Pains of the Past

by Hawk

Don't own them so... well you know the rest.

This isn't as angsty as I was planning but we'll as we go. Rating wise nothing higher then PG-13ish. But if there is begging the rating could increase.

Final Note: I must praise Garner for going through my stuff and giving me some great feedback. You're the best.

Part One

Willow and Buffy were walking back to their dorm room after another pointless Scooby meeting. Activity had been on the low end lately, which meant that Buffy’s nerves were running on a very short leash and Willow was on best friend calming detail. The rest of the day would consist of getting mochas, spending a couple hours enjoying the sun and fresh air at the part and finally dance the night away at the Bronze. For the most part Willow enjoyed this part of the job since Buffy and been so busy with Riley lately so they were finally able to spend some time with each other. The only problem was she wouldn’t get to see Tara for the rest of the day.

Tara. Those four little letters held something that was too big for even her amazing intellect to master. Her name seemed too small to describe the wonderness of the blond witch. Over the last three months she had been a shinning light in one of Willow’s darkest times. Willow loved spending time with her and lately she never wanted the night to end because she didn’t want to have to say goodbye and leave. It was almost the way she felt with Oz but on a different level. She couldn’t deny that the blonde was beautiful no matter what her friend said about herself, but there was so much more within her eyes that captivated her. Part of her wanted Tara to meet her friends but another side of her didn’t want to share the girl with anyone else. She was hers and something about that amazed and scared her at the same time, not to mention the fact that this was the first girl she had ever liked in a more than friends type of way. All she truly understood was when she kissed Tara she felt like nothing else in the world existed besides

the two of them, and she wanted that feeling to last forever.

“I can’t believe that Anya broke up with Xander,” Buffy said bringing Willow back to the land of the living.

Looking up she gave a sad smile. “I know, but at least he is starting to look a little better.

Yesterday he even tried to make a joke,” she said omitting the part where the joke wasn’t funny even for Xander humor. It had been a week now since Anya dumped him saying she needed a man with more money and less involvement with the hellmouth.

Buffy nodded. “Well why don’t we go to the Bronze tonight? That might cheer Xander up and also give us lowly Scoobies a chance to meet you witchcraft buddy, Tara. If you invite her along then we might be able to get Xander out of his parent’s basement and show him that there really is a thing called sunlight. It’s just… for the past few weeks you’ve been spending all you time with her, not that I have any right to judge, but I would like to meet her.”

“Really, that’s great. I’ll call her and see of she can come tonight.” Willow said unable to keep the excitement out of her voice, luckily the excitement was stronger than the fear she felt. What if the Scoobies didn’t like Tara, or worse what if Tara didn’t like them?

When they reached the dorm room they heard the phone ringing on the other side. Buffy quickly opened the door getting the phone just in time. “Hello,” Buffy said but soon her face fell becoming serious. Willow closed the door and moved closer to her best friend. “Yes, thank you. I will be right there.” She hung up the phone, but before Willow could ask what was wrong Buffy was dialing a new number. “Giles, its Faith.” Willow froze as those words hit her. “No, no. The doctor just called me and said that her brain activity had increased over the last month. He thinks she will wake up some time this week. Willow and I will go check things out right now if you could call Xander so we can have a Scooby meeting in, say an hour. Thanks.” Buffy turned to Willow and they headed out towards the hospital.

Neither spoke during the fifteen-minute walk. Willow didn’t know what to think as images attacked her of a very sharp knife pressed against her throat by the rogue slayer. On the level of tormentors in Willow’s life, Faith came in a close second only to Cordelia. The Queen of Sunnydale High only exceeded because she had years of ridicule on her side.

When it came to places needing avoidance the hospital was number one on the list for Scoobies, but they had been there so many times that they knew every wing by heart. It had been five months since they had last visited Faith, but the two girls silently walked towards their destination. Reaching the south wing Willow noticed something. Through the intercom they were playing classical music, Bach to be exact. She liked the composer but she was sure that it was against code to play it like this.

Buffy not even thinking about it walked up to the front desk. “May I speak with Dr. Horner please?”

“Miss Summers, I informed you over the phone that you didn’t need to come down here. I was just giving you an update since you are the second person on the list to contact in such matters.” Dr. Horner said as he showed up at the front desk.

Buffy only nodded and then stopped. “I’m the second person to be notified? I thought that I was first.”

“You were until a couple months ago when Faith’s cousin arrived. Since she is a blood relative she is notified first you understand,” the doctor said.

Both Willow and Buffy looked at him like he had grown a second head. What did he mean cousin? Faith never talked about having any family. “Her cousin is here?” Willow asked after regaining her voice.

The doctor smiled, “Yes such a sweet girl. She brings a flower for each patient when she comes. Some of the people here don't have any family or if they do they never come, so it is wonderful of her to spend the time. She even convinced us to play a little Bach.

It’s Faith favorite composer so we indulge her a little. She is here actually if you would like to meet her. I’m sure that you know the way. I don’t mean to be rude but I have to go.” The doctor smiled one last time and left the two speechless girls. What was the world coming to? Faith had a relative that has been her for a while who seems to be the sweetest person the doctor has ever met and Faith liked Bach. No this had to be one of the alternate worlds created when someone made some of those stupid wishes to a vengeance demon.

The two girls walked towards the room that was Faith’s but heard someone chanting within. Willow took a step closer recognizing the voice, but not able to believe what it meant. Opening the door her fears were confirmed, as a familiar figure stood by Faith’s bed engrossed within the spell she was casting. Buffy looked over at Willow and noticed that her friend had turned pale. It became worse when she heard Willow whisper, “Tara?”

Part Two

The blond witch heard her name and quickly turned to look at the new comers at the door. She froze as her eyes feel upon Willow. “W-willow? W-what are you d-doing here?” Her stutter coming on full strength as she looked between the two girls in front of her.

Buffy and Willow moved into the room closing the door behind them, so no one could hear their conversation. Tara kept her place at Faith’s side grasping the unconscious girl’s hand. “I think you should be answering that question,” Buffy said not caring about the cold tone in her voice.

Willow flinched as she watched Tara also react to the hostile tone. After a second of insecurity she straightened her shoulders and replied, “I’m here to see my c-cousin. I didn’t think that w-was a crime.”

“Why didn’t you tell us that you were Faith’s cousin?” Buffy kept eye contact with the blonde not trusting her for a moment. Why was it every time one of them met someone new they ended up having some kind of hidden agenda?

Tara looked at her in confusion. She turned to Willow but was greeted by a perplexed and accusing look. “F-first, I have never met you before in my life, b-but I am guessing that you’re Buffy. S-secondly, why would I have to tell you that Faith is my cousin? I didn’t even know that you knew Faith.” Being attacked usually made Tara’s stutter increase, but she would not look weak when it came to Faith. She couldn’t let that ever happen, but something nagged at the back of her head. “B-but if you know Faith then you c-could tell me what h-happened to her?” Her eyes were pleading.

Buffy didn’t know what to say to this. She could tell that Tara cared for Faith, so it might not be such a good idea to inform her that she was responcible for her being in a coma for the past eight months. It was still an issue that she was dealing with. Shaking herself she remembered that this girl, no matter how nice she acted, had been deceiving Willow. “She decided to play with fire and ended up getting burned.”

Not liking the sound of that, Tara moved from Faith’s side to stand in-between them. Nothing else was going to happen to her cousin while she was here. “I don’t understand what is going on here, but you must have been her friend or why else would you be here right now. And as for fire, I know that she can act all tough but it is nothing compared to the kind of power you possess, she is only a seventeen year old girl.” She addressed the comment to Buffy but she still looked over at Willow. The redhead wouldn’t meet her eyes and that was something that concerned her.

