                                Leave A Light On

Chapter 1

        Moonlight passes through a bay window of an apartment bedroom and a young golden haired woman sits perched on it’s sill. In her hands is an envelope. She shivers feeling a sudden chill invade her skin. But in truth she always felt a little cold these days. Her room was cold, her clothes were cold, her food was cold, and her bed was especially cold.

        Every action she made reminded her of things past. When she made tea she was reminded that she only needed to make one cup. When she took out clothes from her closet she was reminded of time when her closet was a double occupancy. All of that would then remind her of why she was now a table for one instead of a table for two. But this night was especially cold despite the Spring weather and in her hands was the source of that chill. The envelope had the return address of the Summers residence, and her eyes recognized the handwriting as little Dawnie’s. The contents of the letter however left her laboring.

                        Please R.S.V.P. if you can’t attend

                        so we find someone better to fill

                        your place.

                                        *cards designed by Anya Smith (soon to be Harris)

                                        and can be bought @ The Magick Shop on

                                        Main Street. Please think of us when purchasing

                                        items when you use this invitation at your

                                        purchase.

Tara had to laugh. Leave it to Anya to capitalize on the opportunity for free advertising. Tara’s hands were shaking as the content of the invitation began to seep into her mind, and then her heart. But then she saw a little arrow on the bottom right corner of the card signaling her to turn it over. On the back was Dawn’s handwriting

        Dear Tara,

        I know that getting this card is a bit of a shocker. But before you

        dismiss just listen or I guess read what I have to say. We all miss

        you here. The gang isn’t the same. I know you always make time

        for me but everybody really misses you. I just thought this would

        be a good time for you to get back into the gang. Willow didn’t

        want me to send this because she didn’t want to pressure you.

        She isn’t the same Tara. A lot has happened in the past 6

        months. She’s come a long way. You know I’m not just saying

        this because it sounds nice. I was really mad at Willow too after

        what happened that night.

        Tara got visions of Dawn in her cast with a big gash on her forehead. When she heard what happened that night her broken heart broke again. It broke for the dark place her ex lover had to be in to allow something like that to happen. It broke for the guilt she knew Willow would be feeling once she sobered up. It broke for the pain Dawn must have felt seeing someone she used to idolize in such a low state. It broke for the realization that she and Willow may never find each other again.

        But since then she’s really worked on dumping the magic. It was really bad

        in the beginning. I never told you cause Buffy said I should respect Willow’s

        privacy, but she used to get sick. She would wake up in the night screaming

        and sweaty and stuff. It took a while but now she’s old Willow. Different

        but the same ya, know. Anyway I know you couldn’t be around the gang

        with Willow being how she was but now that she is better I thought it would

        it good time to get back. Please come Tara. Even Giles is making the

        trip out! Please Tara.

        Tara felt the tears streaming down her face before she even realized she crying. She wasn’t expecting this. Had it been six months? Willow’s birthday. She always knew it was coming up but she tried to forget everytime she remembered it. She couldn’t. She wasn’t ready, for Willow, for all of them. What could she do, walk in there as if everything was okay now. She wasn’t ready. But as she thought about it, when would she ever be ready for something like this? How could you prepare yourself for seeing the love of you life after being estranged from them for months?

        Tara had to admit that the temptation was like an oasis in a desert. And Dawn said that she has changed. Dawn wouldn’t lie to her about that or exaggerate about it. Tara knew how disenchanted Dawn became after that night Willow took her to Rack’s. Dawn wouldn’t talk about Willow after that incident. Before the accident Dawn would always try to tie Willow into their conversation somewhere. But after that night she wouldn’t speak her name. If Dawn telling her that Willow was better then she must have made a difference.

        Could she do this? She already knew the answer to that. It wasn’t a question of could, she had to do it. Because a promise was made. A promise that no matter how lost either of them were they would always find one another. From what Dawn was saying Willow was doing her part to find them again, Tara had to do her part too. She had to meet her halfway.

        Tara suddenly started to feel the chill in the air melt away a little bit. She tried to ignore because she didn’t want to build up false hope, but the flame was there and it was starting to grow. Dawn once asked her if she still loved Willow. It really was a ridiculous question. It was never an issue of not loving her. It was more like together they built this house of love. But Willow’s actions were destroying the house, and Tara had to had to ask her to leave the house before the whole thing collapsed. But even though Tara asked her to leave she left a light on for her. She would always leave a light on for her, no matter how long it took. A light would always be burning for Willow.

        And with that Tara picked up her phone and dialed the Summers home.

The young voice of Dawn was on the other end

        “Hello.”

        “H-Hi Dawnie, it’s Tara.” Just breathe Tara. This is only the beginning.

Chapter 2

Willow was heading into the kitchen to grab herself a little dessert. She peered into the

fridge like a child looking into a toy store at Christmas time.

        ‘Hmm cookies...maybe some ice cream...Ohhh carrot cake!’

Suddenly her grin that brought on by thoughts of sugary goodness in her head turned into

a frown.

        ‘Tara loves carrot cake...she used to say how it reminded her mother and how

        she used to make a carrot cake for her birthday when she was alive. Stop fooling

        yourself Willow. It doesn’t take much for something to remind you of Tara. She

        is your whole heart...of course everything is gonna remind you of her. I have to

        stop doing this to myself. It’s not good for my recovery.’

She closed the refrigerator doors, suddenly not having much of a sugar craving anymore.

She headed into the living room and was alerted to the sound of Dawn talking. When she

entered the living room she saw her by the desk talking on the phone.

        “Really, you really really mean it. Oh thats great!...No, I know that. It’s just

        good that everyone will get to see you....Yeah it is late...I’m going to bed yes.

        Okay we’ll see you then...Bye!”

Willow could see that Dawn was really excited about whatever had transpired over that

phone call. She was really curious about who was on the other end. Dawn seemed to be

so high on cloud nine that she didn’t even notice Willow come into the room.

        “Hey Dawnie!”

        “Ahhhh!” Dawn screamed out of fright. Willow’s voice caught her off guard and

cause her to be a little jumpy.

        “Whoa there, just Willow here! What’s with the high octaves?”

Dawn finally pushed her heart out her throat back down to her chest where it belonged.

She answered,

        “Oh, sorry. Guess I didn’t see you there. Just wasn’t expecting ya.” She gave

Willow a smile hoping she would press the matter any further, but knowing in the back

of her mind that she wasn’t going to get off this easy.

        “Yeah I noticed that with the squeal. There’s probably dogs barking all over

        Sunnydale with that pitch you hit! So what had you so engrossed...sounded

        like you were pretty excited on the phone?”

Dawn winced when Willow said this. She knew that she was gonna have to eventually

tell her that she invited Tara to the party but she was hoping for some time to build up

some courage...and find some very strong amour since she had a feeling that this witch

was gonna go ballistic.

        “Oh, you know just getting some RSVP’s for the party.”

Willow was watching Dawn. Something was up. Dawn had moved over by the couch

was clawing at the fabric of the couch, her foot was tapping rapidly on floor, and her

smile looked like it was gonna cause her teeth to shatter from how tightly she seemed to

be grinding them.

        “Dawnie, what’s going on? Why do you look like a cat on the witness stand

        that’s on trial for eating the canary?”

        “What do ya mean?” Dawn started to back peddle hopping it would increase her

chance of escape. But she had no such luck.

        “You know what I mean...it’s why you’re backing up from me like you know

        I know something you don’t want me to know or you know that I know you know

        something you don’t want me to know. Either way I know something is up and I

        want to know that what something is.”

Willow wasn’t sure what she just said. It was heading into babble country but it looked

like Dawn got the message cause she looked like she was ready to crack.

        “Promise you won’t get mad?” Dawn pleaded.

Willow always hated when people asked that. How could you promise something when

you have no idea of what’s going to be said. Well, that wasn’t completely true. Willow

had a pretty good idea that whatever was going to be said she wasn’t going to like it. But

if she wanted to get an answer out of the teen she was gonna have to play along.

        “Ohhhkayy....now spill.”

Dawn drew a deep breath and then looked Willow straight in the eye. ‘Here goes

nuthin!’

        “OkaysoIknowthatyoudidn’twantmetoinviteTaratotheparty,butIsentheran

        invitationanyway.Ithoughtsheshouldseehowgoodyou’redoingbecauseyouare

        soooomuchbetternowandsheshouldseethat...and you promised not to be mad!”

Dawn went through that confession like her mouth was racing in the Indy 500 and despite

her impressive speed she got the feeling that Willow understood every word.

        Willow’s mind was flipping and it’s was matched by speed of the beating of her

heart. Tara. Dawn was on the phone with Tara. Dawn had invited Tara to the party.

Dawn had invited Tara to the party.

        “You did what! Are you crazy! Dawn I told you not to invite her. Why did

        you do that. Is this like revenge? Do you want to see me in more pain...”

        “Oh god no Willow it was nothing like that I just thought that...”

        “You thought what, that you could hurt me by inviting Tara only so I could get

        her R.S.V.P. ‘I won’t be there because I don’t want anything to do with you!”

        “Willow please, listen to me. I totally didn’t mean anything like that.”

Upstairs Buffy heard the sounds of loud voices coming from the living room. They were

the voices of Willow and her sister.

        ‘Oh great another squabble between the reformed wiccan and the warden herself.

I thought those two were done with the bickering. It’s moments like this that I really

miss Tara.’

Buffy headed down the stairs to end whatever dumb argument the two had gotten into.

By the time she got down there all she heard was gibberish because the two were

speaking over each other. Buffy was gonna put an end to this right now.

        “Okay tweedle dum and tweedle dumber. Cut it out right now!”

Both Dawn and Willow stopped yelling and looked straight at Buffy.

        “Now that my hearing is coming back to me does someone want to explain

        to me what the heck is going on?”

Buffy immediately regretted her choice of words the minute they left her mouth. Willow

and Dawn both decided to give their explanations. However they decided to give them

simultaneously. Buffy pinched the bridge of her nose with her thumb and forefinger, a

trait she borrowed from Giles, knowing that it was gonna take all the patience she had to

bring this cat fight to a close.

        “Okay, Shut Up! That was my fault. I should have been more specific. Willow

        would you like to explain to me why I am breaking up a fight between you and

        my sister, a fight I might add that is more often found on a grammar school

        playground rather than the living room of two young adults.”

Buffy heard a snort from Dawn and then the sound of her voice,

        “Oh sure. Now I’m a young adult! But when I wanna go out with my friends..”

        “Dawn, your about this close from never seeing those friends again so I would

        close that mouth until I say it’s your turn to tell me your side of the story.”

Buffy had walked right up to her sisters face and brought her hand up to Dawn’s face

with her forefinger and thumb together to help her sister visualize how close was close.

Once Buffy was certain that she had her cooperation she shifted her gaze to Willow and

lifted her eyebrows to signal her that she was waiting for her explanation. Willow began.

        “Look Buffy, I’m really sorry. It’s just that Dawn took it upon herself to invite

        Tara to my birthday party when I specifically told her not to. And I just don’t

        think I can handle that kind of rejection right now. I mean I not ready for that.

        Ready is so far from what I am right now, very far from ready. Fear, I have

        a whole lot of that, number one stockholder on the the fear factor here, yup

        whole mess of reserves on the mmphhplh....”

Buffy put her hand over Willow’s mouth in order to halt babbling that had the potential

to go on till the sun came up considering the state she seemed to be in.

        “Okay, I got your point Will, you’re not down with the whole Tara invitation

        thing because you’re scared she’s gonna turn you down.”

Buffy didn’t remove her hand so Willow just nodded her head in response.

        “Fine, valid point. Now I’m gonna remove my hand. But I need you to

        stay silent so I can hear Dawn’s explanation. Dawn?” Dawn gulped then replied,

        “ I know that Willow didn’t want to invite Tara, but I thought that Tara should

        come. Willow is doing so much better and she should see that. Plus she

        belongs with us. She’s a scooby. She’s family...you said so yourself Buffy.”

Buffy could hear the desperation in her sisters voice. She understood where her

intentions were coming from. But she could also understand why Willow was upset.

        “Dawn, we’re all proud that Will has found her way back to us and that she’s

        doing so much better. But that doesn’t give you that right to interfere with her

        life. It’s Willows party and she should have say over these things.”

        “I know but Buffy if we leave it up to Willow she’s never gonna take that step.

        She’s too insecure right now.”

Willow waved her hand in the air.

        “Hello, Willow person still in the room here. And as for taking that step, I

generally avoid steps that land me flat on my face.” Willow’s tone was very acidic. But

Dawn was ready.

        “Well that’s where you’re wrong. Because this step I took for you is gonna get

        Tara here. She’s just called to say she was coming.”

Buffy was trying to divert WWIII that was brewing in her living room.

        “Dawn please don’t make this any worse...did you just say Tara’s coming?”

Buffy’s eye’s were scrunched up in confusion. ‘Wow this is huge.’ But then the

magnitude of this revelation finally hit her and she turned to Willow to make sure she

was okay.

        “Will, you okay?”

Willow had slumped onto the couch and was staring intently out the window. She wasn’t

sure if her heart was beating, but she was pretty sure that all the blood in her body had

just rushed into her head. ‘She’s coming...She’s coming.’ She kept repeating it in her

head, trying to get over her shock and let this information sink. She looked up at Dawn

with tears in her eyes.

        “She’s really coming to the party. My birthday party. The party that celebrates

        my birth? Really?”

Dawn started to tear too. She understood how this had to shake Willow’s whole world.

She never meant to hurt the reformed wiccan.

        “Yeah, she’s really coming. She’s the one I was on the phone with. She sounded

        really nervous.”

        “Like good nervous or bad nervous. Did she stutter. Does she stutter when she

        talks about me because that means she’s uncomfortable and that can’t be good..”

        “Look Willow, I’m sorry I went behind your back. It’s just...you guys deserve a

        second chance but you’re too concerned with each others feelings to believe that

        you deserve one. But you do. You really do.”

Buffy could see that Willow was on the verge and decided she was gonna need some

private time with her friend.

        “Dawn, why don’t you head up to bed. It late and you have school tomorrow.”

Dawn complied and headed up the stairs giving the two girls the privacy they needed.

        “Will...Will can you talk to me. Are you okay with this. You know you

        shouldn’t hold stuff like this in.”

But once Dawn was out of sight Willow fell apart and started to sob. Buffy ran over to

the couch and wrapped her arms around her best friend.

        “Oh God Buffy, I don’t know if I can do this. I mean it’s what I wanted for so

        long but now...I messed up so bad...what if I do it again. What if she comes here

        just to tell me in person that she can’t ever be with me again. I couldn’t handle

        that Buffy. I’m not strong enough for that. I can’t believe this is happening.”

        “Listen to me Willow. Do you want Tara back in your life?”

        “More than anything!”

        “Then you have to face this. Granted this is a little off guard since you didn’t

        plan it, but that doesn’t matter. If you want Tara back then you have do this.

        I’m not saying that it’s gonna be fine, that she’s gonna show up here and you

        to are going to run off into the sunset. But this is where it starts. If you believe

        in the love you have for her then this is how you show it. You show her that you

        found your way back, that you found your way back to what really matters.”

        “Okay....I ...you’re right...okay...I’m gonna do this...” Willow looked at the floor,

she knotted the fingers of her hands together, and her body started to rock back and forth.

        “Listen Willow, you have a few days till the party. That gives you some time

        let this sink in. And we’ll all be here for you. We’ll get through this together.”

