Title: Order

Disclaimer: All Characters, etc. belong to Joss, i don't own anything, the usual

Rating: PG for now, I think

Feedback: Yes please! I'd love to know what you think, if there's any point of me continuing, or if you don't like something. If you think "there is no way (insert a character's name, eg. Willow) would do this", then please tell me, otherwise I will probably make that mistake often.

Spoilers: Up to and including Season Six

Summary: Willow's struggle after Tara leaves

Notes: Originally this fic was going to be not much longer than drabble, as you can tell the first paragraph is set to resemble pretty much that, just a take on Willow's thoughts with a bunch of similies thrown in. However it grew in my mind, and it's still growing, developing. If anyone knows how I can get a betta or someone to help me with that, i would very much appriciate it.

Order. Like glass it’s beautiful, clear and collected, but as stable as it appears, it can’t take strain. It’s fragile. In the end, it shatters, destructs and finally descends into chaos, shards flying everywhere cutting and breaking everything in it’s path. At the moment that consisted of Willow’s mind and heart. At least that’s how she felt the night Tara picked up the stacked boxes of clothing and walked out of the Summers household. Her brain would usually work overtime organizing every situation…no, every aspect of every situation into little categories. For example, the fight they had about magic at the Bronze. Tara was yelling. Bad. Tara still loved her. Good. Tara walking off. Bad. Tara had returned home. Good. That was simple. That was steady because Tara was still there. Tara made her steady. And now Tara was gone and all the control, all the order, all the categorization, all organization has fled Willow’s life.
Chaos descended, and at first Willow would…could do nothing more than stare into the vast emptiness before her. The mess in her mind was so big, so dirty that she could not see past it, nor could she make out the details. There was just too much and it was all too dark. The mess was too hard to organize and there was no incentive to organize it either. So Willow, unable to use her primary source of function, her mind, had to use the secondary source: her magics.

Yet magics proved to create even more chaos, and with every spell Willow got just a little more lost, her mind becoming just a little more messy and her hold on boundaries…quiet a lot more loose. It was that final fateful night that the loss of mental control lapsed into that of the physical in a form of a car crash, which not only endangered her, but the young girl she had come to almost call her little sister; Dawn.
She had begged and pleaded for the Dawn’s forgiveness but no avail, she knew then she had pulled the last straw. It was as if her ignorance of boundaries had finally crashed down upon her and trapped her outside that line beyond which boundaries applied. It was that line that literally caused her fall, however being in the physical world it was shaped in a more realistic form of a curb. And when she stumbled over the curb, crying out to Buffy, she realized how crossing the line did not fix things but rather caused them to fall.

For days she sat in her room, ashen, lost, broken. Unable to even use her stored magics to create the artificial comfort of Tara’s magically conjured arms around her. She walked over to the box, which still sat forlornly in the corner of their room, or rather just her room now, and pulled out one of Tara’s worn sweaters. It was a faded blue with thinned edged at which Tara would tug when she was nervous, causing the cotton fibers to stretch and thin. She lifted the soft fabric to her face and rubbed it along her cheek, trying to draw in what was left of Tara’s essence. She curled herself around the item of clothing before drifting into a restless sleep, where she would revisit the happier memories of their relationship, which would inevitably transform into something nightmarish.

She was sitting with Tara on the dewy grass, basking in the warmth of her girlfriend and the soft glow of the setting sun. Their classes were long over but instead of heading back to help the Scoobies the two decided to enjoy some quiet alone time together. With all the chaos back at the Magic Shop, weapons sharpened, research gathered, and general impending doom being pondered upon after another visit from Glory, Willow felt the need to take a break and step out of the morbid reality where yet another apocalypse was headed their way. So she suggested to Tara that instead of going to the Magic Box they should just take some time for themselves, to which Tara was more than happy to oblige.

She felt Tara leaning deeper into her embrace, as she settled back against the tree that was holding her upright. Looking down at the blonde sitting between her legs Willow smiled against Tara’s hair pressing a soft kiss to the back of her head. She sighed contently, enjoying the moment of peace.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” She heard Tara ask in reference to the sunset.
Looking down once again, Willow smirked “Never as beautiful as you”
That line has been used many a times by both, and while they knew how cheesy it has become by that point, neither were willing to let it go, because they felt that it captured their private philosophy: That to each, there was no one, no thing out there that was as beautiful as the other.