“I think that a slayer no matter how young they are might be on even ground with Buffy and sure gives her an advantage over the rest of use,” Willow mumbled still not looking up.

“What are you talking about? Faith can’t be a slayer. Buffy is the slayer and there can be only one.” Tara said trying to make sense of what was going on.

Buffy rolled her eyes. She had to give the girl credit Tara was playing the role perfectly. “Fine, if you want to play dumb. I died when I was sixteen for like two minutes and so now there are two, Faith being the second one.”

“Then why are you acting so hostile? Shouldn’t you be friends since you’re both fighting against demons?” the blonde witch asked.

“She was at the beginning but when she turned rogue and starting killing people we had a little problem with that.” Buffy said not sugar coating it at all. The anger in her voice was partly for her self since she hadn’t been ablt to reach the younger slayer leaving only one option.

Willow could see that Buffy’s words were like a physical blow. Tara’s eyes radiated confusion and pain at the idea that Buffy was speaking the truth. “N-no. She wouldn’t do that. N-not unless she didn’t have a choice. I know that Faith has a lot of anger within her, but she would never.” Tara stopped. Taking a hard look at Buffy she completely changed what she was saying. Her stutter disappeared as she finished, “How did Faith end up here with a stab wound to the stomach?”

Buffy took her change in voice as a challenge, but Willow knew that something else was going on. However, Buffy not knowing Tara as well continued seeing the changed tome as a spitting contest. “Well do you want me to tell you the part where she joined forces with an insane one hundred year old mayor who wanted to become a full blooded demon, or should we talk about the time Faith had a knife against Willow’s throat? I’m sorry but when push comes to shove I couldn’t let her distroy the world or kill the ones that I love.”

Tara looked at Willow for a moment when Buffy mentioned the knife incident, pained to even think of the redhead in danger. However she was brought back to the situation when Buffy revealed that she was the one that had put Faith here. Taking a deep breath Tara continued in the same tone she had just used. “So you were the one that stabbed Faith?”

Not liking the way Tara sounded but Buffy was in a situation that she couldn’t back down from. “Yes…” Buffy didn’t have a chance to say anything else as a force picked her up and tossed her across the room. Willow watched her friend hit the wall and fall to the floor, then turned back to look at Tara. Tara was too busy looking down at Buffy getting ready for the next round. Buffy stood up and was about to attack Tara when another force smacked her across the face harder then anyone else ever had.

No matter what her feelings were for the blonde witch, Willow had no choice as she started to cast a minor spell. Tara could sense the power coming form her and turned. With a gentle motion, Tara moved Willow over towards the door and placed a shield around her so that she couldn’t move or perform any type of magic against her. Focusing her attention back on the slayer, Tara hit her again with her magic. She had no intention to attack the slayer, but the anger deep down within her took over at the knowledge that she had almost killed Faith. “I will never let you hurt her again!” Tara almost screamed as she started hitting Buffy with magical punches over and over again.

With all the commotion going on around her, Faith’s eyes slowly started to open. She didn’t know where she was or what was going on except that there was a fight. Using all the will power that she had she tried to focus on what was happening around her. When her mind finally started to work she saw something that made her blood run cold. Tara and Buffy fighting and not in the vocal sense, and by the looks of it Tara was winning. When she heard Tara’s last words she almost screamed herself. She wasn’t going to let this happen because of her. All of the darkness she had already done would be nothing if either of them were severely hurt. “Tara...” Faith’s voice was almost non-existent after eight months of not using it. With a deep breath she gathered up all the strength that she had. “TARA STOP!”

All the spells that Tara controlled dissipated as she heard Faith’s voice. She turned to look at her cousin and tears flowed from her eyes. Faith was pale and looked like shit but she was awake. Forgetting everything that had just happened she rushed over to the dark haired girl pulling her into a desperate hug. She had been here for months hoping for this very moment and now it was happening. Faith molded into the hug and absorbed all the love and caring Tara had to give her. It had been so long since they had seen each other. Willow and Buffy now free from Tara’s spells watched in silence the scene before them. Neither had ever seen Faith cry for sadness or joy, so to see the tears falling from her eyes was a shocking experience.

After a moment of hysterics, Faith remembered others were in the room and tried to regain a little of her composure. Looking over at Buffy she noticed that the blonde was in slayer mode and she was giving off this vibe not only at Faith but Tara as well. Sitting a little taller so her vocal threat was less of a joke. “B, your fight is with me, so leave Tara alone. She doesn’t have anything to do with this.”

“Actually you’re only half right. I do have some issues with you which will be dealt with quite soon, but I also have a couple of issues with Tara,” Buffy said looking straight at Tara with a cold look.

Faith looked between the two but noticed that Tara kept trying to make eye contact with Willow. “What could she possibly do, stutter when she said your name or something? Ok, time out. I need a little catch up here since I have been in a coma for…”

“Eight months.” Tara whispered.

Faith placed that in the freak later file. She was about to continue when Dr. Horner walked into the room. “Well, well Miss Maclay’s visits three times a week ended up doing some good after all. How does it feel to be back in the world of the living?” As the doctor talked he moved around the bed checking Faith’s stats completely oblivious to the tension in the room. “I guess we should play Bach more often. Do you feel any pain or discomfort?”

“Everything’s good as new doc. So when can I get outta here?” Faith asked a little quickly.

“Well I think there are a few more tests to perform before I can let you out of here,” the doctor said with a smile.

Tara watched Faith’s face darken at his answer. “Faith he isn’t here you’re going to be safe at the hospital.” Faith just looked at her cousin with pleading eyes and Tara could see the fear hidden underneath. “Fine, doctor could I speak with you in private for a moment?”

The doctor nodded and they stepped outside, but Willow watched them through the window on the door. Buffy just glared Faith as the dark haired slayer desperately watched Tara as well. Outside the doctor started to pale as Tara informed him of the reasons Faith didn’t want to stay in the hospital and was soon nodding to everything that Tara was saying. What was concerned Willow was that Tara was paling as she spoke and every time her eyes momentarily moved back into the room she could see the pain radiating from them.

They walked back into the room, Tara going straight over to the bed to hold Faith’s hand as the doctor looked at Faith with sad eyes. “Tara has agreed to take responsibility for your well being. She has promised to take you to her dorm room so that you can have at least a week worth of bed rest. I will be calling to set up some appointments for the tests that need to be done. It will be just a few minutes to get your papers in order.” With that said the doctor walked out of the room.

Buffy sighed as she realized that Faith was going to be released in an hour or two. She had to tell Giles so that he would be ready when they showed up. Plus she needed to call Riley so that he would be here for this. Faith was a weak point for her, so having Riley there would make things a little better. “I’m going to call Giles to let him know what’s going on. After your release we will head over there so that we can figure out what we are going to do next.” She didn’t give anyone a chance to say anything else as she walked out of the room.

Willow looked at Tara for a moment trying to see if there were any changes to the girl that she thought she knew so well. The blonde still had the pleading look in her eyes when ever she looked at Willow. “I just need to know one thing,” she started. Tara turned to face her ready to answer any question hoping that at least their friendship could be saved. “When we first met did you know about our issues with Faith? Was that the reason that you wanted to be around me, so that it could be used against us right now?”

“No. I would never do something like that to you. Please believe me?” Tara pleaded with everything that she had in her. She let all the love she felt for the redhead shine in her eyes. She would have taken a step towards her but the bed was blocking her path. Willow nodded. She believed the blonde witch was telling the truth but the idea that she was a cousin of Faith was going to be a hard thing to get over.

