to the door, "I'll go get you some wet towels."

Buffy nodded her thanks and turned to Willow. "He still hadn't called you know, even though it had been a few days, so when I saw him outside during patrol I ran up to him and asked what's up..." Buffy related the story to Willow as it had happened. Tara came back and handed Buffy the towels. "Thanks." She cleaned her face and hands as she continued her story. "And then he was all 'well what was it supposed to be Buffy?' and 'didn't you have fun?'...ugh! I'm such an idiot."

"Whoa! Let's put the blame where it belongs okay. You did nothing wrong. Sure, you made a mistake, but it's Parker — he's just a big...poop head." Willow nodded but noticed the sad smile on Buffy's face, "what?"

"Parker said it was okay to make mistakes, it was sweet."

Willow rolled her eyes. "No, it wasn't sweet. He was just saying that so he could get in your pants...or something a little less offensive. Remember, poop head."

"You're right. He's manipulative and shallow. And why doesn't he want me. Am I repulsive? If there was something repulsive about me you would tell me, right?"

"Buffy, I'm your best friend. I'd call you repulsive in a second."

"Thanks. I appreciate it," Buffy mumbled but she was smiling.

Willow wrapped her arms around Buffy's shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. "You're welcome. So, I believe this situation calls for...ice cream?"

"Oh yeah. Definitely. 'Phish food' please."

"You got. I'll be right back."

Willow left and Tara and Buffy sat together in silence. The slayer twisted her neck around and brought her hand up to rub it.

"Are you hurt?" Tara asked.

"A little, this one vamp hit me over the back of the head with a sign post. It wasn't very pleasant." Buffy continued to rub the back of her neck until Tara's hand stopped her. "Here, let me." Buffy looked up and frowned a bit, "o-kay." Tara's hand hovered over Buffy's neck and she mumbled a few words under her breath. Buffy felt a sudden heat warming the sore area and numbing the pain. When the heat dissipated the pain was gone.

"Hey!" She twisted her neck this way and that. "It's all gone. Sweet! Thank you Tara. That's some witch-fu you got going on."

Tara ducked her head down, "Um, you're w-welcome."

"Wow, a healer in the family, how handy is that?" Buffy grinned. Tara looked up shocked, "you think I'm f-family?"

"Well of course, you're part of the Scooby gang, right? Which makes you family in my book."

"And what book would that be?" Tara quipped.

"Huh?"

"Never mind."

"O-kay. Anyway, when's Wills getting here with the ice cream? I'm feeling all chocolate-y deprived."

"I'm betting it's decision anxiety."

"Oh yeah...too many flavors for Will."

The both snickered then an uncomfortable silence settled over the pair. "So..." Buffy voiced right when the door opened and Willow walked in carrying a small paper bag.

"Speak of the devil..." Buffy said as Willow closed the door.

"The devil? Where?" Willow nervously looked around. Tara chuckled, "Because in Sunnydale, that's not just a saying."

"Exactly, you never know."

"Whatever Wills, me want ice cream...now!" Buffy said and grabbed hold of Willow's bag. She reached in and pulled out a pint of ... "Karamel Sutra?" Buffy pouted, "I said 'Phish Food.'"

Willow rolled her eyes, "check the bag again." Buffy gave Tara the pint she was holding and looked into the bag, "Oh!" She smiled brightly and pulled out her pint of 'Phish food' and three plastic spoons. Willow sat down next to Tara and took two spoons from the slayer's hands.

"Why did you get 'Karamel Sutra'? It's only half-chocolate." Buffy wondered as she popped the lid of her ice cream and dug in.

"Well Tara likes caramel, and I like chocolate, so it works perfect for us. We can share, because really, a whole pint? It's a little big for one person."

"No isna." Buffy argued with a spoonful in her mouth.

"Well, maybe not for you, but for people without slayer metabolism...it's a little big on the serving size. Even half is too much for me sometimes."

Which proved to be right an hour later.

"Ahhh...owie." Willow crawled onto her bed and pulled her knees up into a fetal position as she clutched her stomach. "Remind me not to eat ice cream ever again...well, not for a whole day at least."

"Aww, sweetie. Is your tummy hurting?" Willow nodded and flashed Tara her puppy dog eyes and her irresistible pout. Tara smiled in sympathy and sat next to Willow on the bed. "Want me to rub it for you?"

"Would you?"

"Of course, sit up for a sec." Tara said and pulled Willow up into a sitting position. She kicked off her shoes and sat down on the bed by the headboard. She piled Willow's pillows behind her then led down. She spread her legs and indicated for Willow to sit between them. Willow grinned and crawled into position. Tara slowly guided her down until she was resting comfortably , her back pressed against Tara's torso.

Tara moved her hands to Willow's stomach and pulled gently on her shirt. "Is this okay?" Willow nodded so Tara pulled the shirt up and exposed Willow's stomach. She slowly brought her hand down and touched Willow's bare skin for the first time.

The first touch was electrifying and Willow gasped in surprise. "I'm sorry," Tara pulled away but Willow grabbed her hand and pulled it back down, "no, don't stop." Tara held Willow's shirt up with her left hand and started rubbing Willow's stomach with her right hand, moving in slow circles, using the palm of her hand for the most part, although sometimes she just used her finger tips and drew different shapes and swirls on Willow's tummy. Willow closed her eyes and had to bite her lip to stifle a moan. Could life be any better? Willow shook her head slowly as she answered her own question.

"Tara?" Willow asked after a long moment.

"Yeah," Tara was lost in the feel of Willow's skin and Willow's heat and Willow-tummy. She almost missed Willow's question.

"Would you be my official tummy-rubber?"

"Sure," Tara laughed, "just tell me where to sign."

"Oh," Willow grinned and got a naughty gleam in her eye. She placed her right hand over Tara's and stopped her movements. She pushed their hands a few inches down until they were below Willow's belly button. Tara's fingers were slightly under the waistband of Willow's jeans and she stopped breathing. "Right here," Willow whispered.

What do I do? What do I do? Tara's heart pounded in her chest and she let out a long drawn-out breath. Just play along, it's probably a joke."Really?" Willow nodded, "uh-huh". "So if I do this..." Tara moved their combined hands and signed her name with her fingertips on Willow's abdomen, "what do I get?"

"Well, I believe you just staked your claim. Willow-tummy is now officially yours." Willow moved her hand away from Tara's and left the blonde to her own devices. She closed her eyes and felt herself relaxing under the blonde's touch. Tara took the opportunity and started drawing lazy figure eights on Willow's stomach. "Mine?"

"Yours." Willow breathed out as she drifted off to sleep.

***

"These are the things we want. Simple things: Comfort, sex, shelter, food. We always want them and we want them all the time. The id doesn't learn it doesn't grow up. It has the ego telling it what it can't have and it has the superego telling it what it should want. But the id works solely out of the pleasure principle. It wants."

Unbeknownst to one another, Willow, Tara and Buffy all nodded their heads in agreement with what Professor Walsh was saying. Willow chanced a glance at Tara and sighed. Want indeed. Tara bit her lower lip and smiled a half-smile when she caught Willow staring, who grinned back, and Buffy stayed transfixed on Parker Abrams and his newest conquest few rows down. She squinted her eyes in part annoyance part trying to focus her invisible death rays as she sliced and diced through his torso.