Willow looked into the eyes of her best friend and gave her a half smile to show her

gratitude. Then she said,

        “Okay...Okay.” ‘Just breathe Willow. This is just the beginning.

Chapter 3

Tara was losing it. Suddenly she had nothing to wear! Not that there are standard outfits for the occassion of seeing your ex-lover of six months. Tara knew it really didn't matter what she wore, Willow never really cared about those things. She would let Tara know when she found something she wore to be pleasing. But Willow always left her feeling beautiful, even in sweats and t-shirt, she felt beautiful. Tara hadn't felt that way in long time. It was kind of strange when you think about it. Her hair and body were the same, but that feeling wasn't there.

        Finally she decided on a long, wrap around skirt with a yellow background, and patchwork designs on it. She wore a three-quarter length, white button down shirt and stood on sandals. Her hair was half up in a clip. Ligth make up surrounded her eyes, and her lips glistened with gloss. This was finally it. No more stalling. Time to head out and face the music. Outside she heard the sound of a car honking, alerting her that her cab was waiting. With a final look in the mirror she was out the door.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the Summer's house a birthday celebration was in full effect. But Dawn didn't notice because she was perched by the living room window. She peered out the window as if a parade was coming down the street. But nothing was there.
        'Where is she? Come on Tara. Please....' Her thoughts were interupted by the voice of her sister beckoning her.
        "Dawn, where have you been? You're missing all the fun."
        "Which fun would that be? The alcohol I can't drink, or the conversation I'm too young to listen in on?" Dawn didn't mean to snap at her sister but all her energy was being used up by her patience and that didn't leave much room for courtesy. Buffy picked up on the anxious vibes that were pour out of her sister. She stepped up behind her and rested her palms on Dawn's shoulders.
        "Still no sign of her huh?"
        "Buffy what if she doesn't show up? I told Willow that she was coming. But if she doesn't come..."
        "Dawn if Tara doesn't come it's really not any of our business. But I doubt that's gonna happen. Tara would let us know if she wasn't coming, she very mature that way. She is probably having a huge case of butterflies in the stomach. This is a big day for her and Willow."
        "I know..."
        "Why don't we move away from the window so as to avoid the stalker like appearence we would be giving off should she pull up right now."
The two sisters headed back into the kitchen and then proceeded on to the party in the backyard. Just then a yellow taxi pulled into the driveway.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        "10.50$ miss." The cab driver altered Tara of the fare. She handed over fifteen dollars to the man.

        "Thank you, and keep the change." She opened the door and stepped onto the sidewalk of the Summers house. As the car pulled away Tara looked at the house. It suddenly looked very big, and she felt very small.

        'Come on Tara. You got yourself into this . Here it is...the moment of truth.'

She walked heavy footed up to the front door. She raised her hand to knock on the door and as her knuckles touched the surface the door opened before her. Someone must had left the door open by accident. She felt funny walking in but pressed on anyway. As she walked through the living room her sense were filled by familar sights and smells. She could feel her chest tightening. She clenched the straps of the purse in her hand and placed the palm of her right hand over heart. As she entered the kitchen she could see all the party fixings around her and could hear sounds of music and chatter come from the backyard. And as she walked around the island and came upon the window she saw it. She saw her.

        'Just breathe Tara.'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Willow was standing by the food table find the texture of potato chips suddenly very interesting. She was dressed in a pair of low hip hugger jeans, thick cork heeled flip flops, and a body fitting red shirt that bunched togther and hung low around the chest. She was dragged out of her intense thoughts by the sound of Xander.
        "Hey, Willster! So how does it feel to know that in all fifty states you can purcharse a firearm with one hand and a brewski with the other." Xander smiled hoping he could lift the red heads spirits.
        "Oh about the same as when I could purchase a soda with on hand and wave a really big stick with the other." She gave him a half smile trying to show her gratitude of his efforts.
        "She'll be here Will. Just give her time."
        "You don't know that, and I've got all the time in the world, it just doesn't mean much without her here to share it with me."
        "I do know it Will. And so do you." Xander wrapped his arms around her shoulders and pulled her into him in a close embrace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        Tara saw her and her breath was caught. She was beautiful as ever. Her hair was a little longer than when she saw her last. It was hanging full and loose, and Tara had to bit her lip to chase away the memories of when she would run her fingers through it. She took a deep breath and headed out the door. She made her way around to the back and hit the wood of the deck. As the sound of her footsteps hit the surface she heard the party go silent. It was like something out of a bad 80's move where everyone turns and looks at you and even the music skips out. But this was real. Her eyes glanced over the familar faces at the party and then finally settled on Willow.

        Willow pulled herself out from Xander's arms needing all the available air around her. She saw Dawn run up to Tara and tackle her with Buffy trailing behind.

        "You made it! I knew you would come. Not that I doubted it for a second." Tara smiled at this comment.

        "Yeah, sorry about the lateness. I ah, c-couldn't decide on anything to wear." She gave a half smile.

        "Well, it was worth the wait. You look great! It's good to see you." Buffy gave Tara hug and smiled. As Tara leaned into the embrace she found herself face to face with her ex-lover. Willow was standing right behind Buffy with dazed look on her face. Buffy felt Tara stiffen in her arms and questioned if she was okay but stopped mid sentance when she saw what had caught Tara's attention.

        "Tara are you....Ohhhhkay Dawn why don't you help me get some of the appetizers from the kitchen." Dawn complied and followed her sister into the house leaving the two wiccans alone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        They stared at one another for some time, although it felt like an eternity for both of them. Finally Tara broke the silence.
        "Ha-Happy B-Birthday Willow." Tara cringed inside hating that her stutter was making an appearence. Willow cringed inside too hating that she herself was the source of the stuttering.
        "Hi....thanks for coming...I know it's.....well...thanks."
        "Of course...it's a big day for you." Tara smiled and thought that if the conversation didn't take a significant turn they wouldn't have anything left to say.
        "I'm sorry Tara. I know this is really high on the awkward scale. I just don't know what to say...well I do...I've actually been practising it for a couple of day now. But it just seems." Tara understood the problem and offered a solution.
        "M-Maybe we could sit on the porch...it's a little more quiet out there....or not...I don't really know the answers either...I-I've never.." Willow jumped in.
        "No that would be perfect. Let's go."
The girls worked their way to the front of the house, raising some eyebrows and causing some stares from the surrounding audience. As they got to the front they decided to sit on the stoop. The swinging bench had too many initmate past moments in their history together to sit on. Their was awkward silence again then Willow spoke up.
        "Look Tara I'm just gonna say this real quick. I know that whatever happens tonight...it is still only one night, and you can't do alot in a couple of hours. But I can tell you something that you deserve to hear. Something I couldn't tell before because I didn't understand it myself. I guess I had to go through what I've gone through. Well obviously I had to go through what I've gone through otherwise it would just be something I already knew, and by that logic if it was something I already then I couldn't exactly re-learn it. Actually I could if I forgot it beacause....." Willow was interupted by the sound of light giggles. When she realized that she had gone into babble mode she apologized.
        "Oh sorry...babbling..got off track."
        "No, it's okay...it's just been a while."
        "Yeah, I guess it has. Let me try this again."
        "Take your time Willow...I don't have anywhere to be just now." Tara smiled and Willow melted. She melted and was finally ready because that smile reminded her that it was okay. This was Tara. She could do this.
        "Okay...I guess I could tell you everything that I think you already know, like... that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything that happened, and I never meant for it to happen. I was doing too much magic and I should have listened to you. I betrayed you, and manipulated you, and I take full responsibility. I could tell you all that but I wanted to tell you something else first. Something that you may not know.
"I realized something while I was alone. I realized that I'm a whole person without you and I was a whole person before I met you. I can get up in the morning, brush my teeth, take a shower put on my clothes and go about my day. You left me but I'm still alive and kicking. But you wanna know the truth. I'm alive but I'm not really living. I'm just existing...surviving. Everything is in slow motion, the colors are gone. I know that sounds so cliche' but it's true.
"At night I have the worst nightmares. They are dreams filled with visons of you, your smile, the way that your hair sometimes falls down and covers half of your face. It's filled with sounds of your voice, your laugh, your beautiful, lyrical laugh. These dreams are so beautiful, but then I wake up and realize that they were only dreams. That's when they become nightmares. I wake up in a cold bed, to go live in a cold world.
"I have this heart inside my chest, and it beats on a steady rhythm. But that is all it does Tara. My heart used to sing, my heart used to sing when you were in my life.
"I also realized something else. I realized that I don't deserve you. Your love for me was honest and pure, and I spat on it. I guess the noble thing to do would be to walk away from you. To let you live you life and find someone that won't betray you. But I can't. I won't walk away.
"I've made so many mistakes and have so many regrets but the best thing I ever did in this world was love you. You are the reason that I believe, after all the hell and evil and pain that I seen living on this hellmouth, you are reason I still believe in what is good. You are the reason I believe that there is good to be found in this harsh world, and I won't give up on that.
"I gave up on that once, I won't stand here and give up on it again. I love you. I think I love you more than I ever did, if that's even possible...because I have seen what it is to hurt you, to be without you in my life. I know darkness now, and knowing it makes the light so much brighter.
        "If you can look me in the eyes now and say that there is no room in your life for me, then I will try to be noble and walk away. But if you can't say that to me, then I'm gonna fight for you, I'm gonna fight like I should have fought before. I won't give up this time. I love you Tara."
Willow exhaled. She hadn't expected to say that much. But six months is a long time and love is a complicated thing. She looked into Tara's eyes not wanting to pressure her but also waiting anxiously for a response.
        "Tara...." Tara looked up and opened her mouth to respond.
        "I c-can't..." Willow heard those words and her heart shattered. But then Tara continued her sentance that she was struggling to get out.
        "I can't look you in the eyes and say there is no room Willow...I want...I just." Willow was so elated by Tara's confession that she didn't want her love to say anything else. She knew she had just gone through a long speech and didn't want Tara to feel pressured to respond to all of it.
        "No...shhush..it's okay. That's all I needed to know. I won't ask anything else of you tonight. I said a lot. Well, actually I need to ask you one more thing." Tara had tears in her eyes, and her body was suddenly feeling very heavy. But she looked Willow in the eye and said
        "Okay." Willow took a breathe then asked,
        "Can I see you again, after tonight?. The two of us. No labeling or pressuring. Just to talk some more after we recover from tonight "
        "I c-can't make you any promises Willow. I not ready...there's so much...I still hurt."
        "I know, I just mean so we can talk. Tonight is a little awkward. I know you have a lot you need to say to me...the atmosphere isn't very conducive though." Tara thought about this. It was true, she had a lot she needed to say. But this whole night left her drained and she wasn't sure she was up for an intense conversation right now. At least if they met again the ice is already broken, the card are out so it won't be as nerve racking.
        "Okay." Willow felt her heart leap into her throat. She wanted to make sure she heard right.
        "Okay?!! Really!"
        "Yes, it's probably best." Willow wanted to grab Tara in her arms but she knew that wouldn't be appropriate right now. So she settled for a really big grin streching from ear to ear.
        "Okay...Um how about Tuesday around 3 or so. I could meet you at your place since it's near campus." Tara nodded. Her heart was beating a mile a minute but she was trying no to show it. The smile on Willow's face was infectous and she couldn't help but return it.
        "That would be fine. I guess Dawn told you where I lived then." Willow winced.
        "Oh yeah, sorry. I kinda pulled it out of her. I' m sorry. I don't mean to be creepy ex-lover Lifetime move of the week character."
        "No it's okay. I understand." And she did. How could she not. Tara recalled many nights staring at her ceiling wondering what Willow was doing. Now they were at an awkward part again neither knowing what they should say. Tara spoke first.
        "You should get back to your party. They're probably all wondering where I took you."
        "Let them wonder." Willow really couldn't concern herself with anyone but the woman in fron of her right now.
        "I should go anyway...It's getting late.."
        "I understand. Let me get Giles to give you a ride home, he probably wants a chance to say hi to you anyway."
        "Oh, I forgot Mr. Giles was here." Willow stood on the step and in instinctual move offered her hand to Tara to help her up. Tara automatically reached for the support. The minute their palms met they both felt an electric pulse course through their bodies. They stood there not letting go of the hold. Then Willow saw a tear run down Tara's face.
        "Tara, what's wrong?" Tara looked Willow in the eye and gave Willow her tradmark half smile.
        "Nothing, it's just...Willowhand." Willow understood. As they separated and walked on back to the party both had the same though pass through their brains.
        'Just breathe. This is only the beginning.'
Chapter 4
        'Why did I agree to this?' That thought kept running through the mind of Tara as she was running across campus to get to her apartment.
        'Why did I agree to this? A couple of weeks ago I was fine. I was going to class, getting my work done, my apartment was finally starting to look like a home. Now I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't pay attention in my classes and I look like I got dressed in the dark all because of what awaits me at three o'clock today... because of her. So why in Gaia's name did I agree to this?
        'You already know the answer to that. But I was doing fine! I was doing really good. Then a few babbling words from her and one touch and I'm broken down again. Actually a few beautiful, pouring out of the heart words, and one exquisitely electric touch to be exact. Willow... even my heart stutters at the thought of her name. She looked so tired. Her eyes... they looked like a storm had just laid waste to them. She looked broken... just like me. She said she was gonna fight for me. Are you going to fight for her?
        'I'm not used to this... I was always the one left behind. I'm good at being the one left behind. I don't know how to be the leaver. The words Willow said... the way tears formed in her eyes like water filling to the brim of a cup and then running over. I wanted to hold her so bad, to run my fingers through her hair and calm her like I always could. Before we broke up, before Buffy came back... I remember how each night after patrolling she would curl up on our bed and rest her head on my stomach. Her fingers would paint invisible pictures across the skin of my tummy, and I would hum to her while I ran my fingers through her hair. Could it ever be that way again? I want it to so badly.
        'You know why this is so hard. It's hard because no matter how much you said otherwise there was a part of you that believed you would never get her back. And slowly, over time, you resigned yourself to that, to a life without your love, to this cold life. But here she is now, like the appearance of the sun after a stormy night of lightning and thunder. Can the daylight ever be the same after witnessing a night like that? But I want to step into the sun, I want light on my face again. Willow was right... I'm alive, but am I really living?
        Tara finally got to the door of her apartment and fumbled with her keys as she tried to get in. Upon entering she looked at the clock on the wall. 'Okay, 2:45, I have fifteen minutes to compose myself. Come on Tara... you can do this. Just breathe... this is only the beginning.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Willow found her steps getting shorter and shorter as she entered the hallway of Tara's apartment building.

        'So this is where she lives... it's pretty, nice wall color... of course, if you think about it, who really spends enough time in the hallway to pay attention... if you are out in the hallway then all you are focusing on is getting out of the hallway and into your room so all the effort put into it really goes unnoticed.. .unless of course you're a building inspector but even then you would be more interested in the presence of stable walls and not the lovely shade of blue that decorates them... unless the inspector has some weird Martha Stewart Living obsession and in that case they are just evil anyway so their opinions are moot... STOP babbling Willow! You aren't even in the room with her yet and you’re going into babble hyper drive, or like ludicrous speed... Oh! 'Space Balls'… funny movie!

        Suddenly, she was there. Room 819. Willow noticed that her hands were shaking as she raised them to the door. On the other side of the door Tara's heart jumped as she heard the gentle tapping on her door. A few seconds and then the door opened.