Faith knew the voice Tara was using, it was her I’m in love with you so I would rather kill myself then see you in any pain voice. The last time this had happened the dark haired slayer had to watch her cousin trying to hide her tears for weeks. The only reason that stupid blonde headed bitch hadn’t gotten the crap beaten out of her was because Tara had told her to back off. She pulled on Tara’s hand so that the blonde was now facing her. “I know that voice you are using missy.” It was confirmed when Tara blushed and tried to turn away. Faith looked between the two girls in the room and wanted to scream at the fates for making her life one continuous joke. “Why would this happen to me? Tara haven’t I always been there for you in situations like this? God we both know that I hated the X-files, but I watched it with you for five years with out complaint and now this. Red please just tell me that you will never join the FBI, because that would fulfill way too many of Tara’s fantas…” She would have finished the next word but was silenced as a gentle but firm hand was placed over her mouth.

“Faith I don’t think that we should be discussing this right now, unless you want to discuss a certain eighth birthday party,” Tara said in a forced voice. Faith stopped smiling and the mischievous spark in her eyes faded at the offensive topic, that was a low blow. The blonde finally salvaged enough courage to look over at Willow and noticed that there was a slight blush to her cheeks.

Tara was saved any further embarrassment when Buffy and Dr. Horner walked into the room. Tara signed the papers that they had and then helped Faith change into her clothes since her muscles weren’t used to moving at the moment. The younger slayer did have a problem with being pushed in a wheelchair for the next week but it was the only way that the doctor would let them leave and Tara had the look in her eye that meant she planned on keeping it. Finally they had everything in order and Faith was released.

Part Three

Willow and Buffy walked a few feet ahead as Tara wheeled Faith towards Giles’ house. The Maclay cousins were a little uneasy about what was coming. Tara had wanted to meet the rest of the Scoobies for a while but this wasn’t the way she had pictured it and Faith wasn’t on good terms with any of them so she knew what was coming her way. The only comfort that they had was the fact that they were together. In the past that was all they had needed so maybe it would be the same this time.

“Well, well look girls its s-s-stuttering T-t-tara. And it finally looks like she was able to get the girlfriend that she was looking for. Well when you’re fat and ugly I guess a cripple is the best that you can do,” said Angela Allen from across the street. Tara had a class with her last semester and the evil blonde had picked her for ridicule. She didn’t know why she was chosen but just ignored it as best as she could.

Willow and Buffy turned around as they heard the girl’s words. Willow was about to say something when she made eye contact with Tara. The shy girl just shook her head no allowing her golden locks to fall covering her face once again. Then both girls noticed the vice grip she had on Faith’s shoulder as the slayer shot daggers at the girls who were walking off. Tara just started pushing the wheelchair again as if it had never happened. Buffy and Willow slowed down so that they were a little closer to the girls both thinking about what just happened.

“Who the hell does that bitch think she is?” Faith seethed.

“Faith, it doesn’t matter what she says about me. I only see her once a month now so it isn’t that hard to ignore. Please don’t worry about it?” Tara tried to keep her voice calm but all three could sense that the other girl’s teasing did affect her. Tara was just happy that no one looked at her as a tear rolled down her cheek. She didn’t care what the girl had said because the girl was no one to her, but it didn’t mean that the words didn’t sting any less.

Looking up for just a moment, she noticed that Willow had turned around to say something and saw that she was crying. Whatever Willow was going to say died in her mouth as she saw the pain on Tara’s face. Her whole body wanted to run over and kiss her tears away. She stopped as that idea hit her. Why would she be thinking such a thing at a time like this? Willow knew that she wanted to move further in this relationship and could tell that Tara did as well, but now with the whole Faith issue she didn’t think it would be possible. “We’re almost there,” was all her mind could formulate as she turned back around berating herself for saying something that stupid.

Faith know that going to Giles’ house was a bad idea and as always her fight or flight instincts were taking over. The only reason that she hadn’t bolted was the fact that Tara was here, but her resentment for the blonde witch was returning the closer the got to Giles’. Why was she here anyway? The two hadn’t been on speaking terms for the past couple of years now, but the blonde was acting as if the fight never happened. Lowering her voice so only Tara could hear her Faith asked, “Why are we going to Giles’ in the first place? If you hadn’t noticed, these people don’t really like me all too much.”

“Because we need to sort all of this out. I need to know what is going on here,” Tara said her voice just as low.

It took all of Faith’s returning strength to keep from making a rude comment on the real reason Tara wanted to stay. Tara was using her mother voice and it had always driven her cousin crazy. “I’m just saying that I won’t be in this stupid little shit hole for much longer, so why do I have to deal with all this shit? And as I’m sure you found out I’m a slayer know so I could just walk off and there would be nothing you could say or do about it.” Faith liked the idea that her slayer strength allowed her to what ever she wanted. After everything that had happened, she knew this might not be the best way to go about doing things, but the power was just to intoxicating. She was no longer the weakling that had to watch her every step. As long as she could get away from Buffy then no one could hurt her.

Tara looked down at her cousin and frowned. “Faith we are going to deal with this now. For once in your life you are going to have to face reality, and just because you have super strength doesn’t mean I can’t keep you under control. You are going to this meeting and then we are going to have a talk afterwards. Am I making myself clear?” Tara’s voice was calm and that wasn’t a good sign, at least for Faith. She knew about the power Tara had but the thought that she would actually use it was new. Faith only nodded her head surprised and at the moment in defeat.

When they got to Giles’ place it had the feeling of The Spanish Inquisition. Inside Giles, Riley and Xander stood waiting. Buffy moved straight over to Riley as Willow tried to stand in the middle of the now two distinctly separated groups. She wanted to try to be supportive to Tara especially after what happened on the way over, but part of her still sided with the Scoobies. Faith had done a lot of stuff that they had to deal with and from the looks of it Tara was going to defend her cousin no matter what so at the moment they were on opposite sides.

Faith looked at the group and knew that this wasn’t going to be fun. Giles had an impassive look on his face, but she could see the rage hiding under the surface ready to dissect ever thing that Faith said for hidden meaning. Xander just stared at her with angry eyes ready to attack her for all the shit she had done to him eight months ago. The new guy was a shock. Faith and always thought that Buffy and Angel were meant for each other, so when it was obvious that she was with commando boy she had no idea what to think. Commando boy just gave her a look that said, ‘You hurt her and I will kill you.’ Willow seemed to be the only one partially on her side and it really wasn’t her side she was trying to be there for Tara. Why the hell was she still here?

Tara turned so that she was facing the rest of the Scoobies and was ready to defend Faith for all the shit she had done. From the looks on their faces, she had a feeling that her mouth might have bitten off more then she could chew. Taking a deep breathe she started, “I-I guess that Faith t-told you…”

“Red could I speak with you for a moment in private?” Faith asked.

Everyone was shocked by the request but Willow’s nodded acceptance was even more stunning. Faith stood up and brushed Tara’s hands away from her when the blonde tried to stop her. It was a little difficult for her to walk but she wasn’t going to let Tara wheel her outside and then ask to be wheeled back inside after their little chat. Willow just followed her confused at this sudden request.

Outside Faith sat down tired already from the small walk. Willow simply waited to her what she had to say. “Look, I know that we have a lot of bad blood between us, but that isn’t why I asked you out here. This isn’t about me but Tara. I don’t care if we never get all nice and play house together, because I have never been a team player and most likely never will. I just came out here to tell you that if you ever hurt her I will kill you without a thought. She is one of the only good things in my life.” Faith was finished. She wasn’t going to have some great heart warming talk this she just needed to tell Willow the facts so that if something happened then she could pretend she didn’t understand.

Willow only nodded her head. It was a perfect example of why she didn’t like Faith. With that done Faith stood up very slowly and started back into the house.