Tara twisted around in Willow’s arms, placing a chaste kiss on the smaller girl’s lips, and gazing deeply into her eyes. They stayed like that for seconds, minutes, maybe hours…Willow couldn’t tell, so lost she had become in the eyes of her love. Small drops of rain broke her out of their reverie. Only it wasn’t rain. It was crimson and thicker than water; it was blood. She looked up, hoping to see the source of the bleeding but there was nothing above her but a deep black abyss. She looked to Tara for help but the blonde was slumped in her arms. Her eyes however mirrored the abyss, deep pools of black, except on closer inspection they weren’t black but such a dark red that it appeared black. And the only way Willow had come to see that was through the seeping of the deep red liquid from Tara’s eyes, making it appear as if she were crying blood. Willow screamed but dared not drop her lover. She didn’t have to really, as a moment later Tara was standing upright over Willow, letting her crimson tears fall from her eyes and land on Willow’s cheeks.
“You should be crying Willow, after all, you caused this…WHERE’S YOUR REGRET, WHERE’S YOUR PENANCE…YOU DESERVE TO PAY”
Tara’s face was twisted in fury as she lunged at Willow.

And then Willow would wake up. She didn’t know if it was such a good thing though. Perhaps if Tara really had hurt Willow, even in her dreams, it would somehow compensate for at least a fraction of the damage she caused. Pain, it seemed, was the only retribution. Perhaps though, it was because of Dream Tara’s final words that she believed that. After all, throughout the duration of their relationship Tara seemed to be the wise one, her advice never failing to be anything but profound and virtuous. But then Willow would always wonder why she never did listen to Tara’s advice about going easy on the magic. Because she was addicted of course. Because her addiction became primal, like a need to feed or drink. It outweighed rationality. However Willow did not feel that it was a worthwhile justification, because she believed her need for Tara was more primal. She needed Tara more than food or water. More than magic. And that’s when the wave crashed. If she needed Tara more than magic, then why let her go. Why choose magic over the her...

Groaning Willow slowly crawled out of bed. Walking up to the dresser she stared at her reflection. Her complexion was pallid, her lips were chapped and her eyes bore dark circles around them. Her appearance left much to be desired, but since Tara’s departure Willow felt little need to pay it any attention. Little daily routines such as applying moisturizer or styling her hair had become unnecessary and proved to be too great of challenge for which she did not care.

She could smell pancakes and burnt toast for the scent was so strong that it wafted up the stairs. Buffy’s cooking, she absently thought.
She made her way downstairs, almost knocking the mighty slayer off her feet. Buffy was swamped with plates filled with pancakes, toast, cereals and a couple of glasses filled with various kinds of juice, causing her to be considerably off balance and ready to topple at the slightest change of wind.

“Whoa Buff, feeding an army?”
“No. Just a certain redhead.”
“Ah, well Nicole Kidman is in Australia I think, so those pancakes will be mighty stale before you can even book a flight”
“Oh no with this new phone…Uh, so not the point.” She shook her head before continuing, almost dropping a glass in the process.
“Willow, you have barely eaten since…” She paused unsure whether bringing up Tara would make Willow shatter. The girl looked more fragile than her mother’s good crystal.
However before she could decide how to finish her sentence, Willow interrupted. “ I appreciate all this, I really do Buffy but I’m not hungry”
She lowered her voice before continuing.” And I don’t deserve any of this.”

“Don’t deserve? Willow, you made a mistake, a mistake that you are working hard to fix. You are entitled to make wrong choices, go down the wrong path. Hell, how many times have I ventured off the rails? What makes those who are good different to those who aren’t is that those who are good try and repair the damage and you’re doing just that. You’re being human, and that’s the best anyone can do.”
Willow smiled at Buffy’s impromptu pep talk. “Thanks Buffy.”
“Anytime. Now Apple, Orange or Grape juice? You gotta pick one coz I’m about to drop it all.”
Willow grabbed the orange juice and a couple of plates, setting them down on the table.
After she helped Buffy set the rest of the food safely on the table, both women sat down.
“So what are you planning to do today?”
“I..I don’t know. I guess I could attempt to catch up on the mountain of assignments I hadn’t yet touched. Or there’s also the mad amount of groveling for forgiveness which I still have to do. And then there’s the daily struggle with urges to do magic which take up all of my energy to fight off.”
“It will get easier. You’ll be on top of that schoolwork in no time. Your urges will become more and more seldom and people will forgive in time. Dawn can’t keep a grudge for longer than two weeks.”
“And Tara?”
Buffy bit her lip. She wanted so badly to tell her friend that Tara will come back, that things would go back to the way they were between the two wiccans. But Buffy wasn’t sure.

