NEW FIC: She was never gone, She was with me Updated 19/03

Postby a willow angel » Mon Mar 06, 2006 6:04 am

I know a lot of kittens here like angst, and I just had this idea for a really angsty fic and went along with it to see what i could make of it.
I really like feedback of any kind, so i'd love to hear any thoughts/reactions you guys have to this story.

Title: She was never gone, she was with me

Rating: I'm not quite sure, maybe PG 13 or maybe even M 15

Disclaimer: I don't own anything or anyone. Willow, Tara, Buffy, Dawn, etc. belong to Joss.

Feedback: Yes please!!! Pretty please?

Summary: Willow reminisces her loss

Warning: character death. high angst
Willow remembered the mingled sensations of joy and love searing through her body as she watched Tara affectionately place the last item of baby clothing into the tiny oak closet. Her lover stepped back and admired the room. It was perfect; reflecting the tender and care that was put into it’s construction with a balance of love, passion and serenity. Just like their relationship. The protection spells were yet to be done, but the room felt like a sanctuary even without the magical guard.

The room was ornamented with pastel colours. The walls, a deep cream colour, matched the soft beige carpet, which complemented the light pink décor.

There stood a tiny cradle just left to the center of the room, carefully crafted by Xander and given to the witches as a baby shower present. Already soft fleece blankets adorned with pale pink lace filled the cradle, soaking in the warm rays of light filtered through the window.

A plastic mobile was hung over the crib. It spun slowly making the array of miniature toy moons, stars and kittens dance. The kittens swung a little unevenly. They weren’t originally part of the mobile; two little witches were. But Willow refused to allow their child to grow up with the green skinned, broomstick holding, black robe wearing witchy stereotypes, so she replaced them with Miss Kitty Fantastico toy look-alikes. She didn’t feel too bad mangling they toy as it had been a present from Anya and the two had not learned to see completely eye to eye just yet. Neither was willing to admit it, but part of the reason their little ‘rift’ had not yet mended was because the two had grown to enjoy the playful banter between one another.

Willow crossed the room and placed her arms protectively over Tara’s tummy. The bulge was steadily growing, giving Tara’s form an even more rounded appearance. Even though there have been a string of incidents where Tara would complain about ‘being fat’, Willow had only fallen more and more in love with Tara’s changing body, knowing that it housed the product of their love.

Tara leaned back into the arms of her wife. Laying her head back on Willow’s shoulder she let out a sigh of relief. They were ready to bring this baby into the world. Having gotten everything prepared, thanks to Willow’s wondrous organization skills, they were now running exactly on schedule, which was something not many parents-to-be could savor.

Hearing her lover’s sigh Willow frowned, wondering if anything was bothering the blonde. Tara’s hormones have been rampant lately, to say the least, and the blonde was susceptible to dramatic mood swings. One moment Tara would be laughing at the shape of the table lamp, the next crying over the colour of the living room rug.

She squeezed her wife closer, placing a sweet kiss on her temple, before asking if anything was the matter.

Tara turned around to face Willow.

“No, everything is perfect. It’s just like it should be. I know people always say life doesn’t go according to plan, but right now, at this moment, it’s like it’s all fallen into place.”

Willow smiled. “ I know what you mean.”

Drawing her lover back to her body Willow began running her hands over her back, causing Tara to giggle as her fingers traced over a ticklish spot.

“Hey!” she playfully protested, squirming in the embrace.

“Hey right back at ya,” Willow retorted, pretending she had no idea what Tara was getting at.

“Watch it missy, I know where your most ticklish spot is,” Tara teasingly threatened reaching just above Willow’s ribs.

It was the redhead’s turn to squirm as she laughed and retaliated by reaching under Tara’s shirt to get better access to her tickle spot.

They were both so immersed in each other that neither heard Dawn coming up the stairs. The young teen stood in the doorway smiling for a few moments and wondering when she would find a Tara or a Willow of her own, before quickly reaching into her bag for her new camera.

She had just taken up photography in school and fell in love with taking pictures of anything and everything, but her favorite subjects were the two witches. They were both incredibly photogenic and their love just radiated off the film. It was there as plain as day; so much so that whenever Dawn would show anyone pictures of the two wiccas, they would instantly pick up on the fact that the two were together, even when no physical contact was visible in the photograph.

She set her lens to focus on the couple, pressing the shutter release quickly and capturing the lovers in each other’s arms.