Tara was at Faith’s side the moment that she entered the door. Faith’s skin was pale and everyone could tell that she was having a hard time. “You know I remember the whole slayer healing thing working a lot faster than this.” Faith complained as she sat back down in the wheelchair. Willow moved over to stand next to Xander as her mind tried to digest everything that Faith had just said. She noticed that Tara was looking between them with a concerned look on her face, unsure of what had gone on outside.

Giles looked around at everyone and decided it was time for him to get the ball rolling. “Faith I would first like to say that I’m glad that you are better, but you must also understand our hesitation. Before…everything happened you turned your back on us so now we have to make sure that doesn’t happen again. Now with the added confusion of Tara’s presence…”

“There isn’t any added confusion. Tara didn’t even know I was a slayer until today. You guys can judge me all you want cause I don’t give a rat’s ass, but from what I can tell with the exception of Willow you have never seen Tara before so don’t judge her.” Faith was tired of Tara being looked down upon because of her actions and it was going to stop right now. They may not be on the best of terms right now but she was still the only person that had ever been there for her.

“I agree. We shouldn’t judge Tara yet. Tara why don’t we start with how you came to Sunnydale,” Giles said trying to keep everything at a calm level.

Tara took a deep breath as six sets of eyes fell upon her. “W-well a f-few m-months…” Tara started.

“Now what is the rule when ever you are around me, Tara?” Faith asked knowing she had to calm Tara down before they went any farther, plus it was one of the only go things she was able to win as a child and loved throwing it back in her cousin’s face.

“N-no…stuttering,” Tara said with a small smile.

Faith smiled back. “And if I catch you stuttering, then what happens?”

“You have the right to beat the crap out of me, but I still think that deal was unfair. I was ten at the time and thought you were joking.” Tara said in her own defense.

“Too bad you were the one that made the deal.” Faith said smiling at the knowledge that she had won that battle a long time ago.

Tara only rolled her eyes and turned towards the Scoobies with a little more confidence. “Four months ago I received a phone call from the hospital saying that Faith was in a c-coma…I was able to transfer to UC Sunnydale and have been attending college here ever since. I met Willow at the Wicca Group and when the Gentlemen attacked I went to find her since she was the only one that seemed to know what she was talking about. Throughout the time I have spent with her, I knew nothing about your history with Faith until now,” she finished a little amazed that she was able to speak that long without stuttering in front of strangers.

Giles was about to say something but Faith beat him to the punch. “So he doesn’t know that you’re here?”

“No I had a teacher help with my records and some scholarships. He doesn’t know where I am for now at least.” Tara said without looking at Faith.

“Who are you talking about?” Willow asked not liking what Tara was saying. The idea that anyone was going after the blonde scared her and she noticed that Tara paled again at Faith’s question.

Slowly she made eye contact with Willow. “My father.” After the words left her mouth she lowered her head allowing her hair to fall over her face like a golden shield protecting her from her fears.

Everyone was quiet for a moment trying to understand the two simple words that had come from her mouth. Faith would have laughed at the stupid looks on their faces if she hadn’t known the true depression behind those two words. She waited for someone to be brave or stupid enough to ask the next question.

“Why would you be concerned with you father finding you?” Riley asked not realizing that he just stepped on a land mine.

Faith gave a sarcastic smile. “Let me guess. You were raised in the wonderous mid-west with the perfect parents and every meal you would sit down and praise god. Then right before you go to bed they come in to kiss goodnight.” Riley straightened a little at the attack but was kept silent with Buffy’s hand on his arm. “That’s what I thought. Do you want to know how our fathers showed their endless amount of love for us?” She was about to go on but Tara mimicked Buffy’s action to silence Faith.

Buffy knew where this was going and it hit one of the many problems between the two slayers. “Oh is this where you’re going to lash out against us because you had a bad home life and we all had it so easy?”

Even Tara’s presence couldn’t stop Faith. “Okay, what is the worst thing you’ve ever doneas far as your mom was concerned?” Everyone could tell that Faith wanted to stand up not liking to be sitting down during any kind of fight.

Thinking for a moment before answering. “I ran away from home for a summer when I was seventeen.”

“And when you came back what happened, punishment wise?” Faith continued.

“I was grounded for two months and had to beg forgiveness from all my friends for weeks.” Even as she said it, Buffy realized how easy a punishment that was.

Faith nodded as if she was calculating what Buffy had just said. “Have you ever told your mother no, or didn’t do something she told you to do?” Buffy just nodded getting annoyed at the way Faith was talking to her. “And let me guess, you had an hour long scolding and that was about it.” Buffy just glared at her. “I’ll take that as a yes. Lets see, when I was seven I stayed out late to play with some of my friends instead of cleaning up the house for a get together he was having. It didn’t get done so after the party my father beat me with his belt, if I recall it was twenty-eight lashes, and I had a black eye the next morning. Trust me you remember the first time a leather strap shreds you skin.” Once again no one said anything too shocked by the degree of violence. The whole time Faith kept her eyes locked with Buffy’s. “So B, is it allright that I resent your home life now?”

“What does are home life have to do with why we are here? What happened back then?” Tara said finally having enough of everyone talking about things she had no idea about. That broke Faith roll and everyone turned to look at her. “Our family lives weren’t great but that doesn’t tell me why everything happened the way it did.” She looked around at everyone waiting for someone to start talking.

“Fine, I guess someone has to tell you what is going on, so why don’t we start at the beginning.” Buffy said with a sigh indicating that this was a long story. The blonde slayer explained how Faith was when she first arrived which didn’t seem to surprise Tara too much. Then she explained how Faith accidently killed a man but then said how Faith had changed. Through out the whole story Faith remained quiet as Tara felt like she was going to puke. Everytime she thought it couldn’t get worse Buffy went to the next thing. Finally the story was over and everyone just looked down at the floor.

Tara didn’t want to believe that all this was true. She turned to look at Faith and in a quiet voice asked, “Do you have anything else to add to this?”

Faith locked eyes with her cousin seeing a little bit of hope but it was clouded over with shock, horror and lastly shame. Never one to back down she stood up so that she was eye to eye with Tara. “What do you want me to say? I risk my life to save the world and with one accendent that even B will agree with I am a piece of trash. Can’t you be more like Buffy Faith? I don’t have to follow the rules anymore. I am strong enough to take care of myself and don’t need to be protected. So I made a couple mistakes but you will never see me crawling on my knees begging for forgiveness. It isn’t what I do.”

The Scoobies watched the scene expecting Tara to back down. Buffy could tell that Faith was in attack mode and was afraid that she would have to step in, but Tara stood her ground. “So you finally have the power you wanted all your life?” Tara asked.

“That’s right.” Faith countered.

As a single tear rolled down her cheek Tara replied, “I hope that you enjoy your power, because you’re just like him now. I want nothing to do with you.” With those words she walks out of the house.

Faith pales and starts shaking her head no. Running after Tara she catches her in the court just outside. “I am nothing like him! Don’t ever say that.”

“You enjoy the power and you use it on people that can’t protect themselves. You have become the one think that you hate in this world and I will not stay here and watch what you have become. After everything we’ve gone through, I can’t see it end up being for nothing.” Tara started walking again.

“NO!” Faith screamed as she picked up one of Giles’ potted plants and hurled it against the side of the house, smashing it into forgotten pieces.

Tara turned back at the sound and looked down at the now crumbled form in front of her. The blonde’s heart broke but she couldn’t support Faith in any way if she continued down this path. “Please don’t let the darkness take you Faith. You could do so much good with the power you were given. Don’t be him. Don’t let him win.” There was nothing left to say so she walked away from the only person she wanted to help more then anything.

Buffy and Willow ran outside just in time to see Tara walk off. Now all they saw was Faith crumbled on the ground mumbling to herself. “What have I done? What have I become? I can’t be like him. I can’t be like him.”