“Tara loves you”
Willow turned around to face the source of the voice. It was Dawn. The young girl stood at the bottom of the stairs in her Groovy Girl pajamas with a small smile on her face.
“Dawn…I…” Willow began, but she wasn’t sure how to continue.
“No Willow, it’s ok. I’ve forgiven you. Tara has too. It’s just…it’s not just about forgiveness or love. It’s about trust. And right now you need to make her see that she can trust you again. And it might take some time, it’s not something you can force, but it will happen. I know it. You two are just meant to be.”
Willow smiled, for what may have been the first time in a month. Tara still loved her. Tara loved her.
“When did you become so smart?” She playfully asked the teen.
“Oh you know, just when you and Tara were busy doing all those “spells”.” She smirked emphasizing the last word by making quote marks in the air with her fingers.
Willow eyes bulged, and she blushed ten various shades of red, before soundlessly opening and closing her mouth like a fish. Finally realizing that there was no way to retaliate that comment, she settled for throwing Dawn a smirk.

Cool start!
It's really nice to see Buffy trying to be there for Willow, same goes for Dawn. Season Six just portrayed Buffy being too busy with herself and being more oblivious than usual. Thanks for 'fixing' this :-D

Hey guys,

Happy Valentines Day to all!

caz -Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. It means a lot to me. I'm glad you like the story, hopefully the rest won't dissapoint.

WillowRulez- Yea, I agree, Buffy was really in her own world in season 6, where she didn't pay much attention Willow's struggle with magic. Thank you very much for reding and feedbacking (lol, i hope that's a real word)!

AlysonGoddess and The person she loves -I really hope you guys will like where the story is headed, and I'll try and update on a regular basis. Thanks you guys for reading and leaving feedback, it's pretty much what keeps me writting.

Spoilers: Up to and including Season Six

Tara slowly opened her eyes, allowing them to adjust to the brightness of the room. The sun’s rays were streaming through the window, filling the room with warmth and light, but Tara felt none of it. She’d felt little since the night she walked out of the Summers house. In fact she felt oddly detached, often sitting dazed through large periods of time, sometimes as long as 10 hours, without noticing until something broke her out of the reverie.

Tara had often sat by the window when she was younger, looking up at the stars and reflecting on various aspects of her life, but those times would always bring her some sort of closure or conclusion to her queries. Recently though Tara found that not only had she never reached a conclusion, but she couldn’t even remember what her thoughts had been about, or even if there were any. It was as if she’d sat in hypnosis.

She blinked a couple of times, feeling something wet on her cheeks. Tears, she thought. She didn’t bother to wipe them off though. This too had recently become a regular occurrence.

Getting out of bed she made her way to the closet to pick out an outfit for the day. Her eyes skimmed over various peasant blouses and long printed skirts that inhabited her closet, but nothing really suited her mood.

After a few minutes of pondering over her choices she finally settled on a dark pair of pants and a yellow shirt with leaf prints on it. The last time she wore the top it ended up spending a good two days soaking in the sink. Tara had liked the top and tried to vigorously save it from the nasty sauce stain the top had acquired after a messy pizza night with Dawn.

Once she was fully dressed she observed herself in the mirror, thinking how pointless that was. It didn’t matter how she looked anymore since the only person worth impressing was no longer there to impress. Not that she needed any clothes to impress Willow. But routine was routine, and by now it was so deeply imprinted in Tara’s brain that she acted as if on autopilot.

Quickly doing a once over Tara moved to pick up her bag so she could head off to the cafeteria for breakfast before class, but something red caught her eye. She frowned, thinking of the infamous stain that had taken her days to remove. She moved closer to the mirror, so as to observe the mark more closely, but getting a good look at it she realized it couldn’t have been the same stain. It was in a different place and this one seemed fresh. She quickly took off her top and brought it close to her face.

She didn’t have vampire senses but she could definitely smell the distinct scent of blood. Why was her top covered in fresh blood and why didn’t she see it as soon as she pulled it out of the closet?

Tara glanced around the room, as if searching for a hidden answer. Her eyes widened when her eyes fell upon the clock. She was going to be late for class. This struck her as terribly strange considering that moments before she had at least an hour to spare before her first lecture.

Chucking the mysteriously soiled shirt into the laundry basket, she picked out another top from the closet before rushing off to her first lecture.

Willow sat in her Classical Lit. lecture, but rather than efficiently taking notes, she was doodling little shapes and letters in the margin of her notebook. Funnily enough the letters were restricted to T’s, R’s and A’s, forming a particular pattern.

She sighed, wishing for the lecture to be over with. Due to the lack of vengeance demons devoted to the field of saving bored students from insanely long lectures her wish had remained unfulfilled and the lecture continued to drag on forever, or for another thirty-five minutes to be more specific.