"Stupid pleasure principle," Buffy mumbled and in the process interrupted Willow and Tara's subconscious flirting. Willow turned from Tara on her right side to Buffy and followed her gaze towards Parker. The redhead scowled at the slimy specimen and tore off an empty page in her notebook. Tara heard the tear and almost gasped, such was her surprise. Willow never wasted notebook paper.

"What are you doing," she whispered.

"Shh," Willow replied and crumbled up the paper into a tiny ball. She took aim and let it fly towards Parker.

"Yes!" she hissed under her breath as her shoot hit target. Parker's head snapped up as the paper hit his eyebrow and he looked around. Willow was so glad Professor Walsh was doing slides today — that meant a dark classroom — and that meant stinky Parker wouldn't know what hit him.

Tara chuckled at Willow's antics. She's so cute. She leaned closer and whispered in Willow's ear, "nice hit." Willow found herself blushing as she felt Tara's warm breath on her skin. She shivered involuntarily before she turned and grinned brightly, "you wanna give it a go? Oddly enough, it feels great. Why I never rebelled in high school is beyond me."

Tara brought up her hand to stifle her giggles. Professor Walsh was 'an evil bitch-monster from hell' when it came to class disturbances, and the blonde wasn't eager to fall into those hands. But flying paper was silent so she nodded and Willow tore off another page in her notebook.

"You really are a rebel Will. Look at you, wasting notepaper like nobody's business."

Willow just winked at the blonde in reply.

Tara slowly and as soundlessly as possible crumbled the paper into a tight ball, then threw it at Parker. The paper went sailing through air and hit Parker straight on the nose, then bounced off of him and hit the girl he was flirting with. They jumped back and the girl exclaimed a loud "Hey!" before she realized what had happened. Professor Walsh was not impressed.

Willow and Tara both snorted at the display, which had finally brought Buffy back from her fantasy. "Was that you Will?" Buffy whispered.

"Nope, that was all Tara." Willow whispered back.

"Go Tara!"

***

Willow and Buffy were sitting outside Stevenson Hall studying. They scored a table in the quad and were sitting next to each other on the bench going over notes. Well, Buffy was going over Willow's notes having missed most of class due to her Parker Abrams induced fantasy. It was a great day, like every other day; the sun was shining, the birds chirping, Willow was babbling — a truly wonderful day.

"So then I said, 'You wanna go out tomorrow tonight' and she was all, 'yeah, sure. Where do you wanna go?' and I said, 'wherever, it doesn't matter. Where do you wanna go?' and she said, 'I don't know. Whatever you want is fine sweetie', and then I suggested going out to dinner and then see a movie."

"Sounds like a date to me."

"See, that's what I was going for. But I'm not sure if she took it that way."

"Well, that is understandable Will. I mean, she doesn't exactly know you prefer women these days."

"I don't prefer women, I just prefer one. Just one woman."

"Riiight, it still doesn't give Tara a ticket on the clue-train."

"Well, then what should I do? Should I bring her flowers or something? Or candy? Buffy! Am I supposed to bring flowers and candy? Why didn't you tell me, now I have to run to the flower shop." Willow was getting a little bit too agitated and pale for Buffy's liking.

"Will! Relax. Take a deep breath." Buffy waited for Willow to do just that before continuing. "Good. And no, I don't think flowers and candy are such a good idea."

"You don't?" Willow pouted.

Buffy chuckled, "not on the first date where the other doesn't even know it's a date. Seriously, I'd think you'd just scare Tara away if you did that."

"So that's no on the flowers...check. What about candy? I could buy her one of those lollipop thingies she likes so much, right? That wouldn't be a 'oh no, this is a lesbian, gay-type of date, must run' kinda signal?"

"Huh?" Buffy scratched her chin. Was that supposed to make sense?

"Never mind." Willow mumbled. She sighed and looked down at the book in front of her. Usually math would cheer her right up, but this was her heart she was risking. She'd had her heart broken before — by Xander — but that was just a schoolgirl crush. This had the potential of being till death do us part type of thing, minus the death part. So just, till blank do us part or till nothing do us part. A small smile settled over Willow's features. I like that.

"Will?" Buffy said softly and managed to bring Willow out of her mindscape. "Yah?"

Buffy placed her hand over Willow's and gave it a light squeeze. "Everything is going to be okay. You'll see."

"You think so?"

"Yeah, I do. Everything is going to be just fine."

"Rough day?"

Willow and Buffy both scowled at the intruder. Xander held up a lighter towards Buffy, "Come on Buff. Work with me, be a lonely drunk. Rough day?"

"Stop flicking at me." Buffy grabbed the lighter away from Xander and put it down on the bench between her and Willow.

"Hey! I need that lighter. Give it back." Xander opened his palm in front of Buffy waiting for her to drop the lighter in front of him.

"No." Buffy slapped his hands away.

"But, but...it's essential to my new gig. I got the rag, I got my empathy face...see." Xander put on his best puppy-dog eyes, sympathetic smile expression. "But it doesn't work without the lighter. Do you expect me to say 'rough day' and hand them a peanut? Not gonna happen Buffster. So, give it."

"No!" Buffy insisted.

"Give me that lighter or I'll tell you all about my night with Anya after the Halloween party."

Willow's eyes went wide and she hit Buffy in the arm. "Buff, do it now." Buffy fumbled with the lighter as she went to grab it and it fell of the bench, "damn it."

"Okay, if you insist. It started with Anya taking of that hideous costume, and revealing she was naked underneath which proved to be a nice surprise." Xander was nodding his head and leering off into space.

"Oh god," Willow buried her head in her hands and groaned.

"Then she pushed me on the bed and ripped my shirt open..."

"A-ha! I got it!" Buffy exclaimed and tossed it over to Xander. He caught it easily and put it in his breast pocket. "Excellent. Want me to continue with the story?"

"No!" Buffy and Willow yelled at the same time.

"Are you sure? Because the really naughty parts are yet to come."

"Xander, I'm going to beat you if you don't shut up." Buffy threatened.

"Alright." Xander lifted his hands up in surrender, "no need to get physical, although there was a definite need for that on Halloween," he smirked at the looks of disgust on the faces of his best friends.

Willow couldn't take it anymore. Xander had gone from being her best friend slash loveable oaf to being such a... man-pig-guy person.

"Xander, what is it with you and blunt, tactless women? All they do is beat you around and occasionally have sex with you!"

Xander had a sheepish expression on his face and he shrugged his shoulders. A familiar smirk replaced the smile on his face.

"Say no more! It's the sex isn't it?" Willow huffed.

Xander nodded his head, "pretty much."

"Oh my god, when did everyone get so obsessed with sex? Where was I when this happened?"

Buffy chuckled, "Oh please, don't tell me you don't think about sex these days."

Willow had to admit, sex had entered her mind one or two times lately. Or thousand. "Yeah, okay, maybe I do but the person I want to have sex with...well, she um, just doesn't..." Willow trailed off.

Xander nodded his head and showed Willow his empathy face. "Rough day?" But before Willow could slap him all the bells went off in Xander's mind. "Did you just say 'she'?"