Part Four

Sorry that it has been so long. I hope that you like this next part.

Part Four

Willow and Buffy didn’t know how to react to the scene before them. Buffy looked at the only person who had ever made her feel like a victim and momentarily all other thoughts were driven from her mind by the sobbing rogue slayer before her. Somehow, Tara had been able to reach deep inside to a part of Faith that Buffy had never seen or been able to get herself. Shaking all of her confusion and resentment aside, Buffy moved over to the fallen girl gently picking her up. The less the neighbors saw the better. Heading inside the house she stopped turning as she noticed Willow wasn’t following.

“I need to make sure that she’s all right,” Willow said without looking back at her best friend. Buffy didn’t try to stop her though the redhead knew it wouldn’t have mattered; concern for her friend, if they were still that, dominated her thoughts.

Just by looking at Tara, Willow would never think of her as a fast runner, but as she has learned in life looks can be deceiving. It had only been two minutes since the blonde stormed off, but now she was nowhere in sight. The only hope Willow had to find her was the little she knew about the other witch. Her dorm room would be too obvious since that would be the first place anyone would look, so most likely she wouldn’t go there. The only other place she could think of was the park. Tara mentioned going there one day this week, but they just hadn’t gotten around to it.

For an early afternoon the park was fairly deserted, which made things easier. After about thirty minutes of searching Willow gave a sigh of relief. The blonde sat in the shade looking out into the small pond. Now that she had found the other girl she didn’t know what to do. Should she go over there and forget about all the questions screaming in her head, or should she ask them and possibly make the situation worse? Slowly she walked over to Tara and sat down without saying a word.

Tara looked up but said nothing as the redhead sat down. What was there to say? She had betrayed the woman that she loved, it didn’t matter that she hadn’t known about the deception herself. Willow had trusted her and now that trust was gone. She was just waiting for the redhead to say goodbye, but nothing was said. The two just sat there in silence looking out into the water. Finally Tara had enough of the silence and just wanted to have this over with. “W-why aren’t you yelling at me? After everything that happened back there you have every r-right,” Tara’s voice was soft. She knew if she said any more she would break into tears and that was all she needed right now.

“I think there’s been enough yelling for one day,” Willow said still looking out into the pond. “Are you all right?” Her body ached in its need to hold Tara but her mind pushed those feelings aside.

Of all the things Tara had prepared herself for this was definitely not one of them. Tara turned to look at Willow for her first time unsure how to react. “W-what!?” The blonde tried to say something else but that was all her brain could verbalize.

Willow gave a small smile even though it didn’t reach her eyes. “Do I have to make some stupid deal to keep you from stuttering, because I will.” The redhead tried to joke but saw Tara’s face crumble at the slightest thought of Faith. ‘Stupid. What a great way to shove your foot in your mouth,’ she thought. She hated to make Tara feel uncomfortable, but this was the best way for he to be supportive and let Tara explain Faith being her cousin at the same time.

“Why are you here?” Tara asked as she turned her gaze back towards the pond.

“Well, someone I care for is in pain and what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t try to help. Yes you didn’t tell me about your cousin being a psycho slayer but from what I can tell you didn’t know either so it wouldn’t be fair of me to hold that against you even thought I now have a lot of questions. Most importantly I think I should stop talking right now since I’m sure I’m not making any sense,” Willow finished her babble taking a deep breathe. She turned towards the blonde hoping to get any type of reaction.

Tara looked up at Willow, her eyes shining with hope. “Y-you still w-want to be my f-friend?”

“Of course I still want to be your friend silly,” Willow said as she reached out for the other girl’s hand. She could no longer ignore her need to be in physical contact with Tara. The spark she had felt that night was still there as their hands enclosed around each other. Willow made sure to keep eye contact because she had to make Tara understand she was being completely truthful.

There was a moment of silence as both girls delved through the windows of each other’s souls trying to wade through all the confusion and turmoil to find the connection that seem to have been there since the moment they met. The bond was still there, they just needed a little dialog to clear a few things up.

“Well, well now isn’t this sweet. I mean the only reason you became a lesbo is you’re too ugly to get a man, so you have to settle for female nerds. Guess your last date was only crippled in body and showed a small amount of intelligence by dumping your fat ass. Never knew you were a slut to boot,” Angela Allen said as she walked over to the witches followed by her group of lackeys. It was just her luck to run into Tara two times in the same day. When Angela had first met the stuttering reject the snobbish girl knew she had found her perfect victim. Tara would never stand up against her and would always shrink away after her joke was finished. With Cordelia and Harmony out of the way it was easy to take over their mantle, but she needed to put her first loser in her place before the group truly accepted her as the leader.

Willow had had enough of this. All of her life she had let stupid silicon cheerleaders that thought they had the right to push everyone around. When she met Buffy, Willow had a leader happy with who she was and to help others in need. Tara had never done anything to anyone and she put up with this crap never saying a word. No, this was not going to be happening anymore. “Well it would still take another ten switches this week for her to be as big a slut as you, at least that’s what the football team said. I think you should look in the mirror before saying anything about anyone else. You’re a pathetic Cordelia wannabe, who has no life spending all of your time making others miserable, because you don’t want to deal with your alcoholic mother or your father’s wandering eye.” Willow was shocked by her own cruelty and felt a little bad for her words, but Angela had to be put in her place.

Angela froze. She hadn’t expected Willow to react the way she had. For the most part the redhead was quiet when Buffy wasn’t around. She looked around at the other girls standing behind her and saw that they were waiting for her to react. To let some loser freak make a fool out of one of them was unthinkable. They would get rid of the objectionable member before letting that get around. “Oh you don’t want to start in on me loser. I have just been messing with your dyke girlfriend, but if you keep this up then I will start in on your sorry ass.” She felt proud expecting to watch the other girls shrink away.

That had done it. Willow stood up and moved to stand right in front of their witless tormentor. “I don’t think you understand. You and your little group of supermodel rejects are going to turn around and walk away right this minute before I decide to get really angry. Right now I’m thinking you would look good as a rat.” As the words rolled off her lips Willow’s eyes flashed with a fire that she had only used a few times in her life. No one was going to hurt Tara again if she could do something to prevent. A small voice in the back of her head started whispering, ‘Why are you being so protective?’

Not even the idea of being rejected by her peers would have kept Angela near the very pissed off looking redhead. Even with Buffy not around she had heard rumors about the redhead and the things she was into. The glint in the other girl’s eyes made all of her doubts about those rumors disappear. Angela turned away from the two girls and walked away with what little dignity she could retain. Her horde of preppy monsters walked the other way.

“I-I think we better g-get out of here,” Tara said as she moved behind Willow. She didn’t like the attention this had caused. Even though the park wasn’t crowded everyone that was there now seemed to be watching them.

“Fine, but I still want to make some type of deal so that you lose that stutter,” Willow said as they both walked back to Tara’s dorm room.

*****

It had been forty-five minutes since Willow left and still there had been no word. Buffy didn’t know if that was a good sign or a bad one, but either way she was still worried. Faith was still on the couch looking off into space, her face haunted with unknown memories that only she could see. Giles tried to talk to her, but the dark haired slayer was unresponsive to his every attempt.

Giles, Buffy and Xander stood a few feet away trying to figure out how to deal with the girl before them. “Do you think that Watcher’s Council knows that she is awake, because I’m not going to let them mess things up again. Maybe with Tara here we can help Faith get back on the right track,” Buffy said. The others could hear in her voice the uncertainty of that ever really happening. They all wanted to help Faith. She was one of the only failures they had ever experienced.

“I don’t know if she is going to help, with the whole walking away out thing,” Xander said as he ran his fingers through hair nervously. The idea of being so close to Faith was not a pleasant one after their last meeting and the lack of air she allowed to go to his lungs.