        "Hi Tara... Am I early, I don't want to rush you it's just that I was on campus and I thought it was gonna take me longer to find this place, but it was really easy to find, really good location, and that's what they say about real estate anyway right, 'location, location, location,' its really nice, and the hallways are pretty." Willow thought her babbling was bad enough but 'your hallway is pretty'... ‘Who in the heck says that? Real smooth, Willow.’ The babbling had actually eased Tara's heart that was racing at a new record. At least she wasn't the only one with an uncontrollable case of the nerves.

        "No you caught me at a g-good time. I just got back from class."

        "Oh really, what class are you taking?"

        "Oh the 'Mythology of Ancient Babylon.' Sometimes the lectures tend to drag."

        "Yeah, I have professor like that, umm.... did you want to talk here? Cause if you do then that's totally fine." At first Tara was confused by the question. Then she realized that she hadn't asked Willow to come in.

        "S-Sorry, I don't know where my head is." Tara moved out of the way to let Willow in and stared at the floor in embarrassment. She tried to hide behind the hair falling at the side of her face. Willow picked up on this trademark move. Tara always did it when she felt like she did or said something wrong. It brought a smile to her face as she thought about one of the first times she recognized this motion. It was early in their relationship and they had yet to cross the friendship line. That time she met her downcast eyes and brushed Tara's hair behind her ear. It was one of the first physical intimate touches she initiated. Now she was at that point again, but this time she opted to just lower her own head and meet the downcast eyes of her ex-lover.

        "It's okay, I think your head is the same place mine is... I haven't exactly been running full steam ahead since the party." Tara raised her eyes and smiled in gratitude. Willow could always do that for her, pull her from her shy, submissive stance and make her feel whole again. As Willow came in she looked around the apartment. It was small, but had all the necessary components as far as she could tell. The kitchen was off to the right, with a small dinner table adjacent to it. In front of her was a couch facing left where a window let light into the room. A small table was in front of the couch. A small console with a TV, VCR, and cd-player was directly in front of the couch against the wall. And directly ahead of her she assumed was the walkway to her bedroom. As she stared at the bedroom door she saw it creak open. Something started to peak out of it. Suddenly the object leaped out and revealed itself as none other than Miss Kitty herself.

        "Oh Miss Kitty! She's all big now... still cute though." Willow bent down to pick up the cat. She started to nuzzle the cat's face but then realized that she may have acted to too impulsively, after all this was Tara's cat now.

        "Sorry, Tara... I didn't mean to... I just..."

        "No, don't be sorry, it's your cat too... she'll always be your cat."

        "I missed her a lot... you think you know how much you miss something and then you see it again and you realize you had no idea how much you missed them."

        "She missed you too... very much." Both of the girls were looking directly into each others eyes. Willow looked at Tara intently and then deposited the cat on the floor, and asked Tara what they both were thinking.

        "Are we still talking about the kitty?"

        "Maybe not."

        "Not much of a segue was it."

        "We tried."

Now the girls felt awkward. They avoided eye contact hoping that something in the room would give them some direction. Then Tara broke the silence.

        "W-Willow, you said a lot to me the other night. I want you to know that I heard you. I heard of all it. I thought after having a few days to let it settle in I would have something to respond but..."

        "I know Tara... just... say anything. I'll wait... but…"

        "What?"

        "Tara I don't want to pressure you. Ummm... could we maybe sit on the couch? My legs are starting to feel really heavy." They moved to the couch and then Willow spoke again.

        "I don't want to pressure you but there is one thing I need to know. I don't want to put you on the spot... I need to know if..." Before she could finish Tara responded. She met Willow halfway.

        "I'm still in love with you Willow." Willow was stunned speechless, she wanted to scream for glee and smile, but she was paralyzed with fear that what she just heard was only a part of a dream. Tara continued.

        "That's what all my thinking came down to after these last few days. I still love you. You know, for so long, people told me I would move on. That time would let me get over you. That if I just kept getting up in the morning it would suddenly be okay one day. That loving you would just be part of my past. And in the beginning, I started to hope they would be right. That this aching in my chest, this emptiness, would someday be gone... my love would be gone. I didn't want to love you because it hurt so much to hold on. And everyday I would be reminded that it was another day without you. I wanted it to stop... the memories... the hurt... the anger. I didn't know how I could be so mad at you and so in love at the same time. I wanted it over. But I would wake up and it was still there. And I think I just decided that's the way my life would be... me loving you from a distance. I still love you Willow, but I still hurt too."

        "Oh god, Tara. I love you so much. What does this mean for us? I want to know the right thing to do. I mean, I know what the right thing for me is. Magic is over. I don't want any part of it. Not just dark magic. I don't have a right to be a part of any of it. But I did that for me. This sounds weird, but I realized that if I wanted to get better, I couldn't do it for you. I had to do it for myself, to believe in myself... to believe I could still love myself even if I wasn't a Wicca super hero. But as I did that I figured it out. That by being better for myself I was being better for you too. Because you're in me... ya know?"

        "I'm always with you Willow. But... there is this part of me that feels I… that feels I f-failed you." Willow couldn't believe the words that were coming from Tara's mouth.

        "Tara… failed? I failed! I'm the one that let this magic take over me. Me, Tara, Me. You did nothing but love me!"

        "But I saw it coming… I saw it coming and I said nothing… because… Oh god, why can't I j-just say this."

        "Tara please tell me… don't hold this in."

        "I'm the reason you even touched dark magic at all, and the only reason I can be here as a whole person right now is because of that dark magic that you had the power to invoke. I got hurt… I ran out when Glory was around. If I had just stayed inside… this whole..."

        "Tara no, oh no, please, you can't think that!"

        "Willow, I never should have agreed to a lot of things. Before Buffy came back you had to use these tough spells to patrol. What was I going to say? 'You can't use Dark Magic, Willow, but it's okay that you brought my mind back with it?' And then the resurrection spell came along. I knew that a line would be crossed, but because of this guilt, I let you do something I knew would in some way come back to us. You were in such pain when Buffy was gone, I couldn't reach you. How could I lecture you on doing dark magic to save your best friend when every day I have, I owe my life to that dark magic?" Willow was trying to keep up with all that Tara was saying but it was hard because this admission was so unbelievable. She couldn't understand how Tara could feel guilty about any of her actions. She continued to listen as Tara went on.

        "By the time I said something it was too late. You were using the magic all the time… and then you used it on me. I got so scared... so scared when you did that forget spell on me, because I felt like this was nature's way of giving back times three. It was our price for the power invoked... I saw how far gone you were and how I had f-failed you. But I also thought my love would be enough to save you. That what we had was stronger than the magic... and then I heard about that night with Dawn... I knew then that you were gone..." By this time Tara was in tears and Willow was shocked. She never would have guessed that Tara would have any guilt over this. It never even entered her mind.

        "Tara I'm so sorry. Please look at me. This was not your fault. Me going after Glory with magic was my decision. The power I invoked was my choice. You didn't fail me. I betrayed you. I did those things because I didn't know how to be me anymore. One minute I'm this geek in high school that people come to when they need their computer fixed. I was convenient. And then, suddenly, I'm this cool monster fighter. People needed me. I was special. I could protect people, I could protect you. Then Buffy is back and I'm not needed anymore. I couldn't go back to being that girl... it was like being taken to the top of a mountain to see this beautiful, perfect place in its valley, then being told, 'that's what you can't have.' The first thing you told me that day in the school lounge was that I was special. But Tara, if I hadn't been a Wicca girl, what could I have offered you? You asked me to stop using magic, and I felt like if I did that I wouldn't have anything to offer you. Just some girl... that's all."

        "You were never just ‘some girl’ to me. And it was never because of the magic. That 'just some girl' you're talking about, that was me. I was just some girl. I couldn't even put a sentence together without getting flustered. And then you came into my life and you smiled at me. And for the longest time I had to check over my shoulder to make sure it was me you were smiling at. But then I didn't have to do that anymore because I believed in the love I saw in your eyes when you smiled at me... it made me love myself, I was finally able to say to myself, I'm okay. But it was never the magic. The only reason it mattered to me that much was because I thought that I would have something to offer you. What you meant to me, what you mean to me has nothing to do with magic, it never did.”

        "How do things get so messed up like this? All these insecurities just snuck up on us. It's like they became bigger than the both of us." Willow felt so angry. She just hated that she let these insignificant things get in the way of her life. She loved Tara, and Tara loved her. That's all that should have mattered. Why did she lose hold of that? Tara answered.

        "They say you can never love someone if you don't love yourself first..." Willow got nervous when she heard Tara say that.

        "Tara, I always loved you, please don't doubt that. With all that I am and ever was I loved you."

        "I know, Willow... it's just, how do we know this won't happen again?" Willow didn't want to smile but she felt her heart start to sing again. Tara was hinting, it seemed, that they were going to give it another chance. This was it. Her moment to prove it, to show the women she loved she was ready.

        "It won't. These six months, as much as it was hell, they actually did me some good. A lot of good. I realized that when you are in love with someone, you have to be able to believe them when they tell you they love you. And the only way to make that happen, to truly make that happen, is to love yourself. You are my soul mate, Tara. I always believed that you completed me. But I realize now that I wasn't looking at it the right way. I thought we were like two halves of a puzzle and together we completed this beautiful picture. But I forgot that if you want to connect those two halves together you have to make sure that each side is complete on it's own. Otherwise they won't fit together, there won't be a strong enough connection and eventually something will pull them apart. My side of the puzzle wasn't complete. I didn't love myself enough and I was missing some pieces. That's why we got pulled apart. But I know that now. I learned that and have been working on that ever since. I know what it means now to say I love you."