Willow slowly dozed off, lulled to sleep by the droning tone of her professor’s voice.

“Willow?”

Willow shifted, turning her head in the direction of the familiar voice but keeping her eyes closed.

“Hmm?”

“Sweetie, you have to wake up, you have class in twenty minutes.”

Warm hands began to caress her bare flesh. If this was Tara’s way of convincing Willow to hurry up and get to class, it certainly wasn’t working.

“Don’t wanna,” Willow murmured, leaning into the touch. “…like it right here.”

Soft lips connected with her own, initiating a passionate kiss. Willow raised her hands to cup Tara’s cheeks. Something wasn’t right though. The face that Willow’s hands touched was not Tara’s. She knew every contour; every curve of her lovers face and this was not it. She opened her eyes to see what was wrong, and instantly began to scream. The face that stared down at her certainly wasn’t Tara’s. It wasn’t even human.

Red gashes marked brown flesh, forming distorted features twisted in an expression of fury.

“Willow?”

“WILLOW”

Willow turned around to see Stacey Ellis, a girl from her tutorial, gripping her arm in an effort to wake her.

She was suddenly back in the lecture theatre, and currently the focus of fifty odd pairs of eyes.

“I didn’t think the ramifications of the film were that scary” She heard someone mutter from the front of the lecture theatre.

“I uh…I…have to go.”

Grabbing her bag, Willow bolted out of the class, not focusing on where she was going. She just needed to get away. The nightmare was fresh in her mind, mingled with the embarrassment of falling asleep only to wake up screaming in her lecture, causing her to feel shaky and disorientated.

She blindly ran down the almost deserted hallway, trying to find a place to sit or possibly hide. Her eyes remained glued to the floor until she collided with a firm body. Mumbling an apology she moved to continue down the hall, but the hands that caught her continued to hold her steady, forcing her to look up.

“Tara!” Willow squeaked.

“A-Are you ok?”

“I’m fine…I’m just…fine.”

“You look…I mean, are you sure? You seem to be upset”

Tara frowned. Willow’s skin was paler than usual, her clothes hung off her now, rather than sitting nicely on her petite frame, and her hands had acquired a distinct tremble. She looked anything but fine.

“I’m just having a bad day, that’s all.”

Tara glanced around the hall, before doing a double take on her actions. What was she looking for? Someone to take Willow home? She knew that was unlikely seeing as Buffy no longer went to college.

“Let me take you home. You’re shaken up and you shouldn’t just be wondering on your own in this state.”

Tara wasn’t ready to begin mending her relationship with Willow. She knew Willow needed more time, and it seemed the withdrawal symptoms were still a big part of Willow’s life. At least that’s what Tara chalked up the shaking and the paleness to. But even though Tara wasn’t ready to be with Willow again, there was no way she would risk the love of her life getting hurt walking home on her own in such a state.

Willow didn’t bother telling Tara that this didn’t differ too much from her everyday state anymore.

The walk back to the Summers house was awkward to say the least. Willow wanted to tell Tara how much she’d missed her, how much she’d changed, but she knew that Tara was not ready to hear that yet.

Tara didn’t know what to say to Willow. She wanted to make sure the redhead was alright, but there was only a certain amount of times that you can ask one question before it becomes aggravating. But what did Tara expect? Did she just expect Willow to break down in front of her disclosing every problem she’d encountered since quitting magic? Willow kept things bottled up when they were together, why did she expect her to bare her soul now that they were separated.

It seemed hours before they reached the Summers’ front door, but once they were both there the situation only grew more awkward.

“You, um, want to come in?” Willow offered.

“Dawn would love to see you,” she quickly added.

“N-No, I have to get to class. B-But tell her I said hi.”

Willow nodded, watching as Tara hurried away. She noticed that Tara’s stutter was back. It wasn’t as bad as before, but the idea still troubled Willow, knowing that Tara was feeling insecure and alone again. And it’s all my fault, she thought.

Things aren't gonna get better soon - are they?

The stain on Tara's shirt is a bit worrying. Is it tied to Willow's nightmare by any chance?

Willow definitely needs to talk to someone about her dreams - if not Tara then one of the Summers girls.

More soon please! :bounce

Hm... a mysterious stain! I have the same suspicion as caz.
It's nice to see that Tara and Willow can still talk to each other... without really talking, you know?
Hope you'll update soon!

Love this storyline so far! A real mystery! What is with the nightmares and the stain? That would really suck to have a nightmare in class and wake up screaming, especially for Willow! I'm super excited for you to continue! Please do

Hey guys, sorry if this update took a bit long but the original part that I wrote bored my sister to death, and after rereading it I realised that it was completely pointless, so I had rewrite the entire part.