Buffy frowned. “With or without her help we have to do something. Faith can’t be let loose unless we know she is…better. I’m not going to get involved in another fight to the death so we have to take care of this as soon as possible.” The blonde slayer looked back at her younger counterpart concerned that she might never be reached.

“All that we can hope is that Willow finds Tara soon so we can at least get some answers,” Giles said trying to figure out solutions to this problem and prevented Buffy from dwelling on the past. No one noticed Faith’s eyes momentarily spark at her cousin’s name.

Sighing in frustration Buffy turned her attention back to the two men. “I don’t know, but in the words of my mother could she at least call to let me know. Riley said that he would contact us if he finds anything, but Willow is the only one that knows where Tara lives.” Buffy was about to say something else when Faith started to mumble.

“You better look in the backyard behind the cove that’s next to her house. She would always hide out there when Donny needed someone to pick on. But if you go out there and don’t see her then she probably just doesn’t want to talk to you because she can move as fast as a cat when she wants to.” Faith wasn’t looking at anyone in the room as she started in her rant.

Everyone in the room moved closer to Faith surprised at her outburst. “Faith, who is Donny?” Xander asked.

Faith looked around as if talking about this would get her in trouble. It was almost like she was a child again. “Tara’s brother. Don’t make him mad, unless you know how to run really fast or hide really well. He thinks he’s god’s gift when it’s more like Satan’s son, but don’t tell Tara I said that or she will get mad at me. She is always telling me to stop picking fights with him.” After the words left her mouth Faith looked around the room as she remembered exactly where she was. This wasn’t how Faith the bad ass, rogue slayer was supposed to act. Faith straightened her shoulders a little and started to get off of the couch. Smiling she started to walk towards the door as her slayer healing finally started to work the way they were supposed to.

Everyone else in the room started to her for a moment. Ever since Faith had come into their Scooby gang she had never done what they had expected. When they had finally thought she was going to break Faith came back stringer then ever, and when they thought nothing could ever take her down a few words seemed to have turned her into a broken child. Faith was still moving towards the door when the rest of the groups’ brains started to work again. Buffy moved in the front of the door and crossed her arms silently saying there was no getting out of the house. Not saying a word the dark haired girl turned around looking for another way out. Giles watched her surprised at how much she looked like a caged animal.

“Look I’m not going to be causing you guys anymore problems so why don’t you just let me go and then everyone will be happy,” Faith said as she started to move towards Buffy again. “Come on B, why do you want to deal with me when we all know that there is some big bad out there that you have to be all heroic about and slay.”

Buffy didn’t move from where she was standing. “I don’t know about that. Yeah, I would have no problem never having anything to do with you again, but I think Tara would have a problem with you going.” Everyone saw Faith wince but it was still going to take a lot for all of them to feel her pain.

“What are you talking about? Was I the only one listening or are you just ignoring the part where she wants nothing to do with me? She left me and that is all that matters.”

“She’s family and for the last four months she has been sitting by your hospital bed praying for you to wake up. I think that proves she cares about what happens to you,” Buffy reminded her.

Faith looked her dead in the eye as her teeth started to grind together. “Look I know you’re blonde so you might have problems understanding simple concepts, so let me explain this to you one more time. She walked away from me. For all the years I have know her she has never done that, and as for the waiting by my bedside she didn’t know who I was. She found out and made her choice. Now I’m outta here unless you want to try and make me stay?” Faith grumbled. She moved over to the door and stood head to head with the other slayer.

Giles watched the two girls and even though he wanted to see Buffy take Faith down a few notches he knew this would get them nowhere. “Faith, we can’t let you go running the streets. We have no idea if we can trust you not to hurt anyone. If you would be willing to work with us and show that you are not a threat to anyone else then we might think about some new arrangements.” His voice was a little harsh even to his own ears but he wanted to make sure that Faith understood that she wasn’t going anywhere.

Faith looked around the room and realized that she was going to have to fight all of them to get out. For once she would have to play things smart to get out of this problem. “Fine, if you want to play warden to get your kicks off then what can I do?” Faith moved back over to the couch.

As mansions go this place would be acceptable. Colin looked around the place he’d been staying at for the past year. Since he arrived he made sure to stay out of sight and watch the slayer’s strengths and weaknesses. Sunnydale wasn’t the first place he planned on staying but he had to follow the bait and that bait decided to head to hellmouth.

“I still don’t understand why you are doing all of this?” Cal said as he moved closer to his boss. Their relationship was based purely on power. Colin had it and Cal wanted it.

Colin looked up at the vampire. A smile crossed his lips as he watched Cal remain in the shadows of the room. Colin loved the sunlight and didn’t care about the inconveniences that it caused his underlings. “I had you call the blonde witch because she is the key to everything I have planned. Do you really want to question me?”

Cal took a step back knowing what happens to those that questioned Colin. “I would never question you sir. The men are just getting antsy and.”

“I think it is time for them to get a little action in their systems in their blood again. Plus I think it is time to introduce ourselves.” Colin said with another cruel smile.

*****

“Where do you want to start?” Tara asked as they both sat on her bed. She didn’t know how this was going to turn out but she was thanking the goddess for the chance to redeem herself. Her stutter was gone now that it was just them, alone in her room. There was no one watching over the two as she shared her past with the woman that owned her heart. If Willow asked her to she would reveal everything about her past except for one dark secret that no one could know, the one thing that haunted her even more then the abuse of her father’s hand.

Willow looked over at the quiet blonde in from of her and knew that she would be told the truth to any question that could ever be asked. “Well I don’t know? Ok, when Buffy and I walked into the hospital you were doing a spell. What spell were you doing?”

“I was performing a cleansing spell. Faith’s aura was clouded and I was trying to clear her spirit of whatever was troubling her. It wasn’t anything strong.” Tara answered happy that the questions were starting easy.

“I want to know about your childhood?” Willow asked.

Tara took a deep breath. This wasn’t something that she wanted to get into with Willow. Her childhood was not a very pleasant thing, and she tried to keep it was far away from her mind as possible. “I grew up in a town about an hour away from Boston. I have a brother two years older his name is D-Donny.” Tara stopped for a moment and closed her eyes. “Life wasn’t as bad for me as it was for Faith. The only reason why we turned out so differently is because I had my m-mother. She kept my father and brother at bay so they didn’t h-hurt me. When she d-died,” Tara stopped as tears feel from her eyes. For once she couldn’t push the pain away, the need to be comforted too great to ignore.

Willow moved closer to the blonde and caressed Tara’s cheek. She couldn’t stand to see the other girl in so much pain. There was plenty of time to have all of her questions answered. “That’s enough for now, baby. It’s alright,” Willow whispered barely able to get the words out as her emotions started to rise along with the blonde. Tara moved into the touch and opened her eyes. Willow looked at her with such kindness and caring as silent tears trickled down her cheeks as well. Then Willow surprised herself as she moved closer and kissed Tara gently. The softness of their lips on each other’s mouth was like two puzzle pieces fitting together perfectly. Both knew that things between them weren’t finished but they were healing. After a few minutes Tara pulled away and rested her head against Willow’s presence. “I just have one more question that I’m dying to know,” Willow said breathlessly.

“Anything.”

Willow smiled as her answer. “Does Faith really like Bach?”

Tara started to laugh. God no. I was playing that to piss her off. I thought playing Bach would annoy her enough that she would wake up just to shut it off.” Both girls laughed at the pure adacity of what Tara had planned.

woo hoo for a new update. I loved it...:D I know I know...I say that when ever I make a feedback post...but I only say what I mean. I love it so far and I am really looking forward to see where you are planning on taking this. Willow standing up for Tara was just so sexy...:D I can see an inkling of a reconnection between Buffy and Faith. I never got that ship when I watched the earlier seasons...but now I think I finally get it. Those two do just gel together.