        Tara was smiling. She knew now that Willow had really changed. She felt something stir inside herself. Something that had been dormant for a long time. She wanted to tell Willow how happy it made her to hear that. But she couldn't find the words and a part of her wanted to hold a little back. There was still a strong part of her that kept her defenses up. Tears started to pour down her face, and for the first time in a long time they were tears of joy. Willow could see that they had reached a point. Willow couldn't help it. She needed to be near Tara. She started to move closer and by impulse lifted her hand to wipe away some of the tears. Then she felt Tara lean into the touch and she opened her palm to cup her cheek. Tara opened her eyes and met Willow’s stare. Slowly they moved to one another, and suddenly they were wrapped up in each other’s embrace. They held on to each other like it was the first time, knowing it wouldn't be the last. They sobbed together, weeping for the destination they had reached. They cried for the pain they felt, the innocence they had lost, and the hope they felt starting to breathe again in their hearts. They cried for the restitution, absolution, and resolution that had finally come. They had found each other, and they were home.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After what felt like forever they separated and sniffled their way back to coherency.
        "Willow, this has to go slow. We need to take this one day at a time. What happened between us... I can't just forget. I need time."
        "Tara, the fact that there is a 'we' to go slow is all that matters to me right now."
        "Why don't we get used to being around each other as friends. And see how things go from there." Willow was a little disappointed when she heard the word friends but knew that it was the right move. They needed to ease into this. Although, right now all she wanted to ease into was Tara's embrace.
        "That's probably best. We started out friends. It's like it's full circle, you know."
        "Yeah, it is."
        "So as a friend can I take you out for some coffee or something?" Willow wavered as she spoke those words, hoping she didn't ask too much, too soon.
        "That sounds really nice." Tara thought some fresh air would do them some good. Besides, they had to get used to just normal interaction again.
"Really? Great! Let's get some mocha goodness." And there it was, that playful banter that Tara missed so much. They headed out the door, and worked their way out of the building trying to get back into the swing of everyday conversation.
As they exited the building they didn't realize they were being watched. In the alley of the apartment building, a man stood peering, as they walked away from his perspective. He rubbed his hands together and as he did, electric sparks started to shoot out.
"So that's where Strawberry has been sowing her seeds. Hmm... looks like I get two for the price of one." His menace filled laugh could be heard in echoes as walked away.
Rack was back.
Chapter Five
Willow tried to keep her hands steady as she walked back from the Espresso Pump counter so as to avoid a potentially humiliating situation. They both managed to make it to the coffee house with reasonably normal interaction. Although Willow knew that there were still many things left to talk about, she was confident that the worst part was over. They had hit the ground running, albeit with a rocky start. But they were started, and that was what mattered. Although, at this point, they were working on the friendship part first. Willow had a feeling this was going to be a challenge for her. Just seeing Tara right now, sitting at the table, playing with a straw wrapper, twisting it around her fingers... all she wanted was to take Tara's hands and entwine them with her own.
It was very hard to separate the emotional attachment from the physical attachment. Not that all Willow could think about was the private smoochie times (not all the time at least). It was that her relationship with Tara was so intense that at some moments words weren't enough. So they would cling to each other, and somehow all that needed to be said was said through touch. A caress of a cheek, a tickling of fingertips, the warm feeling when falling back into an embrace. She really missed that now. She didn't want to cross the line too soon, but it was taking all the willpower she had not to reach out for Tara in instinct.
'Just calm down, Willow. Youve got a chance here to have Tara in your life as a friend. Don't mess that up by taking one too many trips down smoochie memory lane. Just listen and talk, talk and listen. You have lots to talk about.' Willow smiled as she reached the table where Tara was waiting for her. She carefully placed the drinks down on the table and took a seat.
"Sorry it took so long, seems like it's prime time for caffeine consumption."
"Yeah, well, it's midterm time... people are looking for any reason to go outside and take a break."
"They should, it's beautiful out. It'd be a shame to miss it."
"Yeah... do you wanna... " Tara started to gesture out the window. She thought maybe that Willow was hinting that they should go outside. Willow scrunched her brow in confusion and then responded,
"Oh! I no, I mean, I didn't mean we would... not that that would be bad, of course, it wouldn't be bad, I just thought, ya know, sun shining, blue skies... ahh"
"It's okay Willow, why don't we go outside. I've been stuck inside all day anyway. Some fresh air would be good." They both rose from their seats and headed out into the sunlight. They just started to walk down the street heading for the park. It was a bit of an awkward situation. It seemed like Spring fever was in full effect; couples were cornered off in sections of the green landscape just enjoying the pleasure of each others intimate company. The last time they walked on this ground, Tara was sweetly serenading Willow. It was hard not to think about that. But in truth, this type of nostalgic situation was going to present itself quite often. They had a lot of beautiful memories together. Tara broke the silence.
"Are you thinking about it?"
"What?" Willow was sure of the question, but was trying to divert it.
"The last time we were here." Willow was fiddling with the cover of her coffee, avoiding eye contact.
"Oh that... kinda hard not to I guess..." Tara looked at Willow and saw the discomfort evident in her fidgeting.
"We can't move forward, Willow, if we don't talk about these things... even though..." Willow took in a deep breath of air and then looked Tara in the eyes.
"I know, sorry about the avoidy... I just... it's hard."
"And it always will be if we don't face it."
"I was thinking about how that day was the beginning of the end kinda... for a lot of things... ya know?"
"I guess, but one could say it started before that." Tara decided to take a seat on the grass by the pond. She brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them as she stared at the water's surface. Willow looked down at Tara and moved to sit beside her, leaving a respectable, but modest space between them. She picked up a pebble and tossed it at the water, being momentarily mesmerized by the ripple effect it caused, then she replied.
"One could say that, but that one would be someone who is a bit wiser than I am. I meant that, for me, after that day, I realized how far in I was."
"But Willow if you knew, then why..."
"I knew but... when you have that kind of power it's easy to convince yourself that you're doing what youre doing for good reasons, even if when the doing was done it didn't turn out like you expected... if that makes any sense."
"No it does... weren't you scared?" Tara twisted her body so she was facing Willow. She knew that the questions she would be asking were going to put Willow on the spot. It was a necessary process, but she didn't want Willow to think she had to go through it alone.
"It was all so fast. Everything was happening in a haze. When I did that... when I did that forget spell on you and Buffy, it was so instinctual. It didn't even faze me until it was too late. After it was over... when we were in the sewer and your eyes went from looking at me with passion to looking at me with disgust and anger... I felt so ashamed. Then you left... and I stopped feeling anything at all." Willow wiped a tear that was trickling down her cheek finding it amazing that she had any tears left at all.
"Is that why you went to Rack... why you let him do?"
"Yes." Willow's face was stone cold, and Tara could sense her pulling her emotions away.
"Willow, I know that t-this isn't easy... especially this part... but I need to hear it, and you need to say it." Willow blinked, and realized how she almost let herself shut down. She had to say this, she had to fight this fear, otherwise it would always be hovering over her. She turned her head and met Tara's gaze. And like a star shining in the black night there it was, the love she thought she lost forever, the love she thought she would never feel again. It was staring right back at her in two beautiful pools of blue, waiting patiently.
"Oh God, Tara... I just wanted to feel again! I was so empty. I wanted to feel anything... this heart in my chest just felt like an anchor. It was cold and solid, nothing could come in and nothing could come out. But when I did magic, I got this rush, and it was almost like I could feel again. When Amy told me about Rack, I wasn't really sure what I was getting into... but I needed something. And then I got there and he... he..."
Tara sensed that this was Willow's moment of truth, so she reached out with her hand to touch Willow's balled up fist. But the moment she made contact she felt Willow freeze. Willow jumped up and back from the contact. She stared down at Tara shaking her head.
"Don't! You can't! I'm dirty Tara, I'm so dirty. I let him inside... I let him take whatever he wanted! I tried so hard to wash him off. I hated that... but I couldn't stop. I needed more... I needed anything..." She was in tears, her words had come out in heaves and sobs. Then she turned and started to run away. Tara raced to meet her and stop her retreat.
"Willow listen to me."
"No, I can't. I don't deserve..."
"Listen to me, Willow. Listen to me, please baby." Tara grabbed Willow by the shoulders, but it was the term of endearment that caught the attention of the unstable red head. When Willow met Tara's eyes the blonde spoke.
"He can't hurt you now, Willow. He's gone, but if you don't face this part of your past it will always be there. He can't take anything from you Willow... because you belong to me. If he wants anything of you he's going to have to go through me, and I won't let that happen. He hurt you because you didn't care enough about yourself then to stop him. But it's not like that now, and it won't ever be like that again, not while I'm here. I love you, Willow. No matter what power he has, none of it is stronger than that." Willow was overwhelmed and she was speechless. Here was the woman that she had betrayed telling her that she wouldn't let anything harm her. All she wanted was to fall into Tara and never come out.
"Tara..." It was a silent plea and Tara accepted. She took Willow in her arms and wrapped her in a tight embrace. She pulled her tight with an arm around her waist and comforted her with soothing strokes of her hand down the length of Willow's hair.
"I can't take away the memories of him for you Willow... but I can give you better memories, ones that outshine anything else in your past. I can promise you that." Willow couldn't say anything, so she just held on as tight as possible, hoping that her feelings would come through in the intensity of her touch.
As the moment drifted on, Willow felt herself come back into one piece. She reluctantly pulled back from the embrace, but kept her hands on Tara's shoulders. She looked at Tara face to face and then spoke.
"It's not supposed to be this way, ya know. I'm supposed to be nursing your wounds. The ones I caused. Sorry... I didn't mean to..." Willow withdrew her arms motioning the placement their bodies.
"Don't ever be sorry for being honest with me. Besides I'm not sure there is a strict set of rules on how this works. We're both hurting."
"I just thought I would let you get some of your stuff out first."
"But for me to heal I need to understand what you went through, so I need to hear from you what was going on inside. It's the only way I can come to terms with it."
"Then I'll tell you everything I can. Even if it does turn me into a blubbering idiot." Willow tried to lighten the mood.
"You know I would never think that of you."
"I know, I'm just trying to get my bearings back." Tara looked at Willow trying to gauge the actions of the distraught girl. She didn't want Willow to avoid the feelings she was feeling. She wanted to make sure her attempt at humor wasn't evidence of that.
"Willow, this is gonna be hard. We're gonna go through this a lot... we'll take it one step at a time, but it won't work if the walls go back up right after we've broken through them." Willow shook her head in agreement.
"They won't... baby steps, right?" Willow offered Tara, promising her that, with her words and with a smile.
"Yeah, baby steps." Tara offered her a comforting smile in return. Then Willow looked at her watch. Tara questioned if everything was okay.
"Do you have to go?"
"Well, its just that on Tuesdays I kinda have this volunteering thingy at five."
"Oh, what time is it?
"It's 4:30. I work at this halfway house for kids with addiction problems. A counselor at school suggested it for me. I kinda left out the whole specific magic-addiction, cause, ya know, he might have thought I was a little crazy. He said it's a good way to face your own problems and give advice to others going through the same thing. It's been kinda nice actually." Tara was really impressed and proud. Willow was really doing so much on her own.
"Wow, that's really great, Will. I'm proud of you." Willow got a tickly feeling in her stomach hearing Tara call her 'Will'. They both started walking to the exit of the park, sharing a feeling of loss that their time together was coming to an end.
"I actually have to meet Dawnie today, anyway. She wants to see the heart throb of the week teen movie. I honestly can't keep up with all these adolescent studs she moons over." Willow giggled. They ended up walking back to the Summer's house. When they got there, they saw Dawn sitting on the stoop. Her face lit up when she saw the two girls walking together toward her.
"Hey guys... everything kosher?" Tara smiled at the teenager and replied,
"One day at a time, Dawnie. But it was a good day." Dawn was expecting Tara at that time, but she wasn't expecting Willow to be with her. She bubbled with excitement at the thought of being able to spend the evening with both of them.
"Are you coming to the movie with us too, Willow?"
"Oh no, Dawnie, I just came home to drop off my stuff before heading out to the halfway house."
"Right, I forgot that was Tuesdays. But you could meet us for dinner? Tara's place is right next to a diner so we usually head there after the movie. She could meet us there, couldn't she, Tara?" She looked at Tara with puppy dog eyes hoping to get the witch to cave.
"Well it sounds nice to me, Dawn, but that's really not up to me." Tara shifted her attention to Willow, and Dawn redirected her puppy dog gaze to the same place.
"Yeah, that sounds great. You sure I won't be like, intrudey gal?" She directed her attention towards Tara, since it was her approval that she was most seeking. Tara started to affirmatively nod her head in agreement.
"It's fine by me really. Were gonna try to catch a matinee at around 5:00, so how about 7:30? Do you know the diner?"
"Yeah, I noticed on my way over to your place. 7:30 would be superb. So, I guess I'll see you guys there." Willow looked at Tara, and Tara returned the gaze. They both felt like so much had happened in their short time together that day. It was hard to know how to walk away. Willow opted for the less ground-breaking move of a waving goodbye, even though her heart was screaming for her to wrap her arms around Tara and never let her go. They parted ways, heading to their respective locations, both smiling, thinking of the moments still to come.
The three girls had spend their evening in the diner with good food, conversation and company. Dawn sat in the crescent booth in between the two older girls. Presently, they were debating the quality of present day teen flicks and the classic John Hughes flicks of the eighties. Dawn felt she was outmatched since she was facing two to one odds.
"Look, all I have to say is that if I have to see one more Freddie Prinze, Jr. movie, I might just go over the edge." Willow rolled her eyes to emphasize her disdain for the actor.
"Hey, She's All That was a quality film. Come on, they were totally cute together!" Dawn was practically squealing when she stressed her words. Tara decided to put her two cents in.
"You know, I have to agree with Dawn, it was good a storyline. Although, I think I liked it better the first time around when it was called Pretty in Pink."
"Ha! Thank you, Tara." Willow stuck her tongue out at Dawn to highlight her triumph. Tara laughed at the maturity level Willow reduced herself to whenever she debated with the teenager. She always felt like the mother hen between the two of them.
"Now, now, children, play nice. We should probably get going. You have school tomorrow and I promised Buffy I would have you back on time." They settled the bill then headed out of the diner. Willow offered her thanks for being invited.
"Thank you guys, for letting me tag along. I had oodles of fun."
Dawn tugged at Tara's arm and questioned, "Tara, we can do this again sometime, can't we? You know, the three of us?" Tara looked to Dawn, then to Willow, suddenly feeling like a spotlight was shining on her.
"Sure, we'll work it out okay. I guess I should head home. You guys be careful walking home." Dawn 'pfted at her request.
"No prob, we're professional scoobies. Our reputation is known far and wide... and Buffy lent me her Mr. Pointy."
"I'll talk to you soon Tara?" It was more of question then a statement for Willow.
"Absolutely. Ill call you." Tara smiled, but tried to restrain her enthusiasm in front of Dawn. She didn't want the girl to interpret her excitement too much. She offered a little wave, and then headed in the direction of her building. Willow still had her hand raised in a waving motion as Tara turned the corner away from them. Dawn looked at Willow and smiled.
"Good day, huh!"
"Yeah Dawnie, it was good day. But look, Tara and I, we have a lot of stuff to work out. I don't want you to think things are just gonna go back to how they were. It takes time, just like it took time for me and you, remember?" Willow placed her hand on Dawn's shoulder and squeezed it for encouragement.
"I know, it's just nice to see you're working on things at all. Bet you're glad I invited her to the party now, aren't cha?"
"Don't get all high and mighty with me now, okay. Let's just say it's turning out pretty good."
"Fine. I'll settle for that. But I want full credit when you guys are getting with the smoochies!"
"Dawn!"
The two girls walked and chatted about their day. As they hit the end of the street, Willow got a feeling that they were being followed. She turned her head to see behind her, but nothing was there. As they continued to walk, the feeling grew stronger until it she recognized the feeling all too well. It was a feeling she had been trying to forget for months. She put her arm around Dawn, and then whispered in her ear.
"Dawn, when I push you, I want you to run as fast as you can to the house and get Buffy. Get her here fast. Don't turn around, just go."
"But what I don't"
"Just do it, Dawn!" Dawn nodded in compliance and waited for her signal. Willow pushed Dawn and she took off with all the speed her legs could provide. Willow stood her ground, and awaited the voice that until now, had been just a voice of her past.
"Miss me, Strawberry? It's a good thing your friend ran off. I think we need some private time to catch up."
Willow felt her sense come alive. Her body tensed as she turned to face her aggressor.
"Rack."
This was bad. Very bad.
Leave a Light On
Chapter 6
She was running. She had to get home. She had to get to Buffy. Not a moment too soon was she on the steps of her house, bounding into the living room looking for her superhero sister.
"Buffy! Buffy! Help, Willow's in trouble." She ran from room to room, checked every possible corner to find her sister.
"Oh no, Buffy please..." She finally came to the conclusion that her sister was nowhere to be found. 'Okay, think, Dawn, Willow needs help... Call Xander, find out if he knows where Buffy is... Should I call Tara first... definitely call Tara.’
She picked up the phone and managed to dial the number despite her fumbling nervous fingers. As soon as she heard Tara's voice on the other end she went into overdrive.
"Tara, you have to help Willow, she's in trouble, that guy is there, the witch guy that hurt her before. She was really scared, she's all alone and I can't find Buffy..." Tara couldn't really get all the teenager was saying, but she heard the vital parts... Willow and trouble.
"Dawn, please sweetie, calm down and tell me where she is."
"She's on Foster St., near the alley. Tara... it's Rack."
Tara heard those words and her heart stopped. "Dawn, I want you to stay at the house, call Xander and see if he knows where Buffy is. I’ve got to get to Willow. Please promise you'll stay in the house."
Dawn wanted to contest, but she knew deep down that it was best if she stayed where it was safe.
"Okay... I will." Then she heard the line go dead, and she knew Tara must have fled out the door. All Dawn could hope was that Tara wouldn't be too late.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tara was acting on instinct. Her feet were moving at a speed she didn't know she could achieve. But the thoughts passing through her mind were working at an equally shocking rate. 'Why now... I won't lose her... I won't lose her. She'll be okay... she has to be okay... Stay strong Willow, I'm coming...'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Willow was trying not to show her emotion. Inside she was falling apart. She was afraid, she was angry, she was confused... she was lost. At her sides, her hands were balled into fists full of tension. She was looking Rack right in the eyes, waiting for him to make his next move.
"You know, we were just getting to know each other really well... then you left. That's bad manners, Strawberry. You owe me." Rack started to move a step closer to Willow with every word he spoke. Willow stood her ground.
"I don't owe you a thing, I gave you more than enough." He was close now, only a few steps separating them. But still Willow remained strong. She wasn't going to back down. It could all end here. Everything she talked about, thought about... it could all come down to this moment. 'Are you ready Willow? You say you're done with magic... now you can prove it.'
"You can't fool me, Strawberry. I know your blood, I swam in it. I know it's boiling now... it can feel the power... it wants the power."
Willow now took the aggressive stance by stepping up to Rack. "You're wrong... things change. What I want... what I need... you could never understand. You're wasting your time. I'm done with your games."
Rack looked at Willow from top to bottom. Something was different about her... but it didn't matter. She would give him what he wanted.
"What are you gonna do? I win either way. You cast a spell, and you’re mine. You don't cast a spell, and you're still mine." He was laughing now, stalking around her body like a predator.
Willow knew that Rack needed her to cast in order to feed off her source. It was how he got powerful. But eventually, Rack would feed off her to the point where she was empty... she knew this because it almost happened before. On the other hand, the only magic powerful enough to save her from whatever lengths he was willing to go to was dark magic.
It was in that moment that she finally understood. It came to her like lightening. It wasn't about life or death... it was about right and wrong, love and hate. That was what she lost sight of before. But she could see it now... and it was beautiful. There wasn't any fear, not now… not this time. She had love in her heart... she trusted that love. It was all that mattered. She knew love now, she knew what it meant now. She had been here before... this moment of darkness before the dawn. But this time, this time, she knew what light was waiting for her if she could just hold on, if she could just trust in that, believe in that. She wasn't afraid. She was smiling.
"Rack, just go. The girl you're looking for, she doesn't live here anymore."
"Oh, wow. Now that is deep, Strawberry. Guess I'll just have to take what I want. Too bad though, it's not as fun this way." Rack lifted his palm and rays of red light started to spark out from it. He stretched out his arm, lowering it to the red head’s chest.
Willow stared him straight in the eye. She didn't blink, didn't move, and didn’t falter. Her thoughts were of Tara, of her love. She then closed her eyes, trying to imagine her love's eyes, those pools of blue she would drown herself in. This would be her final thought. No thoughts of regret, of anger, of fear or doubt. Nothing but the love she had in her heart, her love made flesh in the form of Tara. Then the energy hit her and her thoughts were gone...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tara was running around the corner when she saw it. Willow was levitating in the sky. A ball of red, electric energy encompassed her body. Rack was killing her... and Willow was letting him. 'No, not again. I made a promise.' She chanted the necessary words and a ball of white light appeared above her out stretched open palm.