Willow sighed. Could she tell him? Xander was a pretty trustworthy guy when it came to keeping secrets. And he was one of her best friends. He'd probably be hurt if she didn't tell him, when and if he finally found out. Yeah, okay. I'll tell him. Moping Xander is no fun.

"Well, Xander. Apparently I'm in love with Tara. Old news, get over it." She saw the smirk teasing the corners of Xander's mouth so she added, "Quickly!"

Xander broke out in a big grin and visible bounced from excitement. "And does she feel the same way?"

"No," Willow grumbled.

"She so does!" Buffy argued.

Xander, ignoring Willow's reply squealed in delight. "This is so great!" He stared off in space, nodding occasionally and finally breathing out "oh yeah." Buffy followed his gaze and wondered what he was staring at. Willow stood up and grabbed her heavy math book and walked around the table towards Xander. She lifted the book up and smacked Xander over the head with it.

Xander whimpered and rubbed his head, "okay, owie." Willow flashed him her resolve-face and he quickly crumbled. "Sorry."

As Willow sat back down he tried to make amends. "I mean, this is great for you! Did I not mention the "you" part?"

Willow shook her head in exasperation.

"I gotta go to class," Buffy finally piped up after having sat idly by while Xander made a fool of himself. He was always so good at that. It amazed her.

The three of them stood up from the table and Willow and Buffy grabbed their books and notes and stuffed them in their bags. They started walking away from the dorm towards the academic buildings.

Xander slipped in next to Willow and put his arm around her shoulder. "My Will...in love with a girl."

Buffy snorted at the look of annoyance Willow was sporting.

"Finally we can talk about girls. You know, guy to guy," off Willow's death stare Xander revised his earlier statement, "guy to gay girl? You are gay right? Anyway, what's your opinion on breasts? The bigger the better right?"

Willow groaned all the way to class. I miss moping Xander.

Sweet update. Willow and Tara need to stop dancing around each and other and admit they are in love.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Tinnakaren:

I am really enjoying this fic. It's lighthearted with just enough of a dose of occasional angst to keep even an angst-whore like me (yes I admit it) thoroughly interested and entertained.

This description cracked me up:
Quote:
The slayer looked half pissed off, half somebody-ran-over-my-puppy-and-kicked-it-afterwards, and half nobody-wants-me. And those were just too many halves.

So innocent and so cute...so very Willow. I loved it.

Keep it coming!! I wanna see what happens on this "date"!!

Cheers

Chapter 4: California Women - Part B

Postby tinnakaren » Tue Mar 23, 2004 7:24 pm

Well, I seem to have promised smoochies so here they are... no, not really. Well okay, there are some smoochies...but nothing major. This is a PG-13 fic after all ... *sigh*

Thanks to Charlie for being able to do her beta-magic, despite being a little busy beever (that's bee and beaver combined, mind you), and completely overloaded in school. I'm keeping her from school work - how evil am I? :eyebrow

Chapter 4: California Women - Part B

6:57

Willow glared at her alarm clock, willing the digits to change. She sat on her bed, nervously fiddling her fingers. Tara's class was supposed to be over at 6:45 and they were going to go out when she got back. It only took five minutes to walk from the Art building to Stevenson so Willow was getting a little bit nervous. What if Tara stood her up? What if the blonde met someone in class and fell instantly in love? What if right now they're kissing and falling down on the bed, discarding clothes and running their hands all over each other. Tongues dueling, teeth nibbling, fingers thrust-

Tara opened the door to her room and walked in, "Hey sweetie, sorry I'm late. I got assigned another team as-oof" The force of a Willow-shaped person flinging themselves in her arms knocked the wind out of her and she stumbled back and hit the door.

"Um, I missed you too?" Tara questioned and tentatively embraced Willow back who mumbled something against her shoulder. "What was that?"

Willow pulled her head away, "I said: I thought you had stood me up," she pouted then buried her head back in the crook of Tara's neck.

Tara smiled, then giggled, then full out laughed. She squeezed Willow a little tighter. "You are just too cute for words, you know that?"

Willow smiled against Tara's skin and nodded her head.

"Okay," Tara said and pulled from the embrace, "I'm just gonna jump in the shower really quick and then we can go? It's been a long day — I feel all bleh."

Willow stepped back and appraised Tara, "Hmm, well, you don't look like it, but okay. I'll wait — patiently this time." She flashed Tara a toothy grin then sat back down on her bed.

Tara hurriedly went around the room and tossed a jacket and a book bag on her bed, kicked off her shoes, then went to her closet, got her bath kit and her robe and left the room. When she came back four minutes later Willow was still sitting on her bed with the same toothy grin. She returned it with a lopsided smile and Willow actually curled her toes in excitement. Tara went to her closet and found a suitable outfit for the evening. Judging from Willow's clothes casual yet not was the way to go. She placed her khakis and her light-blue shirt on the bed and then went to untie her robe when she remembered that in her hurry earlier she had forgotten to take underwear with her. Which left her naked under the robe...and Willow was in the room.

"Um, Will?"

"Yah?"

"Could you um, turn around for a s-second? I'm sort of n-naked underneath my robe."

Wide-open green eyes stared back at her. "Yah," Willow squeaked, "sure." But she made no move to turn around.

"Um, Will?" Tara made a motion with her hands for Willow to turn around.

"Oh, right...that might help." Willow smiled apologetically then turned around and lay down on her bed, facing the wall. She heard the robe drop to the floor and closed her eyes. Images of naked-Tara flittered through her mind, and she just barely suppressed a moan.

"Okay, I'm ready."

"Me too." Willow whispered and rolled off the bed. Tara stood in front of her smiling brightly and looking beautiful as ever. "Wow, you look...um, nice." Willow finally settled on, shaking her mind of the long lines of poetic phrases it had wanted to shower upon the blonde.

Tara blushed and almost ducked her head but stopped herself just in time. "Um, thank you. You too. You look nice too." Tara nodded in agreement with her words. Willow really did look nice. Beautiful even. The denim skirt and the light pink t-shirt complemented each other nicely.

"So, s-shall we?"

Willow nodded, "we shall!"

***

After trying to decide where to go for dinner for the better part of the walk down town they settled on a nice health food restaurant, which served a range of delicious sandwiches as well as soups and salads. They sat in the corner booth and ordered their food.

As they waited they kept stealing glances at each other then looking away, blushing. They were both completely silent, not having any idea what to talk about. Yet Willow was talking up a storm in her mind. Finally she couldn't take it anymore.

"Does this feel awkward?"

Tara nodded her head once, "a little."

"Why is that?" Willow questioned, "We talk all the time, about anything and everything."

"I think it's because this is a date, and not just us hanging out. There are totally different expectations and um...what?" As Tara was talking Willow's expression had turned from apprehensive to ecstatic and she was now grinning very dopily.

"You know it's a date?"

"Um, well...isn't it?"

Willow nodded her head enthusiastically up and down. "So this doesn't bother you?" Willow pointed to both her and Tara.

"Bother me?" Tara asked and took a sip of her water.

"Yeah, you know...me, lusting after you." Willow winced. Oh my god, did I just say that?

Tara almost sprayed her water all over the table, but she managed to swallow with some dignity. She wiped her mouth with her napkin. "You what?"