Thank you all for reviewing. I really appreciate all the feedback, and feel free to tell me if there's something you want changed or if the story is moving to slowly, anything really.

caz- Things get a little better in this part...but it's the calm before the storm as they say ;-)
The stain on Tara's shirt is tied to Willow's nightmares in the grand scheme. I'm glad you're picking up clues, because I was worried that people would just think I'm being pointless and random.

WillowRulez - Yay, my stain clue is working, lol. Hopefully it will continue to make sense, because sometimes I feel like my writting is disjointed.
I'm trying to get more interaction happening between Willow and Tara, but at that point it didn't feel right to just throw them back to their normal banter.

Guppy
- I'm glad you like the story. Thank you for reading! This is actually my first go at writting anything mysterious.
Willow waking up screaming in class was just kind of something that would only happen in her nightmares because she's not usually one to fall asleep in class, so I thought it would be a good way to show that these nightmares are really starting to control her life.

AlysonGoddess- Hey, I'm happy you're still enjoying the story. Hopefully the Tara/Willow relationship is not developing too slowly, coz while writting I sometimes feel like I should define where they are, instead of just having them doing this awkward dance.

eirnlove. - Hi, thanks for reading. There's not so much angst in this chapter but stick around coz there's gonna be a whole bunch of it pretty soon.

Part 3

Willow dreamt of blood. It cascaded down the curves of Tara’s body as they made love. It soaked the sweaty sheets beneath them. It stained her skin and penetrated her soul, binding her to her sins.

The room was dark save for the specks of light emitted from the burning candles scattered across the room, and Willow could not pinpoint where she was. However she did not ponder on her location long, choosing to concentrate on the writhing body beneath her.

“Willow, please”

She looked down, gazing deeply into her lover’s eyes. The bright blue that usually warmed Willow’s heart was replaced by a deep crimson. It was then that she became aware of the chill on her back. She could feel the light breeze cool her sweating skin. Except it wasn’t sweat that bathed her skin.

“Tara, there’s blood all over…”

But Tara was no longer beneath her. She quickly scanned the room seeking out her lover in the dim light.

Her hand reached for Tara’s. She could almost feel the warmth of her fingertips connecting with her lover’s.

The earth gave a small tremble and in the second Willow looked away, the form of her lover was replaced by a bleeding deformed figure.

It lunged at her and the mere connection with it caused her to feel lightheaded. Suddenly the oxygen level dropped and Willow found herself struggling for breath.

Her lungs burned and the pressure in her chest increased as her airway became completely blocked. She thrashed in blind panic, trying to loosen the hold the demon had on her but it was as if she were tied down. She couldn’t see the creature but she could feel it binding every molecule of her body to itself.

Willow woke gasping for breath. She felt as if she were going to vomit, and ran to the bathroom only to violently dry heave over the toilet.

She washed her face with cold water, allowing the dream to fade from her mind. Only those kinds of dreams never did, not fully. They stored themselves, forming a cluster of memories that made the dreadful feeling in the back of her mind grow and grow. Willow was afraid that one day soon it would get so big that it would drive her insane and she wouldn’t be able to separate her dreams from reality. She feared that one day she wouldn’t be able to wake up and the demon from her nightmares might finish her off. He was getting closer and closer to in her dreams.

She looked at the clock and decided there was no point in going back to bed. She instead distracted herself by thinking about the events of the previous day: seeing Tara.

She realized she never did thank the blonde for walking her home yesterday, and resolved to do just when she went in for her classes today.

[hr]

Tara used to have vivid dreams. Not all were good, but since the night Willow and the Scoobies stood up to her family most have been of the pleasant nature. Lately though Tara had stopped dreaming.

She wondered whether it had anything to do with Willow. She read once that an exhausted person was less likely to dream. Physically Tara wasn’t very active. Her mind however raced with Willow related thoughts just about every minute of the day. She’d find herself thinking about her without even realizing it. It seemed that everything she did could in some way be connected to Willow. It made sense in way. When they were together they were almost inseparable, sharing as many aspects of their life as they could from time on campus to subconscious habits.

She knew it was her decision to leave Willow, but it didn’t ease the pain. Each day she missed her more than words could express, more than her heart could take.
Spending even the brief half an hour with her ex lover tugged at her heart more than she wanted to admit, making her yearn for contact with the girl; to hold her, run her fingers along her skin, through her hair. She wanted to press her lips against Willow’s, to taste the sweetness cascading off her tongue; to feel the intimacy they shared not so long ago.