"Dissolvo!" And with the final incantation the energy was thrown directly at Rack. The warlock was caught off guard. It was a direct hit and he fell to the ground, and Willow dropped from the sky with him. Tara ran to Willow. The girl wasn't moving, but she was still breathing. She looked over to where Rack was and saw that the man was beginning to stir. Immediately she recited a prayer to protect her and her love.

"Diana, we pray, may your tears cover us. Cloak us from darkness, and fill us with light."

Tara had to remain focused. This was the difference between Wicca and dark magic. Wicca was a symbiotic relationship. You asked the powers of nature for assistance. Their compliance depended on your request and on the purity of your mind. You had to have complete focus and clarity. If not, then your requests would never be heard. Dark magic relied on force, you ordered the powers of nature to do your bidding. That was why the consequences were so high. Nothing likes to bossed around, especially not Mother Nature. So here she was, with her lover’s limp body in her arms, trying to keep a clear mind. She had to keep out all the fear and anger if she wanted to keep their shield up. Rack wasn't about to give up that easily.

"Well, well, well. So you're Strawberry's playmate. I can see why she picked you. So pure, so fresh... and the power. Do you really think chanting is gonna save you? Do you think this little bubble is gonna save you, Blue Eyes?"

Tara was fighting, but the way he called her 'Blue Eyes'... she hadn't been called that since...

"I knew you reminded me of someone. She was my first, you know, as pure as the white snow. You have her eyes. I used to watch her... boy did she love you. She died for you, did you know that?”

"I gave her a choice, she could either give me her source, or I would drain her slowly from afar until there was nothing left. But I told her I would make a deal. I saw the power you had, even when you were just a little girl. It was pure, natural energy. Do you realize how rare that is, to have that much power without having cast one spell? A source like yours, if it could be turned, would be unlike anything. She was a powerful woman, so beautiful. But she was stubborn, too, must have been that maternal instinct. She wouldn't give you up, and she wouldn't turn to black magic, so I had to take what I could. Be a shame to come all that way and not get anything. All she had to do was cast one black spell and the draining would stop. But she wouldn't turn. I killed her a little more each day.”

"What did the doctors tell you? Cancer? A new rare disease? I thought once she was dead you would be an easy prey, Blue Eyes. But then your source disappeared... all that energy was clouded over."

Tara was shaking. She was trying to keep the barrier up, but her concentration was fading. Rack killed her mother? It couldn't be true... her mother never said anything... the doctors said it was cancer. No, he was lying. But how did he know all of that? How did he know 'Blue Eyes'? She never told anyone about that. Oh God, this couldn't be true. Tears were falling down her face.

"Oh don't cry, Blue Eyes. Your momma didn't cry... she didn't even scream. She knew what I took from her every day, and she didn't even put up a fight. Kinda like your girlfriend here. Guess people aren't too lucky around you, they keep dropping like flies." Rack was getting close to the couple now. He moved slowly, but steadily, advancing on the fallen Wiccans. Tara was losing control, she could feel the barrier coming down as her emotions took over. Finally the barrier came down and Rack broke through.

"Don't worry, Blue Eyes, this will only hurt for a second. After that you won't feel anything at all, I promise." Just as he stepped through, Tara felt Willow stir in her arms. The red head's eyes started to flutter open and Tara looked straight into them. It was then that she felt the energy inside begin to burn. It wasn't gonna end like this. She made a promise. Tara looked in Willow's eyes and then clasped her hand with the other girl. She turned her face upward to look at Rack, and with all the power she had inside her, responded.

"NO!" And with that exclamation from Tara, Rack went flying, and hit the wall of the brick building across the street. It wouldn't be enough, she knew that, but she was going to fight back. Tara was going to fight back the right way. As she gathered Willow up from the ground like a rag doll, she saw an image jump out from the shadows. It was Buffy.

"Tara, stay back. Spike, help her with Willow." The bleached vamp took his order, and made his way over to Tara. Buffy stood her ground at the fallen warlock’s feet.

"Wanna try your little light shows with me?" Rack stood up and brushed the debris off his clothes. He smiled at the slayer. "I'll show you more than that little girl."

Tara saw the look in Rack's eyes and instantly knew they were in trouble. She called to Buffy telepathically. "Buffy, knock him out while he's weak, he can control demons with his mind. There'll be an army here in minutes." Buffy looked at Tara confused and then turned back to face Rack. She drew back her arm and with all the force she could muster aimed it right at his face. The warlock fell to the ground.

Buffy turned to Tara. "What the hell is going on? I thought he was just a warlock. Since when do naughty witches control demons?"

Tara was holding half of Willow with Spike supporting the other half. "Witches and Warlocks... if they take enough power from other witches... they become something else, an immortal. They have control over everything... the air, the water, the earth, fire, all living things including demons. He must have taken enough from Willow..."

Buffy moved closer to her unconscious best friend. "Is she gonna be okay?"

"I just need to get her home. I don't... I just need to get her home." Buffy nodded. There was obviously a lot they needed to figure out. They started to walk back.

Buffy questioned Spike. "Have you ever heard of anything like this."

"Not very common, but it can happen. Most of the time the warlocks that try to become immortal end up in a bloody pile of ashes. They burn up from all the energy they have inside them. It's tricky business."

This obviously wasn't good. Having a crazed warlock that can do Jedi mind tricks with demons wasn't good. She looked over to Tara and saw that the girl was ready to break down.

"Tara? You okay?"

Tara looked toward Buffy and Spike, and then she rested her eyes on Willow. "Rack said something to me... h-he t-told me... Buffy, I just need to get Willow safe, then I’ll tell you everything. Please… I just..."

Buffy squeezed the blondes shoulder trying to offer comfort. "It's okay, she's gonna be fine. We'll work this out, I promise."

        Tara nodded her head in agreement. They continued to walk in silence until they reached the Summers’ house. Tara tried not to think about all the things that Rack said to her. She couldn't think about them. If she did, she would lose it, and then she wouldn't be able to help Willow. She just needed to take care of Willow first, and then she could think about... everything else. She tried to quiet her mind.

'Just breathe Tara. This is only the beginning.'

Leave A Light On

Chapter 7

The room hadn't changed much. After six months everything seemed just like it was before. But the feeling was different. It didn't feel how it used to when she once lived here. It was almost like she was in a museum or something, like the room had been preserved, but had been without life for a long time. She knew the history of every object in the room, and if someone asked her to, she could attach a story to every inch of the room. The lamp that was bought at a flea market when she and the redhead were on a romantic getaway. It really was an ugly lamp, but they agreed that it had character. It was something they could place in their room and honestly say that no one else on the planet had such a lamp in their bedroom. It was theirs, uniquely theirs, and that made it beautiful.

        But she didn't really have time to muddle over the little anxieties that this setting thrust upon her. She was in a chair, her head resting on the palm of her hand, watching over the depleted body of her former lover. Willow hadn't regained consciousness since they were in the alley. She hardly moved the whole time that Tara vigilantly watched over the girl. Tara sat there as if in meditation. She sat there with such focus, believing that if she wanted it bad enough she could make the girl open her eyes. But it had been a while now and her eyes were strained from focusing so hard on the silent occupant in the bed. The moonlight filtering into the room was the only source of light. The tick-tock of the grandfather clock which was usually viewed as a frustrating interruption was now a welcomed steady rhythmic sound that broke up the deafening silence of the dark room. Suddenly Tara was dragged out of her thoughts by the sound of light tapping on the bedroom door.

        "Come in." Tara squinted as the light from the hallway hit her eyes. She looked up to see Buffy waiting by the door.

        "Any change?" Buffy moved into the room to look over the sleeping body of her best friend.

        "If you consider lack of movement or consciousness as change then, yes, plenty of change." Tara didn't mean her words to have such a acidic tone to them, but the events and revelations of the past day had left her without much courtesy. But she did regret taking her frustration out on Buffy. "I'm sorry, I just... it's all so much." Buffy kneeled down by the feet of the blonde huddled in the chair.

        "You don't owe me any apologies. I know what you're going through... too well. I was thinking if you're up to it you could come downstairs. The gang is here... we're trying to figure out what happens next. Anya seems to know a lot about this stuff. It might..."

        "I can't leave her Buffy."

        "Tara, you're exhausted. You haven't eaten, you haven't slept. You won't be any good to Willow or any of us if you aren't strong for yourself first. We need your help on this... besides, I have a feeling that if anything changes with Willow you'll know it, you'll feel it." Buffy placed her right hand on Tara's left and squeezed it in encouragement. Tara returned the action and gave the girl a nod.

        "Okay... there's s-something I need to tell you guys, too."

        "Well, the scoobies are waiting with sugary provisions that would make dentists across the nation gasp in shock." They both got up and headed down the stairs into the living room. Tara saw Xander and Anya sitting down on the couch, and Spike lounging on the love seat. Xander and Anya got up when they saw Tara.

        "Hey Tara, An and I brought some super caffienated coffees... thought you could use the artificial lift." Tara smiled in gratitude but was suddenly caught off guard as Anya rushed toward her and wrapped her in an embrace. Tara patted Anya's back to show her thanks.

        "I find that physical displays of affection are very helpful in times of crisis. Strictly platonic though. ‘Cause, ya know, mine and Xander's are a bit more involved." Tara laughed on the inside. You could always count on Anya to lighten the mood.

        "No worries blondie, we're gonna give this glamorized sage peddler a taste of what he's pushing." Spike really didn't like Rack. Even before he became a semi-member of the Scooby gang the guy got under his skin. He would take all the local drifters on the street and get them hooked. After meeting with him they were so strung out their blood wasn't even worth draining. He should've took him out when he had the chance. Tara nodded at Spike in appreciation. It had been a while since she was in a position like this, a situation where the gang rallied behind her.

        "Thank you, guys. So did you figure out anything?" Tara took a seat on the chair and Buffy planted herself as well. Xander decided to answer the open-ended question.

        "Well, Anya was just explaining to us this whole Warlock immortality deal. An…?" Anya had a confused look on her face until she realized that was her cue to fill Tara in on what they figured out.

        "Oh right. Okay, so from what I remember, actual cases of warlocks or witches reaching immortality are pretty small in numbers. It's very hard. You have to get soooo many sources, and the process of gaining another witches source is very dangerous." Tara was very interested since this affected her personally on many levels.

        "How so?" Tara questioned.

        "Oh, well, the human body can only contain so much mystical energy before it goes all like, ka-blooey. It just burns up. Naturally it requires much discipline by the one stealing the source. They have to do it slowly over time, at least at first. Depending on how strong the witch or warlock is it can take a very long time, sometimes months. But there are so many qualifications to even begin the process, I mean it's almost as bad as applying for a small business loan. You know, one minor incident of arson and vandalism and suddenly it's like 'oh sorry your past history blah blah blah', I tell you, sometimes capitalism is a real bite in the..." Xander could tell his fiancé was about to go on a very long tangent.

        "Anya, honey, time's of the essence here, let's try to stay focused, okay?"

        "Right, sorry." Xander patted his girlfriends leg to show his support. Buffy was processing all the information Anya laid down before she got into the 'workers of the world unite' speech. Something puzzled her.

        "Qualifications? And you keep talking about sources, I'm gonna need you to provide a little Webster's Magic Dictionary action on that term." Anya got back in Scooby mode and answered the slayer.

        "As far as qualifications go it's not like any warlock or whatever can just go around stealing mystical sources. And by sources I mean how a witch channels their magic. Every witch, once they become good enough, can perform magic almost instinctually. They don't even need to use old language verses and such. Most spells are written in dead languages because they help the practitioner focus, it helps them disassociate from this plane so they can reach a higher one, or lower one if they are so inclined. But once you've channeled a source, nature's energy is constantly running through you, you can command it with a snap of your fingers." Buffy needed to make an analogy if she was gonna get this concept.

        "So it's like Slayer strength kinda. Like how that one time that demony guy tried to steal it from me."

        "Somewhat. In the sense that it's the center of your power then yes, it is very similar. It's where all their power is drawn from. Some are born with it, like natural wiccas, but others build one as they achieve higher levels of magic."

        "So what qualifications are there to stealing a source then?"

        "The victim witch has to be willing at first. They have to offer themselves to the other witch or warlock. Usually the victim gets involved because of the high they get off of the transference of power. When Rack first starts the process he has to transfer some of his power to the witch he's stealing from, that's where the high comes from. Suddenly these witches get a burst of power way above what they have on their own. By sharing essences they form a mystical bridge so to speak. That's how he can take what he wants. Once the victim gives in that first time they're connected, and he can come and take what he wants, when he wants. " After hearing this Tara gripped the arm rests of her chair. One part of this explanation bothered her.

        "Can he steal a source without the victim allowing him at first?" Anya turned to address Tara's question.

        "It can be done, but it would take such a long time. He would only be able to take snippets at a time, it could take more than a year, and the victim would eventually pick up on it. Once they realized they were being violated the process would end. If you don't get the victim to participate willingly at first then you run a very serious risk. Like I said, when the victim goes willingly at first a mystical bridge is created. That how all that energy passes between the two without a hole being ripped in this dimension. However, if you try to steal a source without that initial compliance, without the bridge being formed, then you could end up incinerating yourself in the process."

        "So if a person didn't willingly engage with Rack at first he could still steal from her. And if she never... if she never protested then over time he could have taken it all from her?" Xander thought that Tara was trying to reason a situation in which Willow didn't willingly offer herself to Rack. But she had to know that Willow did agree to the process initially.

        "Tara, I don't mean to squash your theory but... Rack didn't have to... Willow went to him of her own free will... I know she didn't mean for any of this to happen, but she did set the ball in motion, she went to Rack first." Tara got up from her seat and faced her body away from the group. Her arms cradled her chest and she looked to the floor. She took a breath and tried to keep her voice steady.

        "I wasn't talking about Willow." Everyone started to stare at each other with confused eyes wondering if anyone knew where the blonde Wicca was going with this admission.

        "Then who-" Xander started to question but he was cut off by Tara's quick reply.

        "My mother. Rack drained my mother. I always t-thought it was cancer... but he told me. That's why she was sick for so long. The doctors said that her immune system had just broken down, but it wasn't that. Rack took every bit of energy and power she had inside..." Buffy was super confused. If Tara knew this why didn't she tell them before. Buffy walked up behind Tara.

        "Why didn't you tell us before?"

        "Because I only found out tonight, h-he told me."

        "But Tara he was trying to mess with you... you don't know... he could have-"

        "It's the truth, Buffy. He called me 'Blue Eyes'... he knew that s-she, that s-she..." Tara couldn't go on. It was too much. She could feel the emotions building up like a tidal wave inside her soul She needed to stay focused. She felt the sting of tears forming in her eyes. She turned to face Buffy, needing her to trust her without further explanation. If she went into this anymore she would lose it, and there was a woman upstairs that was counting on her to hold it together.

        "Buffy, I-I can't... please." Buffy grabbed Tara and held her tight in an embrace. She understood what Tara was asking. She remembered a time when Tara opened up to her when she was dealing with the situation of her own mother's death. She wanted the girl to know that she wasn't going through this alone, she didn't have to bear this weight alone, they were all here for her. Even Spike was taking up her cross. Buffy always regretted that at the time she was too involved in her own problems to see the situation brewing between her best friend and Tara. She regretted that Tara had to take a stand alone. She had to leave the house, and Buffy never supported her actions or the reasoning behind them. Buffy knew all those months ago that Willow had a problem with magic. When Tara left she should have taken the time out to realize how serious the situation was to warrant her leaving. Maybe if all the gang stood behind Tara's actions then, Willow would have listened sooner. She had a chance to do right by them, to make up for her past indifference. She wasn't going to fail her friends this time around. She pulled back from the shaking girl, grabbed her by the shoulders and looked her straight in the eyes.