The soft click and bright flash of lights drew Willow and Tara’s attention away from each other and onto Dawn. Seeing that the teen was grasping a camera in her hands, they blushed realizing that they had just been caught during a moment of intimacy. Although they didn’t mind Dawn seeing them kiss and touch each other- to a degree of course- they were both a little camera shy.

Dawn smiled cheekily and protested. “It was a Kodak moment! Except you know, taken with a better camera, coz Kodak is way overrated.”

The two lovers looked at each other and burst out laughing, launching themselves at the unsuspecting teen and instigating another tickle attack.
Hot tears cascaded down Willow’s cheeks as she clutched the photo that Dawn had taken that day. Willow’s fingers traced the prominent outline of Tara’s belly. She wished she could feel the softness of her curves once more, the warmth of her skin, the passion of her touch. But that was all gone. Only photographs remained of Willow’s once-perfect life.

She closed her eyes and tried to imagine her lover’s warm breath trailing along her skin, inspiring goose bumps as it hit her sensitive flesh. She remembered the sensation so well. It used to make her writhe and moan, but now it only caused her to whimper her dead lover’s name as her heart broke once again. She wanted to touch her so bad, to run her fingers along her supple body, to knead her quivering flesh while they made love, to hear her whisper her name in urgency, to let her know that in those moments when she lost control someone would be there to hold her and make sure she was safe and loved.

Yet with every pleasant memory of her lover, came the memory of losing her. The shadow of the painful memory loomed over all the joyous ones, creating bittersweet sensations.
“Baby, I think we’re out of nappies.”

Tara madly rushed around the house, searching for a diaper bag.

Since Amber’s birth this was probably the first time that they had run out of diapers. The two had a hectic week and the emergency box they were relying on had apparently been used up the day before.

Willow emerged from the bathroom holding their freshly bathed daughter. Amber drowsily yawned as she relaxed against her mommy’s breast, letting her eyes fall closed. She was oblivious to the mini panic attack her mothers were having.

“I just changed her into her last nappy, “ Willow said, keeping her voice low so as not to disturb the dozing infant.

Tara nodded, biting her lip. “I’ll just go the shops and get some more.”

“No! Baby look out there, it’s pouring and a power line got knocked over by the storm so the streetlights are out.” Willow protested frantically, nodding her head towards the black abyss outside the window.

“Willow, I’ll be okay. It’s just a little rain,” Tara reasoned. “Otherwise what are we going to do when Amber needs a diaper change? The one she has on now won’t last her until morning ”

Willow chewed on her lip.

“How about I go?”

“Sweetie, just don’t worry. I will be back in ten minutes.”

Tara moved to grab her coat and keys. “Besides, Amber is all comfy in your arms, and you know how hard it is to get her to sleep.”

At that moment Amber began to fuss.

Willow raised her eyebrows. “See, even she knows it’s not a good idea to go out now.”

Tara rolled her eyes, but nevertheless moved toward her wife and child. She captured her love’s lips, planting a brief but passionate kiss on her mouth with a promise of more later.

She then gently kissed Amber’s tiny head. “I’ll be back before you know it. Be good now sweetie.”

It had been half an hour since Tara left for the shops. The rain had not eased up and Willow was panicking.

Amber was fussing in Willow’s arms. She wondered whether the infant was picking up on her anxiety. Willow paced the room, rocking Amber in her arms and crooning softly to settle the child.

The TV was buzzing softly in the background, with Ray Cobbet reporting on Nightly News. Buffy usually watched the program to see if any odd and unnatural accidents or deaths have occurred around Sunnydale so she could have a heads up on any new nasties around town.

Willow wasn’t actively listening, only picking up on a few words here and there.

“… is going to continue at least until…”

“…spotted around midday…”

“…accident just off Rovello drive…”

Willow froze. Accident just off Rovello drive?

She quickly crossed the room, turning the volume up on the television. Her heart was racing, her breath becoming shallow as she listened for any mention of the parties involved in the accident.

“A young woman was killed in the crash. The driver’s license identified the woman as Tara Rosenberg Maclay”

Willow let out a strangled cry, covering her mouth with a shaking hand. She backed up into the couch, almost falling onto it. She would have collapsed if not for the precious life in her arms.

Pressing Amber closer, she began to sob. This couldn’t be happening. There must have been a mistake. Her Tara couldn’t be dead.