I’m not ready, Tara reminded herself. She’s not ready. She sighed, feeling another argument about to erupt between her head and her heart.

Keeping her distance away from Willow proved to be as difficult as she had imagined, if not more so, especially when her heart was still so close to the redhead.

Tara went through her morning routine, before quickly grabbing her bag and leaving the dorms.

She wondered whether she should stop off at one of Willow’s classes to make sure she was feeling better, or if not to berate the girl for showing up to class while feeling ill. As soon as she thought passed through her head, she mentally kicked herself. She had no right to do that.

Finally deciding to settle in the middle of the two options, Tara walked towards Willow’s first class. She’d just casually walk past and if the she happened to bump into her she would just see how she was doing.

Willow had the same idea in mind. She stood by the entrance of Tara’s first class, waiting for the blonde to make an appearance. Students from the previous class filtered out of the lecture theatre, as students from the next class poured in.

Willow fidgeted on the spot. Why wasn’t Tara in class? What if something happened to the blonde?

Tara had walked past Willow’s class at least eight times, and she was sure the group of girls sitting in the study lounge were beginning to give her weird looks.

Tara began to panic. Willow never missed class. She remembered a couple months ago, Willow was sick with glandular fever. She would have bouts of extreme fatigue and high fevers, and still insisted on coming to class. For the most part the redhead was watched so she wouldn’t sneak off to class while no one was home, but one day each Scooby had a hectic schedule and was not available to Willow-sit. Willow took that opportunity to sneak into her lectures only to be caught by Tara, on the way to her art class, who dragged the sick girl home and refused to leave her until Dawn could come home and take over Willow-watch.

The students had all settled in their chairs and the lecture was in full swing; yet Willow was nowhere to be seen.

Tara bit her lip and slowly made her way back to her dorm. There was no point going to her lecture. By the time she’d get there it would be half over and she doubted she could concentrate anyway while she worried over Willow.

[hr]

Willow headed for Tara’s dorm room. She knew technically they were broken up and she shouldn’t really be running to her ex’s dorm room, every time she thought something was wrong, but Willow could not help but worry. It was in her nature.

She knocked on the door.

“Tara?” She called out when no one answered.

“I heard the girl who lives here has class right now.”

Willow spun around to see her ex lover standing less than two feet away with her famous half smile on her face.

“Tara!”

Relief coursed through both girls.

“I uh, I went to your class. I wanted to say thank you, for walking me home yesterday. I never did thank you, and when I saw that you weren’t in class I thought you might be sick and I was worried and I know I really have no right to worry coz, you know, breaking up and all…”

“Willow, it’s ok. I-I went to your class too to be honest, that’s why I wasn’t in mine. I wanted to see if you felt better.”

“Well aren’t we just the pair.”

Tara laughed for what felt like the first time in weeks. Then she realized it was.

“So, um, since we both missed class, do you want to maybe get something to eat?”

Willow held her breath. She had just asked Tara out. Oh goddess, she was sure Tara would run now, or tell her to stay away from her.

“I…” Tara hesitated.

Since yesterday she had been thinking of seeing Willow again, yet she kept telling herself that she wasn’t ready, that now wasn’t the time. But it felt so good to just ease into their normal conversation, to hear Willow babble, to watch her eyes sparkle, to smell her perfume.

“I’d like that.” She decided she’d just knock herself over the head the next time it tried to deny her Willow time.

Willow almost jumped on the spot, half from excitement, half from surprise.

[hr]

They walked across the courtyard and chose to settle under the large oak tree. Neither was hungry so they compromised for just sitting and talking.

There were other couples occupying various parts of the lawn and a group of students playing a game of football.

They talked about their classes, slaying, monsters, teachers, Dawn.

“She misses you. It’s the daily stuff, like funny shaped pancakes. Buffy tried cooking the other day, which impressed Dawn but she told me in secret nothing beats your pancakes. I have to say I agree.”

“I miss her too. I guess spending a few hours with her on weekends is really not enough compared to the amount of time I spent with her when I…when we lived in the same house.” Tara finished off hesitantly.

“It’s not just her. “

Tara laughed. “ I didn’t forget that we lived in the same house too.”

Willow smiled in response. “I meant the missing you part.”

A sudden warning to watch out from one of the footballer’s interrupted their conversation and Willow turned her head to the game to make sure they didn’t have to duck from the incoming ball.

She did not see Tara’s body slightly slump and nor the change in her eyes.

?? "She did not see Tara’s body slightly slump nor the change in her eyes." ?? You end it there? That's cruel! I can't tell this is your first mystery, you already have torture down!