"Umm..." Willow's eyes darted from left to right and she felt herself getting warm all over. A small smirk found its place among her expressive face and she could do nothing but shrug her shoulders.

The waitress came around with their dinner and interrupted any further discussion on the topic for the time being. Tara was secretly relieved. She had just gotten used to the idea of Willow having a crush on her - Willow lusting after her...that took some further adjustments.

They started on their meals in silence until Willow piped up, "Okay, random topic of discussion...um...oh, color harmonies!"

Tara swallowed the bite of chicken and flushed it down with some water. "Color harmonies?"

"Yes, do you have a specific color harmony you favor over others in your work, or does it depend on the work itself and what you are trying to express with that, um, work?"

Tara giggled, "Will, have you been reading my Color Theory notes?"

"What? No! Of course not. You know I think notes are sacred and never to be shared unless specifically permitted to do so. But I may have, and I'm not admitting to anything, just so you know, glanced through your textbook."

"You read the textbook? Will, it's 200 pages."

"I..ahh...I don't know. I was bored?" Tara raised her eyebrow in response. "No? Um, I was curious?"

"About color theory?" Tara said incredulously.

"Okay, fine. I read it so I would know what you were talking about when you were talking about your classes. And so I could have a conversation to you about art and actually understand what you were talking about. And so that you wouldn't always shy away from speaking about your art projects because you think I don't understand or don't find it interesting. Which I do...so much." Willow ended her explanation with a sad yet hopeful look.

"Oh." Tara wasn't sure what to say. "You did that for me?"

Willow nodded her head and took a sip of her water.

"That's...very sweet actually."

Willow grinned. "So, color harmonies. Any favorites?"

Tara laughed then and Willow sighed with happiness. This might just work. "Well actually, analogous color harmony is probably what I use most, but that's because most of my work so far as been realistic..."

After their first hurdle, or two, the date went of smoothly. Tara talked about her art, and Willow talked about programming, they both talked about web design and decided then and there that they should start their own web design company in the future. WT and TW designs had been mentioned but they quickly discarded that idea. Tara wanted Little Tree designs but Willow's scowling made her back out. In the end they settled on Maclay-Rosenberg, and Willow had laughed and said it almost sounded like they were married. Several blushes later talks of music, movies, books and cartoons surfaced and by the time they reached the movie theater Tara was sure she had exhausted her ability to speak for the rest of the night, but a smile from Willow was like a kick-start to her vocal cords and soon words tumbled out of her in streams of coherent and not so coherent thoughts and speculations. Willow suspected babbling was contagious and that Tara had caught it.

"So, what movie do you want to see?" Willow asked as she looked up at the board announcing tonight's features: The Bachelor, The Bone Collector, Bringing Out The Dead, Fight Club, House on Haunted Hill or Three to Tango.

"Um," Tara looked at Willow instead of the board, "doesn't matter. What do you wanna see?"

Willow pursed her lips as she went over the options. "How about the Bone Collector?"

Tara glanced up and finally read the announcement board. She frowned at the choices, "Um, doesn't that sound a little, um, scary?"

Willow nodded, "Yeah, but it's Angelina Jolie..." she trailed off, a little too wistfully for her date.

Tara looked back at Willow, "Oh, you like her? I thought you were lusting after me?"

Willow turned her head quickly towards Tara. The blonde didn't look too happy, but a smirk was teasing around her lips, and she was trying hard not to give in to it.

Willow squinted her eyes as she contemplated how to proceed. Play along or... "I am," it slipped out before she could stop herself. So much for 'play along'. "I mean, I do...um..." Willow rolled her eyes at her inability to form a sentence. Tara bit her lip as she smiled. "Do what? Like Angelina or the um, other thing?" Willow opened her mouth to answer when she was interrupted.

"Can I help you?" A very bored looking ticket booth operator droned out the same phrase for the 138th time that evening.

"Oh," Tara looked at Willow who shrugged her shoulders. She turned back and quickly scanned over the available features and picked the last one she saw, "two for Three to Tango." She dug in her pocket for money when Willow beat her to it and slipped $15 under the glass.

"Will, you don't have to."

"I asked you out so, you know..."

Tara smiled shyly at the redhead, "are you sure?" Willow nodded. "I want to."

"Could you flirt somewhere else, please?"

Tara glanced behind her and saw a rather impatient looking couple waiting in line behind them. The guy rolled his eyes at his girlfriend who made a 'shoo' hand gesture at Tara.

"Oh, um, I'm s-sorry." Tara grabbed the two tickets from the booth with her left hand, grabbed Willow's hand with her right and pulled her towards the entrance.

When they got inside Tara held out one of the tickets for Willow as she scanned the area. She'd never been in here before. The sad excuse for a movie theater in her hometown didn't look anything like this one. That one had been closer to those slide shows in Professor Walsh's class whereas this one...Tara actually spun around in circles, Willow shuffling behind her since she had no intention of letting go of Tara's hand.

"Wow, this place is um...kinda nice."

"You think so?" Willow quickly glanced around the familiar movie theater. She'd been going here for as long as she could remember. Sure it had changed a bit over the years but she couldn't really call it nice. Average maybe or, "it's alright, I guess." It had the concession stand in the middle of the lobby, the sparkling lights around the movie posters covering every wall, the hallway leading to the auditoriums straight ahead from the entrance and restrooms on either side of the hallway. Pretty average.

"Anyway, you wanna get some movie-munchies?"

Tara nodded and Willow pulled her towards the concession stand. They ended up getting a medium Sprite and popcorn and some Jujubes. Sprite because Willow wasn't a fan of Coke ("my mom used to give me a coke when I had the stomach flu, and now it just reminds me of you know... regurgitation."), popcorn because it's against the law not to, and Jujubes because Tara thought the bee on the pack was cute.

They made their way into the correct auditorium and sat down in the back. Willow placed their drink in the cup holder between them and put the popcorn in her lap. The movie hadn't started but the previews were rolling. Willow loved the previews, but she wasn't paying attention this time. Nope, she was staring wistfully at Tara's hands. She had been forced to let go earlier to hold their munchies and she missed the feeling already. Holding Tara's hand was a soothing, calming emotion tinged with excitement and tingling sensation. She liked that feeling. But Tara was twirling the Jujubes pack in her hands, keeping them busy.

"Tara, can I have a Jujube?"

"Of course sweetie." Tara opened the pack and handed it to Willow who took out two pieces. Willow chewed and quickly swallowed the Jujubes.

"Tara, would you like some popcorn?"

"Um, yes, thank you." Tara grabbed a handful and munched on them slowly, Willow watching the whole time.

"Tara, would you like some Sprite?"

Tara nodded absentmindedly and leaned in and took a sip then went back to watching the screen.

"Tara, can I hold your hand?"

Tara's stomach flip-flopped when she heard the question. She is so sneaky. She kept her eyes on the screen as she smiled and held out her hand to Willow, her palm facing up. Willow's heart pounded in her chest at the gesture and she slowly placed her hand in Tara's.

***

After the movie they strolled down the densely populated Main Street. They reached The Grotto and Willow suggested stopping by to say hi to Xander, and see if Buffy was still there. A safer escort back to the dorms could not and would not be found.