I hope to see another update soon!

Part 5

Postby Hawk » Sun Apr 07, 2002 8:34 pm

Here is part five for all you guys to enjoy. I hope you like it.

Part 5

Willow and Tara walked silently back to Giles' hand in hand. The situation between them had improved and she smiled as she squeezed Tara's hand a little tighter. The blonde looked over at her and gave a small smile. They didn't have a chance to talk more about Tara's past, because Riley had come to Tara's dorm room saying that the rest of the group wanted to talk with them. However, she knew Tara would tell her anything she wanted to know. Willow smiled as she thought back to the kiss they had shared realizing that no matter what happened, Tara really did feel something for her. Unfortunately, the redhead was not as certain what her own feelings truly were though she thought she might be falling in love with the blonde witch. Now knowing something of her past made the redhead’s feelings grow. Willow saw what type of environment she was brought up in and then looked at the way Tara had turned out and that was all the proof she needed that the girl before her was special.

Looking at her watch, she couldn't believe it was only six in the afternoon. After everything they had gone through it felt like days not hours. Why was it for the Scooby gang things either moved too slow or too fast? Her senses were just accepting her blossoming feelings for Tara and it was quite a revelation. Her brain didn't know where to begin or end. Was it possible for her to love a

woman after spending her life only thinking about boys? Did something happen that made her turn gay like people say? 'Oh she had a bad relationship with a man and that's why she is playing for the other team now.' What would her friends say when she told them? How could she tell them? Faith already seemed to figure it out or at least the part where Tara liked her, would she say something? Tara? How did she get so lucky to find a girl like her? What did Tara see in her? She was a complete geek that started babbling no matter what the situation and she wasn't very attractive, but thank the goddess Tara hadn't seen her when the redhead was in high school.

Tara looked over at Willow and couldn't help but smile. Just by the look on her face and the way her eyes were glancing around Tara could tell she was in babble-think mode. "Willow stop thinking or your head will explode," she said in a soft voice hoping it was enough to bring the

other girl out of herself. Plus Tara was unsure of what the redhead was thinking about and her insecurities were starting to get the better of her.

Turning to the blonde beside her Willow couldn't help but give a little smile. "Thanks sometimes it gets a little noisy in here," she said as she pointed to her head.

"I wish there was something I could do about it." Tara said honestly looking directly at Willow. The blonde didn't know if Willow understood that Tara was being completely honest. She would do anything if the other asked her to.

Willow looked around and saw that they were close to one of the few alleys in Sunnydale. "Come on," she whispered as she pulled Tara along with her. The blonde didn't protest and followed without question. Willow might not know what her feelings were but she decided that she better test them out. Gently she pushed Tara against the alleyway wall just out of sight from the street. Once she was sure no one would see them, Willow looked deeply into Tara's blue eyes. She saw complete trust and maybe even a little desire. Slowly she brought her lips to the other girls' softly pressing then against the other girl’s. Tara relaxed as she felt a sense of complete peace and her body pushed against the thin frame of the redhead. It felt like a piece of a puzzle fitting perfectly together. Finally Willow released her claim on Tara's lips and they rested their foreheads together breathing deeply. "Thanks it's a little quieter up there now," Willow said with a coy smile.

"A-anytime," Tara replied breathlessly. She wanted to pinch herself to make sure this wasn't a dream. She wanted to stay like this forever, forgetting all the yelling and hostility they would have to face once they reached their destination.

Any questions Willow ever had about being able to be attracted to Tara, another girl, were thrown out the window. It wasn't just her body that felt perfectly connected with the blonde, but a part of her soul felt at peace. Her mind was still running out questions a mile a minute, but for once it was overshadowed by the joint effort of her body and soul. Willow reached up again and started to caress the other girl's cheek smiling when she felt Tara move into her touch. Even though she didn't want to move or think about, well anything but this moment, her sense of duty was starting to kick in. The Scoobies needed her and they had to figure out what to do with Faith, even though it would be painful for Tara. They had to make sure Faith didn't hurt anyone else and for Tara's sake maybe find a way to get the rogue slayer back on the straight and narrow. "We have to get going," Willow said, the disappointment evident to her own ears.

Tara frowned but nodded. She reached for Willow's hand as they moved out of the alley and back to Giles' house. Even as they walked Tara couldn't keep her mind on any dark thoughts or the pain Faith had caused her, she was on cloud nine. Willow liked her more than just in a friend type way. But the closer they got the stronger the dark thoughts became and started to eat away at her good mood.

Finally they reached their destination and both were reluctant to actually go inside. Outside of the building there was a sense of peace and a new found happiness, but within was a completely different story. Their hesitation disappeared when they heard a loud crash coming from inside followed by muffled yelling.

Willow and Tara rushed for the door fearful but desperately needing to know what was going on inside. The scene before them was complete mayhem. Tables were knocked over lying next to a couple of chairs and both girls saw a shattered lamp that they had heard moments earlier. Faith was struggling on the couch while Buffy held her from behind; Xander and Giles were barely keeping Faith’s flexing legs under control while Riley was trying to hold her down from the front of the couch. Willow looked at her friends and could tell they were barely keeping the dark haired girl under control. With Buffy strength wasn’t an issue and they did outnumber her, but the other girl’s determination was pushing the others almost past the breaking point.

All of the anger Tara was feeling towards her cousin was forgotten at the sight of Faith fighting for her life. Her brain almost shut down as the need to protect the only person she still considered her family set in. Rage flowed through her bypassing all her usual calming techniques before she could control it, her emotions exploded. "Get off of her," Tara yelled as energy flowed out of her body. A wave hit the couch and the Scoobies started flying in every direction. Everyone looked up at Tara in shock and Willow looked at her confused since the blonde hadn't even moved her hands towards their direction. Suddenly she realized what had just happened and looked fearful around the room as her heart almost stopped. "I'm so s-sorry. I d-didn't mean for that to h-happen. P-please forgive me. It was an old h-habit," Tara said looking wide-eyed around at the others praying that they would forgive her.

Faith looked around and figured this would be the perfect time for her to be leaving. Rising from the couch she felt a force pushing her back down and the rogue slayer couldn't move her arms or legs. Looking over at her cousin she understood why. "What the hell are you doing?" Faith yelled.

"Like I said earlier today you are not going anywhere until we figure this out. Since you seem unable to comply with that, you've left me with no other option," Tara answered her stutter non-existent as she focused on the other girl.

"Well you know me cuz, I hate having a curfew," Faith said giving a sarcastic smile.

Buffy looked between the two. She was about to have a few words with the blonde witch for throwing her across the room, but calmed down when she noticed the situation with Faith. "How long can you keep her like that?" She asked while thinking, ‘The longer the better,’ as she took a breath. For the past hour they had been doing everything possible to keep Faith where she was.

"I can keep it up for as long as it's needed," Tara answered looking directly at Faith to make sure she got the message loud and clear.

Faith glared at her cousin as an evil idea struck her. "Oh don't worry about a thing B. Tara is a little goodie two shoes and when she makes a promise it's a guaranty isn't it Tara?" Faith said

sarcastically. "All your life you’ve played the part of the perfect child no matter what. You're all

about controlling your emotions, but you have no idea what it's like on the other side. There isn't any control. I just want to get one thing straight with you miss high and mighty. You better take a closer look at yourself before you judge me, and don't you ever compare me to my father again!"

