The Treatment of W/T and Tara in S7

Postby AmbersSecretAdmirer » Mon May 19, 2003 6:01 am

This is a thread to discuss the treatment of WT this season by ME. This is not for general Angel or Buffy discussion.

the above was added by the mods.

I watched this episode last week and was struck by a strange thought. For those who haven't seen it Conner is being asked by Cordy to kill an innocent girl so that they can use her blood to bring Cordy to term and give birth to her baby.

The Powers, hoping to prevent Conner from committing such an evil act that will in it's consequence bring about armageddon, send Darla (his mother) to plead with him to stop by appealing to his good nature and telling him that she loved him and wants the best for him. It is a good scene and thumbs up to Julie Benz for her performance.

My thought as I watched it though was this: If Darla can give advice to Conner to prevent him from destroying the world, why couldn't Tara do it for Willow last season? Surely theirs' is an even stronger case for such an intervention?

What do you all think?

Darla was a murderer and a sadist. Therefor she is completly open to redemption. Tara was a lesbian, so she wasnt.

I honestly beleave its that simple. I'm sorry, I do.

This is like when Cordy became a god after enduring a few headaches, the same night Willow tried to destory the world because she lost everything.

Goddamn, there is a big ass rant growing in me.

Angel is off topic here so I'm closing this thread.

Edited to Add:

On second thought we are going to leave this thread open and use it as a thread to list and discuss the many various ways W/T were mistreated on this horrendous show.

This is not a thread for general Buffy or Angel discussion.

Brad, I don't quite agree with what you say there. Tara did not need any kind of redemption. (Neither did Willow, regardless of what happened at the end of season shit.) The thing that has been made perfectly clear by ME is that every fucking murderer, slayer, their mother, straight lovers and whoever else I am forgetting can be brought back, but not Tara. Not Willow and Tara. ME has a pretty fucked up idea of what forever or love means.

What treatment?

Once ME couldn't use Tara to hurt us anymore (thanks to wonderful Ms Benson) they forgot she ever exsisted.

Did someone call her father? Who paid for her arrangements?

What about the ongoing police inquest?

Let's see a murder and an attempted murder happened in Buffy's home and Dawn wasn't hauled off to foster care?

yeah, whatever.

The only part of the police was to serve as a means to sanctimoniously condemn Willow for taking revenge on that evil little shit. The police would take care of a human murderer and rapist, ah huh, sure they would. Anyone else can get away with murder on that show and no one bats an eye, but Willow must be tortured and lectured from here till kingdom come.

The treatment of Willow, or rather notWillow is disgusting, the treatment of Tara no less so, and I consider her being ignored a form of treatment. It is an insult, an insult to Tara, an insult to Willow and an insult to us. Just about the worst they could have done without the image of Amber at their disposal for further infliction of pain. Tara is Willow's forever, and what does she do, she moves on to the first lesbian that tosses herself at her. How long did that take? The only reason we had to wait for that glorious display of ME's gay friendliness was that they were too busy tormenting Willow in the first half of the season.

To top it off they have included a throw away joke by the one person who was closest to Tara after Willow, about killing MKF. A final kick in the face. So funny too. I am sure if we had been treated to a season 8 we would be hearing Willow joke about not letting guns lie around after that unfortunate Tara incident that ruined her best shirt.

All in all ME succeeded in doing what has been predicted here before the season even started. They would continue to insult and hurt WT by ignoring Tara and having Willow hook up with some other woman. Who cares about mourning, who cares about restoring WT when everyone else gets to be brought alive whenever the mood strikes them. Aren't we lucky that Tara is the only death they did not want to cheapen. Instead they opted to cheapen Willow and Tara's relationship.

Willow is held constantly to account for her actions in a manner which would suggest her murder of Warren was motiveless act of cruelty rather than the response of someone driven insane by pain and loss.

This was reinforced by the efforts gone to not to discuss Tara or the impact of that loss on Willow.

What was worse was the way the same people who seemed so lukewarm about Willow and Tara are utterly enthusiastic about Willow and JFK. This was just plain insulting; as if the scoobies never thought Tara was good enough for Willow.

The ultimate intended insult would have been CWDP, to try and use the memory of Tara against Willow showed how little ME cared about the characters or the fans.

Willow: ...I have to tell you....

Tara: No, I understand you have to be with the person you l-love

Willow: I am

Sheridan: Agreed. Joss can talk all he wants about how he gets why people were upset but he was quite ready to stick the knife into them again in CWDP. I really don't see why they couldn't have given Tara at least the same tribute that they gave one shot character Cassie. Neither Joyce nor Jenny were forgotten by the rest of the scoobies the way that Tara was. I also don't really see what's so original about having Tara be the first like Jenny was. They already did the the dead lover as first evil thing.

The treatment of NotWillow and her grief for Tara in this season has been criminal. I can't believe the gay press has been duped so badly by Josswad. Nothing he has done this season has made up for Tara's death. Nothing has been done to show the deep connection W/T had. One little throwaway scene at a headstone and that's it. You would think that Willow had never really introduced Tara to the group and that she really did just keep Tara to herself after the initial bedroom scene in Who Are You. And the MKF bit is pathetic. I am just glad that the ratings have nose dived so badly this year. Cold comfort but better than none.

Buffy is not the show it once was.

Postby dekalog » Mon May 19, 2003 6:31 pm

Plain and simple:

What little discussion of W/T there was this season was hurtful, spiteful, and spoke volumes about the real problems of Buffy as a show as it stands now.

Willow as a character was assassinated last season with the whole junkie shite, and as this season comes to an end her character has become unrecognizable - where once stood a brave, intelligent, and beautiful soul, now stands a fearful, stupid, inane, numbed piece of cardboard.

Buffy's character likewise has been trashed into a fawning over evil couldn't save the world had to get Spike to do it, bitchy piece of not witty anymore cranky mopehead.

The gratuitous kill ratio of women has soared, and the leftover meat puppets have become so soulless that they mourn the mall, and not those they loved.

The characters, storylines, fun, and humour of the show were replaced with hollow acting, action that was even more ridiculous than previous seasons, and just plain bad writing.

Writers and producers from ME have continued their abuse and malignment of fans, and sycophant critics continue to ignore the reality of what Buffy as a show now is.

In light of all this some still suggest that Buffy is a feminist show - I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

edited to add: Sorry this post went everywhere and got terribly off topic - I had a point really I did, but as I sat here trying to write, I fumed and what with my head all full of steam I was unable to think clearly - hence this post.