Willow and Tara walked down the steps to the local hangout. It was a popular place, mainly because it served beer to anyone who flashed some cash, no ID required.

"There's Xander," Willow noted and pointed Tara towards her friend behind the bar. "Doesn't he need to be twenty-one to work at a bar?" Tara asked as they reached the bar table and took a seat. "Not if you have a fake ID."

"Fake ID? Really?"

"Yeah, and it's a really crappy one too. You should see it. It looks like it was printed of a HP DeskJet." Willow snorted from her own joke but Tara's puzzled look made her frown. "Sorry, tech-y stuff. HP DeskJet is a printer you get when you need to print out easy stuff, like documents, small pictures etc. For a believable fake-ID you need at least a Precision Scan printer...and this is really boring you and I'll stop now."

Tara just shook her head and smiled. She leaned over and kissed Willow softly on her cheek. "You're cute."

"Oh yeah?" Tara nodded and leaned in again. Willow leaned in as well and their faces got closer and closer together until, "Willster! My bestest bud!"

God damn you Harris! They both snapped back as Xander approached them. "Will...and Tara. Well look at that." He leered at Tara, giving her the one over and flashed Willow a thumbs-up. Willow dove into the bowl of nuts in front of her and tossed a handful at Xander.

"Hey! Where's the love?"

"Don't push it." Willow warned her friend with another raised hand full of peanuts.

"O-kay. So what are you two up to?" Xander smirked and sent a knowing look Willow's way. Willow could read Xander like an open book and she knew exactly what he was thinking of. "None of your business Xander."

"I'm sensing some hostility here. Are you unsatisfied about something?"

"That's it. Come on Tara. Let's go." She jumped of the barstool and led Tara away from Xander. "Hey Will, could ya at least take Buffy with you?"

Willow sighed and nodded her head. She looked around the bar but couldn't see the slayer anywhere.

"There she is," Tara said and led Willow through the crowds of people to a corner booth where the slayer sat amongst four boys drinking beer.

"Buffy?"

Buffy looked through her empty mug at Willow and Tara. "Wills, you're all blurry. Are you okay?"

"I could ask the same thing Buff," Willow took the mug from Buffy and placed on the table. "How much have you been drinking?"

"Oh, pfff...just two or three...um, pitchers." She dismissed the notion with a wave of her hand. She then repeated that movement several times as she stared transfixed at her fingers. "Anyway...what have you been doing?" Buffy grinned at the two witches. Buffy moved in her seat and made room for the two of them, "here, sit."

"O-kay," Willow slid in next to Buffy and Tara followed.

"Here, have some beer." One of the boys offered and placed two mugs in front of the witches.

Tara shook her head, "no thank you." Willow declined as well.

"Hey now, drink beer or...um, what was I saying?"

"Beer?" Buffy offered, and the boy nodded in the affirmative. Buffy nudged Willow to take a sip. "It's just beer."

Willow and Tara exchanged nervous looks. They both shrugged their shoulders and smiled at their synchronicity. After Buffy jabbed her in the shoulder for the sixth time, Willow sighed. "Well, okay. One sip couldn't hurt right?"

Several sips later Tara was feeling very talkative and brave and Willow, well...she was just plain frisky.

"You know Buffy, besides Willow, I've never had a crush on anyone. Isn't that weird?"

"Very. Were there no boys where you lived?" The slayer wondered out loud and took a sip from her mug.

Tara shook her head. "Not too many, no."

"Yeah, and who cares about boys anyway?" Willow piped up and scooted closer to the blonde. She put her arm around Tara's shoulder and played with her hair. "You like me and I'm a girl, with girl parts. Just like you're a girl, with um..." Willow eyes glanced downwards and rested on Tara's chest. She brought her hand up and traced a path with her index finger from Tara's collar down between her breasts, and down her stomach and then let her hand fall in Tara's lap, "with girl parts."

Tara looked down at Willow's hand in her lap and squeaked, "yes. I have um, girl parts."

"I know," Willow said huskily, and started stroking Tara's thigh.

Oh goddess! Shivers ran up and down Tara's back and she had to close her eyes and take a deep breath just so she could speak again. "That feels so good Will," she whispered.

Willow smiled wickedly and winked at the blonde, "I know of something else that will feel even better."

"Really? What?"

Willow leaned in and whispered in Tara's ear. As she leaned back Tara groaned. "Oh yes, can we do that?"

"Uh-huh."

"Do what?" One of the boys asked. Willow and Tara looked away from each other and noticed the four boys in front of them drooling. They both frowned at the intrusion.

"I didn't hear all of it," Buffy said, "but something about licking and nibbling."

"Buffy!" Willow yelled, and hit Buffy in the shoulder.

"What?" The slayer pouted and rubbed her shoulder. Willow glared at her friend, but it was of no use. Repentance was not forthcoming.

Tara decided to intervene, "And you know something else Buffy, I'm almost nineteen years old and I've never even kissed a girl, or um, you know...a boy. How pathetic is that?"

Willow gave the slayer one more scolding look then turned back to her gorgeous date, "it's very pathetic, you should do something about that."

Tara nodded and winked at Willow, "I just wish someone would teach me, you know."

"Oh, hey...I can help you with that." One of the boys offered.

Willow snapped her head towards the boy, "what?"

"Yeah, me too." "Me three." "Me three too." The last boy offering to kiss Tara looked around and counted his friends and then him, "um, me four?"

"Really? You all wanna help me?"

"Absolutelelyaly," the four of them slurred and at the same time moved their chairs a little closer.

The sound of four shifting chairs made Willow's jealousy flare up. "Hey!" she pushed the table away from her, hitting all four boys in the stomach. She flashed her 'resolve-face' all around the table. "Tara's my date. If anyone's gonna be teaching her how to kiss it should be me."

"Okay," Tara whispered.

"What?" Willow looked at Tara and saw the sultry half-smile directed at her. "I said okay."

"Really?"

Tara nodded, "kiss me."

"Yes ma'am." Willow wet her lips and Tara did the same, then they leaned in and kissed for the first time. The kiss was soft and gentle and over way too quickly. Tara licked her lips afterwards, "mmm."

Willow smiled and nodded, "How was that?" Tara shifted a little closer, "Hmm, nice."

"Just nice?" Willow pouted. Tara leaned in closer, "Nice is good." Willow moved closer as well. "We can do it again."

Tara's reply came in the form of kiss. It was soft and sweet, just as the first one, but lasted longer. Lips moved, opening and closing against each other, but neither deepened the kiss. Just as Willow was about to pull away Tara latched onto her bottom lip and sucked it back in her mouth. She released it with a pop a minute later and Willow whimpered at the loss. She sucked on her own bottom lip for comfort. It tasted like Tara, but it didn't compare to the real thing. "Man, you're good at this," she finally breathed out.

"Really?"

"Oh gods, yes."

Tara arched her eyebrow at Willow and grinned, "so you don't mind if I do this?" She kissed Willow again and used her body weight to push her down on the bench. I so don't mind, Willow thought as she went down.

"Whoa!" Buffy jumped from her seat and climbed onto the table. "Hot, lesbian sex about to happen." The four guys clambered onto the table as well and leaned over to watch the two witches, "yeeeaah."

