Song: "Hard To Say" by The Used
“I can’t believe you Xand! I don’t wanna go out tonight!”
“But, WILLS… I know you’re feeling down about Tara and I know you want to get your mind off of your other problems, sooo, I say, we go OUT!”
“But-”
“No buts Will. You’re going out with me tonight, and that’s final. I might not have as good of a resolve face as you, but I know I’m right!” Mustering up as determined look as he could, Xander looked Willow right in the eye. Willow rolled her eyes and sighed.
“Fine! But we’re not going to Hooters! Not like last time.”
“What? I like boobies and so do you, and you know they have the best wings-”
“Xander.” Willow’s resolve face slid into place, “I’ll go, but no Hooters.”
“Wills, I wasn’t going to take you to Hooters away, I just like to give you a hard time about it. I just want to check out this new bar that opened downtown.”
“There’s a NEW bar in Sunnydale?”
“Yeah, it’s the grand opening tonight and we HAVE to go.”
“Oh, really? And what does Anya have to say about all of this?”
“Don’t worry about her, she doing her own thing tonight.”
“When should I be ready?”
“You’ve got two hours.”
‘I can’t believe I’m here, God, I just want to be at home and mope. I think I’ve earned that right, girlfriend leaving me and all…’ Willow’s thoughts were interrupted by Xander.
“Alright, we’re here.” Willow turned her head to look out of Xander’s car window. She laughed disbelievingly.
“There’s no way in frilly heck I’m going in there!”
“Oh, come it’ll be fun!”
“A karaoke bar? Noooo.”
“You don’t have to sing. I mean just because there’s a thousand dollar grand prize for the contest tonight…” he looked to her and saw her glare, “okay, I’m dropping it. But really, this is supposed to be the best bar to ever hit Sunnydale.”
“Well, I do like the name, but it does seem oddly familiar…” Willow got out of the car with Xander noticing all of the people entering the new night spot. In blue neon, the name ‘Something to Sing About’, lit the brick building in a low glow. ‘That’s actually a pretty neat name, I would’ve never thought of that. Not like I can think of any good lately. Well, Tara’s a good, no great thing, but it’s my fault that we’re in this weird no talking thing. Stupid, stupid, stu-’
“Willow? Hello? Anyone in there?” Xander finally got through to Willow, who seemed to go into her own little world. ‘No surprise there, she’s been this way since Tara left. But we’re gunna fix that. I wonder if they’re here yet?’ “Come on!”
Xander grabbed her hand and led her into the bar, it was packed; it looked as if the whole of Sunnydale showed up. Yet, somehow, Xander had managed to get them a table. “Will, you stay here and I’ll get us some drinks, for I am PAY DAY MAN!” He shouted with the gusto of a superhero over the music playing in the background.
“Seriously Xand, do you have to do that every time you buy us drinks?”
“Yes, yes I do.” With that he headed to the bar. Willow looked around the bar and looked over all of the patrons. ‘God, every women in here reminds me of Tara.’ She saw a brunette woman coming out of the bathroom, ‘she reminds me of Tara with brown hair,’ she saw a pretty redhead, ‘she reminds me of Tara with red hair,’ she saw a man with a crooked smile, ‘God, he reminds me of Tara with a penis!’ Then, at a table near the stage, she saw a beautiful woman with long dirty blonde hair, deep blue eyes, and- “Tara?” Willow questioned aloud. She did a double take and realized that it was indeed, her Tara. ‘What in the hell is she doing here?’ she paused, ‘XANDER!!’ Who at that moment returned to the table.
“Your drink m’lady.”
“I can’t believe you did this!”
“What? I thought you liked dirty martinis!” He looked to the aforementioned drinks.
“Not the drink! The Tara!”
“What are you talking about?”
“Tara, over there by the stage!” Xander turned and looked.
“Oh, she’s here too? Hmm. That’s odd.”
“Oh, like you didn’t know.”
“Of course not. Now here, why don’t you take a sip of your drink and-” With that Willow grabbed the glass and drained it’s contents in seconds. Pausing only to take out the olives, which she then ate. “Or inhale it. Whatever. Do you want another?”
“Yes,” she replied distractedly, looking over at Tara.
“Alrighty then.” She saw Tara look towards her and she ducked under the table, hoping that she hadn’t seen her. ‘Can’t let her see me, drinking like a fish. Why did I drink that thing so fast away? Oh, right, Tara with her being her- all hot and all- and me being the reason she’s not here holding my hand or talking to me. I just had to go all black-eyed and kinda evil. I messed with her, violated her, but what can I do to make it up to her?’ Willow smoothed out hair down. She was determined to make it better, but how?
“Willow? Why are you under the table. Last time I checked that’s where all the old gum lives.” Xander’s shoes tapped as Willow looked at the source of his voice.
“Yeah, I was checking to see if a piece of gum I stuck under one of this tables a few years ago is still there, and it is! See that yellowish pink one? Mine,” she pointed to herself as she stood up, straightening out her skirt and blouse.
“You liar! You were hiding under the table because Tara almost saw you.”
“I have no idea what your talking about.”
“Oookay, Will, what ever you have to tell yourself.”