She promised she’d be back soon. She was going to walk through the door any minute now and say how sorry she was for making them worry. She’d say how the line at the shop was long because they had a new trainee on the register and he didn’t know what he was doing. Then she would take Willow into her arms and kiss her senseless, suggesting they put Amber to bed and go upstairs so Tara could give her the smoochies she had promised earlier.

But Willow’s fantasy crumbled as an image of Tara’s drivers license appeared on the screen.

“NOOOO” she screamed.

The sudden noise startled Amber who began to cry.

Buffy, also hearing the commotion, ran into the living room.

“Willow what’s the matter…”

Her voice trailed off as her eyes followed the direction of the redhead’s gaze, and she herself almost collapsed in shock and grief from what she saw. A mangled, bloody body of a young blonde female was being extracted from the wreckage of a car. The young woman was unmistakably Tara.

Willow starred at the screen. The scene changed to show the mangled car as the emergency workers began taking it apart. As a loose piece of metal was pried away, a bright yellow, box shaped object tumbled out from inside the car. A vibrant pink heading could be just made out. “Huggies Nappies”. The colourful package featuring happy teddy bears was clearly out of place among the broken glass and mangled metal.

Willow felt sick.

“I-I have to…I just have…”

Willow couldn’t finish her sentence. She couldn’t bring herself to voice her need to see her dead lover’s body for herself.

“Willow where are you going?” Buffy asked as the redhead shakily stood from the couch.

Willow just handed Buffy the wailing infant and headed out the door without bothering to grab a coat or umbrella.

Willow rushed around the corner. Rain blurred her vision but she only continued to run.

She should have been able to hear the sirens of the ambulance and police vehicles. She should have been blinded by the overwhelming brightness of the lights, as they contrasted to the blackness of the streets that engulfed her moments earlier. She should have felt the cold as the rain penetrated her clothing. But she didn’t. Her ears heard nothing but the sickening sound of scraping metal as the last remnants of the door where removed from their distorted vehicle. Her eyes saw nothing but her lover’s bloody body being lowered into the black body bag. Her body felt numb.

“WAIT” She yelled.

“WAIT”

She ran the last few feet before being promptly stopped by a police officer.

“I’m sorry miss, but you’re not authorized to be here.”

“You don’t understand.” She cried. “You don’t understand. She’s – “

Before she could complete her sentence the police officer cut her off.

“I understand that she’s probably a relative of yours but you’re not authorized –“

It was Willow’s turn to cut him off.

“You don’t understand,” she lashed out, her voice harsh and thick from crying.

“She’s my everything”

She shoved past him, running through the bright yellow tape placed to stop people entering the scene.

“Hey,” he yelled out, chasing after her.

She collapsed next to her lover, trying to keep control of her violently shaking body.
Her trembling hand scraped along the concrete as she unsteadily reached for her lover. She grasped Tara’s hand in her own but then instantly recoiled at the coldness of her skin. Tara’s hands were never cold.

Willow’s world began to spin making her dizzy and sick. Without warning she began heaving onto the sidewalk.

The next moment she felt unfamiliar arms roughly pulling her away. She struggled against the intrusive grip with no avail.

The last thing she remembered was how bizarre the combination of vomit and blood looked on the wet concrete road.
A wail from the other room snapped Willow back into the now. She hurried into the room next door, gently scooping up the tiny bawling redhead into her arms and cradling her against her chest.

Willow checked to make sure her diaper was dry and that she wasn’t hungry, before settling into the rocking chair with Amber. She wished Tara could be there to sing one of her sweet songs to calm their child, but instead Willow settled for telling Amber about her beautiful mother. It had become almost ritualistic, but Willow was determined to make sure their daughter grew up knowing what an amazing person Tara was and more importantly just how much she had loved Amber.
Six years later

Willow walked into the kitchen laying her briefcase down next to the counter. Amber was already sitting at the kitchen table happily munching away at her bowl of cereal.

“Morning mommy,” she grinned her toothless smile as Willow walked over to the table and planted a soft kiss on top of the girl’s head.

“Morning sweetie. Are you just about ready for school?”

Amber nodded.

“I just have to make my lunch.”

She hopped off her chair and went to place her empty cereal bowl in the sink, beginning to hum a tune. It was something she did after a really good night of sleep, or so that’s what Willow chalked it up to. She listened to her daughter’s humming, and occasional signing. Willow loved to hear Amber sing. She obviously inherited Tara’s voice.