        "Tara, we are gonna set things right. We will make it so that the closest this wanna-be wiccan bad ass comes to touching magic ever again is when he rearranges his spice rack." Tara shook her head in understanding. Buffy looked over at Anya and questioned the ex-demon.

        "Okay, so if this guy took all this stuff from witches, then would I be right in assuming we could take it back? Would that work?"

        "Yes. All his power is just a composite of other wiccan sources. Without them, he's as dangerous as a defanged vampire." Spike didn't appreciate that last comment.

        "Watch it!"

        "Spike, defend your honor some other time. Alright, so that's the plan. We jump into research mode to find out how to give Rack a dose of his own medicine. Tara, you really need rest. Whatever we find is gonna require us to do a spell... but your body is running on empty and that isn't the best condition for you to go into Magic Olympics with Mr. Crack Rack himself."

        "Okay, I should be here for..."

        "You be here for your girl... that's where you're most needed." Tara offered the slayer a half smile in thanks. Buffy was really trying to understand what Tara was going through and the effort wasn't lost on the blonde witch.

        "Thank you." Buffy shook her head and replied,

        "Don't thank me for doing what friends do." Then Xander added to this.

        "For doing what families do... you're family Tara, you always were. I'm sorry if I didn't do what I should’ve before... families are supposed to stick together. We've known Willow longer than you, but when push came to shove, you're the one that did right by her. We owe you for that."

        "Ditto." Buffy seconded that admission. Spike got up to move himself and spoke to move the mushy moment along.

        "Alright, now that we've gotten through this lovely Hallmark moment, can we get moving on the part where we find out how we’re gonna get our sorry asses out of this situation. Although these are wonderful pleasantries something tells me Rack isn't going to be so understanding of our need to waste time with bloody sentimental declarations." Buffy answered

        "Spike's got a point, a rude and harsh point, but a point all the same. The rest of us should head to the magic shop." Everyone gathered their belongings and started to head out the door. Buffy stopped by the stairs where Tara was now standing before she exited the house.

        "If anything happens, just call and we'll be here in a jiffy."

        "I will." They all left the house and Tara was left in silence. She decided to check on Dawn who was sleeping. A peak in the teenager’s room let her know that the girl was resting soundly. Now it was time to get back to Willow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back at the magic shop, the gang was working on a solution to their current dilemma. They were seated at the round table with books piled high. Presently, they were trying to fill in the holes in the explanation Anya had given them at the house.
        "Hold up, Tara told me something about Rack being able to control demons. Now was that just mass hysteria or is our situation that much worse?" Anya was beginning to feel like this was a game of twenty questions.
        "Yes and no. If the bad warlock does eventually reach immortality they have the ability to control demons, actually they can control most living things. But that type of power doesn't last very long. It takes a lot out of them. Tara must have assumed that Rack had reached it already. But you wouldn't have been able to knock him out if he was, that much I can tell you for sure." Xander understood why Rack wanted to achieve this whole immortality thing. The lack of death or dismemberment was motivation enough. But what he didn't understand was why he was so focused on using Willow.
        "But why is he busting his hump trying to drain Willow? Wouldn't it just be easier to go all suckey-source on someone else, someone that isn't best friends with the slayer for example?"
        "You make a valid point honey, but it's not that easy. If Rack is close to becoming immortal then he's gonna need a really powerful witch for his final transference, to set the transformation in motion. It has to be someone close or equal to his strength in magic. When Willow brought you back, Buffy, she entered the gold star room for wiccans. There aren't a lot like her around. And if there are more like her in Sunnydale they most likely are trying not to broadcast it. It makes them a target for all kinds of unpleasant species." Spike grinned.
        "So what monkey-boy here really wants to know is if there's a chance Mr. Hocus Pocus himself is just going to walk away from this should it become too complicated." Xander didn't appreciate the monkey-boy comment.
        "Big words coming from a neutered vamp." Spike didn't want to initiate a useless argument, so he settled the brewing confrontation by flipping his two-fingered salute with his right hand.. Anya stepped in at this point to answer the hanging question.
        "Sorry to burst your bubble but there isn't much chance of Rack going anywhere. Especially now that he knows there are two of them..." With that last comment they dove back into the pile of books covering the table. As they researched, the same thought passed through each of their heads... the hole they were in just got deeper.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tara entered the dark room slowly. She went to the table on the far right of the bed to light a candle. They were surrounded by enough darkness... they didn't need to add to it by sitting in a black room. After she lit the candle she headed back to her chair to once again watch over her fallen soulmate. It was kind of strange. It had only been a week since Willow's birthday, since she the redhead came back into her life. Seven days. Her world was turned upside down in seven days. But it was kind of appropriate if you thought about it. The minute she saw Willow for the first time in the Wicca group her whole world was turned upside down. It was full circle almost.

        Yet here she sat, for a second time, watching her love suffer because of magic. It was different this time though, Willow hadn't invited it in this time. That's what made it so heart breaking. They had come so far in a short time. Well, actually the six months before their reunion was anything but short. But since Willow's birthday so much had happened. Tara had begun to believe again. The heart inside her chest that had laid dormant for so long was beginning to stir, beginning to breathe again. She found herself sitting in her apartment, staring into space, smiling for no apparent reason. She felt good inside. She started to let herself believe that she and Willow had a chance, that they could find each other and end up where they belonged... in each others arms.

        But at this moment she was staring at the woman lying in the bed just praying for some physical movement. A sign that she got to Willow in time... that Rack didn't take enough to... The truth was, and she knew it, that there was a possibility Willow may never wake up. If Rack had had enough time to drain her to the brink of death then what was left of her energy was just enough to keep her breathing, but that's all. But she wouldn't think about that. Right now she was going to believe. Believe that Willow was just really tired and any second she would wake up mumbling about scary dreams with frogs and reach out to Tara to hold and protect her. And Tara would. She would hold onto Willow like it was the first time and the last time all at once. She would onto her as if it was the beginning of forever.

        She knew that she had hoped to keep their foray back into a relationship on a slow and steady pace, but Willow needed her now, and she needed Willow. When their world returned to normal, they would work out the dynamics and logistics of their reunion in greater detail. But it was already known that they had found their way back to each other. They were just taking their time, letting it settle in. But what it came down to was that Tara loved Willow, in sickness, and in health, for better or worse, until death... well, they didn't need to think about that last part. She knew, but more importantly, she felt that Willow loved her just the same. So she would wait. She would wait forever if that's what it took until her love opened those beautiful green eyes and came back to her.

        Rack. He wasn't going to win. Not this time. He stole the only love she knew from her earliest years in this world, and he threatened to take the greatest love she would ever know. Her poor mother... to think of the pain... why didn't she tell her? She was too good, her mother, she tried to carry this burden alone and it ended up taking all that she was. Tara was trying to hold it together. But she couldn't help but think about the nights when she stood watch over her mother's bed, just like she was now. She would sit on a footstool by the bed, place her arms over her mothers heart, and rested her head sideways on the edge of the bed. Her long white nightgown that was too big for her small stature covered and bunched at the bottom of her feet. She looked like a child guardian angel when the moonlight that streamed through the window shone on her body. She would watch the rising and falling of her mother's chest, the slow and deep breathing that became the final lullaby her mother could give her. Sometimes her mother would wake and call to her 'Blue Eyes'. Tara would hop onto the bed and rest her head on her mother's stomach. Her mother would play with the tendrils of her hair, and if she was lucky the soothing effect would draw her into sleep. Tara shook her head, trying to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall.

        It was a useless fight. And Tara gave up, letting the gravity of the entire situation take over her. The dire state of her lover, the revelation about her mother, the uncertainty of the future that lay ahead. It all hit her like a Mack truck. Her upper body tumbled over onto to the edge of the bed where Willow slept. She buried her face in the sheets of the bed to muffle the cries that were pouring from her chest. Her hands rested on the side of Willow's body, providing the contact that Tara very much needed. She cried until her voice became hoarse, and her vision became blurry. She cried, hoping that somehow, she would come to understand how life could be so cruel, to reveal to her one hidden tragedy of her past on the coat tails of another about to take place. She didn't understand, and she had a feeling she never would. But she was pulled out of her morose thoughts by a stirring of the bed caused by actions other than her own. Then she felt it. The soft, unmistakable fingertips of Willow grazing over the skin of her right hand. Willow was moving... Willow was awake. The silence was broken by the raspy voices of her love.

        "Bet I can turn that frown upside down for you, love." Willow was looking down at the blonde head that was laid out on the bed, blonde hair pillowed out, shining in the moonlight like strands of gold, making her wonder for a second if had died and an angel was watching over her. But it was better than an angel, it was Tara. Upon hearing Willow's voice Tara's head immediately popped up and looked at the redhead with the goofy grin.

        "Oh God, Willow!" She rushed to the reclined witch and smothered her with affection. Willow returned the strong embrace. Then Tara pulled back and cupped Willow's gentle face with her hands. She placed a loving, soft kiss on the girl’s forehead.

        "I was so scared Willow... I saw you up off the ground... there were all these bolts of energy around you. I thought I was too late. He almost stole you from me, too." She gave the girl some space but kept the physical connection by covering the weakened girl’s hands with her own.

        "Never Tara, no matter what happens he will never take me from you. You said 'too'. Oh God, is Dawnie hurt, did he-? Oh no, please..."

        "It's okay Will, Dawn's asleep in her bed. He didn't touch her."

        "Then who..."

        "I found out that… t-that Rack... h-he... look, Willow maybe we should talk about this after all this is over."

        "No deal, Tara, if something is hurting you this much then I need to know about it. Please." She squeezed Tara's hands to show her support. Tara took a deep breath and avoided eye contact with Willow

        "He killed my mom Willow. The doctors thought it was some breakdown of her immune system, but it was him all along. What he did to you tonight, how he sucked the life out of you, your source... that's what he did to her. He did it slowly over time. She wouldn't use dark magic to protect herself so she just wasted away. She was protecting me... and she died for it. It's so hard to believe... I almost lost you both." Willow pulled her hands out from Tara grasp. Tara looked at her in confusion.

        "Willow?" Willow looked down in shame.

        "You must hate me."

        "What? Willow why-"

        "For bringing him into your life... the guy that killed... I deserve what I get from him. I asked for it. But your Mom... she did nothing in this world but love and protect you... I'm so sorry Tara... God, I must disgust you." Tara stood up, she had enough.

        "No!" Willow was nervous, she never saw Tara look or sound so defiant.

        "He doesn't win Willow. I'm not going to let you lay down and make it easy for him. This is not your fault. It stopped being your fault when you left dark magic behind. You are not that girl anymore. He got my mother because she didn't have anyone to turn to. No one could help her. But right now there are four friends at the Magic shop trying to find a way to get rid of Rack. He doesn't win, Willow, not this time. You fight for this, you fight for us. He wants you to feel disgusted, he wants you to feel guilty, because then he has you. But that stops right now. Okay? I need you Willow. Don't give up, not when you've come so far, when we've come so far." Willow was crying, she used whatever strength she had to move over to Tara. She reached out for Tara and Tara met her embrace. Willow spoke softly into the blonde’s ear while holding her close.

        "I'll fight with everything I have in me Tara. I promise." They held onto each other for a while, both needed the close comfort more than they knew. Then Willow pulled back to address Tara face to face.

        "I'll fight Tara, but I won't use magic... I can't go back to that. I can't explain it but I have to beat him some other way... it's the only way I can win. It's the only way that's right." Tara smiled at Willow. Willow really had come full circle. Except this time she would have the knowledge gained from past mistakes. And if it was possible she had a feeling that their love this time around would be even greater.

        "I understand. I'll support whatever you decide. But you have to let me help. I won't let you sacrifice yourself because you won't do magic anymore. The fact that you stood your ground, that even in the face of death you stuck to your promise, means so much to me, Willow. But I don't want the price of your actions to leave me with just a tombstone and memories of the woman I love." Willow nodded her head.

        "I've finally found my way back to you, I'm not going to give that up, not after being so lost." Tara cupped Willow's cheek and responded.

        "If you get lost, all you have to do is follow the light home. I left a light on for you. I'll always leave a light on for you, Willow." Willow placed her hand over the hand Tara had on her cheek.

        "I know. But I'm home now... and I'm never leaving again. All roads lead to you... to home." They smiled at each other. Willow suddenly noticed how tired Tara looked.

        "Tara you look exhausted. Have you eaten... slept?"

        "I was a bit pre-occupied. Things were kinda noisy up here, and here." Tara pointed to her head first, then her heart.

        "Maybe I could help quiet things down a bit... we used to be really good at that together." Tara knew that sleep was very much needed, and the bed looked really inviting. Willow saw the trepidation in Tara's eyes and spoke to calm the girl.

        "Tara, you just spent hours by this bed watching over me like an angel. Let me do the same for you. Please." In response, Tara got up from her chair and walked over to the right side of the bed, the side she always stayed in before. Willow lifted the covers and Tara slid in. It felt wonderful, it felt like heaven, it felt like home. Willow smiled at the girl to her right and then motioned her head in her direction, knowing that the blonde was aching as much as she was to complete the familiar setting. Tara moved without protest. Her head found it's resting spot on Willow's shoulder almost instinctually. Her arm crossed over Willow's torso like second nature, and Willow covered the appendage with her own. Willow's head leaned into Tara's.

        They were safe now. Nothing could touch them, nothing could harm them. They were together, and that was all that mattered.

Chapter 8

        She was in the middle of a glorious dream. She was covered in warmth. The kind of warmth that can only be achieved with the closeness of another body. But it wasn't just any body. It was Tara's. She didn't need to see it, she felt it. She knew every curve, every texture, every inch of her body memorized in her mind. She felt sunlight on her face calling her to a new day. But she wouldn't answer, she couldn't. This was all she ever wanted, all she ever needed. Willow would keep her eyes closed forever if she could stay here. Then she felt the warm body covering her start to stir. 'Don't wake up, let me stay here... please, just let me stay here.'

        Tara was going through a similar state of denial. She felt the warmth too. And for a moment she thought of staying. She could pretend that this was just another morning. Another morning where she was wrapped in the arms of the world, her world... her Willow. But this wasn't just another day, there was much to be done. But it would be so easy to just stay... stay in this perfect moment a little bit longer. 'You can't, Tara. You need to face this, you and Willow both.' Tara reluctantly opened her eyes and saw the red head. There she was, in all her peaceful glory. She was so close… she could just reach out...

        Willow suddenly felt the touch of Tara's fingertips on the surface of her forehead, and shuddered as the touch trailed down the side of her face. The hand was now cupping her cheek and the thumb moved from side to side in a soothing motion. Willow couldn't take it.

        "It has to be a dream," Willow whispered to the ears of the blonde head covering her chest. Tara understood. She knew the disbelief Willow was going through because she was going through the same thing.

        "What's a dream, Will?" Willow opened her eyes at the sound of the deep, and scratchy voice of Tara. She looked into her eyes. Tara had lifted her head off Willow's chest, but her hand still rested on her cheek. Willow lifted her own hand, placed it over Tara right hand that was on her cheek, and answered her question.

