Summary: Willow and Tara meet through the Summers’ family right before World War Two. After Pearl Harbor, they enlist and meet various others throughout the war.

PROLOGUE:
Tara quietly poured a cup of coffee into her mug, then sitting at the oak table, letting it warm her hands. Though she enjoyed the week every summer when Denise would stay with her and Willow, their 7 year old granddaughter was also quite the ball of energy. Willow sat across from the blonde, completely engrossed in her Sudoku puzzle. Looking up, she noticed Tara watching her with a half-mouth smile.

Willow’s cheeks soon matched the former color of her hair, before the gray strands had begun their invasion and conquest of her fiery mane. Setting the pen next to the finished puzzle, Willow caught a human-shaped figure hiding behind the counter. Winking at Tara, she said, "I guess we'll have to go ahead and start breakfast since Denise is sleeping in."

As Tara rose to start cooking, she saw the young brunette run out from behind the counter. "Granny Tara, don't start without me! I wasn't asleep, I was hiding behind the counter."

Orbs of azure twinkled with mirth. "Were you trying to spy on your grannies?"

Later that afternoon, the three stepped into the attic, awash in its hazy dust. Their mission was clear, to find the Mexican Train dominoes. Ever since Denise had been taught the game by her grandmothers, it was requested during each subsequent visit. The domino set wasn't used much at any other time, so "Can we play Mexican Train?" came to be a euphemism for an excuse to go play in the attic with a round of the game at the end.

White filing boxes lined the east wall, each neatly marked in Willow's hand. Each stack was categorized and alphabetized, so there really wasn't much in the way of pure discovery. The little girl started with her favorite box, the one that held all of the old Halloween costumes from years past, pulling out the witch costume her mother had worn at her age.

However, there was a little brown box next to the large oval mirror in the corner with a box under it labeled "Correspondence", in a place that seemed almost forgotten. Almost. Denise hadn't remembered ever seeing it before during her previous visits.

"Grandma Willow, why doesn't that brown box have a name?" She asked, pointing to it.

Again, orbs of azure looked to Willow, now in conjunction with Denise’s henna-colored eyes. Tara's father had died 3 months prior, and she and Donnie had gone through his estate, packing the letters and documents into two separate boxes.

"That box belonged to Granny Tara's Daddy." Willow explained, though her voice was quiet.

Denise remembered her Great-grandpa as a quiet man, with lots of wrinkles and all of his hair had moved from his head to his nose. He was usually in his brown recliner, reading. If it was a paperback book, she could crawl into his lap and read with him, though some of the words she didn't know. If it was the paper, she'd stand in front and read the other side until he lowered it and asked with that deep voice, "How are ya kid?"

Tara cleared her throat, hoping the tears could stay out of her eyes. They would, for a time.

The young girl knew her Granny was sad. Maybe exploring would cheer her up. "Can I look through the other box?" Two green eyes pleaded with blue. After a moment's consideration, the blonde (the inevitable gray hadn't invaded her head yet) nodded.

Just posting the prologue for now, to see if there is any interest. Hope y'all enjoyed reading and have a great day.

You have an amazing writing style. World War Two is perhaps my favorite era to study. So i can't wait to see how this turns out. Please continue.

wow. this is great.
starting at the end, and I'm guessing we'll see the past through what ever they'll find in the box. sort of a flashback thing.

I love seeing older Willow & Tara.

hope to read more soon

Histchic,
I too am enamored of the World War Two era, so much so that I went out and got a university degree in History and use it in my pursuit of the fiction writing craft.
But enough about me, sorry...
I am quite taken by your raising the curtain of time upon Willow and Tara and portraying them as grandparents.
Photographs and memories can spur conversations about the past and can help families grow closer togeher especially across generations as we have arranged here in the attic.
I can deny chicks in chainmail nothing.

Wow. Yall liked it. :blush Just thought I'd pop in and see the fb and I have some! Wow, such an ego boost. Thank you lovely kittens.

Dianneswillowtree: Let you have it eh? You weren't supposed to find out my fiendish plan, but ok. *grin* the pink elephant made my day. Thanks for the fb.

HersAlways: You're making me blush! That makes me happy that you enjoy my style. Hope you enjoy Ch 1.

Willowlover: That's what I was going for, to see if you Kittens liked my style, and you did. I'll never stop writing, whether it's for others or just for me.

WhiteWitch: I've found that the easiest/most normal way to do history is through flashback (unless there's some sort of majick afoot...for another story maybe?). I've always kinda flash-forwarded seeing W/T as an old married couple, they just have that comfort level with each other.

Taralicious: What a great reason to get a degree in history! One of my fondest memories is when my grandma would tell me about when she was little. Incidentally, the scene in the kitchen is loosely based on when I would go visit my grandparents, with that sort of humor.

Chapter 1 should be (barring any disasters) up next week. Thanks again!

*peeks around sheepishly*

Hello again. Kittens, my deepest apologies about getting this started then dropping it for so long. Please forgive me?

Hemiola: There is good news and bad news. The good news is Chapter one is on its way. Part of the delay was overextending myself, realizing how much research i would need after I had already jumped in...and I want everything to be accurate...I'm a bit of a perfectionist at times. And perhaps it wasn't the smartest idea in the world to think I could do weekly deadlines like the other writers here who have been doing this for a while...and this is my first time. Thanks again for all your help with the story thus far.

The bad news is a bit of tragedy. Around the time I started this story, my grandpa had an accident from which he didn't recover and recently passed away. But, he's in a better place and I'm thankful for that.

So, hopefully this story will resume in the nearest future. Thanks agian for all of you that read and enjoyed it. More to come.

Beth