She smiled as she began to sort out her briefcase, momentarily glancing at Amber clumsily making her lunch. Bits of tomato and cheese littered the counter and Willow made a mental note to remind the girl to clean up after she was done. She was about to go back to sorting a large file, when something made her freeze.

She focused on the child who was happily immersed in singing a tune Willow had not heard in years.

“A-Amber, sweetie, where did you learn that song?”

Willow knew the song very well. It was the same song Tara would sing to her whenever she was upset or couldn’t sleep. The first time Tara sang it she explained to Willow that it was the song her mother would sing to her when she was sick or when something was troubling her. Willow however never sang to Amber, always being too self-conscious of her singing voice.

She stared at Amber waiting for the child to reply.

Amber turned to face her mom and simply answered. “Mamma sings it to me.”

Willow’s face paled and she felt lightheaded. She knew that Amber always called her Mommy, always reserving Mamma for when they talked about…

She must have gotten mixed up, Willow reasoned.

“No honey, I never sang you that song,” Willow gently countered.

Amber shook her head, her forehead crinkling with concentration and her blue eyes shinning with determination. She wasn’t used to having to explain things to her Mommy. It was usually her Mommy that had to explain things to her.

She focused hard, trying to tell her Mommy that it was her Mamma who would sing to her. Her Mamma, who would come at night and stand next to her bed while the moon would shine through her hair.

She tried to think of the right words to say so as not to make her Mommy cry, as she often did when her Mamma was mentioned. “No, not you Mommy. Mamma sings it to me.”

Willow’s heart began to beat faster and tears threatened to spill. She felt her throat close up, but one word managed to escape her lips.

“Tara”

And at that moment she knew that Tara was never really gone.

that was heartwrenchingly beautiful. at a time in my life where i thought i could cry no more, and that i would forever be out of tears, i learn that there are still plenty left. you have captured loss so well. i could feel her heart breaking, and her world collapsing, and the tears welled up in my eyes the same as they did hers. i used a bunch of words there but in all honesty i have none that can explain it. besides the fact that its very well written, and excellent.

This was lovely. writerfreak said it much better than I can, and I can't think of the right words so I'll just have to leave it at that.

It was lovely, though.

Um...hello there. I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying this story. Your writing is simply amazing and i don't think I've ever felt so emotional after reading only one chapter before.

Your writing is flawless and carries with it this very intense, emotional kind of resonance. I actually felt like crying throughout the whole thing, really crying.

They way they were with each other in the nursery was so realistic and it really had this feel of completeness and relaxation. I loved your description of the nursery and all the little details you added about taking the witches off the mobile because she didn't want Amber growing up with that stereotype. And Willow's admittance to herself that she and Anya had grown to enjoy their banter over the years was very human--if you know what I mean.

I like this story’s concept. Willow raising Amber and the girl turning out as she had is very believable. I like that they talk about Tara and refer to her as Mamma-- which really helps to make her a "real" person for Amber. That is so important.

There was just one thing that I found hard to believe. Tara got into an accident and died and it was on the news before her family was notified. I'm not sure how often that happens, but I don't think it's a lot. Police usually notify family members first and since they obviously had Tara’s address and it was so close to the scene of the accident I'm sure they would have come over, even if they couldn't call because of phone lines or something.

Willow finding out about Tara the way she did was terrible. Man, I could really feel her pain in that moment, and when she had to push the cop aside just to get to where Tara had been---well, I was almost in tears.

You write so simply yet everything is so full of complex emotion and description. I like that a lot.

To say that I am looking forward to more of this story would be an understatement. I am absolutely praying for more of this fic, sitting on the edge of my seat, heart pounding, wanting more of this soul grabbing tale.

hiya!

wow! i am totally amazed with this story! you really weren't kidding with the high angst warning... in just a few sentences you were able to capture in perfect imagery the history these two women shared... the love between them... that when the moment of devastation to willow arrived, i was totally swept away and my heart broke for willow at that moment too... the next six years have been good to willow and amber... and i wasn't surprised at all with amber's admission that her mamma had been visiting her at night... that's just the sort of thing tara would do... i'm a little surprised though that she never visited willow... or maybe she did, she just never woke willow up...

really fantastic tale! utterly beautiful! :clap

Wow. I really wasn't prepared for that much angst! I mean, yeah, you warned us but this was so heart-wrenching... I can't even put it in words. Very well written obviously to make me feel this way.
I was a little mad at the officer for holding Willow back but I know he was only keeping her from seeing the body...
I hope you will continue this. Somehow. :x