        "Tarahand." Tara smiled, the choice of words wasn't lost on her.

        "Not a dream, Willow... just a beginning. We really should get up, though. The gang is still at the shop I think. We should go meet them, see what they dug up."

        "I know... I was just doing the dreamy, avoidy thing. I guess that means we have to move, huh?"

        "Yeah... uh, Willow, did you th-think about how you're gonna face him... without magic?"

        "Actually, I did. It may be a bit of a stretch, but I think I got a plan that can work. I wanna tell you before I tell the Scoobs. Gonna need some supporto action..."

        "You got it, all you need."

        "Thanks." They stared at each other a little bit longer. Just taking all this moment of peace had to offer, basking in the calm before the storm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        At the magic shop the gang was fighting a serious case of droopy eyelids. They were still huddled around the table. Books were lying open in a haphazard manner, and completing the research mission from hell motif were empty paper cups of coffee in the center of the table forming a pyramid. Buffy was flipping through the pages of a dusty text with glazed eyes that made her look as if she were in a trance. Xander had his head tilted back with his right hand holding a paper cup over his mouth, shaking his hand up and down trying to force out whatever was left of the beverage. It was a wasted effort. Xander succumbed to this fact and decided to stick his nose in the cup hoping to sniff any remaining caffeine fumes. Anya looked over at her boyfriend and smacked him.
        "Xander! Focus! And you look like idiot. I won't be Mrs. Idiot. Shake Buffy, she looks like she's possessed."
        "Easy An, I'm running on empty here." He turned to Buffy and decided to give his friend a call back to Earth. "Hey, Buff. You're starting to look all 'Children of the Corn' with that gaze there. That book may burst into flames soon. Maybe you should workout, give your system a kick start."
        "What? Who? Huh? Oh,… sorry. Just phased out for a minute. I think my eyes are gonna fall out from exhaustion."
        "Yeah, we're all in the same boat. Except Spike. He bailed at the first ray of light. Sometimes the fate of bursting into flames from sun exposure has it's benefits."
        "Oh, wow! Sunlight. Light of a new day. We've been at this for a while, huh?" Anya snorted at that comment.
        "That's putting it mildly. This is pointless. The only way you can beat dark magic is with dark magic. Anything else is like stupid party tricks." Anya made it too easy. Buffy took the bait.
        "You mean like pulling rabbits out of a hat?" Buffy smiled and giggled softly. Anya gasped in fear then gave Buffy a murderous look. Her response was filled with venom.
        "DEVIL WOMAN!" Xander placed his arms out to his sides to keep the peace.
        "Okay ladies. Back to your corners. Now An, I understand your frustration, but we have to keep looking... for Willow." Anya roughly picked up a book, slammed it on the table, and started flipping.
        "Fine, but tell 'Beach Blonde Barbie' over there to keep her hippity-hop comments to herself." Xander winced. Barbie comments to Buffy were a big no no. Even the demon baddies out there knew to avoid them if they wanted to keep their insides… well, inside. Buffy jumped up and yelled,
        "THAT'S IT! I'm kicking your ass. Let's go!" Anya jumped up, then pulled Xander up and thrust him in from of her like shield. Just as it seemed like all hell was going to break loose, the familiar sound of the store door bell was heard. All three sets of eyes looked over to the entrance to see Willow, Tara and Dawn staring at them. Willow spoke first.
        "Ah, the Anya/Buffy showdown. You guys must be at the 8 hour mark." Both Dawn and Tara muffled their laughs with their hands. Tara couldn't help but think, ‘Some things never change.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        After the commotion ended they all returned to their respective seats at the table. The girls had brought provisions in the form of coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts. The caffeine jolt and sugary dough combination helped settle the raging frustration boiling in the slayer and the ex-demon. Xander finally broke the steady meaningless chatter going on with a serious insertion.

        "Willow, I hate to be the bearer of bad news,… well, I hate to be the bearer of anything, but we've been searching non-stop. There isn't a spell that can defeat him that isn't dark. We found stuff but if you want to use natural magic against a guy like this you need back up. Practically a mini Wiccan army. You and Tara just aren't going to be enough." Willow put the cup of coffee down that she had in her hand. She looked at the table for a moment and then raised her eyes to look at everyone at the table. Finally her eyes rested on Tara. The girl gave her a reassuring smile. Willow returned the smile, nodded, and replied.

        "I know. That's why I'm not using magic." Buffy looked around wondering if anyone else had any idea what she was talking about.

        "Uh, you gonna give us the footnotes on that creepy comment, or are we left to our own demented imaginations?" Willow shook her head.