But very good update. Love the mutual skipping of lectures to check up on the other. So cute. Willow's dreams are escalating. Are they going to start coming true or just haunt her and stain shirts? What's causing them and what is their purpose?

Can't wait for the next update. I need to know what's happening next!

Hey, this update took a little longer than I planned, but here it is. Hope you guys like it.

Guppy- Sorry bout the cliffhanger. hehe.
I can't reveal too much about Willow's dream, coz I don't want to give away the plot, but they do have a lot to do with the 'Big Bad' of this story, who is the cause of the nightmares.

caz- Hopefully you did get some sleep, but I'm glad that the cliffhanger has got you curious. They're kinda fun, the cliffhangers that is.

WillowRulez- Hehe, I didn't mean to be evil...well maybe just a little.
Time just flew this week so this update wasn't as fast I thought it'd be. Hopefully the next one will be faster.

Part 4

[hr]

Willow was squinting at the football player as he tried to unsuccessfully communicate with her in signals. He was pointing his fingers in random directions; above, below, forwards and backwards.

She shook her head to tell him she didn’t understand. The guy threw his hands up in frustration and began jogging towards her.

Willow suddenly felt a painful pressure on her back. She tried to turn towards Tara to tell her something was wrong, but before she had the chance her vision blurred and her head began to spin.

“Ugh …Tara,” she called out weakly.

She turned to where Tara sat, and for a moment she was sure that she saw Tara’s eyes bleeding, crimson tears staining her face.

Images from her nightmares flashed before her eyes, as they swirled and fused with her currently blurred view of reality.

As Willow’s mind allegedly melded illusion and reality, the rest of the students went about their business. In true Sunnydale fashion all any casual observer would see was a young blonde rubbing the redhead’s back. They were all too far away or perhaps too oblivious to see the blood on Tara’s face or the anguish on Willow’s

She gasped in pain, too weak to scream, briefly wondering why Tara wasn’t doing anything. She wasn’t even sure Tara was still there. Perhaps the blonde ran for help when she saw Willow writhing in pain. But if Tara was gone, why could she feel the blonde next to her. Was it another trick of her mind?

The pain was intense. It ran through her whole body, making Willow feel as if all her insides were being sucked out. Black dots danced in front of her eyes, and the blur in front of Willow’s eyes began to dissipate. The next minute Willow felt something drop on her head and the last thing that ran through her mind was that the painful pressure on her back was gone. Then everything went black.

Tara’s hand limply fell from Willow’s back. She didn’t even realize she had touched Willow. It took her a moment to realize that Willow was no longer speaking; that in fact she was no longer conscious.

“WILLOW” She screamed, lifting the girl into her lap and shaking her still form. She ran her hands over the girl searching for any injuries, any sign as to what could have made her lose consciousness.

“Willow, wake up, please wake up.”

Her heart raced and her hands shook as she reached for the redhead’s pulse. The brushed her finger’s along Willow’s neck until she reached her pulse point, holding her breath until she felt it’s steady but weak beat.

Caressing her cheek she tried to rouse the reformed witch.

Tears fell freely down her face but she paid them little attention, roughly wiping her face with her sleeve. Please, please Willow, she begged with her heart and soul.

How did this happen? When did this happen? And why didn’t Tara see this?

Unfortunately the blonde knew the answer to the last question. She must have had another missing-time episode.

Great timing, she thought bitterly. The blonde was unaware of how connected the two events were.

The footballer finally made it to the pair, startling Tara and causing her to protectively clutch the redhead closer to her chest.

Even as the footballer began to profusely apologise and Tara saw that he posed no threat, she refused to losen her grip on Willow, curling her body around the pale girl to shield her from the world, completely unaware that it was her Willow needed shielding from.

The footballer finally finished apologizing and began asking if there’s anything he could do.

Tara stared at him in confusion. She didn’t understand how he could be responsible for Willow’s blackout.

“I tried to warn her, “ he added, referring to his mad hand gestures. “I kicked the ball too high and it ventured over here and got stuck in the tree.”

It was only then that Tara noticed the football lying next to where Willow fainted. She concluded that the football must have knocked the redhead out, only to wonder how such a light object could hit so hard as to make a person lose consciousness.

Tara shook her head. Turning back to the footballer she asked, “Could you please call an ambulance?”

The boy nodded and apologized again before running off to find a phone.

“Come on baby, you need to get up.” She begged, subconsciously using one of her favorite endearments for the redhead.

She began to stoke her hair. It was a great comfort remedy for her and Willow when either girl was hurt or upset, however it did nothing to coax the unconscious girl out of her slumber.