Hey guys, first of all, i have to say THANK YOU so much to everyone who left feedback. I love it!!
Second, I know this story was pulled for a bit coz it didn't look like it complied with the Pens rules, but there will be at least another part to give Willow and Tara a happy ending.

writerfreak- Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm really glad the story evoked an emotional response from you. When people tell me that something I did (provided it's in an artistic sense not in a b-i-t-c-h-y sense and provided that it's designed to be sad) made them tear up or cry, i feel like i did something right. :)

Candleshoe-Thank you for reading and leaving feedback. Even though sometimes people feel like what they wanted to say has been said, it's still really nice to know that another person enjoyed the story, so thank you!!!

Dianneswillowtree- I'm glad you're liking the story, and I've already written most of the next part, so it should be up soon hopefully.

Willowlover- Thanks not hating me :-D I know that every w/t fan is upset about Tara's death and I was worried that people would be a bit mad coz I killed her again. Sometimes though, i feel like when someone loses a loved one, their reaction to the loss can show just how much they loved that person, in a way that can't be shown when they're alive.
For example, when Willow lost Tara in the show, she tried to destroy the world. She didn't want exist without Tara. Nothing mattered without her, and it just showed how Tara really was her entire world.

Emms- Thank you so much for all your lovely feedback and support!!
The mods put the thread back up now (yay) because it's tbc, so now it complies with the rules.

And Willow's admittance to herself that she and Anya had grown to enjoy their banter over the years was very human--if you know what I mean.

The banter between Willow and Anya was something I really enjoyed throughout season five, but underneath it all, they grew to care for one another, and to me it was just how they sometimes showed their affection for one another. A lot of the times, it's how me and my friends communicate.

I like this story’s concept. Willow raising Amber and the girl turning out as she had is very believable. I like that they talk about Tara and refer to her as Mamma-- which really helps to make her a "real" person for Amber. That is so important.

I really wish I could take credit for that, but I got the idea from many other fanfic writers who refer to Tara as Mamma and Willow as Mommy. But I think it does work well to give Tara her own role in Amber's life and to prevent confusion.

I'm glad you pointed that out. I really do appreciate constructive feedback coz it helps develop my writing and I totally agree with you. I just really wanted to have Willow witness the scene, and still deny it's reality. I also knew how I would write that scene, and while I was writing it I knew it wasn't really what would happen in real life, but at that time I couldn't think of another way of portraying it.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story though. Thank you for reading and leaving feedback :flower

tarebear- Heya

wow! i am totally amazed with this story! you really weren't kidding with the high angst warning

Lol, I actually was worried that after all my warnings it wouldn't be angsty enough. But it turns out that it all worked out fine on the angst front.

i'm a little surprised though that she never visited willow... or maybe she did, she just never woke willow up

I think Tara did visit Willow, but Willow just never saw her. She watched over both Amber and Willow. There's a little bit about it in my next part.

I'm happy you liked the portrayal of their love. I think the love between Willow and Tara is so strong, and I really hoped I could do it justice.

Thanks heaps for reading and reviewing!!

Useful_Oxymoron- Awww, I'm sorry. But i promise I'll fix it in the next part. ;-)
I'm glad liked it though.

eirnlove- lol, there's definately going to be more. I'm obliged to give Tara and Willow a happy ending. ;-)

AlysonGoddess- I think the next part will cheer you up. :) I'm glad you're liking it so far.

caz- Yep, definately gonna continue it, but it's not going to be a long running fiction, because I don't think I could give it the dedication I want to with uni starting up again. There's going to be another part or maybe two.

Willow Watcher- There's more :) lol. I hope you'll like the next part too, which will be up soon.

WillowRulez- I'm glad you liked the angst. There will be some more on the next part.
The officer was annoying, but I figured people wouldn't really be allowed to walk into a crash scene just like that.

Guppy- Thank you heaps for your comments!! I hope the next part won't dissapoint. :)

LesbianJedi87- lol, like i said before, i promise more angst in the next part. Although there will be some nice parts too, or at least I hope people will find them nice. Thanks for reading!!!

Scortor- I'm glad you enjoyed the story. The next part is already partly written so there will be more up soon.

cantbefredless-

wow.. is all i have to say

Hehe, wow's are very good, so thank you. I'm happy you liked it.