The Rose24: Eek! Hope I didn't drive you away - you're my only perpetual feedback-y person and I so enjoy reading your replies. But don't worry - the bad beer was needed for this chapter - but not to get WT together, they'll do that the right way.

You left it with a cliffhanger and I so wnna know what's gonna happen. :grin

Will they sober up right then? Will Xander drool a lot? Will Buffy (or who's in Buffy's body) cheer them on? :lol

Waiting patiently though, cause I know it'll be worth it. :grin

Chapter 4: California Women - Part C

Postby tinnakaren » Thu Apr 01, 2004 4:08 pm

Well, here it is, the final part of Chapter 4. Sorry it took so long. And thanks to Charlie for being a super special beta ;)

Chapter 4: California Women - Part C

Previously:

Tara arched her eyebrow at Willow and grinned, "so you don't mind if I do this?" She kissed Willow again and used her body weight to push her down on the bench. I so don't mind, Willow thought as she went down.

"Whoa!" Buffy jumped from her seat and climbed onto the table. "Hot, lesbian sex about to happen." The four guys clambered onto the table as well and leaned over to watch the two witches, "yeeeaah."

***

Willow's laptop made swirls and sounds where it was placed on her nightstand as the DVD played on. Willow and Tara were lounging sideways on the bed watching the screen. Well, Tara watched the screen, Willow watched Tara watch the screen. There was a lot of watching going on.

Without any indication, Willow sat up, turned towards Tara and kissed her quickly before she could react. She pulled away a moment later and waited for the recrimination.

Tara was shocked and her face showed it. She sat up and made eye contact with Willow, who looked part apologetic, part smug, anticipating her reaction.

"Um, w-what just happened?" Tara asked.

"Um, I kissed ya?" The redhead replied.

"Oh. So I wasn't just imagining that?"

Willow shook her head.

"Why?"

Why? That was the question wasn't it? Why did she kiss Tara? Willow couldn't think of any other reason than the truth so she said just that.

"Um, because I like you so much. And I think about you, and I just wanna kiss you every second of every day?"

"You do?"

"Oh yeah," Willow breathed out, but then she caught herself and said, "I mean, um, yes?"

"But...wow!" Tara finally said, and leaned back down on the mountain of pillows behind them. Willow leaned in after her and made eye contact. She held it as she leaned closer and closer until their lips barely touched. But as soon as she closed her eyes, the spell was broken and Tara pushed her away and got off the bed. She walked to the middle of the room then turned around and faced Willow.

"Willow, I'm not g-gay." Tara said, with as much conviction as she could muster, which in the end didn't turn out to be very much.

Willow knew this conversation would be a possibility and she had accounted for it, and prepared for it.

"How do you know?" she challenged the blonde.

Tara's eyes widened. "What?"

"How do you really know you're not gay? I mean, I didn't know — really — until I met you."

"Oh goddess," Tara moved to the bed and sat next to Willow. "I made you gay? I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to."

Willow smiled and few giggles escaped from her lips. Leave it to Tara to apologize to Willow for her falling for the blonde.

"Don't be. It's wonderful. Let me show you." She grabbed the collar of Tara's shirt and pulled the blonde slowly to her. The action gave Willow an amble view of Tara's cleavage and for a moment she was transfixed, staring. Tara's heart sped up at the proximity to Willow and she breathed in the familiar scent of the redhead. Strawberries and sandalwood, that's what she smelled like. Tara moved a little closer then noticed Willow staring.

"Will, what are you doing?" she whispered.

"Well, it appears I'm staring down your shirt." Willow whispered back.

"That's what I thought."

"Tara, did you know that you have the most wonderful breasts I've ever seen."

That got Tara's attention and she pulled away, fast, shielding her chest with one arm.

"You've seen my b-breasts?"

Willow smiled sheepishly. "Um, oops?"

"Did you l-like...when I was asleep?" Tara accused.

"What? God, no! No, no, no..." Willow shook her head for emphasis. "No!" she added, for good measure.

"Then when?"

"Well, I may have peeked once or twice when you were changing in the mornings, when you thought I was asleep..."

"Oh my god! I feel so..." Tara put her elbows on her knees and looked down at the floor. She tried to find the words to describe what she was feeling.

"Repulsed? Disgusted?" Willow helped.

Tara shook her head, so Willow tried a different approach. "Wanted? Sexy? Hot? Because you are, you so are."

Tara looked sharply up at Willow. Horny — that's what I feel — I think.

Willow recognized the desire in Tara's eyes and was thrilled by it. She grabbed the back of Tara's head and pulled her in and kissed her hard. Tara started kissing her back but when she felt Willow's tongue running over her bottom lip she jumped back and stood up.

"I can't do this. I can't be gay. My dad's gonna kill me."

Willow fell back on the bed and groaned in frustration. Then she jumped off the bed quickly.

"I'll kill him first, he never has to find out."

"Willow!" Tara warned.

"Do you really care what he thinks Tara? What do you want?"

"I..."

"When you think of me, what do you feel?"

Tara backed away from Willow until the back of her legs touched her bed. She flopped down, and looked down at the floor. "I'm not s-sure," she whispered.

Willow sighed and sat down on her own bed. She looked at Tara, ducking her head, and smiled sadly. She knew the blonde had difficulties articulating what she was feeling. That was partly why her eyes were so expressive. She had all those feelings struggling to get out and when she couldn't say them, she showed them.

"Do you like me Tara?" Willow started.

"Of course! You're my b-best friend."

"But do you 'like me' like me."

"I don't know. I'm so confused Will. I have all these feelings, and I don't know what they all mean..."

"If I died-" Willow whispered.

"You're not gonna die!" Tara interrupted vehemently.

"Eventually I am. Hopefully not for a very long time though, but if I did die, sooner, would you miss me?"

"That's not even a question. I'd be...inconsolable."

Tara quickly crossed the room and sat next to Willow. She took Willow's hand in hers and interlaced their fingers.

"Willow, if you died...my life w-would cease to exist. You, um, you a-are my life."

Willow smiled and squeezed Tara's hand. "What about you?" Tara asked.

"If you died?" Willow questioned. Tara nodded and looked down.

"You dying is like...well it's the worst thing imaginable...ever. I wouldn't be able to live without you." Willow paused and waited for Tara to look up. "I wouldn't want to live without you."

"Really?" Tara's eyes glistened from unshed tears, and Willow nodded. "Really, really." After a long moment of silence Willow had to ask. "So..."

"So?"

"Well I guess the question is..." Again Willow made a move towards the blonde, and Tara leaned in as well. Their lips touched for a second but again Tara pulled away. Willow was about to cry but she held it in.

"Don't you want me Tara?"

"I'm just so scared Will."

"Why? Of what?"

"All of my life I've been discriminated against and I hate it. I absolutely hate it! For being a Maclay, for being a demon, or a witch...I didn't have any friends...or..." Tara looked away from Willow, "I just wanna be normal," she whispered.

"And being with me isn't normal? Is that what you're saying?" It came out a little harsher than Willow intended.

"God no, Will, of course not. I just, um, I don't wanna be g-gay."

"Forget about gay, or lesbian or any other label for just one second. Just tell me what you feel!"