Willow moved closer to Tara not liking where this was going. Buffy was about to say something as well, but before she could Giles placed a hand on her shoulder to silence her. They didn't know anything about Tara and watching how this played out might give them an advantage in

the future. "See the main difference between you and me is that I know everything about you and you know nothing about what I've become. Over the last two years I've changed from the pathetic thing that I once was and you've remained exactly the same. But you’re not as good as you let everyone think. And I can prove it to." Faith said defiantly. Knowing that Tara would take the bait.

"Is that so?" Tara said her anger was starting rise. "Then please enlighten me."

"It would be my pleasure cuz," Faith smiled never leaving Tara's eyes. She knew this would be painful but she would do anything to prove she was right. "Do you remember James in sixth grade and how he would make fun of you so much you would end up running home crying at least three times a week." Faith watched as Tara's jaw tensed and knew she was on the right track. "Oh and lets not forget about Cousin Beth, or Sally Jones telling everyone that you had a crush on her then said she wouldn't touch you with a ten foot pole." Tara's hands started to clench and unclench. 'Now for the icing on the cake,' Faith thought though part of her was going to regret bringing the next part up. "And why don't we talk about Donny and what happened four

years ago on Christmas Eve. Red looks a little confused maybe we should explain what that means," Faith didn't have a chance to say anything else.

Faith had finally crossed the line and before Tara even realized what was she was doing all she could see was red. "SHUT UP!" Tara yelled as her anger flowed out of her body and hit the cause of her rage. Faith didn't have a chance to flinch as a wave of energy smashed into her. The couch she was sitting on flipped over sending the dark haired girl soaring in the air crashing against the far wall.

For a moment Faith didn't move and Xander could tell that she hit her head pretty hard when she impacted the wall. He was surprised that there wasn't a hole in the wall. He ran over to where she was slumped on the ground. She was just starting to come out of it. Her eyes slowly focused just in time to look into his and for a moment he was able to see her without her walls being up. As he gazed into her eyes he wasn't sure what it was that he saw but it was definitely different from what she usually allowed people to see. Once she realized that she was letting someone see her without the wall she tensed and quickly restoring it. After taking a few breaths she turned back to her cousin and gave a small smile. "See I told you. It feels good to make people shut up doesn't it? So don't judge me." Faith was done. She had one of the biggest headaches in god's creation. It was so bad that she didn't even notice that Xander was bracing her against himself.

Tara couldn’t believe what she had just done. It was if her powers weren’t her own. The magic was called on by something before she could think about stopping it and that scared her. Tara just looked down at her cousin as Faith’s ploy dawned on her. Her cousin said those things so she would understand the euphoric release to lashing out at people who torment her. She shook her head not wanting to understand what it felt like. Tara looked around the room horrified at the

looks Riley, Giles and Buffy were giving her. There was fear and suspicion in their eyes. Even Willow looked at her with trepidation. The redhead couldn't help but be concerned at what she just witnessed, but Tara smiled when the other girl took her hand and gave it a squeeze. She could read Willow’s eyes and knew this would just be another question on an already long list. Finally she looked back at Faith who was cradled in Xander's gentle arms. Tara could tell Faith was going to be in pain for a while even with slayer healing. "I-is there somewhere that Faith can lie down? A-and maybe some aspirin?" Tara asked her voice quiet though easily heard within the

room.

Giles nodded and motioned for Xander to help move Faith into one of the bedrooms upstairs. It was a little difficult at first since Faith didn't like the idea of being cared for but Xander's arms remained firmly around her waist until she was resting on the bed. Tara followed after Giles to make sure everything was all right and hopefully get some honest answers. She was tired of all the yelling and the accusing. Hopeful that without the rest of the Scoobies Faith would relax enough that she could find out what really happened.

Xander was tucking her in the bed as Giles left to get some aspirin and Tara stood by the door watching the interaction between the two. Faith protested a little mumbling that she wasn't a baby and didn't need to be treated like one and Xander just silent continued doing it not letting her get a rise out of him. Tara wasn't sure if he knew it or not but he had hit on something very important about Faith. She loved to be pampered but she would never admit it. Xander was about to move away from the bed when Faith put a hand on his arm. "I know I have no right asking you for anything but please tell Tara I didn't mean to go that far. Tell her I'm sorry." Both

heard the pain in Faith voice and Xander nodded. Tara stood in the doorway debating on how to take the next step. Xander turned around and saw her standing there. He gave a small smile as he walked out and down the stairs. Giles handed her the aspirin and joined the rest of the group. Leaving her alone with her cousin and silence.

Downstairs was a completely different story. Willow was trying to defend Tara against the rest of the group with the exception of Xander, who was sitting off to the side just watching. "She is not

evil, don't you understand that? I can't believe that I have to prove anything about my friends especially to you Buffy. We let you date a two hundred year old vampire that almost destroy the entire world."

Riley then and there was thrown out of the fight as he moved over to one of the only standing chairs and sat down. Buffy didn't even notice though as she stared at her best friend. "What the hell does Angel have to do with this? I'm just saying that we don't know a lot about Tara and after the little display we just witnessed I think it would be smart to take things slowly," Buffy said using a tone that Willow knew well. The 'I'm the slayer and I save the world, so listen to me and do everything that I say because I'm the leader of this group.'

Willow wasn't going to back down this time. After finding out how she truly felt about Tara not even her best friend was going to be able to keep them apart. "This is just like Angel. We accepted your judgment when he came back from hell and trusted you. Why can't you just trust me when I say I know Tara and she wouldn't hurt any of us." Willow looked at Buffy challenging her to say anything else.

"Willow, we understand that you’ve become friends with Tara,“ Giles began. “But you must understand our apprehension after everything that has happened over the last few hours. She has so much power and her control over it doesn't seem to be well in place." Giles tried to explain.

"I wouldn't say that." Xander said quietly. Everyone turned to look at him surprised that he would be defending Tara. "When I was leaving she begged me to tell Tara that she was sorry. She said she had gone to far and didn't mean to. From the sound of it Faith was hitting below the belt and that is most likely why she reacted the way she did. And as for her using her powers on us earlier, do you blame her? She saw all of us holding down her cousin who was fighting to get free. It was a reaction I think any one of us would have." After his speech was finished Xander sat back down finished with this subject. He had put in his two cents and even though he loved to

be in these kinds of debates he had other things on his mind.

Willow was grateful that she wasn't alone in this fight. She knew Xander wouldn't say anything else but just the fact that she didn't have to fight off another person was a plus in her book. Now it looked like there were only two people standing in the way of Tara's good name and she wasn't

going to let her girlfriend be looked down upon. Something in the back of her head did a double take as she realized that she just thought of Tara as her girlfriend and she liked how it sounded. "And don't even think of saying the whole Faith thing wasn't understandable. When Faith went bad and started pushing your buttons you didn't last much longer then Tara."

"Fine, but don't expect me to welcome her in with open arms. She’s going to have to prove that she is trustworthy," Buffy said. It wasn't much but it was all Willow could have hope for.

Buffy turned to look at Riley noticing that he hadn't said much and saw him sitting looking off into space. She didn't understand why until she ran the fight through her head again. 'Oh god he knows about Angel,' she thought. Taking a few steps towards Riley she didn't know what to say, how to handle this situation. Willow moved over to sit next to Xander her eyes glued to the room upstairs. She watched the closed door wondering what was happening upstairs. Giles looked around at the group and sigh then he went to make a pot of tea.

There's a lot of anger being passed round between Tara and Faith and it's worrying to wonder where it might end up. You seem to have created a convincing turn of events that might give credence to Tara's insecurity and need for love. Good job.

I would really like to see where you're heading with this. I am very much intrigued by Tara and Faith's past that had caused them so much anger and pain. More updates?

It wasn't just her body that felt perfectly connected with the blonde, but a part of her soul felt at peace.

Nice description of Willow and Tara's relationship.