Hey Kittens,

I know I said I'd have the next part up soon, so I'm sorry it took this long to finally update.
Once again, thank you to everyone who left feedback. Hopefully you guys will enjoy this part.

Feedback: Yes please!!! Pretty please?
Amber walked over to her Mommy. Her tiny hand softy connected with Willow’s tearstained cheek.

“Feel mommy,” she softly whispered, wiping away Willow’s tears.

Willow closed her eyes. She could feel her daughter’s gentle touch. It reminded her of Tara so much. Amber had Tara’s hands. As much as her daughter’s touch reminded her of Tara usually, at that moment she felt as if it was really Tara caressing her cheek.

She savored the sensation.

The redhead however almost bolted as a familiar voice sounded in her ears. If this wasn’t real, she couldn’t live through losing her again.

Darling, open your eyes

“Tara?”

Willow’s voice broke and tears cascaded down her cheeks. In the six years since her lover’s death, never had she experienced a memory that vivid of her.

Defying the voice, Willow kept her eyes closed, afraid that if she dare open them she would lose the wonderful feeling of warmth and safety that was coursing through her being.

“Mommy?”

A different voice broke the sensation.

“Did you see her Mommy?”

Willow shook her head.

“No, but I felt…what was that Amber?”

Amber smiled a knowing smile. She didn’t know the laws of nature or physics, not enough to question whether Mamma’s presence should have been possible.

“It was Mamma. She wants to say hello.”

Willow’s body shook with sobs.

“She knows you cry at night, but she says you’re strong. Like an azamon.”

Willow had to smile through her tears.

“Amazon, sweetie.”

Amber nodded, naive to the correction Willow made.

Amber was still learning to pronounce some words. Some parents would be bothered by the fact that their child was mispronouncing words, but Amber had been through a lot, and Willow sometimes worried that she was growing up too fast, so her childlike displays were never reprimanded.

Willow reached out to take Amber into her arms, placing the child on her lap. The miniature redhead snuggled into her mother’s embrace, and Willow pressed her cheek to the top of her daughter’s head.

“Baby, I need you to tell me about Mamma’s visits. How is she here?”

Amber looked into Willow’s eyes.

“I wished for her.”
Amber couldn’t sleep. Her blankets felt heavy and her pillow too lumpy, so she twisted and turned until she got so tangled up in her kitten print sheets that she almost tumbled out of the bed.

She huffed at Max, the stuffed dog with a missing eye, before pushing away her covers. Usually Max would make her feel better. He was a very good listener. Except tonight she had nothing to say, nothing that Max could understand anyway.

She walked over to the window and gazed out into the night sky. The moon was full, the stars twinkled brightly and the crickets chirped outside. She listened to the sounds of the night and the soft weeping that resonated from the other bedroom. Amber knew her Mommy was crying again. She was crying for her Mamma.

She remembered asking once why she cried at night. Her Mommy answered that it was because at night she didn’t have her Mamma to hold and it made her miss her just that much more. Amber climbed into bed with her that night and held her Mommy instead.

She wondered whether Mamma cried too because she missed them. The stars were an awfully long way away.

Amber sighed, and went to pick up to Max again.

“I wish Mommy had Mamma to make her happy again,” she whispered to the stuffed dog.

The tiny redhead didn’t see the extra bright star shooting through the sky that night, but she knew something had changed.

A warmth filled her little heart, a warmth that wasn’t there before but nevertheless felt like home. It reminded her of all those stormy nights that she spent cuddled up in her Mommy’s arms. She felt shielded from the bad stuff in the world, and finally let the drowsiness engulf her.

Amber let out a tiny yawn and as she climbed back under the covers, and as her eyes fell shut she swore she could see the beautiful specter of her Mamma standing over her bed, singing the sweetest song she’d ever heard.

“Mamma…”

She wanted to reach out to her, but her hand felt too heavy and her words died on her lips. She was very tired.
Amber didn’t remember much from the first visit, only that she thought her Mamma looked like an angel.

“She visits me lots now. She says she watches over both of us, and that she wishes she could see you smile more.”

The statement made Willow tear up more, but her heart fluttered with hope and love, and she let a full-blown smile grow on her face.

“W-would she visit me tonight?” Willow asked timidly.

She wanted to see Tara so badly. There was so much to tell her, to ask her. But there was also so much she wanted to do. To kiss her, to feel her, to taste her…but would she able to? Would she come as a ghost?

Willow wanted to ask Amber so much, but she didn’t want to overwhelm the child. She was sure that her non-stop crying for over the past quarter of an hour was alarming her enough.