“But I-” Willow’s voice was cut off by the sounds of microphone feedback. She and Xander turned their heads back towards the stage to see a well dressed man tapping the mike.
“Well, well, well, would ya look at all the lovely people here tonight!” The audience applauded, including the standard catcalls as well. “So, as some of you may have heard, we are having a little competition amongst, well, you guys! The rules are simple, the names of those who would like to sing should be given to my buddies over at that table in the back with the sign that says- surprise- contestant sign in! Then when your name is called, go to the DJ and give him the song. And can you guess what happens next?” A lone voice in the audience shouted “SING!” He smiled. “That’s right, you sing, then our judges will choose the winner and that lucky person will win ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!” The audience cheered. “Well, that sounds like we might have some takers! So you have ten minutes to get your names to the judges, and then we’ll call you guys up one by one. So, take this time to do what you need to to get your nerves calmed, like get a couple of drinks from our fine Bar!” The audience cheered once again as the gentleman left the stage.
“He’s encouraging people to drink Before doing karaoke, this is going to be painful.” Willow rubbed her temples feeling the headache coming already.
“Nah, it just makes it funnier! I mean, come on, people losing the ability to speak properly and then trying to sing? That’s brilliant!”
“It’s like watching the rejects from American Idol, live and drunk. This doesn’t bode well.”
“Sure it does! Now here’s you’re drink-” Willow took the glass and took a big swig. “Willow? If you’re going to drink like that, maybe you should pay.”
“What? Oh, no, I Fine, yup, Finey McFine Fine.”
“Do you need a hug?” He offered seeing though that lie.
“I wouldn’t say no.” Xander smiled and hugged his dearest friend.
“I love you Wills.”
“I love you too Xand.” As he let go the room got quiet. The host had made his way back to the stage.
“Well, well, well, it’s looks like we’re going to have a hell’va contest. Our first contestant is- Willow Rosenberg! Willow come on down!”
To say Willow was shocked was an understatement. “Xander, what did you do?”
“Nothing. So, you going to sing?” He asked as the crowd began to chant her name.
“NO! No, absolutely, no! I can’t believe you would-” she paused to take a sip of her drink. “Do this. I-” Willow paused again, and looked around the room and saw Tara. ‘Come on Willow, sing.‘ She heard a voice in her head tell her. She then knew what she had to do. She finished her drink and made her way to the stage. She went to the DJ and gave him her song. The slow beat of the drums and guitars of The Used’s “Hard To Say” began. Willow climbed the stage and grabbed the mike and shakily began-
The singer finished singing and she's walking out
The singer sheds a tear, her fear of falling out
Willow felt tears building behind her eyes, but she wouldn’t let it out.
And it's hard to say how I feel today
For years gone by and I cried
She looked out into the audience and saw Tara looking back at her curiously. Taking a deep breath, she continued.
It's hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say I miss you
Since you've been gone, it's not the same
She locked eyes with the love of her life, baring her soul, begging for her to forgive her with her eyes.
My worries weigh the world, how I used to be
And everything, I'm cold, seems a plague in me
And it's hard to say how I feel today
For years gone by and I cried
She felt a tear escape and she didn’t move to wipe it away. She turned her eyes away from Tara, knowing if she kept looking, she wouldn’t finish.
It's hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say I miss you
Since you've been gone, it's not the same
It's hard to say I held my tongue
It's hard to say if only
Since you've been gone, it's not the same
As she sang, Willow could feel the memories of her life with Tara flooding over her senses. Walking, talking, hugging, kisses, secrets, giggles, love. God how she missed it. Another tear snuck out.
Worse than the fear it's the lie you told a thousand times before
Willow remembered the lies she told Tara, “I’m okay, Nothing happened, I'm in control of the power…”
Worse than a fear it's the knife
‘Yes, the knife I stuck in her heart, breaking it.’ Willow thought as she continued to pour her heart out.
But it's hard to say how I feel today
For years gone by and I cried
‘It may have only been weeks, but it’s felt like years, long cold, lonely years.’
It's hard to say that I was wrong
It's hard to say I miss you
Since you've been gone, it's not the same
‘Nothing’s right without you.’ She thought as she turned back to Tara, now fully understanding what she let slip away.
It's hard to say I held my tongue
It's hard to say if only
Since you've been gone, I'm not the same
‘And I’ll never be the same. I need you.’ She wished she could tell Tara this, but she knew it was to hard to say.
It's hard to say (God, it's hard to say)
‘It’s so fucking hard. Why did I let it get so hard? Why can’t I just tell her?’
Since you've been gone,
I'm not the same
The song ended and Willow wiped her eyes. The audience then cheered madly.
“Thank you,” she whispered into the mike, and left the stage, not daring to look at Tara yet again. She made her way back to Xander, who helped her to her seat. As many in the bar were standing and cheering.
“Good job Willow. Do you feel better?”
“A little.”
“That’s a start. Ready to go tell Tara that that was for her?”
“Not yet.” Any response Xander might have had was stopped by the host talking yet again.
“That was fab, and so inspired! So, I guess we need someone else to do better than that, and I think that’ll be tough. I wonder if our next contestant is up to the challenge. Well, Tara MaClay, are you?”