"I don't know alright? God..." Tara stood up and paced the room. "I don't know what I'm feeling. I don't recognize these feelings; I don't know what they are. I've never been attracted to anyone before, or been in love with anyone before...I don't know what it's supposed to feel like!"

Willow stood up. "Well, figure it out god damn it."

"Fine!" Tara yelled.

"Fine!" Willow echoed.

Tara glared at Willow, then stomped out the room and slammed the door.

Willow stared at the closed door. "Well crap!"

Tara leaned against the door with a bang. Stupid, stupid, stupid, she berated herself. Why can't I just do what I feel for once? Damn the consequences.

Willow stood still facing the door. "One Mississippi, two Mississippi...oh fuck that," she opened the door and yelled "Tar-"

Tara stumbled backwards into the room but Willow stopped her from falling down. The blonde turned around and glared at the redhead.

"You're so stupid Will!" Tara spat out.

"I'm stupid?"

"Yeah, you're a complete idiot!"

"You're the one who can't figure out what she's feeling!" Willow accused.

"Well if you gave me half the chance maybe I would!" Tara retorted.

"Fine!"

"Fine!"

Again Tara stalked out and slammed the door. "Arrgghh!" she growled in frustration.

Tara paced back and forth in front of the door. The frustration rolled off her in waves. Students trying to pass by her stopped when she glared at them. They waited until she paced past them to make a run for it. No way in hell did they want to get in her way. Finally the blonde stopped pacing and faced the door. She knocked once, hard, and braced herself.

The door opened forcefully. "What!" Willow exclaimed as she opened the door but when she saw it was Tara she set her jaws and frowned.

"Yes?" Tara could actually hear Willow grinding her teeth.

Tara was breathing hard and fast and she steeled her gaze on the redhead. She pulled Willow roughly to her by the collar and kissed her soundly on the lips. Then she pushed the redhead away, still holding her collar. "I figured it out."

Willow audible gasped and her heart stopped. "You mean?"

"Oh I mean," Tara nodded, "okay?"

"Oh hell yes!" Willow jumped up and wrapped herself around Tara, arms around her shoulders, and legs around her waist. Tara stumbled back a step as she caught the redhead and laughed. Willow pulled herself to Tara and kissed her passionately. Tara responded with equal fervor and walked the two of them back into the room. Willow used one of her hands to slam the door shut...

Tara shot up in her bed, which caused Willow to roll over but she didn't wake up. Tara stared down at the adorable redhead then at the closed door. The room was bright and she was lying on top of the covers, still wearing her clothes from the night before. Willow was sleeping peacefully next to her, also fully clothed. Tara lay slowly back down and stared up at the ceiling. Oh goddess, it was just a dream — a freakishly elaborate dream.

***

Willow woke up slowly to the wonderful smell of mocha and vanilla. Mmm, Tara and mocha in the morning. Yay! She opened her eyes and found Tara lying next to her, watching her. "Hey you." Tara whispered and Willow smiled in return, "hi." They lay silent for a long moment, then Willow's brows furrowed. "Where are we?"

"Our room."

"How did we get here?"

"I don't know. I actually, um, don't remember anything from last night."

"Oh. Nothing? Not even..." Willow had a sad look on her face. She couldn't remember much either, but she did remember the date, and the handholding, and the near kiss had it not been for stupid Xander. Knowing that Tara didn't remember it...well, major bummer came to mind. Tara noticed the look on Willow's face and knew right away what the redhead was thinking. She smiled shyly and reached out for Willow's hand. "Shh...I remember that." She pulled Willow's hand up and placed a soft kiss on its back. "I remember our date. I remember going to dinner, and what you said..."

"What I..."

Tara nodded, "and I remember going to the movie theater and holding your hand."

"You do?"

"Yes, and I remember going to the Grotto and finding Buffy. And I..."

"And you what?"

"And I um, I remember wanting to...kiss you."

"You did?"

"I do."

"You do?"

"Yes."

"I do too. Well not the kissing me part, but the kiss part...and you...me with the wanting...the kiss...and...ahhh..."

Tara smiled at the adorable redhead. "Will-"

"Tara I want to kiss you!" Willow blurted out then she blushed bright red when she realized she had almost shouted. "Oops, sorry. That came out a little louder than intended." She giggled and smiled elfishly at Tara.

"You can but um..."

"But?" Willow scrunched up her nose. She didn't like the word 'but' at all.

"Maybe not now...because, you know, um...morning breath and all." Tara put three fingers over her mouth to cover it.

Willow giggled and wrapped one arm around Tara effectively pulling her closer, "Tara, I don't care." She pulled Tara's hand away, revealing the most alluring pair of lips she had ever encountered.

"You don't?"

"No...Tara...I-I've wanted to kiss you for weeks. No way I'm gonna let a silly little thing like morning breath stop me, now that I can. Besides, you don't have morning breath."

"I don't?"

"No, well, of course you have morning breath, I mean, it's morning and you're breathing so hello! Morning breath. But um, you don't have the icky please-brush-your-teeth-before-you-kill-someone morning breath. You just have the yummy Tara-breath and-"

"Will?" Tara cupped Willow's cheek with her hand and Willow leaned into the touch, "can I kiss you now?"

"Please..."

Tara moved her hand to the back of Willow's neck and pulled her roommate towards her. Their lips met and Tara rolled onto her back, pulling Willow on top of her.

Shy, hesitant kisses turned passionate and intense as the two witches became more confident. Lips danced, tongues dueled, and hands caressed. They rolled around in Tara's bed laughing and kissing and exploring until Willow's stomach rumbled loudly, stopping any further discovery. Tara pulled her lips away from Willow's pulse point as she burst into giggles. Willow sighed and cursed her hungry stomach.

Tara sat up, straddling the redhead and pulled her up towards her. She wrapped her arms around Willow's waist and kissed her once on the lips. "Come on sweetie, let's get you some breakfast..." She eyed the two mochas placed on her nightstand, "I bought mochas earlier but they've probably turned cold by now."

Willow turned her head and saw the two cups, "oh, you bought mochas baby? That's so sweet." She kissed Tara. "Thank you for the mocha baby." She kissed her again, "sorry I didn't drink it though," another kiss, "your lips distracted me." She gave Tara another kiss that lingered until Tara's stomach proclaimed its hunger too. "You hungry too baby?" Tara nodded, "starving." She moved off of Willow and they made their way out of bed. They looked down at their rumbled clothes and chuckled. "Quick shower then breakfast?" Willow suggested and Tara nodded her agreement.

***

"Should we be worried about this black-out thing?" Willow asked after her shower. "It could be a hell-mouth thing. I think I should go find Buffy. See if she remembers anything, and maybe ask her to join us for breakfast."

"Okay." Tara nodded as she was getting dressed, her back discreetly turned away from Willow (a mutual decision) as the redhead got dressed as well.

Willow zipped up her jeans and adjusted her t-shirt. "I'm done, can I turn around now?"

"Not yet." Tara looked down at her panties-and-bra-clad self. "I'm not entirely decent."

"Oh, okay." Willow willed herself not to peek around. The temptation was killing her so she decided to leave the room to avoid any distraction. "I'll just back out the door then and go see Buffy."

"Okay."