Amber tilted her head, as if thinking about the question for a while, but Willow thought that perhaps Amber wasn’t thinking about it but rather asking Tara about it.

The child turned back to her mother.

“She wants to. She says she misses you, but she says the time must be right and then you’ll be able to see her.”

Willow nodded. She was slightly disappointed, and maybe if Tara were visiting anyone but their daughter she would have also been jealous, but she was glad that Tara was visiting Amber. She deserved to know their wonderful child, and Amber in turn deserved to know Tara’s love first hand.
She hoped the stories she’d told her of Tara conveyed how much she had loved her and always would love her, but she knew that no amount of words were powerful enough to let her know the extent of Tara’s love.

“Is she…Is she here? Talking to you now?” Willow wondered.

Amber scrunched her face up in concentration. She wasn’t sure how to explain such complex feelings yet. This wasn’t as simple as happy or angry, or even love and hurt. It was something that teachers didn’t teach in class. She had felt it for years, since her Mamma’s first visit, but she never had to explain it to anyone. It was just there, making her safe and warm.

“She’s always here Mommy, but at the same time she’s not. Her feelings are here but you can’t always talk to her. Well, you can talk to her, she’ll listen. She always listens, but she might not answer in words”

Amber thought a bit more before going on. She wanted to convey how she felt.

“Her love has never left us.”

Willow cast her mind back to a few minutes ago, when she felt the warmth coursing through her body. The warmth was pure Tara. It filled her with love, peace and safety, and Willow realized that it was the same sensation that she got when she felt the world was too much, and it was too hard to go on.

Willow carted the shopping trolley down the pasta isle. She picked up a packet or Amber’s favorite mushroom flavored pasta, before moving on to the next isle.

She went past many items she didn’t need, combs, headbands, lipstick purses, lip-glosses and other various vanity products, hoping to reach the shampoo section soon.

She was feeling rather irritated up to the point of reaching the diaper section. It seemed no matter where she went those brightly colored boxes always followed. She had to stop shopping at the previous supermarket because the “Huggies Nappies” were located right next to the toothpaste, and she couldn’t go past them without breaking down.

It seems this supermarket placed the Nappies right next to the shampoos. Willow felt tears well up in her eyes, she felt her throat close up, and her oxygen cut off. She found it hard to breathe, but part of her also didn’t want to. Sometimes Willow wondered if she would still be here if she didn’t have Amber to take care of.

She tried to ignore the grief she welling up inside her by taking a few steady steps towards the shampoos. She reached out to grasp a blue bottle of berry scented shampoo, but her hand was trembling with the effort of concealing her tears and the product slipped from her hold, landing on the floor with an echoing thud.

Scrambling on the floor to pick up the bottle, Willow lost her hold on her emotions and began to sob.

But somehow watching the blue goo leaking from the bottle and running into the cracks of the tile calmed the redhead. Blue, like Tara’s eyes, she thought, suddenly feeling stronger. A comforting warmth enveloped her body, and she managed to get off the floor, pay for her purchases and get through the rest of the day.

Sometimes Willow would feel guilty, because those times gave her hope. But at that moment she realized that she felt hope because Tara was there to give it to her.

Pressing Amber closer, she whispered, “I know what you mean sweetie.”
It was a few days since Willow's conversation with Amber, but the redhead had not stopped thinking about Tara's nightly visits to their daughter. Although knowing that Tara wasn't really gone made her heart lighter her days still left her drained emotionally. Not having Tara there with her still hurt.

It was close to midnight when Willow finally made it to bed. She was beyond exhausted but found herself unable to succumb to sleep. The blankets were warm, but she felt a chill run down her spine.

She sighed, rolling over to face the bedside table. The double bed felt too large. She still hadn’t got used to the excess amount of space.

She now faced a beautifully framed photograph of Tara. It was one of Willow’s favorite photos, taken in college, during one of their trips to the beach. They didn’t often go swimming but Tara loved the soft ocean breeze on a hot day. In the photograph she stood smiling in front of the ocean. The water reflected the sunlight, creating a glow behind the blonde and making her truly appear angelic.

Willow ran her fingers over the image. She drew the photograph close to her before placing a tender kiss on the glass of the frame. Blowing out a shaky breath, she allowed the nightly torrent of tears cascade down her cheeks.

“I wish you were here,” she said, her voice trembling and her eyes closing in pain.