[hr]

The ambulance came quickly and before Tara could explain anything Willow was hooked up to all sorts of wires, surrounded by machines she was too familiar with, from all the Scooby hospital visits, not to mention from her mother’s stay in hospital.

“Are you coming with us Miss?” Asked one of the paramedics.

Tara nodded and climbed into the emergency vehicle, sitting down beside Willow.

She took one of Willow’s pale hands, but found it to be awkward due to all the wires sticking out of her. Running her thumb over the back of her hand, Tara focused on Willow’s eyes, trying to will the redhead into consciousness.

“Come on sweetie. Wake up for me,” she coaxed.

One of the paramedics looked at her with uncertainty and a touch of sympathy.

Tara, feeling the pair of eyes on her looked up at the young paramedic. He looked to be in his mid twenties, good physique, and a rather attractive face. He would have had beautiful eyes had they not reflected the pain he had to witness almost everyday watching people loose their loved ones in this very ambulance.

“Her body is exhausted. Whatever she’s experienced was intense. It took a lot out of her, and her body won’t have enough energy to physically respond yet.”

Tara looked at him. “She was knocked out by a football.”

“Whatever happened, the football would have caused the least damage. Are you sure you didn’t see anything before hand? Do you know if perhaps she’s been seriously ill recently?”

“She looked, I mean she was a bit sick yesterday but she said she felt fine today, nothing intense.” Tara pondered if perhaps the redhead lied to her about her condition.

“Well, her body is responding as that of a person who’s suffered a near death illness.”

Tara paled.

“S-she’s going to be alright….Isn’t she?”

“Her vitals are returning back to normal. That’s a good sign.”

Tara waited for him to say more but the paramedic turned around to adjust the setting on one of the machines, indicating that there was nothing more reassuring for him left to say.

[hr]

The hospital ride was fast. Given the size of Sunnydale and the speed of the vehicle, it wasn’t much of a surprise.

Tara watched helplessly as Willow was wheeled out on a gurney and rushed through a pair of double doors through which she was forbidden to follow.

“As soon as we make sure she really is ok, and run some tests you will be allowed to see her.” As soon as the doctor quickly informed Tara he too disappeared behind the doors.

Tara was not one to pace, so instead she sat on the hard plastic hospital chair and fiddled with the hem on her shirt.

She was so deep in thought, or rather in worry that she didn’t notice the rest of the Scoobies rush into the waiting room. She had called them earlier, telling them that Willow was in hospital. She thought she heard Buffy rushing out through the front door before she even hung up the phone.

“Where is she? Is she okay? Did they say what was wrong with her?”

Tara shook her head no to all of their questions.

“They said they don’t know exactly what’s wrong, but that her body is in a state of someone who has suffered a serious illness.”

“Magic?” Asked Buffy.

Tara shook her head. “ I-I don’t know. I t-thought she hadn’t done any magic in weeks.”

“She hasn’t. She’s been trying so hard. Maybe the magic now stored in her body…I don’t know…I just hope she’s okay” Buffy ran her hands through her hair.

“She will be,” Dawn walked up to her sister. “She just has to be.”

Xander stood behind the girls, his hands on Dawn’s shoulder
“Once again, we’re at our most common hang out spot. Who wants something from the drinks machine?”

Everyone shook their heads, and Xander collapsed into a plastic chair next to Tara’s.

Together the Scoobies occupied half the waiting room, periodically getting up to pace the small space.

After what seemed like hours of waiting, a doctor came to inform them about Willow’s condition.

“Miss Maclay?”

Tara instantly stood up. The rest of the Scoobies followed, gathering into a small group around the doctor.

He looked around, before continuing.

“I have Willow’s test results.”

[hr]

Another cliffhanger. Sorry, I couldn't help it, but it seemed like a good place to stop.

Excellent update so I'll forgive you for the cliffhanger!

All I can think is that someone is messing with both Willow and Tara. It's a little too convenient that Tara had a 'missing time' episode as Willow was suffering.

Whatever Willow has got seems to be pretty serious. The Scoobies need to get to the bottom of this soon.

Update soon please!

Hey guys,

First of all, i'm really sorry about the lack of updates for this fic, but i'm just having a bit of a writer's block with it. There will be an update soon hopefully.

With that said, I may not have an update for this fic, but I have written another fic, "She was never gone, she was with me" which you can find hopefully somewhere at the top of the Pens thread. A warning though, it is very angsty, but i hope you guys will like it nevertheless.

caz- I'm glad you liked the update. You're right there is someone messing with both of them, and even using one of them to get what he wants.

Irishlassie101- heya, thanks heaps for reading and reviewing. I'm sorry that the update is taking so long, but I will try to have it up in the next few days.