***

Willow knocked on Buffy's door and waited. She knocked again, and again. She knocked six times before all things hell-mouthy infiltrated her brain and she was sure Buffy was trapped in a big frog-hell-dimension. Finally she tried the handle. The door was unlocked so she peeked inside and was relieved when she saw Buffy sitting in her yummy-sushi-pajamas by her desk staring at the TV.

"Oh, Buffy. Thank god you're here."

"TV is a good thing. Bright colors. Music. Tiny little people." The slayer hugged the TV in appreciation.

"Um, are you feeling all right Buff?"

Buffy looked up from the TV and furrowed her brows at Willow, "I'm suffering the after-ness of a bad night of...badness."

Willow winced slightly and took one step closer to her friend, "You didn't. Not with Parker again?"

Buffy shook her head, "No, with four really smart guys."

Willow cringed at thought. Ouch. "Four? Oh. Ow. Oh Buffy, are you okay? Do you wanna talk about it?"

"I went to see Xander. Then I saw Parker. Then came beer."

"Oh, Buffy? You got drunk?" This just can't get more disturbing. Willow knew alcohol was a bad idea. It was exactly why she stayed away from it.

"I'm not the only one, you were there too."

Willow spluttered in shock, "whaa..." I was wrong.

"And Tara," Buffy added unaware of Willow's turmoil.

I was so wrong. Willow flopped down on the floor in defeat. Things just got a little more disturbing . She groaned and covered her face with her hands. Oh my god...yesterday I hadn't slept with one person. Now all of a sudden I've been with, ewww, six people? What the hell happened?

"So how did it happen?" Willow mumbled in her hands and shook her head. Do I really wanna know?

"What did you say?"

"The group sex...how did it happen?"

Buffy laughed and kicked Willow playfully with her foot, "Gutter face."

"So no group sex?"

"No! Just lots and lots of beer. It's nice. Foamy. Comforting. It's just beer."

Oh thank god. Willow fell backwards onto the floor and looked up at the ceiling sighing in relief. No group sex! And the beer did explain why she and Tara didn't remember anything then, but shouldn't there be a hangover involved? Not that I know how a hangover really works. And why was I drinking? I don't drink, and neither does Tara.

"Buffy, do you remember how me and Tara got home last night?"

"Buffy carried you."

Willow lifted her head up to regard her friend. "Huh?"

"I carried you. You and Tara blacked out, so when Xander's shift finished, I carried you to his car, he drove us to the dorm, and I carried you to your room."

"Oh. Thanks Buff."

"Sure Wills." Willow got up and dusted her pants down. "Me and Tara were gonna go out for breakfast, wanna come with? Maybe you could explain this whole beer-drinking-badness to the both of us?"

Buffy got up and nodded. "Okay." She made her way to the door and opened it. "I'm really craving something fatty and salty."

"Um, Buff." Willow gestured at Buffy's outfit, "getting dressed might be a good idea."

Buffy looked down at her pajamas, "oh, right." She walked to her closet and grabbed a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Willow sat down on the extra-bed-make-shift-couch while she waited. Last night was a total blank in her mind and she couldn't stop wondering what had happened.

"Hey Buffy, did I do something stupid while I was drunk?"

Buffy turned around as she finished putting her t-shirt on. "Naaa...not at all. Well, unless you call having hot lesbian sex in front of four guys stupid."

***

"Hot lesbian sex?!" Tara's eyes were wide and her mouth opened and closed but no sound came out.

Willow giggled at her ... girlfriend? Hmm, I'll have to ask. "That's exactly how I reacted."

"So no hot lesbian um, sex?" Tara looked at Willow and then at Buffy who rolled her eyes.

"Will you stop saying hot lesbian sex? People are staring at us." The slayer slid lower in the booth trying to hide from view. She picked at her omelet and gazed at Willow's plate with longing. Why didn't I get pancakes?

"You started it," Willow pointed out and took another bite of her syrupy covered pancake. She licked her lips of the remaining syrup and took a sip of her orange juice.

"Okay, fine. But can we move on now?"

"So...no um, HLS?"

Willow giggled again, "no baby. No HLS. Apparently we just made out for a bit, then fell asleep together."

Buffy took a sip of her orange juice and cleared her throat, "Okay so here's what happened..."

***

"Whoa!" Buffy jumped from her seat and climbed onto the table. "Hot, lesbian sex about to happen." The four guys clambered onto the table as well and leaned over to watch the two witches, "yeeeaah."

Tara covered Willow's face with kisses, then took purchase of her lips and deepened the kiss immediately. Willow groaned and fumbled with Tara's shirt, pulling it halfway up and slipping her hands underneath. Tara kissed Willow fiercely and turned more in her seat. She pushed herself up on one leg so she could bring the other one underneath her and onto the bench.

Buffy's eyes widened and something triggered in her beer-hazed brain. Whoa! Who knew they could do that. And hello! Hands! Hands in interesting places. Buffy slowly sat back and shook her head. I should not be watching this. She scrambled back and pulled her beer buds with her. They grunted in protest but she pushed them away from the table. She pointed to the bar and handed one of the guys an empty pitcher, "more beer."

All four of them nodded dumbly and trudged towards the bar. Xander noticed the commotion and came up to Buffy, "hey, what's going on."

"Nothing, just Will and Tara having sex, no biggie."

"Say what?" Xander peeked around the table and counted his lucky stars. Oh my! He grinned sheepishly at Buffy then looked back at the two witches. He felt a familiar tightness in his pants and tried to cover it with his rag. "Um, I'll be right back," he mumbled and made a quick dash to the bathroom.

Buffy watched her friend run off and cringed, "Xander! Could you be more disturbing?!"

***

"Ewww..." Willow shuddered.

"I know. Can you believe Xander? Anyway, the guys and me sort of moved to another table for a while and I'm not sure what happened with you two in the mean time. Xander's shift ended thirty minutes later and when we went to get you, you were asleep..."

***

Tara and Willow lay snuggled together on the narrow bench. The blonde was sprawled over the redhead who had wrapped her arms firmly around Tara, keeping her near. One of Tara's hands served as a pillow for Willow and the other was under Willow's shirt.

Xander and Buffy stood side by side; their arms crossed over their chest as they studied their friends. Buffy had given up trying to wake up the two witches and had retreated back towards Xander.

"They're not waking up, huh?"

"Nope."

"Is it wrong of me to be slightly disappointing with the lack of, um...the lack of lack of clothes?"

"So, just disappointed with the clothes?" Buffy clarified.

"Um, yeah."

"Yes."

"Huh?"

"Yes, it's very wrong of you to be disappointed that Willow and Tara are still wearing their clothes Xander, and by the way..." Buffy hit Xander over the head.

"Owie." Xander huffed and gave Buffy a sideway glare.

"You deserved it Xander."

"Fine."

They went back to studying their friends. Buffy interrupted the silence a minute later. "So...what do we do?"

"I don't know...you're the slayer, you figure it out."

"You're the bartender, it's your job to know these things."

"When do I ever know anything concerning my odd jobs?"

"Good point." Buffy furrowed her brows in contemplation. "Are you driving?"

"Yep."

"Get your car. I'll carry them to the Xand-mobile and you take us to the dorms."

"Okay dokay."