“I am darling.”

Willow’s eyes shot open to see Tara standing right next to the bed. She was frozen, afraid that the blonde was an illusion or worse, but everything in her soul told her otherwise.

Moving hesitantly she gingerly reached out with one hand to touch Tara, expecting her fingers to go through the girl and almost jumping back in surprise when they met solid flesh.

“Tara”

Willow’s voice cracked as she softly spoke her lover’s name. Her body trembled as her hands began to explore her lover’s body. She didn’t know what she was looking for. Injuries, changes, perhaps a confirmation that this really was Tara.

Her heart accelerated with excitement and fear. For the first time since Tara’s death, Willow felt complete. The giant hole in her heart, through which every attempt of happiness would fall through, was finally filled. But at the same time she could not stop the fear coursing through her body. What if Tara left, what if she lost her again? She knew she wouldn’t be able to go on, but she knew she would have to for Amber’s sake. Living would be hell.

Tara didn’t want to push Willow. She knew it was painful for her lover, so she waited for Willow to initiate contact and set the pace. But when Willow’s knees began to buckle, Tara acted on reflex and captured the redhead in her arms before she could hit the floor.

Huddled in her lover’s arms, Willow began to weep. She wept for her loss, she wept for Amber’s loss, she wept for the six years that Tara missed out on actively raising Amber and she wept for the six years that their family was incomplete.

Willow wanted to stop crying. She wanted to revel in Tara’s arms, explore her body, remember what it felt like to be simply loved by the blonde, but her emotions were beyond her control.

Tara held on to the redhead. She had missed her so much. Watching her everyday, seeing her pain and heartbreak as her face would crumple and her shoulder shake while strangled sobs escaped from her deep inside her heart, and not being able to do anything tore Tara up inside. But tonight wasn’t about her. It was about making Willow feel loved.

Tara began to shift, repositioning the redhead even closer to her body. Willow’s heart almost stopped. She was afraid that any change might make Tara disappear.

“Please, don’t go,” Willow’s voice was tiny and hoarse and it broke Tara’s heart.

In all the years they had been together, with all apocalypses they had faced, she hadn’t once seen Willow as vulnerable and afraid as she was now.

She tightened her hold on the trembling redhead and whispered into her ear. “Never.”

Tara knew Willow wouldn’t be able to stand soon. Without letting go of her lover, she led them both to the double bed. She settled back against the headboard, bringing Willow to lie on top of her. The physical sensation of the solid wood board supporting her back felt good, but the sensation of holding her beloved Willow against her body felt amazing.

It was minutes or perhaps hours later, and the two lovers lay tangled in each other’s limbs.

Willow hadn’t been able to say much, but Tara knew she had many questions. She also knew she couldn’t answer all of them. She wished she could have come to the redhead earlier but she knew that if she were to visit Willow, it would only be in spirit, and Willow would not be able to touch her, hold her… feel her. It would have broken her heart and she couldn’t bear to cause Willow more pain. She had caused her enough. So she had to wait until the day she could finally return to her beautiful wife and child.

Willow had much to ask, and Tara much to tell, but for tonight the reunited couple just wanted to take comfort in each other’s arms. They drifted off to a peaceful sleep. For the first time in years tomorrow held the promise of a future for the two lovers.

I didn't think I would like this fic, but after reading it a couple of times, I gotta say that its really good. No, I mean it. It's really, really good.

You manage to hit the right emotional buttons, dude. There was not a single time during my reading of this that I didn't feel like crying.

Good job, mate.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go :happycry for a while.

What a wonderful update. I have lost close family but not a partner so I can't even begin to imagine how Willow feels, and to have to bring up a child single - handedly must make it that much worse. I could have cried for Willow while reading this.

Amber has given her Mommy such an amazing gift. Poor Willow, not quite believing that she will see Tara again and then there she is.

Looking forward to your next update and hoping to find out what has happened to bring Tara back.

I was already close to tears before I read this line:
[blockquote]“Please, don’t go,” Willow’s voice was tiny and hoarse and it broke Tara’s heart.[/blockquote]
That gave me the rest. But all of the good! Shows what a great writer you are.

Hi there.

I had only enough time yesterday to print the update (something I've done twice in three years) I read it afterward, but things happened and I didn't have a chance to come back to tell you how much I am still liking this story.

I just wanted to let you know that I am planning on a proper feedback for this update and that I haven't forgotten about it.

take care,