        "Okay, this is my idea, first we get Rack to come to us..."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        The group was silent. They didn't know what to make of her plan. Willow was nervous to begin with, but the silence was just multiplying it by ten. Willow had to say something.
        "Look guys, I know it's kinda chock full of the risk but-" Anya let out a big sigh and interrupted.
        "Again, with the mild." Willow looked confused. She’d obviously missed something but continued anyway.
        "I can do this. You have to trust me." Buffy put her hand across the table and covered Willow's.
        "Will, it's not about trust. It's about law of physics adherence. This plan don't got it. Your putting a lot on chance here. Actually, you're putting you on chance. I won't lose you." Xander added to that.
        "I second that. Not down with losing our Will." Tara spoke up in defense of Willow.
        "Look, I know you guys are worried about Willow. I feel it just like you do. But she needs to do this. It's not just about beating Rack." Willow finished for her.
        "It's about beating myself. Look, for too long I left myself be seduced by this power. And it turned me into two different people. One was strong and confident, but it disregarded a lot of important things. The other was kinda the flip side. A little scared, a little low on the confidence, but it was me, it was Willow. After being SuperWillow I convinced myself that Real Willow wasn't worth much. But I came back, I can look in the mirror and say, 'I'm okay.' Rack represents everything I want to leave behind. If I beat him using dark magic, then it will always be there. Every time we get a big bad, or end of the world prophecy, then SuperWillow will just step in and take over, and then it will start all over again. I won't do that again. I survived on this hellmouth for a while before becoming witch, I can survive again. I need to beat him as Real Willow. I believe I can do it, but I can't do it alone. I need you to believe in me too, believe in plain old Willow."
The gang was smiling at Willow. This was her, good old Willow. You could tell Willow was scared and nervous, but she was willing to fight this fight anyway. That was 'good old Willow.' How could they not support that. If she believed, so could they. Xander offered the first words of support.
        "You got us Willow. 100 percent." Xander smiled. Buffy added her feelings.
        "Totally, Will. We'll do this together." Tara put her hand on Willow's shoulder and squeezed it and offered her support.
        "Where you go, I go." Willow covered Tara's hand with her own and squeezed it. Then everyone looked at Anya, waiting on her word. Anya got confused wondering why everyone was looking at here. Then it dawned on her.
        "Oh, yeah. Me too." Buffy decided to throw in a quick question.
        "Okay, I'm just a little unsure about something. If we're not gonna weaken him with magic then how is he gonna be vulnerable?" Willow answered
        "Oh, we get him angry so he uses his strongest magical powers." Buffy squinted her eyes and scrunched her brow. Maybe she just heard it wrong.
        "Guess my ears are going wonky. I thought you just said we make him use his strongest magic on us." She laughed it off, but then noticed no one else was laughing.
        "Getting the feelin' I heard it just fine." Tara jumped in to calm the slayers fears.
        "Buffy, it's okay. That's the key. Anya, when is a witch or warlock most vulnerable?" Anya answered.
        "When they're casting. Think of a castle. It's all locked up and safe. But it's most vulnerable when the gates are opened to let their troops out." Tara finished for the ex-demon.
        "Most heavy warlocks or witches have a kind of invisible shield covering them. But when they cast they can't keep up the shield because otherwise the spell will bounce off it and turn the spell on themselves. So for that moment the spell is coming from them they are completely vulnerable. That's why it can work." That was it. This was their plan, and they were going through with it. Buffy went into slayer mode.
        "Okay then. Xander you get the weapons ready. Anya you get together all the stuff Tara needs to cast her spell to bring Rack to us. I'm gonna go wake up Billy Idol, we're gonna need all the muscle we can get. Dawn you stick with the girls. Willow you need anything from us to get your part done?" Willow shook her head from side to side.
        "Everything I need is at the house. Just a quick trip to Radio Shack to get the projector and I'll be set."
        "Alright. Looks like we're ready to kick some Rack ass. Let's get moving." All the Scoobies started to get their things together. Tara gathered some of the books she needed. Xander gave his fiancé a kiss and started to head out. Dawn stepped by the two girls waiting to follow their lead. Buffy watched this whole process. She realized she left something very important out.
        "Willow, everybody, hold on a sec. I just want to say something. I want you to know how proud I am of you, and I know everyone else feels the same way. What you’re doing, it takes a lot of courage. It's the Real Willow doing it, not the magic. You blow me away." Xander smiled and joined in on the praise.
        "Here! Here! Welcome back, Will." Willow had tears in her eyes. She walked over to her two friends. The original Scooby trio formed a group hug. They held onto each other as if that moment was the culmination of their whole friendship. Six years of friendship; they had come so far. But here they were, together. That said it all. They had their bumps and bruises and hurdles along the way, but they were here. That's all that mattered. Buffy looked up from the embrace and addressed the remaining figures in the group.
        "You guys got something against hugging?" And there they were. All the Scoobies, old and new, together just as they should be. Rack didn't stand a chance. Nothing he had could compete with this. While they were wrapped in the embrace all the gang shared the same thought
        'Just breathe. This is only the beginning.'
Leave A Light On
Chapter 9
The gang was assembled at the Summers’ house. Buffy stood in the center of the living room addressing the gang. Xander and Anya were seated next to each other on the couch. Spike was leaning against the doorway to the room. Willow was seated in a chair and Tara was standing behind her. Dawn was sitting anxiously on the end of her seat next to Willow. Buffy was in the middle of a speech about the specifics of their plan.
"Okay, assuming Rack comes for the bait, he's gonna go straight for the gold, a.k.a. Tara and Willow. He wants what they got, and it's our job to make sure he doesn't get anywhere near them. Problem is that he's not gonna come after us physically, he's gonna use a lot of Witch Fu action on us. Best way to keep him occupied is to move around and keep him on his toes." Xander chipped in.
"That's me, Xander Harris, decoy extraordinaire." Anya encouraged him
"Nobody does it better, honey." Xander smiled at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Willow gave her opinion.
        "The most important thing is that Rack gets pretty heated up. The more he casts and the stronger spells he uses the more vulnerable he is when he uses his final spell to steal my source. That's the key, and he has to be in the McKinley lab in Fulton Hall. That's where I'll be waiting for him." Spike was a bit
"The most important thing is that Rack gets pretty heated up. The more he casts and the stronger spells he uses the more vulnerable he is when he uses his final spell to steal my source. That's the key, and he has to be in the McKinley lab in Fulton Hall. That's where I'll be waiting for him." Spike was a bit apprehensive.
"Well, that's sounds all well and good Red, but here's a thought. What if David Copperfield himself doesn't cast enough." Tara stepped up to defend Willow.
"I'll go after him. He won't pass up a chance to go after me. What ever he tries to use against me will be pretty heavy."
"And who's gonna protect you?"
"I can handle it." Spike huffed at this.
"Yeah, I'm sure-" Tara turned around and faced Spike directly.
"Spike, I Can Handle It!" She stressed each word heavily as she spoke them. Spike saw a fire in the girls eyes. At that moment he felt pity for Rack. He was in for a surprise. Buffy treaded lightly before she spoke.
"Okay... everyone needs to cool their jets. Save it for the show down. Tara and Anya, you have to head to the center square at school to cast the spell to bring Rack to us. We'll be waiting in the wings till he gets there. Willow, you have to get to the lab and set up your... stuff. Dawn is gonna go with you. She'll be safe right?"
"Yes, Buffy. I promise."
"No time like the present then, huh? Let's do this. Xander, Anya, Tara - you guys are with me to the center square. Spike, you take Willow and Dawn to McKinley lab and make sure they get there safe. Then come meet us at the square." Xander picked up the bag filled with slayer toys and took Anya's hand. They headed out the door first. Buffy and Spike followed with Dawn trailing behind. That left Tara and Willow in the house. Willow looked Tara in the eyes.
"Guess this is it, huh? Moment of truth type of thing." Willow's words came out shaky. It was obvious that the girl was feeling very nervous. Tara stepped closer to her. She placed her hand under the girls chin and lifted the head that was drooping towards the floor.
"Willow, it's okay to be scared." Willow gave a half smile.
"That's good because... uh, I'm really scared."
"You can do this Willow. You know that, we all know that."
"Yeah, I keep trying to tell myself that, and then that whole fear factor comes in and all feelings of courage run for the border. I don't wanna mess this up Tara, but it's right there. I can see the whole moment in bright flashing colors, and then my time comes and everything just goes black. I don't like black Tara, black is bad, very bad. In terms of things that are good, black is just soooo not on the list, it's like-" Willow was silenced by Tara's fingertips covering her lips. Tara had to smile. This was her Willow. It was like so many times before. Willow was always ready to do good, but she always had that moment of uncertainty right before the big fight went down.
"Willow, we're gonna do this together. You went through the toughest part alone. But this time we go the rest of the way together. I'll be right there with you. I feel something inside Willow. I feel something I haven't felt in a long time. This is just the beginning. Let's get over this last hurdle, okay. Let's get over this, and then get back to us, back to where we belong." She grabbed Willow in her arms, and Willow held on as hard as she could. She could feel it too. That surge of life, of energy that used to pass between them every time they touched. It was back. Their skin tingled, their hearts raced, their breath deepened. They pulled apart slow. Tara's hands slid up along Willow's back, past her neck, and then cupped her face. Her thumbs grazed the skin under them. Willow moved her hands down Tara's back, coming to rest on the blonde's hips. She looked down at her own hands. She could feel it. She could feel Tara's eyes on her, she could feel the heated breath of the other girl on her neck. It was intoxicating. There was no passion, it was beyond passion. It was love taking physical form. The tightening of stomach muscles, the sweat building on the palms of their hands, their breath becoming heavy and shallow. It was so much more than passion. Willow closed her eyes and then slowly opened them to return Tara's gaze. There was so much love in those eyes. Their faces moved in.
"Tara..." Those were the last words spoken. Lips met lips. They melted into one another. All the emotion, all the fear, all the pain, all the joy came together in that one kiss. Willow pulled Tara in tight, and Tara moved her hand to the back of Willow's neck to force their lips even closer. Tara got lost in the softness, a softness that had been missing for a long time. She felt the tip of a tongue graze her bottom lip and she accepted it with enthusiasm. Their mouths were dancing now. Breathing life into one another. But the dance had to come to an end. They both knew it and so they delicately separated their lips. But they rested their foreheads against one another. They still needed close contact after such an explosive experience. Tara spoke first.
"Let's finish this Willow. We have a life to get back to. We've waited long enough." Willow was near tears from the kiss.
"So long, Tara... it's been so long." Tara smiled. She was thinking the same thing. She comforted the shivering red head.
"I know baby, I know." As Tara said this she moved her hands up and down Willow's back in a soothing action. Willow felt her courage swell inside her. This was it. She had a life full of friends, and love. She wasn't about to give that up to some pathetic warlock. She straightened her back and took Tara's hands in her own.
"I'm ready."
"I know." They walked out the door ready to face whatever came their way.
They were in the central square of the campus. Tara and Anya had formed a pentagram. They were speaking in Latin. The spell was more of a homing beacon. Energy would form around them and any mystic or Wiccan in a ten mile radius would feel it. But only someone like Rack would be able to feel the intensity of it. He would recognize it and come running. Buffy, Spike, and Xander were close, but out of sight. Anya was starting to get anxious.
"Maybe it didn't work. I haven't done this in a while." Tara sensed something. The ex-demon's babbling was breaking her concentration.
"Shush... I feel something."
"Good something or bad something?" Then Tara felt it. She was certain.
"He's here."
-=-=-=-=-=-
Willow was in the computer lab with Dawn. The room had stadium seating with desktops along the seats. On the ground floor was an open space. Against the wall was a screen and on the ceiling were projectors pointing toward the ground. She was in the control room at the top of seating. It was closed off from the rest of the room by Plexiglas. She was getting her gear together. Dawn was pacing the floor. She had to say something.
"Do you think they're okay?" Willow could hear the nervousness in Dawn's voice.
"It's gonna be okay, Dawnie. You have to stay up here when the fighting comes around, okay."
"Yes, the little girl knows to stay out of danger."
"No Dawn. I need you up here. When the battle gets in this room, I'm gonna need you to hit the enter button on my laptop. When I give you the signal, you have to do that. It won't work if you don't do that. Can you do that for me?" Willow knew what it was like to have to stay on the sidelines while you're friends risked their lives for you. It was a horrible feeling. At least if she gave Dawn this job she would be away from the fight, but still helping the gang. Dawn's eye's widened at this suggestion.
"Really, you need me? I can do it Willow."
"I know you can Dawnie. I have to go down there. You wait up here for my signal." Dawn nodded then scrunched her head in confusion.
"Uh, Willow?" The redhead turned around to face the teenager.
"Yeah, Dawnie."
"What's the signal?"
"Oh! Right."
-=-=-=-=-=-
Back at the central square the Scoobies felt the night suddenly get cold. Tara stood up from her place on the grass. She turned toward the bushes. She felt him before she saw him.
"Rack." Out from the shadows came the dark warlock.
"Well, well. It's Goldie Locks. Where are the three bears? Is this a new friend... what's the matter... did Strawberry lose your interest?" Tara walked up to him.
"I won't waste my time explaining things that you could never understand. You can't win here Rack." Rack stepped up.
"Is that right, Goldie? I think you're a bit out of your element."
"That's where you'd be wrong." With that Tara raised her hand swiftly with her fingers fanned out. "Incindie!" Flames burst out from Tara's hands. They covered Rack until he waved a hand over himself and they disappeared. At this the rest of the gang thought it a good time to come out of the shadows. Buffy spoke to the stunned Warlock.
"Look who's a little hot under the collar. You okay Rack? You look a little flushed." He was angry now. These little children were beneath him and he didn't have time to play.
"You again, slayer. Good thing I brought some friends too, this time. Why don't you play with them." Out of the shadows came three demons and a vampire. Buffy assessed the situation and then called to Tara.
"Tara, get back!" Tara stepped back from the new aggressors, but her eyes remained focused on Rack. Spike and Xander jumped into the fray. Spike took on the big green horned demon, while Xander went toe to toe with the vampire. Anya stayed close to Xander. Buffy was taking on what was left of the demon pack. The two she was facing were big. Really big. There was kind of a strong resemblance to the deformed guy in the movie 'Goonies'. Actually it looked like they could be related. They were at least seven feet tall, and when compared to Buffy's small stature they looked even bigger. Buffy really wanted to avoid too many direct hits from these guys. Despite slayer strength, a broken rib from one of these guys could be a real pain in the ass. She started to almost dance around them. They were slow and her speed would be an advantage. She gave a full frontal kick to one of the guys stomach areas, but forgot to look out for the second one and felt her body collapse as a fist was rammed into her back. She fell to the ground face first, but quickly turned her body over. The demon was now looking over her and was lifting his huge leg so as to drop it on her body. But Buffy saw it coming and shifted to the side. Then she raised her own leg to give a direct hit to what she assumed was the groin area. The demon yelped from pain and tumbled to the ground.
"There goes his chance for procreation." She got up and wrapped her hands around the neck of the demon. He struggled once he realized the intent of his attacker, but it was too late. With a swift movement the slayer snapped his neck.
Spike was busy with his demon, but his opponent was weakening from the prolonged struggle. The demon made a final charge for the blonde vampire. Spike lifted his axe in the air and as the demon charged at him he twirled like a matador in a bull fight and brought the axe down on the back of the demon as he passed by. Once satisfied with his kill he looked over to where Buffy was and saw her in the midst of killing one of the big suckers. Then he saw the other demon come up behind her.
"Buffy! Behind you!" She turned her head and as she did he threw his axe in the air to the slayer. She caught it in mid-air. As the axe settled in her hands she jumped back from her attacker, and then brought the axe up and over her head in a sweeping action finally coming to rest on the demons skull. In the same moment Xander was able to finally put a stake into the vampire he was facing. The gang looked around feeling a sense of accomplishment that was immediately followed by terror. Buffy looked around her and then asked sternly,
"Where's Tara?!"
-=-=-=-=-=-
Tara was in a stand off with Rack. When the demon pack had come out she saw it as an opportunity to lure Rack to their final destination. Rack was quite the opponent. His power was incredible. All he had to do was lift his hand and lightening streams of energy would come out. That was a sign of true dark power. It meant that you were able to command the energy surrounding you to do your bidding. Tara wasn't trying to weaken him. She needed to force him to keep using his strongest power, so that by the time she led him to the lab he would be most vulnerable. Rack was getting frustrated with this game. This girl wouldn't take the offensive with him. She was able to deflect everything he threw at her. He had never seen such pure power before. Every time he threw his bolts at her a white light would encapsulate her. He needed to break her focus.
"Very impressive, Goldie. Not even your mother could put up a fight like this." Tara heard this and her body stilled. She knew that Rack was trying to bait her. She couldn't fall for it, she had to stay strong.
"She was a screamer though. I heard her body wail as I sucked the life out of her. Do you remember that, Goldie? The pain your mother went through for you." Tara felt her heart start to race and sweat form on her brow. Anger was brewing inside her and with every word Rack uttered, and it was getting harder to keep the feeling from exploding.
"It was pathetic, really. The way she just sacrificed herself to me. Didn't even put up a fight. Maybe she wanted to die, maybe she just wanted to get away from you." And with those last words Tara lost all control. The white light around her disappeared. She raised her hands feeling the anger run through her.
"NOOOOOOOO!" And with that exclamation white bolts of lightening energy came out in steady streams from Tara's hand and were aimed at Rack. Rack was caught off guard. He wasn't expecting the girl to be able to harness such power. By the time these thoughts registered in his brain it was too late. The energy struck him hard and he fell back from the impact. Tara shook her head to try and come back to her senses. She couldn't believe what she just did. She had never felt anything like it before. The surge of energy that ran through her was like fire in her veins. Tara didn't like it. It felt wrong. She couldn't do it again. Rack was regaining her composure and started to stand up. He looked Tara directly in the eyes.
"So I guess someone isn't all peaches-n-cream." Tara felt stunned. She knew she should run but she couldn't. Rack raised his hand to give the dazed girl a taste of his power while she seemed to be stunned. As the energy started to gather in sparks around his hand he felt himself being tackled from behind. This sudden movement brought Tara out of her daze. Spike had taken Rack down before he could cast. Buffy, Anya, and Xander were all behind him. Buffy called to Tara.
"Tara! Get to Willow fast!" Tara nodded. Now she would lead Rack to Willow where her love would take her own stand. Spike tried to punch the warlock, but he was thrown off by some force. Rack stood up and turned around to see his attackers. He laughed.
"Fools." Then he waved a hand up and over them and they were all thrown back against the wall of the nearest building.
"I don't have time for you. It's time for me to collect a debt from an old friend Strawberry."
-=-=-=-=-=-
Tara ran through the halls of Fulton. She came around the corner and came upon the doorway to the computer lab. She walked through and came face to face with Willow.
"Tara, you okay?" She grabbed the girl by the shoulders. She felt something in her skin. Something was flowing through her. Something different.
"He's coming." She looked her in the eyes and fell into her embrace. She was shaking and Willow tried to calm her with soothing strokes.
"What happened, baby?" Tara looked at Willow
"I don't know, I-I, it was intense." Willow wiped the tears that were rolling down the cheeks of the blonde. She always knew that if Tara came against Rack it would be one hell of a showdown. Two opposing powers, one of the light, and one of the dark. It must have been quite a sight. Willow tried to calm her with words,
"I know, I know Tara." Tara started to regain her composure knowing that the battle wasn't over yet.
"He should be ready for you. I kept him on the ropes for a while. Are you ready?"
"As ready as I can be... he's here." Tara felt it too. He was close. Willow was nervous. She wondered if Tara would still be able to do her last bit.
"Are you okay, I mean, will you still be able to do it?" Tara nodded.
"I still got a little in me. It'll be enough" As the words left Tara's mouth Willow looked over the blonde's shoulder and saw Rack step in.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that, Goldie." Rack moved into the room and Willow stood closer to him, shielding Tara with her body. Willow felt her blood course through her veins. She closed her eyes for a second, and willed her body to calm itself. She opened her eyes and closed them in on Rack.
"It's the end of the line for you."
"Is that so, Strawberry?" At that moment the rest of the gang rushed around the corner making their way to the lab. Buffy screamed before she got to the room.
"Willow! He's coming!" As they made their way to the doorway of the room Rack turned around and put his arm out towards to the entrance. Suddenly a shimmering barrier covered the doorway. As Buffy and the gang got to the door they found themselves blocked from entering. Buffy pulled back her fist to break whatever was in her way but her strength wasn't enough.
"Dammit!" Spike touched the barrier and stopped Buffy before she had another go at it.
"Forget it slayer. They're on their own." Buffy looked at the two witches on the other side of the barrier. She couldn't help them.
-=-=-=-=-=-
Rack laughed at the persistence of the slayer.
"This time, no interruptions Strawberry. Make this easy on yourself. Just give me what I want." Willow stood her ground and defied the warlock.
"No."
"Then I'll just have to take it. " He raised his hand and a cloud of red energy started to form around his palm. Willow became mesmerized for a second, then she looked back at Tara.
"Now Tara." Tara raised her hand and spoke the word
"OBSCURO!" A white cloud formed above her hand. She grabbed it and looked into Racks eyes. Then she heaved the thick mass at the warlock. It hit him directly, covering his whole face, and blinded him. Rack tried to shake it off. He was angry now. He didn't have time for these party tricks. He couldn't see what was going on around him. He heard some bodies shuffling and then the voice of the redhead.
"Dawn! DO IT!" Rack had no idea what going on. He put the palms over his face and spoke.
"Dissipate!" The thick mass covering his face fell to the ground. He looked in front of him and the redhead was standing motionless in front of him.
"If you had joined me, we could have shared the power. But now, I think I'll just take it for myself. " Suddenly Rack was glowing. Red bolts of light and energy came off him in sparks. He raised his hands and aimed them at the girl standing in the center of the room.
"Sweet dreams Strawberry." And all the energy that surrounded him went in a stream towards Willow. The energy would suck all the power from her source and send it back to Rack. Then the unimaginable happened for Rack. When the stream reached Willow something happened. Suddenly the image of the redhead fizzled like a TV screen losing it's antenna feed. By the time he realized what was going on it was too late. The energy reflected off the image of the girl and came back directly at him. It was too fast for him to move and suddenly he was hit with all the power he sent out. His body started to convulse and he could feel his source weakening. The spell had been turned on him and was now draining him of all that he was. He felt his power seep out through the pores of his skin until it was finally gone. When this happened the barrier on the doorway broke down and the gang rushed in.
"Willow! Tara!" Xander called to the girls. The girls peeked their heads out from behind the desks. They looked to the floor and saw Rack lying there motionless. They got up and walked over to him. He was still conscious. Willow looked over him and stared into his eyes.
"I told you. It's the end of the road for you, Rack." He looked up at her.
"What did you do?" Willow smiled.
"Oh that. That's what us computer geeks call a digital projection of the physical form." He looked at her not understanding what she was saying. Willow had used a computer program that she had created for the Buffybot. She created a virtual three dimensional image of herself on the screen. By connecting her laptop to the computer lab's top of the line digital equipment she was able to create a life like image of herself that was sent out from the projectors on the ceiling.
"Basically you cast that spell at a mirror image of me, not the real me. It reflected off of it like a mirror since all those little pixel images act like little mirrors." Rack couldn't believe what he was hearing. He was one source away from becoming an immortal and he was beaten by the old smoke and mirrors routine. He lost all his power due to a technologically advanced parlor trick. He looked past the eyes of the red haired girl and saw Goldie staring at him with fire in her eyes. She spoke with a deep voice.
"Buffy, get him up. I want him standing for what I have to say." Buffy got a little nervous. She never heard Tara sound like or look like she did right then. At that moment she was very happy that Tara was on her side. She leaned over the ex-warlock and lifted him by the front of his shirt. Tara stepped up to him. She pulled her hand back with an open palm and Rack feared whatever magic would come from that hand. Tara brought her hand forward with great force and slapped Rack so hard that his head snapped back. Blood trickled from his split lip and his eyes were swimming in fear as he returned her gaze.
"If you ever come near the ones I love again-" She leaned in closer before she continued. "If you ever come near her again I'll show you everything I am capable of. Trust me, it's unlike anything you could ever imagine." She looked over at Buffy.
"Leave him. He can't hurt anyone now but himself." Buffy nodded and let go of her grip. Rack fell to the ground like a bag of bones. She looked at him and smirked
"Personally, I think she let you off easy." And with that she walked away to meet Dawn as she came down the steps from the control room. Anya nodded her head in agreement and added her two cents.
"Now that is putting it mildly."
Willow looked down at the body of her enemy. It was over. She did it. No magic, just Willow. She could feel tears start to form in her eyes. Then she felt Tara's palm cup her cheek.
"He can't hurt you Willow. We did it." She looked into Tara eyes and felt the tears spill over.
"It's over. It's really over," Willow exclaimed. Tara smiled and looked deep into Willow eyes. She knew what this meant for her love, she knew what it signified. Willow faced her deepest fear, and she did it without turning to magic to make it easy. She faced her fear as herself, and she won. Tara didn't think it was possible to love Willow any more than she already did, but at this moment her heart was proving her wrong. She leaned in slowly, needing contact. She pressed her lips to Willows and tasted that sweetness for the second time. It only got better. Willow held on tight, and resisted when she felt that beautiful warmth pull back from her lips.
"It's not over, Willow. It's only the beginning. Our beginning. Let's go home." Willow buried her head in Tara's neck. It was almost surreal. She was back in Tara's arms, her world was back.
They walked through the doorway hand in hand, knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead didn't matter. They had come full circle and were going to set out on the path once again. But this time nothing would separate them, nothing could divide them. They had faced their demons, and they had won. This time around they would walk the path together, side by side forever.
Down the hall you could hear the girls gloating in their victory.
"So, was I strong like an Amazon?" Willow questioned her lover. Tara smiled and looked at Willow.
"Yup, strong like an Amazon. My little Amazon warrior." Willow giggled.
"Willow Rosenberg: Amazon Warrior. Kinda has a cool ring to it..."
Tara smiled, feeling the most wonderful feeling of warmth fill her heart.
They were home.
